Dungeon Escape!ArtbegottiOnce upon a time (about seven years ago), there was a brave man who got locked up inside a dungeon. As he fought to escape the many rooms of the dungeon, he found that many more rooms were added over the course of the next few years. Originally featured here back in 2006, Studiohunty is proud to present the completed version of the point-and-click puzzle game, Dungeon Escape!

In the style of old laserdisc arcade games such as Dragon's Lair and Space Ace, the goal of Dungeon Escape! is to quickly click the flashing ovals to let your hero (named "Guy") react to his surroundings. Clicking too slowly or clicking in the wrong area means an unfortunate (yet oddly humorous) death. Some rooms might take a single click to escape from, while others require a complex chain of ten or more clicks to conquer. You're allowed to die three times, but after that, it's game over.

While the graphics are much simpler than the original Don Bluth animations, Dungeon Escape! still packs a lot of quirk and pizzazz into each scene. In fact, this is one of the few games where I've found myself to be laughing when I die (which happens a lot). To make it through the game, it might take a bit of memorization to recall where the hotspots are in each scene, but more importantly, fast reflexes and an agile clicker-finger (touchpad users might have difficulty with this game). So if you're ready to take a trip back to the 80's (or a few years ago, which ever is more comfortable for you), lead on, brave stick figure! Your destiny awaits!

I haven't completed the game yet, but I've gotten to the point where I started redoing levels. Here's an explanation of the level system for those of you who haven't already figured it out.

The level system basically has an intro (level 0), three sets of 9 levels, and 3 bosses. The bosses are at levels 10, 20, and 30. Once you finish all levels except the last boss, you will repeat any levels you died at.

I'll write up a walkthrough from memory of levels 20+, not including the last boss.


Walkthrough of levels 20+ (some from memory)

It's more reliable to learn the clicks from trial and error, but it gets tedious practicing the later levels. Hopefully this will help.

I won't mention this for individual clicks, but obviously don't click until it flashes.

Dragon boss

You have to be fast for this one. Click floor right, floor center, dragon (quickly), floor center, left wall, center (quickly), floor left, floor center, floor far left, right wall, dragon head.

Sneaking past guard

This is the easiest of the later levels. Just click on the door.

Leaking wall

This one is easy. Click on the leak, wait for the scene to change and click on the vine in the center.

Yellow Ninjas

wait through the scene. Click on the moon when you jump. More scene... When it shows your feet running, and click on them. In the big view, click on your sword

Square staircase

Click on each corner of the staircase in order. When you get to the top, rather than clicking on the top stair, click on the rope near it. You'll start ziplining. Dodge left and right. Click in the center, and click on the bottom of the rope (you should already be lined up for the rope).

Green goo

Click on the goo, staircase, chandelier, (scene change), next two chandeliers in order, rope above last chandelier.

Library

(From memory) Click on the lowest blue book, other blue books going up, slightly above rather than on last book, right side of room, (scene change), left fist of fire monster, right fist of fire monster.

Wall with a face

(from memory) Two clicks to dodge two attacks, click nose in center, click lower center.

Mummy

Click on the mummy, left spear, left torch, lower part of mummy (for the sword).

Fire room and dragon

(I haven't completed this one yet, so there may be more steps). Click on the window on the right, (scene change), stalagmite, ceiling, stalagtite, top of stalagtite, (maybe right wall), dragon's head, (might be more steps).


I'm out! The steep challenge made the victory much more satisfying.

Oh, and sorry for the triple post. I'll add a bit to the walkthrough so this comment has a more of a purpose.

Walkthrough (Fire room and last boss)

Here's a correction for the fire room first.

First click right to jump through the window, (Scene change), click on stalagmite, click on ceiling, click ceiling again, click on stalactite, click on upper part of stalactite, click on serpent's head (will be a bit down and left from the center), and you're out.

Now the last boss

If you lose to the last boss, you'll go back to the beginning and you'll reset to 3 lives. So it's best not to mess up. However, getting to the last boss means you've beat the rest of the levels, so it will be easier to get back again. After I got to the last boss the first time, I got back there with every subsequent playthrough (4 tries total).

I won't do a specific click-by-click for this one, since I only completed it once and didn't record it. However, here's a guide for the trickier clicks.

Click at the top of the tower. (Scene change) He'll attack you and nock away your sword. You'll go after your sword. Next he'll summon warriors. You can beat the warriors pretty easily, since the click range is large. Once you get to him, there may be a click before this but you click between his legs. Next click in front of him and it's pretty straitforward from there. There will be some scenes after you beat him, but there won't be any more clicks. The clicks that tricked me were the top of the tower and between the boss's legs. Hopefully it will take you fewer playthroughs with this guide.

I don't think I ever have, of ever will again, write "click" so many times in one walkthrough

Addictive, but sometimes I wish that after you die they'd give you the option of trying whatever room you were in over from the start instead of making you move on to a new one, especially given how unforgiving many of these rooms can be to first-time visitors.

Oh fun! I remember when the incomplete version came out. Entertaining diversion.

I do find it a little odd, though, that when you die, you resume in the next scene, instead of having to try the failed scene again.

You do have to beat every level, actually. Any levels you die on get added in at the very end.

Also, I think I've found a bug. On the final level, I died on the first click, and it sent me all the way back to start! If this is intentional, I'll be really angry.

Well, on one hand, there's a reason this type of game died out. That being said, I really got a kick out of it! It brings a good bit of nostalgia to the table, and I'm willing to bet it's a little more lenient than the inspiring games. It's tough, but the speed and amusing areas are what keeps you coming back for more and more... deaths.

