Westward III: Gold Rush

JohnBCasual sim/strategy fans (and anyone who enjoyed Virtual Villagers or My Tribe) take note: Westward III: Gold Rush has arrived! Following last spring's release of Westward II: Heroes of the Frontier, the third installment in the series continues the new 3D visual style and basic premise introduced in the second game. Take control of three new heroes as you collect resources, construct farms, saloons, granaries and more to keep your settlers happy and healthy.

westward3.jpgEach new game begins with choosing a hero. Heroes bring unique backstories and bonus abilities such as unlocking the ranch or allowing you to build tanneries right away. After selecting a character you'll go through a tutorial that teaches you the basics of gameplay one step at a time. It's a little slow, but newcomers to the genre/series will greatly appreciate the assistance.

Controls are mainly mouse-driven, though there are several keyboard shortcuts that make things easier. Assigning tasks, moving villagers, building structures, etc. is a point-and-click affair, and moving through menu screens is simple and straightforward. Just about every bit of info you need to know is one click away, and once you get familiar with the icons you won't have any trouble with the interface.

The meat of the game takes place across a number of scenarios, each divided into a series of connected quests. These challenges gradually build your skills and your town as you go, introducing tons of fun tasks like battling bandits or blowing up mountain passes with dynamite, and simple necessities such as constructing wells, farms and other buildings. These quests are usually steps that lead to a larger goal, offering an excellent sense of progression and accomplishment. Everything is rather streamlined but with just enough wiggle room to give you a sense of freedom.

In addition to completing quests, you also have to consider the well-being of villagers in your settlement. Everyone needs food, water, and a job.

westward32.jpgAnalysis: The Westward series had a humble beginning back in late 2006 when it rode in just as the Virtual Villagers craze was beginning to subside. Sandlot Games took a chance with a wild west-themed village sim that sent players on journeys straight out of a classic western. The gamble paid off, and Westward has exploded as one of the most recognized casual realtime sim games around. With its excellent production values and smooth blend of missions and town simulation gaming, just about anyone who picked up the game was quickly hooked by its simple charms.

Westward III sticks to its guns and closely resembles Westward II in every way, from visual style to using the hero set-up to push the story along. Unfortunately you'll find few differences beyond that, though the quests and scenarios are unique and challenging even if you're a long-time Westward fan. There are also a few minor difficulty issues where it seems to spike at certain points in a scenario, leaving you lost and clueless as to what to do next. And would it break the gameplay too much to be able to speed up time while waiting for resources?

Westward III does what its predecessors have done quite well - deliver an evenly-paced wild west adventure in the form of a casual simulation. It's got a great sense of humor evident at every turn, and the gameplay itself is about as captivating as it comes. It doesn't innovate far beyond its predecessors, but who says every game has to be a pioneer? Enjoyable, challenging and fun down to the last nugget.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

Here is a list of Hints and Tips for Westward 3.

We compiled all of the best information from the comments posted by the awesome JIG community. Thanks to everyone for helping out and thanks to Kayleigh for putting it all together!

How to get the dynamite license

You have to go north to continue looking for Redd (click on the exclamation point over your hero's head). You will do a couple of quests and then it takes you back to this settlement and you will be able to get the license for the dynamite.

Who is stealing the money and how to get rid of the thief

The thief is the mayor of the town.
There are different ways to get rid of him:
You can fire him twice
or
Demolish the town hall and battle a few bad guys
or
Move him over to the gold pile near the north end and make him dig that patch until bandits showed up. After you defeat 2 sets of bandits, the thief will be banished from town by your hero. You have to continually drag him over there though as he wants to run back to the bank all the time to steal money

How to get the silver ring

You need to mine some silver and have a blacksmith. The rest does itself. It will tell you when you have mined enough silver for the ring.

How to get the ostriches

You need to collect all the Easter Eggs.

How to get the Easter Eggs Hunt

You need 2 chicken farms to get this quest.

How to get the black horse

You have to build stables. It seems to be random how many you have to build. Some people need 4 or 5, others need 10 or more before the black horse shows up.

How to get a red flower

You have to build flower boxes and water the flowers. After the first watering, they turn red.

How to get into the haunted town

To get into the haunted town, you build a lamp post by the cave located in the upper right. This will send you into the haunted town.

How to get more than 15 people into the town

To get more than 15/20 people, you will have to hire a sheriff.
To get more than 20 people, you will have to increase the happiness, by building luxury stuff.

How to get a prospector bonus for your mines in the first town

You will find a gold nugget near the guy that is standing in the water. You CAN take it - when you build the saloon, the guy in the water will say something about stealing and leave the town.

But when you do NOT take the nugget, he will stay in town (build a tent for him!) and you will receive a prospector bonus for your mines.

How to get the winery

You will have to complete the smuggler challenge. When he finally gets everything he wants, you will get the winery

How to get the grapes

To get the grapes, water your flower pots. They turn from yellow to red, then red to purple. When they're purple, a woman will come and tell you that is her favorite color and she gives you the grapes.

