Legend of the Golden MaskGrinnypAh, the jungles of South America, hot, steamy, lush, and mysterious. A perfect setting for an adventure/hidden object expedition to find a lost artifact! But what if you don't want to go through the trouble of downloading one of the many hybrid titles out there? Just click and check out Legend of the Golden Mask by Candystand, of course!

As the first scene opens you will get the complete story of the (tense-looking) unnamed female protagonist. Her grandfather went missing on an expedition and it falls to her and her mother to clean out the old guy's house. While sifting through the massive piles of extraneous objects, however, you find pieces of the grandfather's journal and learn about the legend that led to his disappearance. Let the adventure begin!

Gameplay begins with a standard hidden object search. Lists of objects to find will show up, along with extras to locate such as gold cubes, pieces of a journal, hint objects, etc. Once you've cleared the scene of one list, an optional second (and harder) list will pop up, giving you an opportunity to search for more objects and increase your score.

What is really refreshing about Legend of the Golden Mask is that Candystand has invested all of the production values of a downloadable game into something that can be played for free in a browser. The artwork is glorious, bright, and near photorealistic. The music is a nice mix of South American rhythms, featuring some rather haunting flute work. The story, although short, is a complete one, with a beginning, middle, and resolution. Gaming can commence in a timed mode (for experienced HOG fans) and a non-timed mode for relaxed, casual gameplay.

Legend of the Golden MaskAnalysis: Legend of the Golden Mask has everything that you might find in a pay/download adventure/hidden object hybrid. Lots of hidden objects (of course), mini-games and puzzles, a storyline that takes you to exotic places, appropriate music, etc. What makes the game special is that it is not just a "play one chapter free" type of enticement to buy the game, but a whole game in and of itself!

Cluttered rooms and objects stashed behind other objects can be slightly irritating in any hidden object game, but in a smaller Flash browser screen, it can be downright painful. Legend of the Golden Mask unfortunately falls victim to this common problem, so the next time you visit your optometrist, tell him you need the special hidden object game lenses. The game is also a bit stingy with the hints, as you can only earn three per level and they don't roll over from scene to scene.

Other than size and hint issues, there is not much to complain about. The mini-games and puzzles are ones that have been used many times before in HOG titles, but it is still a pleasant surprise to find such a variety in a Flash game. Jigsaw-type puzzles, hidden match puzzles, find the differences, even a gear puzzle show up to make the gaming experience feel like the real, full-sized downloadable thing. Another wonderful feature is high replay value. Each time you start the game, the list of objects to find is different, as are puzzle solutions!

While not as long as a full-sized downloadable game, Legend of the Golden Mask is a complete adventure, a perfect way to while away an afternoon, or a coffee break. Ultimately a fun, casual gameplay experience can be had by all.

Nice game. Occasionally you get that WRRAUGH moment when you're expected to recognise an object from a tiny corner, but that's in most hidden object games.

And the spot-the-difference thing doesn't match up with the intro quite amusingly:

"We'd best pack up! I'll just pack up one coil of this rope, this flock of birds, this aeroplane...

Reply

All right... I've never played a hidden object game, as the concept sounded unappealing and you usually have to download them, which is something I'll only do for stuff that sounds really interesting. But I tried this one, just to see what the genre is like and, well... I have to say I don't understand the point of having a framing narrative. I mean... the heroine is going on an expedition to the South American jungle, and to prepare she buys

- a bicycle gear wheel
- a snow shovel
- a dart board
- a gas mask... ?!

It seems to me that - unless absurdist humour is the intended effect - the search for hidden objects in busy images would be better served if it were just declared as, y'know, searching for hidden objects in busy images

Then again, maybe I just don't have the right frame of mind. *g*

Does it have a particularly long load time? (There are only 16 people playing at the moment!)

Reply

I like this game so far. I actually prefer hidden object games that have a story behind them (got Hidden Expedition: Everest for free with a code a few months ago and STILL can't figure out what's going on).

I agree that some of the objects you have to find are on the ridiculous side (I always bring a dartboard, my guitar, AND my violin on long sea voyages to go deep into the jungle!), but I'm okay with that.

Something else I found was that at least in casual mode your hints do NOT carry over into the next level, so use them up if you find them!

Reply

I wish it would tell you how many golden cubes you had total, so I could figure out if it was worth bothering looking for the last one on level 10 . . .

Reply

I found something odd. I'm always worried about the boundaries of the visible playing area and the menu in these things, covering up objects. I was randomly clicking the menu area that shows how many gold boxes you have and *poof* I found a gold box. How was I suppose to see it behind the menu?

This was a good game, I enjoyed it.

I am on level 6 and am looking for a match, but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone tell me where it is?

Reply
mario fan8 October 8, 2009 10:09 PM

nevermind I found it.