Fun...until the 50th time through or so. Suggestion: Break it up into "levels," each level consisting of a set of rooms (in randomized order, still). Levels can be saved, allowing the ability to start later at the last level not completed. That way I don't have to keep playing the early rooms over and over and over and over to get to the higher ones, while making the inevitable eyes-glazed-over mistake that makes me want to hurl my computer out the window, since I know I'm going to need all my lives later on. I'm especially susceptible to zoning out in the magic wand room, having seen it more times than I can count.

The "cinematic" with the ninja fight is EVIL and sneaky. :D

This is a great game, but it'll take me quite a while to get through all of the scenes all in one go. I get plenty of practice on the earlier scenes, but it gets tedious going through them over many replays to get to the later scenes. Perhaps if lives were awarded periodically, or there were checkpoints, this game would be a lot less harsh.

Regardless, I can see myself replaying this until I get to the end.

YAY! I BEAT IT! I think the

Room with the water leak

and the

room with the sleeping skeleton

were much too easy for the place they were at.

A walkthrough would not be very useful, I think. The rooms are randomly generated, except for some (like the first one); the only way to really get good is to play again and again until you memorize most of the rooms. But sure, here's a partial walkthrough - it includes only those rooms before the "wand room", which is another non-randomly-generated room; it only appears after you have completed all of these rooms, and none of the rooms that come after the wand room ever come before it.

Room 1

Click on the cell door when the jailer passes through to steal the key.
Click on the exit to avoid the skeleton warrior.

Falling-floor Room

This room is different from the Cross-shaped room; it has a tiled floor, and the perspective is straight on instead of isometric.
Click on the left door to escape the floor falling out from under you.

Colossus Room

Click the bottom middle to run away from the colossus.
Click bottom rightish to dodge the skeleton warrior.
Click bottom right, the door, to jump out of the way of the colossus.

Cross-shaped Falling-Floor Room

Click the middle of the cross.
Click the top-left part of the cross.
Click the top-right part of the cross.

Ninja Room

Click under the dining table to dodge the ninja's attack.
Click the ninja when he appears to the left to fling a plate at him.
Click the ninja when he appears in the center to fling a plate at him.
Click the left side of the dining table to shield yourself against the ninja's fireball.
Click the right side of the dining table to shield yourself against the ninja's fireball.
Click the button on the right to drop the chandelier on the ninja.

Skeleton Statues Room

Click the bottomish middle, away from the door, to avoid the falling statue.
Click the left door to attack the skeleton that comes through.

Falling Stones Room

This is a really difficult room; the timing is very unforgiving.
Click to your right to jump on the stone that falls there.
Click where you were before, but a bit higher (now your left) to jump on the stone that falls there.
Click to your left and a bit higher to jump on the stone that falls there.
Click above yourself to jump on the stone there.
Click to your right to enter the door.

Garden Room

Click the first bend in the road to dodge the topiary.
Click the second bend in the road to dodge the next topiary.
Click the end of the road to dodge the final topiary.

Garden Room II

Click the door to go back in.

Axe Room

Click to your left to dodge the axe.
Click about the same area to dodge the next axe.
Click the area a bit higher and to the right to dodge the last axe.

Crushing Walls Room

This one requires very fast reflexes. It is easy to identify as you will see you have entered an empty room.
Click the door near the top.

There's a bug that sometimes occurs in the spinning room. Sometimes when you're clicking a hotspot, no more hotspots will appear and instead the stick guy will keep moving to the exit by himself, avoiding all traps automatically. Once he's through the door, you will see your stick guy where he was at before and you will see his death. I think it only happens when you don't click the hotspot in time, but it doesn't happen every time you do that.

I finished Dungeon Escape, and I absolutely loved it!

Initially, I would have preferred not replaying the first twenty levels over and over then dying immediately on the last ten, but now that I have finally beaten it, I wouldn't change that at all.

Aegeus mentioned a bug on the last level.

Yeah, I had two lives left when I missed a click in between the final boss' legs. That sent me back to the beginning.

That was very infuriating. If that wasn't intentional, please fix that.

On the other hand, it was easy to get back to the final boss and win the game after that.

Yes, it was the fireworks death. And JIGuest makes it sound like this happens anywhere in the final sequence, it's just that it's easiest to die at the fireworks.

Fun game. I can sometimes make it to the end room, but I really need to practice the levels starting at the sword some more.

I also want to die in as many ways as possible, just to see if the creator put in a funny death animation. There's quite some work put in those as well.

OK, I've fixed the bug that was making the game reset completely if you died at any point on the last level. Thanks to the brave souls who found that bug!

That was a great game. I finally beat it.

I noticed something about this game. Usually I play a casual game to the end, the first time around or give up and don't come back to it.

The first time I played it, I kept playing and eventually got too frustrated, but I found out, that if you don't play too long and you come back to the game next day, it isn't nearly as frustrating. You don't get so tired from replaying the levels, and in the end the game experience was stretched for me.

So I'm a fan of no save-points in this particular game. :)

First time playing was 2006. Back then i was 8 years. The update that it shuffeled the rooms were not complete then. I just came to the "Dragon" room. And now i'm 13. i just remembered a few things from that time. I was playing this game for 11 consecutive days(Still a little kid). But i came to the point i couldn't see where i was going to click, but then i saw it =P(Grown up(wow... that went fast!)). then i came to the next room, and i was actually pretty fast in clicking. I had never seen those maps before, but i came to the "Fire room", dying only once. i didn't fail once when i was meeting the boss for the first time =). It is the best game i have ever played... almost.