It's random how many flower pots you have to build. For most people it works out with 5-8, but it can be less or more.

How to keep the wolves and other animals from destroying the wagon camp

  • Keep the fires lit.

  • Let your characters go all around the perimeter of the map collecting piles of wood and gold.

  • Let your hero chop up any logs there are. If you encounter an animal while doing this, you can usually outrun it.

  • After you do this, go up by the wagons (the quest won't actually start until you talk to them).

  • Let one of the citizens build a lumber camp and put them both to work there.

  • Then put your fighters in the middle area between the wagons and keep the fires going

How to find the hidden supplies

You need dynamite. Just put some dynamite in the river near hungry prospector is. There is a bit of fallen rock there. When you blow it up, it shows a ramp and then you can get to the area where the hidden supplies are, in the bottom right hand corner of the map area past the archway.

First town treasure

Build three farms growing carrots to get a bunny.

Drag the bunny to the entrance of the little tunnel. The bunny will get the treasure chest from the little tunnel.

  1. Dynamite the rocks to get them to fall on the switch in the enclosure behind the bandits. The switch will open the gate. Walk into the gate and walk up to the scarecrow. Get key #1.

  2. Blow up rocks in the river in front of pool with fish swimming around the crate. Then build a bridge to the pool. Catch all of the fish swimming around the crate. When they are all caught, open crate for key #2.

  3. Go back to the area on the left side of the river. Go to a white tree on a hill toward the bottom and near the far left side of this area. Blow up tree and a crate falls to ground. Open crate and get key #3.

  4. When you have all keys go to the chest and open it.

Second town treasure

You have to do these in order or nothing will work:

  1. Blow up the tree to hit the switch.

  2. Go to the chest.

  3. Go to the river tunnel and a box will appear.

  4. THEN build the well in the blue circle of stones.

  5. It will say something, then click on the well again with your hero.

Cave maze (pelts for dynamite) with screenshots

  • Go to the tunnel in the back of the main area that leads to the two tunnels on the left.

  • Come out one, go in the other, and it leaves you just on the other side, behind the main area.

  • Go back in the tunnel you just came out of, and it will put you facing the front of the scene in a very small area near the burned out bridge.

  • There is a hidden cave there on the character's left (your right). Blow that up, and you'll have the entrance opened on the extreme left. Get both characters through and you're done.

Cave 1
Cave 2
Cave 3
Cave 4

Rescue the 5 lumberjacks

  • First build a bridge to reach the island with two dynamite sticks.

  • Then build a bridge to the north and save the first lumberjack.

  • Head to west. Blow up the boulder and save the second lumberjack.

  • From there, build a bridge to the island with one dynamite stick, you have now two sticks left.

  • Go back to south. Build a bridge to save the female lumberjack.

  • Go in the river and blow up the boulder next to the goldmine and you can save the fourth lumberjack in the south.

  • Continue in the river. Another boulder, use your last stick and blow it up. You can now reach the fifth lumberjack.

Wanted Poster side quest

  • Build two, better three Sheriff offices to get 3 (6) more deputies.

  • Build at least 7 stables and put Sheriff and at least 6 deputies on horses.

  • Also always keep one deputy behind, out of harm's way, so the game doesn't end if you are close to beating them.

Earthquake Quest

  • Save very often, especially as soon as you build something. After an earthquake, you can restart at this point. Some people saved every minute. It will take a long time like this, but it's a safe way.

  • Make sure that you have plenty of wells so that you can put the fires out fast. That is very important.

  • Start with the basics: farm, lumber and gold. Work your way up to having 2 farms, 2 wood, and 2 gold. When you have enough, build your lumber mill and do the fortification. This will help a lot.

  • Slowly build up and fix everything as soon as you can. Then when you have your 20 people and a good supply of wood and gold, build as many luxury items as you can to make the happiness. Do the luxury items last since they get destroyed really easily.

Having trouble with groups of bandits (and not enough money to hire gunslingers?)

When you go up to a group slowly, you can get one bandit to follow you a little way from the rest. Shoot this guy and then go get another and do the same. It saves money on gunslingers and really helps in the Wanted Poster missions.

Tips for the haunted town

  • The one tip on the haunted town that seems to help the most people through is the realization that you don't have to feed the people.

  • Build tents to get a nice stock of civilians up, but don't worry about feeding them, or even employing them beyond what you need to keep your wood and gold coming in.

  • You may worry about people getting mad and leaving, but if they do, they should be replaced with another citizen, so you should be in the clear.

  • Still, keep an eye on your population, and if you get down to two or three uninfected, build a few more tents to bring it back up.

Drill recovering quest

  • First door - 1 on 1 switch other guy on the other. This will open the door on the left.

  • Take one of your people and go stand on the switch in that room. That will open the door forward.

  • Bring both people through the door, up the hill and down to the right. Have one of them stand on the switch in front of you.

  • When the door opens, leave the person on the switch and walk the other through.

  • Now move the person off the switch and back onto it again. The door that was just walked through will close and the one next to it will open.

