JessToya Room 2Toya Room 2 is the quintessential example of why I really, really wish I could read Japanese.

Ah, what a beautiful game. And so intriguing! From the first glance onwards, one cannot help but be drawn into the game's vibrant environment. Or, rather, environments—the game really ought to called Toya Rooms. The player starts in the present day, but with a push of a button can be transported into the same room some indeterminable span of time into the past; press another button and the operation is reversed. Two separate, subtly different rooms to zoom between, each one affecting the other... interesting, no?

At least, that's what I think is going on. As you might have surmised from my first comment, the game is entirely in Japanese, and is quite text-heavy; it's equally possible, then, that I have the situation entirely backwards. Whatever the case may be, it seems clear that the game's major goal is to somehow help the odd creature that lies, barely conscious, on the floor of one of the rooms; you'll need to collect items from both time periods to save him/her/it. To be honest, though, you probably won't find this to be too difficult of a task.

Toya Room 2 is beautifully atmospheric, creative, entertaining... there's a lot here to love. Furthermore, I suspect that there's a great story going on; unfortunately, due to the language barrier many players won't be able to follow along. Maddening! The game is also disappointingly short, only containing three real puzzles, and ends with surprising abruptness. On the upside, its relative easiness means that those who cannot read the text will nonetheless be able to successfully complete the game. For a coffee break or brief pause between classes, Toya Room 2 could be just about perfect—a beautiful bite-sized morsel of escapey goodness to tide you through the day.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

Walkthrough

You start with the choice of two dimensions (or different times - I don't know): Blue and Green. You can change dimensions with the two Japanese buttons at the top of the screens. In the Green dimension there is a sleeping alien (or something). Let's see if we can wake it.

If you turn to the left of the bed, you find a calender on the wall and a closet. Notice that the calender is the same for the two dimensions. It shows that todays date is 3. march 2008.

Calender hint

The number 8 can be unfastened in both dimensions. It will disapear.
You can leave it alone and come back to it later.

Items and Dimensions hint

All items are found in the Blue dimension. Notice that items collected in one dimension cannot be used in the other.

I do not speak Japanese. What do I need to do?

You need to locate 5 bottles which correspond to the five symbols on the calender.

The Blue dimension

Location of Bottles:

Bottle A

In the top box next to the bed will find Bottle A

Bottle B

Open the closet next to calender and enter. In the top drawer you will find Bottle B

Bottle C

Found in the right locked shelf under lab-equipment.

Bottle D

Same place as Bottle C

Bottle X

In the Safe

Locked top drawer under computer

The key is found in the bookshelf inside a fake book on the shelf above the russian doll. Inside the drawer is a black key and a memo book.

Locked shelf under lab-equipment.

You need the black key found in the locked top drawer under computer. Inside are Bottle C, Bottle D and a screwdriver

The Poster

Click on the poster until you see the screws that hold it in place. This would be an excellent time to use the screwdriver.

There are three screws.

The Safe

The safe is found behind the Poster
The code for the safe is found in the Memo a few pages to the back. Only half of the code can be seen. A quick guess reveals that

XAVI is the correct code.

Inside is the Bottle X and a Pipette.

The broken flowerpot

Zooming in on the broken flowerpot and clicking on the pieces you will pick up one piece with some green slime on it. Use the Pipette on the slime.

The Green dimension

After finding all the items in the Blue dimension, you will notice that

the Five Bottles and the Pipette is lying next to the Computer

in the Green dimension. Pick up the Pipette.

The Computer puzzle

Click on the Computer and you will be able to mix the contents of the Five Bottles, but in which order?

The Calender shows the order. Start from left and work your way right. My order was C, X, A, B, D. You will get Blue liquid.

Waking the Alien

You should by now have the Blue liquid and the Pipette with the green liquid. Zoom in on the Blue liquid and use the Pipette on this. You will create a syringe. Use the syringe on the Alien. Static fills the room.

The Red dimension

After using the syringe on the Alien, return to the Blue dimension. Notice that the bunny-head is glowing. Click the head. You will pass beyond time and space - or something. Click on the right dimension button. You are now in the Red dimension. And the Alien is still sleeping, but now on the computer desk. Lazy bugger.