Reply

I can't for the life of me find the last golden cube on the first level.... If I don't use up my hints, will it show me where it is?

Reply

I'm stuck for the last golden cube on level 10.

These are the ones I've located so far:

  • On a shelf in the back left

  • Below the stack of books at the left edge of the screen

  • The golden toucan statue is sitting on one

  • Behind the stem of the large goblet in the middle of the bottom edge of the screen

If you've solved this level, may I have a hint as to where to find the last cube? : D

Of course, now that I've posted here I'll probably spot it as soon as I go back to the game!

Reply

I am so astounded by the graphics and intricate design! Though my only pet-peeve would be a little too much on the dialog-side.

Reply
Soldier of Light October 9, 2009 1:51 AM

I'm looking for that same golden cube on the last level. No clue where it is.

Reply

Okay, I found it. Here's how - By quitting out to the menu and restarting the level enough times to learn enough item locations that I'd have a hint left after both sets of regular items - the hints won't ordinarily show you cubes, but they do if there are no regular objects left to find!

Of course I forgot to write down the exact location of the cube, but I think it was

above the golden mask to the left of the sarcophagus. It's kind of behind the mask, and the top edge of the cube is horizontal.

The first time I played the memory puzzle, I timed out, and the game wouldn't let me retry, it went straight to the ending cutscenes, so I had to start over. Given that you have to collect EVERY golden cube along the way in order to open the vault in level 10, the contents don't seem like much of a reward.

Reply

I needed a magnifying glass to see most of the items on here, something I've never had to do before with any hidden object game.

Reply

I really liked this one, but there are a few ways it could have been made better:

- Hints carrying over, particularly since I never found more than 3 on any given level, and didn't start to need them until well into the jungle.

- Ability to replay levels in story mode, purely to satisfy my perfectionist tendencies... and to get those elusive cubes.

- A little more contrast on some objects, others a little larger. The bird and boomerang and the bat in the last level, for instance, could give you eye strain trying to work out what that something is; clearly 'a' hidden object, but 'what' hidden object? And there was a snowglobe in the gear room that was so tiny I wasn't sure how one was expected to know it was a snowglobe.

- Clarity in item naming, or multiple-accept items. If you ask me for "a knife" and there is a pocket knife, a kitchen knife, and a butter knife in the picture, you'd better accept all three as correct.

Reply

I'm having trouble figuring out what some of the clues mean. For example, what is a chain lock? Does that mean padlock? If not, what is it? There are several of those that I wonder if I need to use Google just to interpret the clues!

I also agree that it's often hard to figure out WHICH item to click on...kept clicking on a letter A for about 5 minutes before I realized there was another identical one in another part of the screen. ARGH!

Reply

Complaints aside, it's a really really beautiful game. Kudos for making this a casual game. I loved not having to download anything else to my computer!! Nice job, Candystand.

Reply

Looks beautiful but as gameplay it's pointless waste of time. I normally like memory-click games but this one is terrible. Can't tell what some of the descriptions mean, and even if I know what I'm looking for, the objects blend into the background too well. After the first few levels I'm essentially clicking randomly, hoping that I find enough that I can solve the last few with my hints.

I have found all diary pieces but one. If anybody could help me I'd be very thankful! And some of you might need to find this one.

Look at the big map near the top right, is it square?

Not exactly a direct area, but you get it.

Beautiful graphics, great soundtrack and effects to create ambience, but *garrgghh!*.
Nice to see a free play game with so much to offer, but *garrgghh!*.
I am obviously not a true hidden object game fan, 'cause I think that those who are will enjoy this one.

Hello ! Has anyone any idea of where on earth (or in the dark) could be the hidden gears on level 9 ?

Reply

Hello!

I like this type of games, however you can get pretty tired about looking too much in to the scenes. Also, in my pespective, some of the objects are way too small, I had to actually stop playing for a while because my eyes started to hurt.

Has anybody be able to find the whole ten pieces of the picture of the grandfather?

About the location of the match,

look for it around the stairs in the middle of the scene

I've played many games on this wonderful site, and I first want to thank Jay & Co. for many hours of enjoyment over the years.

This game was the first that irritated me enough to comment. The graphics and other basics were great, and it could have rather easily been a great game overall rather than extremely frustrating. My issues:

- In casual (un-timed) mode, the puzzles do have a time limit, and if you fail to complete a puzzle the first time, the game completes it for you (nooooo!). While the almost always far too easy jigsaw-type puzzles were boring as usual, I was greatly frustrated by only having one chance to try to finish the gear puzzle and the last, fairly large hidden match puzzle.

I wish the game either had un-timed puzzles in casual mode or allowed a player to retry a failed puzzle at their option, because by the time you get through the rather tortuous hidden object levels, a player needs a break (particularly here) from squinting and views the mini-game/puzzle as a welcome reward and break.