  • Have the first person walk through this door and step on that switch. This will open the 3rd door in the previous area. Have them walk back into the area with three doors.

  • Now have the other person step off the switch they are on and back on it again to reopen the door for them to walk through. Take both people through the third door.

  • Now if you want, you can fish in the pond to get the key to open the door in the top right. This will get you the dynamite and you can go back to blast through the rocks and get all the stuff back a couple of areas.

  • Here is the part that most people seem to be having trouble with. Put each person on one switch, this will open the door in front of you.

  • Now move the person on the right through the door. When they move off of the switch, the door to THEIR right is opened. Go through that door.

  • Take the person still outside the first door and move them to the switch on the right. This will open the door in front of the person inside.

  • Take them through that door and step on the switch. Leave this person standing on the switch and take the one outside in through the door and to THEIR left. When they step on that switch, the main doors will open.

  • Now you have to take this person back out the first doors to stand on the switch on the right again so your other person can get out.
Move them both into the final big area.

  • They should now each step on a switch to the right, this will open the door to where the drill bit is.

  • Bring one of your people in to get the drill bit and the final door will open to get you back to the beginning.

Tips for the 3 cemeteries

  • You need to build a church first.

  • Take the three people you have, employ one to the lumber camp, one to the farm, and bounce the other between the saloon and general store.

  • Take out the bandits as quickly in the game as you can. The pumpkin head horseman will not come as frequently then.

  • Then build a cabin and a gold mine in the water. Gather the gold to repair the cemetery.

  • As soon as someone is possessed, build a tent so a new person will move in, but DON'T go over 13 people because if you hit 15 you need a sheriff and you do not have time for that.

  • Don't feed anyone. As they get mad and leave, new people will come in but watch carefully. If you get down to 3 people, build a tent or your people might leave before you get a new one in there and that ends the quest.

  • Employ two people panning and two wood cutting. Anyone else still alive send to chop logs and hit the gold deposits.

  • Blow up all the buildings except for houses, the general store, and the tavern. (If you blow up your houses, the zombies just move in when you build tents and you don't get new people).

  • Build the church as soon as you have the resources, don't wait. Have someone other than your hero do all the building. He or she will be busy killing bandits.

  • Make sure you save 100 for dynamite to get to the third graveyard.

  • Rebuild the cemetery as soon as you clear off the bandits. It seemed like that slowed down the pumpkin headed dude.

  • Only buy one gunslinger and bring him in after the bandits have targeted your hero so you don't lose him.

  • Drunk people do not get possessed and when they get too hungry, they pass out and then become employable again.

Tips for the trading post quests

  • Build wells for water requirements.

  • Don't rush to build. Most of the time, collecting the scattered resources is enough

  • Fish/hunt for food, rather than spending resources to build a farm.

  • If you reach a goal sooner than the deadline, save and check what the next mission is. If the next one is gold for example, and say you're collecting wood, allocate everyone to gold in the remaining time.

  • For the latter trading post quests, build a panning mine and a wood cutter as soon as possible.

  • Build a farm only once, I think it was the #8, when it wanted 50 food and I had 10 people.

  • Don't forget to talk to the people again to give them the food in the two trading post quests. Otherwise, you will be told that you failed.

  • You have to do 4 trading post quests in the first town and 4 in the second town.

  • Make sure that you have an employee at the trading post, otherwise the requests will not show up.

  • You have to go back and click the bubble at the trading post to get the next quest.

How to get boots

Get manned tannery and manned blacksmith and 1 cow ranch

How to get cheese

  • Do all the trading post challenges and get the cheese hat and the butter churn.

  • Create 3 cow ranches and build 3 butter churns.

  • Cheese for sale in store.

  • May not need 3 cow ranches, so try 1 then 2 then 3.

How to get wine

  • Complete successfully the smuggling challenge and you will get ability to grow winery.

  • Build several (1-5) flower beds and change them to purple flowers by dragging anyone to it (they will water flowers and change colors).

  • Once you have several purple flower beds, you get ability to buy grape seeds.

  • Build 1-3 (again not sure of number) grape farms and you will be able to build winery.

  • Once winery is manned, wine is for sale in store.

Hardest egg/Ostrich egg

  • 14 of the eggs are brightly colored and fairly easy to find.

  • The hardest one and the one that gives you ostriches is square white egg - I usually find it in the water under rocks or at the entrance (in water) where you got the treasure key.

  • One hard to find egg is found by blowing up tree/rock that is near railroad track/water area - across from the hillside worrier - the messy cabin with man that does nothing ?

Problems with the well

As a lot of people complained about the problem, getting the hero down the well, It has been brought to our attention that there is an issue with the current build of the game, and the developers are working on a fix that is not yet available.

We will announce here when it is.

Instead, as a workaround and in the meantime, you can do this: You can load a previous save to correct the order in which you perform the tasks, so that you do not run into this issue.

  • Amos Cutter unlocks the Gun Shop

  • Shawnee Longfeather unlocks the Tannery.

