Corrypt

JohnB Mushrooms. It's all about mushrooms. And keys and crates and stuff, too, but really, mushrooms. In Corrypt, a puzzle game by Zaga-33 creator Michael Brough, your job is to work your way through maze-like screens as you hunt for the items you need to appease unsettled citizens. Using a slightly tweaked sokoban-style setup, be ready to sit and scratch your head as you wonder at the logic of carving a path through groups of wooden crates.

corrypt.gifCorrypt gives you one simple ability: pushing and pulling boxes. Unlike vanilla sokoban, your hands are a bit sticky and will tug on boxes directly adjacent to you if you move towards or away from them. This is useful in many situations, but it's also a nuisance when all you want to do is walk away from the crates. Solution? Step sideways! Now you get to figure out how to place crates to open passage ways or hold down buttons, all while dealing with some environmental obstacles that make things even more difficult.

Corrypt's puzzles are the kind that delight you in their intricacies. You can usually tell what needs to be done, like sliding a single box into a specific slot, but actually doing that will take some thought. And many failed attempts. And maybe some scratch paper. Don't worry, though, it's never frustrating or overly complex. Just challenging, precisely the way we like it!

Wow! Great, weird, amazingly different game. You have to play at least until you

meet the wizard

which totally changes the game play mechanics in a unique way. I've never experienced a game quite like this before.

I love this game! I'm playing on an iPad mini and the controls work excellent on the touch screen. Just swipe anywhere on the screen, which is so much better than having to touch in designated areas like invisible buttons.

I'm a bit frustrated, though, because it seems I've managed to get one puzzle into an unsolvable state, and undo wont work for me because I left the area and it saved it that way. I haven't reached the point where Nick says the gameplay changes, though, so I'm hoping I'll be able to eventually go back and solve that one.

Really brilliant puzzles in this one, highly recommended.

I am obsessed with this game @_@.
Nick, you're so so right. Mind. Blown.
I actually squealed a little bit when I first realised what was happening.

I've got 2 magic now, haven't used one (aside from to test what it was, and then immediately undoing), and I'm wracking my brain as to where and when to best use them!

I absolutely love it when games add in one small thing which completely changes the mechanic, well into the game. SO CLEVER.

Jay: for me, at least, I can undo back as far as I like by successively undoing. Each 'undo' point is when I entered a room. Try spamming the undo button a bit?

Also, I might contest JohnB's comment that puzzles are never frustrating or overly complex. When you reach

the wizard

everything becomes EXTREMELY complex, and there certainly some very frustrating puzzles.
This is not a criticism, though - it's a fun kind of frustration, and an awesome kind of complex :D.
I found the learning curve to be greatly balanced, though. Not too slow, not too fast. No instructions, but it gradually introduces levels of complexity to puzzles, so no instructions are needed.

WOW. Absofreakinamazing. The further I get the more wonderous it becomes. And already I'm looking forward to playing it again.

Damn, I hit restart instead of resume and now have to redo everything over again... :(
I have no idea how magic works. I "glitched" two tiles by moving into certain rooms, but I read here and there that you can select the tiles you destroy... Is that why I can't get to the second ladder?

Hey all, we'd love to hear any tips you may have for playing Corrypt, whether it's hints for the more difficult levels, or advice on using some of the advanced gameplay features. Thanks!

Hm, I'm stuck at 'Forest path' (and cannot find any other ways to go, no powerups yet, if there are any). Other than that, nice little game, although a bit frustration sometimes to find solutions to the puzzles. But that's probably my lack of intelligence and perseverence ;-)

Ah, yes, and 'Spore Shaft' gives me headaches too, I'm just not born for this kind of games I guess (-:

@swoopie

I am, not sure for Spore shaft to be honest not sure if I am past that or not .. but for forest path I locked it and restarted, but the break through for me was

the arrows pull as well as push

Then with the whole game becomes something else !

@yaddab
Thanks I just figured that out myself and was about to update here. Solved that one. Spore Shaft is still a mystery to me though. But, now I am at the point to

have met the magician and figured out what magic does

and I'm starting to feel this may get too complicated for me. It's a very cool concept though!

I think I've gone as far as I can with the choices I've made, and I currently have 4 mushrooms, 2 score gems and a red key left.

I've scoured the entire map and there doesn't appear to be any item I don't already have, and the only place I can't get past is the

red block Gateway in the upper left corner of the map.

I guess it's time to reload with that in mind and make different magic choices?

I'm feeling kinda dense, but how do you choose what you make disappear? Is it a matter of picking the right mushroom?

Nevermind, I hadn't managed to speak to the wizard until right now :)

facepalm, I finally figured out what the magic is doing

Any block you magic then get copied to all other rooms also -

Any objects that are on magiced blocks when you teleport get copied to the room you teleport to

So am guessing the strat is going to be to somehow either

Clear all the red blocks or

Magic a red trigger and a box into that room to clear it

Reply

Well finally got all 7 Gems, not sure if that was the ending I expected but never mind Perhaps the ending is all about the title after all!

It repeats a bit of what I already posted but

Magic

Copies whatever block is magicked through to every room

Magicked blocks

Will repeat what ever is in them, when you move to another room

Trigger Blocks

will trigger when copied, useful to open the Top Left Room

Arrow Blocks

Will pull as well as push

General strats for me were

To just copy blank blocks to where ever they were need to progress when I got stuck

You have to copy one of the ladder blocks the one by the miner worked for me

Keep an eye that you don't lock yourself out of anywhere, but undo will undo right back to the beginning

I can't find the 7th gem. Can you get one from the person who say "stay away from me, I won't tell you where the gem is"?

If not, then I must have deleted it accidentally with magic.

If you are just starting, I recommend drawing a 9x9 grid and 5x5 map. Mark down all the important items (gems, required red and blue buttons, etc.) so you down accidentally delete them.
Then mark tiles that will give you access to mushrooms or blocked exits, so you can consider your options before you start using magic.

Also note that a few tiles will be magically copied automatically when you enter a room for the first time. So don't enter them until you are ready.
These are:

- 2E (5across/2 down) - with magic tile 7D (4across/ 7down)
*This will make a permanently blocked tile.
- 3E (5across/3down) - with magic tile 7G (7across/ 7down)
- 5E (5A/5D) - will magic tile 4G (7A/4D)
- lower floor 1E (5A/1D) - will magic tile 3C (3A/3D)
*This will copy a blue square.
- lower floor 2E (5A/ 2D) will magic tile 8E (5A/8D)

Don't forget

you can use magic to copy red/blue buttons and stairs too.