- There were FAR too many WRRAUGH moments caused by items that were either ridiculously small, in very dark areas, 97% hidden, or impossible to otherwise even identify from the clue word. Further, unlike the found cubes or photo pieces which expanded for viewing after being found, found items simply disappeared, leaving me to wonder at least 30 times which object it was or what it looked like. Far beyond being fun, this was just irritating.

- As mentioned above, any balance of the three hints that could be found per level should transfer to the next level. Game designers should have at least 20 "normal" people play these games before deciding "3 is enough" - in advanced levels, three is most certainly is not sufficient. I finished this game's more difficult levels only by clicking on every part of the screen until I had enough hints left to cover the remaining items to find. Those levels were 0% enjoyable, and my hand hurts a lot.

- It appeared to me that in the absence of available hints, the only option if a last item or two couldn't be found was to end the game, which hardly qualifies as fun in my book. I never tried the "end level" button so perhaps I'm mistaken. (Although the total number of gold cubes needed wasn't stated until near the end which was odd, I did not leave a level without finding all items.)

- I agree with the writer above about the disappointing ending. When will game creators realize that a big part of the payoff for finishing a game is the last screen(s) when you're rewarded with an imaginative story ending, fabulous, celebratory visuals, then congratulated? To me this seems very basic. To only see a mask, stock drivel about the reunion of the protagonist and her grandfather and "The End" here was a let-down.

- Unlike the writer above, I actually like the WRRAUGH moments when there's more than one type of object represented by a clue word. It's sneaky, but still fair play in my book.

I entirely agree with writer Pesky's comment - this game is a pointless waste of time, and it shouldn't be. It's a shame Candystand only got it 97% right - it's a beautiful game - and fell down on the far more basic structural issues. I really hope Candystand edits it to fix the above issues. Thank you - I wrote in the hope Candystand may read this.

Thank you again for a GREAT, wonderfully designed site, Jay! :) Please, more games you don't have to download - that's much appreciated!

I liked it. But then, I like Graeme Base books. It's indeed not bad for a coffee break, but woe betide anyone with dark monitors. You'll be out of luck. There are a few minor, minor mistakes in the Spot the Differences sections (unintentional differences which are not clickable).

I did like the cleverness of the clue fakeouts

a beetle is also a car! a watermelon can be sliced! a watch doesn't need a band and a tiger doesn't have to be a real tiger...

but there is one that drove me crazy which is, technically, correct... it's just going to throw off most American players, IMO.

"Paprika" is what I'd call a pepper. Yes, I looked it up and the original fruit is an ingredient in paprika, but with so many containers also being used in the game, it's confusing. So... yes, you're looking for a bell pepper every time.

The main character being a woman is great, though at times she is a bit less than fearless (and why does she need a flower on her helmet? that's just going to attract insects. she's already wearing mascara in the jungle.) I do wish there had been a bit more mentioned of how they're gratuitously stealing bits of culture from Mesoamerican and African civilizations. Or if she'd done some of the scholarship herself...

Reply

This was brilliant - thank you JIG! I dig hidden object games and this followed the traditional format very closely. It looks beautiful as well, which is a big factor in the genre.

All I can hope for is more from Candystand and that maybe Big Fish will port some of their games online as well...

how do you get past level 9?...im confused and stuck on the game i need to find scissors and i need a screw i cant find them!!!

Level 9, I think the screw was on one of the tips of the large gear. The scissors are above the gear that looks like a wagon wheel.

I'm trying to find the pistol.

I'm at the end of the Story Mode and the Druid shows me the entire stone wheel and tells me to "click and drag to match the color". Been doing that for the last 1/2 hour but nothing is happening???
Anyone have a clue on the trick to that last screen???

OMGZ!!! Cant figure out what the @^%&#$* a setsquare is. PLZ HALP!!!!!!!!!! P.S. I found everything but a setsquare on lvl 9; missing a gear. Rly trying hard, but i think my brains are gonna come squeltching out of my eye sockets. Can someone be more precise about where ALL gears are?

The last two cubes are extremely well hidden. On is about dead center of the pannel where the list of objects is shown. The other is right behind the lady's head, at the curve of her neck. I found it by accident.

Does anyone know where the heck to find the calipers in the attic (first scene).

Unfilled requests
Level 1 - Attic

calipers
I believe those are on the far left bookshelf behind the ruler

Level 9 - Cogs!

scissors

in the dark room to the right of the large cog, to the left of the emerald

screw

the large wheel on the right, one of its spokes/teeth towards the middle

flute

look at the dark doorway -- right on the threshold, standing vertical, somewhat below the emerald

pistol

top left. its handle is sticking out where the rope, beam, pillar form a gap

setsquare

on the right side of the center junk mountain, under the scarf

Level 10

bottle