  • Build two more tents then go check out the campsite.

  • Put your settlers to work building a well, a granary, a lumber camp, a panning operation, and a farm.

  • Put them to work.

  • Sam shows up and challenges you to grow 10 food at the farm.

  • If you need more settlers, build tents or cabins.

  • Click on the store tab to buy the cabin option so you can build cabins.

  • Pick up any wood that is on the ground as you head to the campsite.

  • Click on the box and read the note. It holds a clue for the hidden supplies.

  • Go back into town.

  • The wagon will be broken up.

  • After a few minutes, you will be able to buy dynamite.

  • Purchase the dynamite as soon as you can afford it.

  • Buy the tree upgrade and you will also be able to buy fast growing trees to plant near your lumber camps to keep them in business.

Find Redd's Hidden Supplies

  • Dynamite the boulders near the prospector. They are by the riverbank.

  • Blow up the boulders, walk up the ramp, and go across to the rock arch.

  • Go through the rock arch and up to the top of the hill by the boulders.

  • As you approach, Redd's hidden supplies will appear.

Continue Building Your Town

  • Buy some more dynamite and blow up the rock at the "T" of the river near the gold deposit.

  • Build a second panning operation.

  • Hold off building the panning operation near the protector as long as you can.

  • Once you give him 25 food, build him a tent and he will stay if you haven't taken his gold nugget.

  • Have him build the panning operation and start him working.

At this point, McAllister and Willy show up and try to run you off the land. The sheriff shows up and tells them that you can stay on the land, but they own the river. You are now down to 1 mine if it still has any gold.

Rescue the Lumberjacks

  • James wants to speak to you. He is located down river where the "!" is if you haven't already found him.

  • You get the Rescue the Trapped Lumberjacks quest.

  • Accept the request if you are ready to go.

  • You will first be taken to a bridge tutorial.

  • Bridges are located on the third building tab on the bottom.

  • Talk to the settler and he will ask you to build him a bridge.

  • After the bridge is built, follow him across the river.

  • He will ask you to build him another bridge.

  • You will have to turn this bridge.

  • Click on the bridge and then click on the rotate button located above the build menu.

  • This will rotate the bridge so you can place it.

  • Build the bridge and follow the settler across this bridge.

  • You will next be taken where the lumberjacks are trapped.

  • Walk toward the lumber mill and talk to the woman.

  • Put her to work at the mill.

  • You will meet a male settler.

  • Put him to work at one of the lumber camps.

  • Pick up the wood, supplies, and any loose gold.

  • Build your first bridge to the island to reach the dynamite.

  • Cross the bridge and pick up the dynamite and any other supplies and gold.

  • Go back across the bridge and build another bridge to the same island on the other side of the small hill.

  • Meet the settler and pick up supplies.

  • Send the settler across the bridge and down the river to the ramp by the panning operation and set him to work.

  • Send your hero down the ramp into the river.

  • Blow up the rocks in the river.

  • Walk up the next ramp and meet the next lumberjack.

  • Pick up any supplies.

  • Send the lumberjack to the panning operation. (You need the gold to build the bridges).

  • If the first panning operation is destroyed, walk down river and build another one.

  • Continue past the second gold vein in the river and up the ramp.

  • Walk as far as you can and build another bridge.

  • Cross the bridge and meet the woman.

  • Set her to work at one of the lumber camps.

  • If you still have dynamite, continue walking north to the rocks blocking the path.

  • Blow them up and continue north to meet the next woman.

  • If you don't have dynamite, build a bridge to the island with dynamite.

  • Gather all the supplies on that island, then continue to the rocks in the path.

  • Meanwhile, if you have the supplies, have the worker at the lumber mill build a bridge to save the woman near the lumber mill.

  • Once all have been rescued, head back to town.

Continue Building Your Town

  • When you return to town and have already built a lumber mill, build a bridge so James and his friend can walk to the mainland.

  • You can set them to work to build a cabin and then mine the gold and silver veins on the ground.

  • Once they have mined all the gold and silver on the ground, have them build a big mine south of where you met Willy. (You will have to have a blacksmith first).

  • Head back to town and continue to buy buildings from the store as you have the experience points.

  • Continue to build.

  • Once you have 15 settlers in your town, build a Sheriff's Office and hire a Sheriff.

  • Buy the Sheriff's office from the store tab on the top.

  • Build the Sheriff's office and hire a Sheriff.

  • You can now build more houses for more settlers.

  • You won't be able to attract more settlers until you have a Sheriff.

  • Now that you have a Sheriff's office, you can reform drunks.

  • Drag your Sheriff to the drunk until handcuffs appear.

  • Your drunk will now stagger to the jail to dry out. Once they are sober, they can be employed.

White Bunny

  • Build three farms and have all three grow carrots.

  • A white bunny will appear.

  • Click on the bunny and drag it to its hole on the left side of the screen.

  • The hole is in a hollow near a pile of gold.

  • The bunny will go in the hole and drag out a treasure chest.

  • You will need three keys to open the chest.