The number puzzle

If you haven't found it already there are is a number-puzzle under the carpet. Click on the carpet to remove it. Zooming in reveals a few tiles which can be placed in the square below.
However

They lying face-down. Click on them to turn the tiles over and reveal the numbers.

The tiles have to be placed in a special order.

The number is written in the square.

All the rows, columns and diagonals must add up to 15 (Roman numeral XV).

However, one tile is missing.

It's the number 8. Have you seen it before?

It is on the calender in the year 2008.

If you loosened it in the Green or dimensions it will have dissapeared from the Red dimension. If not, just pick it up.

Is it gone?

Look under the bed.

After finding the last number, place the tiles in the correct location.

The numbers go (left to right, up to down): 4, 3, 8, 9, 5, 1, 2, 7, 6

Now that the tiles are placed correctly you should notice that

The tiles start glowing.

What to do now?

Click on the glowing tiles.

The End

From your description it sounds a little like you thought the game ended when it didn't. Did you get to the "game clear" screen?

Anyway, short but nice game. Thanks.

Bah!! I got up to

opening the safe and filling the eye-dropper with the green liquid

Just tried to do the same thing as above but moved to a different screen and it crashed again! I think I'll take my room-escaping skills to another game!

Wow, this is a beautiful game but so much japanese text! I got to the same stage as djkrpt and my game crashed on me too, so I guess I'll just wait for an English translation before playing again.

Also, the different-times aspect seems like a gimmick rather than an integral part of the game, as you can't (seem) to use objects from one time in another.

After following this site for quite some time now, I finally took the time to register an account so I can brag about completing this one on my own without any kind of help :)

Interesting! I have got as far as the floor puzzle without help, Yeh! Now I am well and truely stuck! The solution to the puzzle is probably obvious, but I have been trying for ages and it just completely elludes me. Can anyone help me with it, please!!!

Do you have all the numbers? Look under the bed.

Oh-er! Long long long loading time for me. Anyone else had to wait ages to play? Jess doesn't mention a long loading time in the review so I'm guessing I'm probably the only one.

Help with the floor puzzle...

About the 8:

If you clicked the 8 on the calendar before reaching the "red" room, it won't be there. Instead, check under the bed.

I got a friend to translate what the fellow is saying. I'm Xavi.

The vital energies are deteriorating. It's necessary to go back to the start and get a vaccine.

Reply

Arrgh. Japanese skills too limited.

Here's what I have so far:

Perhaps obvious: The button on the left says "Past." The button on the right says "Present"

The creature's name is something like Shabi.
It says he needs a vaccine.

The flowers on the floor are Hibiscus.

The manga under the bed is either about or by "Masuko Sensei."

I'm getting the sense that most of the text is just description.

Will post more later when I can.

For some reason the ending is not working the third time round. I have solved the

number tiles to add up to 15 in all directions,

but nothing is happening. Either the game is hung or the walkthrough is incomplete. Anybody had the same problem?

Reply

@JIM
did you click on the circle with the newspaper?

Reply

there's a glitch. everytime i use the pippette on the green slime,it freezes. anyone know what's going on?

Reply

Circle with newspaper? No.
But I tried again (after a restart) and everything worked fine. I completed it three times just to be sure :) Seems the game is a bit buggy at times. Maybe a browser restart would have done the trick, but that ship has sailed.

Reply

Paul: That has never happened to me (Running Linux and tried with Opera and Firefox), but I read from multiple posts that the game is somewhat unstable at times.

Reply

I've tried this in both IE and Firefox and the same thing happens on both browsers. Both the leaf and pippette disappear and I can no longer move. I can still switch between tabs and so on, but I just can't go further.

Reply

Paul: I'm not sure that is a bug...

That is supposed to happen if you've done it right. Check the other dimension (Green). Your pipette should have appeared on the desk by the computer.

Reply
ThemePark March 11, 2009 3:26 PM

About the safe code:

If you zoom in on the trash can next to the computer desk, and then click the outside part of the bottom, it will move and you will see a crumbled piece of paper. Take that, unfold it, and then put it into the memo book, and you will see that the safe code is, in fact, Xavi.

Reply

Paul: although the game shouldn't hang or you be unable to move at any time. If it persists, just restart your machine. I had some trouble earlier and a restart fixed all.