  • This is the first treasure hunt.

First Treasure Hunt

  • Cross the bridge you built for James and walk north past the gunslingers to the rocks above the switch.

  • Dynamite the rocks to get them to fall on the switch in the enclosure behind the bandits.

  • The switch will open the gate.

  • Walk into the gate and walk up to the scarecrow. Get key #1.

  • Walk back across the bridge, down the ramp and go right.

  • Blow up rocks in the river in front of pool with fish swimming around the crate.

  • Then build a bridge to the pool.

  • Catch all of the fish swimming around the crate.

  • When they are all caught, open crate for key #2.

  • Go back to the area on the left side of the river.

  • Go to a white tree on a hill toward the bottom and near the far left side of this area.

  • Blow up tree and a crate falls to ground. Open crate and get key #3.

  • When you have all keys go to the chest and open it.

  • Talk to Willy.

  • Walk back across James' bridge to the middle left side of the screen and talk to Willy.

  • Get the next quests.

Chili Cook Off

  • After you talk to Willy, Peppers Callihan will challenge you to a chili cook off.

  • Gather the ingredients.

  • Your farms will box up the carrots and corn for you.

  • Hunt some deer and fish for the red snapper located at the bottom right of the screen.

  • To get to the snapper, you will have to build a bridge.

  • Sometimes a wolf is around the pond. You may have to kill it first.

Continue Building Your Town

  • Build a Blacksmith Shop and employ someone there.

  • Next buy the gold mine from the store at the top of the screen.

  • Build a gold mine near where Redd hid his supplies.

  • Employ your prospectors there.

  • If at any time you need experience points or gold, you can do a side quest from the sheriff's office or the trading post.

Rescue the Mechanic

  • Before you go, be sure you have all the gunslingers you can get and all the deputies you can hire.

  • When you get to the town, position the lawmen and gunslingers in front of the buildings.

  • Set the townsfolk to work at the lumber camp, the gold mine, and farm.

  • Build a cabin or two to get some more workers.

  • As you have the resources, rebuild the town.

  • If you need more gunslingers, employ someone at the saloon long enough to hire more gunslingers.

  • You may want to build a well to help your crops grow.

  • Once the town is rebuilt, fire one of your workers and hire them at the general store so you can purchase dynamite.

  • Blow up the blockade to distract the bandits.

  • Once they clear the gate, get the mechanic and go through the gate to the arrow and head back to town.

Get the Engine

  • To get the engine, you will have to keep the fires going.

  • Pick up all the loose wood and gold around the camp.

  • Have one of the settlers build a lumber camp.

  • Put your gunslingers near the camp.

  • Have your hero chop wood.

  • Put two workers to work at the lumber camp.

  • As soon as one of the fires goes weak, give it wood.

  • Your gunslingers will take care of the wolves.

  • As long as the fires stay lit, the wolves will only attack near the lumber camp.

Recover the Drill

  • To recover the drill, the people will open the first door for you.

  • The other person will go with you.

  • To open the first door, have your hero stand on one trigger and Hank on the other trigger. This will open the door on the left.

  • Take one of your people and go stand on the switch in that room. That will open the door in front of you.

  • Bring both people through the door, up the hill and down to the right.

  • Have one of them stand on the switch in front of you.

  • When the door opens, leave the person on the switch and walk the other through.

  • Now move the person off the switch and back onto it again.

  • The door that was just walked through will close and the one next to it will open.

  • Have the first person walk through this door and step on that switch. This will open the 3rd door in the previous area.

  • Have them walk back into the area with three doors.

  • Now have the other person step off the switch they are on and back on it again to reopen the door for them to walk through.

  • Take both people through the third door.

  • Now if you want, you can fish in the pond to get the key to open the door in the top right.

  • This will get you the dynamite and you can go back to blast through the rocks and get all the stuff back a couple of areas.

Here is the part that most people seem to be having trouble with.

  • Put each person on one switch, this will open the door in front of you.

  • Now move the person on the right through the door.

  • When they move off of the switch, the door to THEIR right is opened.

  • Go through that door.

  • Take the person still outside the first door and move them to the switch on the right.

  • This will open the door in front of the person inside.

  • Take them through that door and step on the switch.

  • Leave this person standing on the switch and take the one outside in through the door and to THEIR left.

  • When they step on that switch, the main doors will open.

  • Now you have to take this person back out the first doors to stand on the switch on the right again so your other person can get out.

  • Move them both into the final big area.

  • They should now each step on a switch to the right, this will open the door to where the drill bit is.

  • Bring one of your people in to get the drill bit and the final door will open to get you back to the beginning.

  • Redd will come back during these quests. Have him build a cabin and then put him to work.

  • To put the drill together, drag your gunslingers and some of your deputies over to the drill. This will keep the bandits at bay while the drill is being put together.

  • Once the drill is together, have your hero dynamite the rock in front of the hill where the drill is.

  • The competition will begin and you will lose.

  • This will end the first half of the game.

As you travel to the new town, you first have to catch the "dog".

To find the hidden treasure, you have to build a well in the middle of the blue rocks near the sunken house....but the second time I played, it didn't work.....To make it through the part where you have to build 3 graveyards, build tents (or houses but they are more expensive) and keep building some so you don't run out of people....(I kept an average of 5-8 that weren't possessed) The part I haven't found is the red flowers for the stranger (he had different names each time I've played) and how to get grapes because i uncovered the winery, but i have to build a farm and grow grapes before i can build it and I can't figure out how to get the grape upgrade....help me out somebody please if you've found these 2 things....t-y

For the rebuilding the 3 cementarys I found it easiest to take the three people you have, employ one to the lumber camp, one to the farm, and bounce the other between the saloon and general store. Gather gold and hire two gunslingers. Take out the bandits as quickly in the game as you can. The pumpkin head horseman will not come as frequently then. Then build a cabin and a gold mine in the water. Gather the gold to repair the cementary and remember you need to build a church first. I tried the other way listed first and it got spendy fast.
    Hope it works for you.

Stuck on the drill quest. I keep getting my fighters killed and buildings destroyed slowly but surely (why the gunslingers can't regenerate health the way bandits do...). Any advice on what kind of party to take and what priority to staff/rebuild things in? Further, what constitutes success for the quest goals? I once managed to get all the structures in town repaired, but didn't get a check for that goal. I can see a bandit camp that I suspect needs clearing to finish defending, but I can't get to it past the doors.

On the drill quest I took all 6 lawmen, you need to make sure you repair everything completely, including the mine in the SE corner. Sometimes if the bandits come in they will damage again. Once you repair the General Store you can employ someone and get First Aid. Once you're completed it will tell you that you need to take the mechanic as escape by blowing up the blocked gate on the W to create a diversion then escaping through the S Bandit camp, they will open the gate. Hope that helps.

    @laina - Drill recovering quest

I hope, this is,where you have your problems with
First door - 1 on 1 switch other guy on the other. This will open the door on the left.
Take 1 of your people and go stand on the switch in that room. That will open the door forward.
Bring both people through the door, up the hill and down to the right. Have 1 of them stand on the switch in front of you.
When the door opens, leave the person on the switch and walk the other through.
Now move the person off the switch and back onto it again. The door that was just walked through will close and the 1 next to it will open.
Have the first person walk through this door and step on that switch, this will open the 3rd door in the previous area. Have them walk back into the area with 3 doors.
Now have the other person step off the switch they are on and back on it again to reopen the door for them to walk through. Take both people through the 3rd door.
Now if you want you can fish in the pond to get the key to open the door in the top right. This will get you the dynamite and you can go back to blast through the rocks and get all the stuff back a couple areas.
Here is the part that most people seem to be having trouble with. Put each person on 1 switch, this will open the door in front of you.
Now move the person on the right through the door. When they move off of the switch the door to THEIR right is opened, go through that door.
Take the person still outside the first door and move them to the switch on the right, this will open the door in front of the person inside.
Take them through that door and step on the switch. Leave this person standing on the switch and take the 1 outside in through the door and to THEIR left. When they step on that switch the main doors will open.
Now you have to take this person back out the first doors to stand on the switch on the right again so your other person can get out.
Move them both into the final big area.
They should now each step on a switch to the right, this will open the door to where the drill bit is.
Bring 1 of your people in to get the drill bit and the final door will open to get you back to the beginning.

But you already have the winery? If not, complete the smuggler quest

Sue, to add to what Kayleigh suggested just a little bit: Gold comes in several forms, but one that may not seem apparent when you first get started off are the veins. If you can't find any bags or nuggets lying around, also keep a weathered eye open for gray rocks with streaks of yellow in them. You can right click these to mine.

Not exactly sure if there are any available on the granary quest, but if you're stuck, it might be something to be on the look out for.

    @Ina Ervik

The outpost is the first one behind the bridge picture in the "build - tool"
    The train station

That is an upgrade for after you have an outpost. First you have to purchase the train track upgrade from the store. Then if you click on the outpost building, there is a button there to click on - kind of like the fortification button on the lumber mill and it will update from a wagon to a train

Not exactly sure where you are at because I'm far from finishing the game myself, but if you are where I think you are, you should have a well built amid some blue rocks. You're supposed to right click your character on the well and you should get a message saying something to the effect of if you want to dive through. That should get you to a pond and the treasure chest should be near by.

    @jesha

Build a bridge to reach the island with two sticks of dynamite. Go north and build a bridge. Save your first lumberjack. From there go west. Blow up the boulder with one dynamite to reach the second lumberjack. You can build a bridge to reach the island with one dynamite stick. So now you have 2 sticks. Go south. These is a female lumberjack, reach her with a bridge. Go in the river. Next to the gold mine there is a boulder. Blow it off with a dynamite. Go down in the river to reach the fourth lumberjack. Continue in the river towards a bit north to see anouther boulder. Blow it off with your last dynamite. You can now reach the 5th lumberjack. So you don't need to build bridges to reach everyone. Two of them can be reached by clearing blockage in the river and walking up from the river to the land they stand on.