Reply

i don't think that is supposed to happen. there is no arrow button to zoom back out so if it's not a glitch, then the game is unfinishable because i can't keep freezing up like this.

Reply

I've tried at least four times, but keep getting stuck

I get the number puzzle solved, everything reads 15, but I'm unable to do anything from there. The spheres all turn blue, but do not glow. I've tried using the paper on the circle, but it won't combine in any way.

Reply

Finished it totally by myself. It isn't often I can say that. LOL.

With regard to the floor puzzle: the first time I played, a clock with about 3 minutes or so started ticking down. When I didn't complete the puzzle in time, the game was over. No option for continuing. It said: GAME OVER.

The second time I played, there was no such timer. Anyone else encounter this?

Reply

well i mine as well give up because this game won;t quit freezing at the same point everytime. i tried in both IE and Firefox and they both do the same thing at the same spot.

Reply
JoseHeno March 11, 2009 9:04 PM

Finished the game.

Although this is somewhat clear from the style and the difficulty level, the language being used makes the game seem like it was designed for children. What tipped me off was that a couple of the more difficult characters (kanji) had furigana or guidance characters above them, like a pronunciation guide. That, plus the fact that most of the text was relatively redundant "This is a PC." "This is a calendar for March 2008" etc.

It was far beyond my ability to translate most of it, but from what I can gather, I'd say it was geared towards players in elementary or middle school.

I don't mean that in any kind of disparaging way. It's a beautiful game. Just thought I'd share my observations.

And one more thing:

Players who are familiar with Japanese or Chinese won't have a very difficult time with the "elemental labels" puzzle, since the words for all the elements on the bottles(sun, moon, fire, water, wood) figure into the normal names for the days of the week. This should be obvious anyway from how they're placed on the calendar.

Reply

Yes, Bad Dog, I got that too.

I hope someone can be more specific about the final step when stuff starts glowing, because stuff *does* glow... you just can't do anything about it, and then you lose.

Reply

Bad Dog and Shudog:

I got the timer with the Game Over the first time around as well. The second time I played I realized it was because I made all the number rows and columns add up to 15 but not the diagonals! Shame on me for not being a Sudoku fan I suppose, I just wondered why two of the numbers were not "15" and did not realize it was because of the diagonals. I suspect you can avoid a Game Over by fixing the numbers within the time allotted, but I'm not going to play through it yet again just to find out.

Reply
Anonymous March 11, 2009 9:55 PM

BadDog- same thing happened to me with the countdown clock- I did not have the diagonals adding to 15. moved things around and got the glowing numbers, etc.

Reply

obviously no one is experiencing freezeups like i am. weird.

Reply

I solved the puzzle correctly the second time. I knew what I had to do. I just didn't do it fast enough. What was curious was that there was no clock the second time. But clock or no clock, once you do get it right...

...you have to click on the glowing puzzle to finish.

Reply

Erm... i'm having trouble with finding the screws on the poster. Can anybody help me?

Reply

@ RobertoW

Thanks for your help, hint much appreciated, now managed to finish without having to resort to a walk through, regards one happy bunny!!

Reply

Paul: I did experience freezeups, I'm using Firefox on an old Mac (slowish processor) running OS 10.5. Specifically when I got to the number puzzle at the end, the cursor would "spin" and Firefox acted like it was going to croak. Thankfully if I waited it resolved (sometimes I hit Force Quit and then Cancel it, although I can't say if that helped or not). Maybe you need to upgrade your browser or your Flash, or you have other compatibility issues?

Yarr: The screws are not on the movie poster above the computer, they are on the chemistry-looking poster above the bed. Hopefully that was all the was wrong! :)

There's a spot I keep clicking in the first room that navigates away from the page in the same browser window, effectively forcing me to start over again from scratch. Very frustrating. Bad link!

Did anyone else see the video at the end after the "you win" screen? I think it explains about the game more. Looks like there is going to be a "Toya Room 3".

Reply

This is the final escape. Past and Present. Two rooms. I think this game may have got an upgrade..... Or it's been a REALLY long time since i last played.

Reply

i think the 3 minute timer only pops up when

you place the 8 tile on the number puzzle...so put this tile on last! and you will have more time :)