    @Jenn
Is that the quest, who is stealing the money?

South of town there's a place with a bunch of animals in it. It is closed off. Blow up the fence and the wolves will be able to get to their hunting ground

Don't know if anyone's addressed the tunnel/hide exchange problem, but here's what I did: Go to the tunnel in the back of the main area that leads to the two tunnels on the left. Come out one, go in the other, and it leaves you just on the other side, behind the main area. Go back in the tunnel you just came out of, and it will put you facing the front of the scene in a very small area, near the burned out bridge. There is a hidden cave there on the character's left (your right). Blow that up, and you'll have the entrance opened on the extreme left. Get both characters through and you're done!

To get to that side of the river, you have to first come across the lumberjacks stranded on a little island. You do this by walking through the river to head south. Once you do this you will get the lumberjack quest, after which you can build bridges.

BUT, you have to have a lumber mill, not to be confused with lumber camp, built. You have one already there for you in the lumberjack quest, but once you get back to your city, you don't have a lumber mill any more.

So, get the lumber mill built after the lumber jack quest, and then you build the bridge from that island to the black bear area.

Thanks for the help, Kayleigh. Now, can anyone tell me how I chop down the tree? Do I have the right one? I think it's by the guy who needed the hill re-forested. All the bears were around it. Reply

Chryzz, it could be that you don't have enough resources to build another bridge just yet. Check to see what you need and that the start of the bridge is on the side of the river your hero is on. I got mine stuck and it took forever to figure out how to get her to the start of the bridge. I ended up having to build a second one so she could reach the first.

You need to blow up the gate to allow them access to all the fenced in animals to the S of the town.

    Reply

Chryzz, it could be that you can't build another bridge til the one you started is either finished or destroyed. What about having another character who can get to the bridge finish it and then you can have your hero build one he can get to? Maybe if you try that, you will be able to get unstuck. Hope that helps.

Liss, even though it says chop the tree down, we can dynamite it instead? Gonna try it now and will let you know if it works.

I'm stuck on the challenge to save the lumberjacks. I have all but the one in the SW corner of the challenge, where the lumberjack is standing with some gold next to him. The game won't let me build a bridge to him, saying it's obstructed, when it looks like it shouldn't be, and there's no way to walk to him. There is a gold mine in the water that is preventing me from building a bridge. I am currently standing on the island where I saved a female lumberjack that was with some crates, I think... I'm at my wit's end with this one. I've already started over twice now.

    Reply

You have to dynamite the rocks in the water. Go over the bridge to where the man in the middle island was and go down the ramp. Go around to the rocks in the water and blast them. Then you can go up the ramp to your last person.

    2) What is the 3rd shop item?

    3) Can you return to the Main town after you do the Earthquake Challenge.

    4) I employed Jake at the Town Hall, why is he not mayor? Is this pending the majority vote?

Oh, and I have 1 left that I cannot find anywhere, I'm about to start blowing up buildings. I hate Easter Eggs.

    Reply

This is for Chyzz specifically because I had something similar happen to me at a different portion of the game, and this is going to dovetail somewhat smoothly towards a more general hint for everyone who may be getting stuck in various spots.

As for your problem with building a bridge, there are points in the game where you can't perform certain actions without completing other quests first. So, your bridge may not be complete if you have one of these sidequests still hanging out there.

Check first to see what quest specifically is in the corner, and if that gives you no clues, then click your quest button to see how many open quests you have and if any are capable of being completed before you build that bridge.

Now, because there are certain things that have to be done in a certain order, this also means certain events won't get triggered until after you've performed a specific action, talked to a certain person, etc.

Where this becomes a general hint for everyone is that before you go into a major quest one way or another, if you can avoid the triggering event, you can use this time to gather resources and make sure that you are the best prepared for what is about to come.

An example of this is the quest for the inventor of the steam powered drill. Here you have to rebuild a town while periodically defending it from bandits. You can't actually do any repair work or building before you fine the inventor, but until you find the inventor you will not come across any bandit raids, meaning that you can scoop up all the free resources before actually activating the quest, putting you in a very strong position to get a good start and increase your chance for success by having the resources necessary to build and repair buildings, and even deploying wisely your gunslingers.

    Hope that helps for now!

    @TJ Spring
Ok, let's see, if I can at least answer a few of your questions :)
The easter eggs are a quest and you have to find them
    To get the quest

You have to get the ostriches to get to the easter eggs. Build 3 ranches and grow the 3 farm animals

Location of all 15 easter eggs

1 - In front of the cave entrance in the water (SW corner of map)
2 - In the water at the bottom of the waterfall
3 - By the rock pile in the south area where there bears are
4 - Behind the farthest right tree (stump) where the land slide is
5 - Behind the tree on the right side of the waterfall
6 - Behind the bush on the left side of the bandit's gun shop/gold mine
7 - Behind the farthest left tree behind the outpost (right across the river from #4)
8 - Where the treasure chest is
9 - Behind the rocks in the NE water pond
10 - To the right of #7 behind the rotted tree
11 - To the right of #8 behind the rock pile
12 - Near the large tree blocking the path near the 3 professional challenge guys
13 - Just above #11 in the alcove
14 - Behind the right big tree above the blue rock circle
15 - On top of the hill in the SW corner of the map

    The hats

    There are 9 hats
    1. Merlin
    2. Viking
    3. Cowboy
    4. Trojan
    5. Pirate
    6. Fruit
    7. Cheese
    8. Indian Headress
    9. Deer
As you did not finish all quests - the treasure for example, that might be the reason, that you are missing some. When you tell me, which one you are missing, I might be able to help you.

    The Treasure

You can't jump into well until you have completed the other steps.
One chest is up around the outpost area. It is in a fenced in area,
Blow up tree the tree and it will fall on the switch, which opens the gate.
Go to the chest and it gives you a clue about a cabin
Go to the river cave, then go to the well. The blue box is only there if you have activated the easter egg quest

Hope, it will help you a little

    Hi Erika,

I believe there are only the 3 sandbox maps for this one... I've scoured the web looking for others and have found none. The bad news is, those extra maps were downloadable from Sandlot's site and no longer seem to be available now that Digital Chocolate owns the Sandlot stock.

My editorial: it is a shame that a company showing no interest in continuing what Sandlot started (several awesome game series) now controls Sandlot's games. I think we may be mourning that loss for a long time... but, perhaps, if enough fans write to Digital Chocolate with requests for more...

Hi! I'm stuck on the chili cook-off. The walkthru says that my farms will automatically box up the carrots and corn needed but they're not. Do I need to do something else?

I also need help obtaining the 2nd key. I've been fishing this pond trying to catch the fish but they're not disappearing! Any thoughts?

    Hi Blackguard Evony,

For the chili cook-off, once you've accepted the challenge (it will appear on your "Quests" page...click icon on top of screen for more details), if your farms are producing carrots and corn, then they'll box it up. Make sure you've planted the correct crops and that your town isn't starving.

If you're in the correct pond, you'll need to fish for a while until you find a fish with a key in its mouth. You'll receive a pop-up message about it.

My biggest word of advice on all of the WW series games is to save often. It's the easiest way to recover from earthquakes or other disasters (reloading a game) although it is a bit of a cheat. On the other hand, saving often also allows you to go back to a point prior to accepting a quest, just to check on whether you started it properly.

    Hi,

can I go back in the game? I have missed some quests and would like to do them now. I don't have any savegames. I have completed the game and I am missing some of the extra things. 2 hats, 2 extra items at the shop etc. as well as secret buildings etc.
    Thanks in advance.

If you've completed the entire game and have not saved your profile, you are going to need to create a new profile and play again. If you select play for your current profile, the usual result is that they will want to start a new game for that profile.

    Hi Natugle,

Jazz is right. But, it also depends on which quests you're trying to complete (open spoiler to see more).

Some trophies can be done after you finish the main game. In fact, a couple can only be completed in Sandbox Mode. See our strategy guide for more about these.

Any specific quests (a.k.a. missions), though, can only be completed at the time they're offered during the main game. If you fail or if the requirements of the quest run out, you'll need to start over in a new game to begin. For those kinds of quests, you have two options:

    1. Create a new name/new user profile and start from scratch.

    2. -OR-

    3. Select "New Game" for your current profile, in which case you'll keep the trophies you've already obtained and can then focus on the ones you've missed.

I am a Westward addict and am always replaying at least 1 in the 5 game series (although, admittedly, I haven't finished the first yet). To me, it never gets old, there's always new ways to build and, if you play with a different protagonist, you'll start out in a different setting. Plus, If you complete certain missions or trophies, you'll even get certain bonuses (an extra character) on your next play through, so it's always worth it to start again on the same profile. [EDIT: Oops, I was thinking of Westward 4 for the different setting for different protagonist. When you finish with this game, you should give the rest of the series a try, too. :)]

My favorite advice to give out, though: save your game and save strategically! Also, big kudos to you for making it through without having to reload! There are some tough quests (such as the earthquake town) in this game.

A correction on the trading post quests:

NEVER BUILD FARMS. You should never need them, even on the last level. After the fish run out (and I assure you they will on the last level), just have your hero hunt while everyone else does everything else. By this time, all the natural resources that you can get without building should have been exhausted and your hero won't have anything to do.

    Some additional information:

Occasionally, you might need a general store on the trading post quests. Before you build one, make sure that the benefits outweigh the costs. It costs 210 gold and 110 wood to get a general store and buy one dynamite. A gold vein that your hero can mine contains about 100 gold, and a log contains about 80 wood. Remember that it takes time to mine/chop these.

I am having trouble with the Mechanic's quest. No matter how much dynamite I use the blockade never blows up. What is the next option or have I just not placed the dynamite in the correct spot yet. I've done it more than 1 dozen times at this point.
