backstabber

kyhYou have something to say? You say it to my face! Does this phrase scare you? Make you want to run away and not deal with the situation? Well, Dennis Ranke presents you with an alternative in his MiniLD (Ludum Dare's kinder, less stressful little brother) puzzle entry, backstabber. A nameless man with a mission, your only goal is to stab everyone else in the back. However, you're not the only one with a violent streak. Run across their line of sight, and they'll be putting you under that gravestone.

bstabberMove mister antagonist around with the [arrow] keys and take action with [X]. Oh so convenient in a Sokoban-like game, undo your last move with [Z] or use [R] to restart the whole level. With the pixelated look characteristic of PuzzleScript games, Ranke has created an interesting experience in the limited development time allowed him. Between-level text often gives information helpful to complete the increasingly difficult and complex levels, not to mention the little story it ends up telling. Intrigued? Well, challenge yourself and find out what would bring a man to become... a backstabber.

Good game. I would be worth extending it with new levels.

Try propping a door open.

Brilliant little game, it would definitely benefit from more levels!

That was pretty easy, even for a non-Sokoban player like me.

For whatever it's worth, here's a walkthrough. I'm going to split it into the general hints, and then I'm going to write the direction by direction guide using what I think is the least amount of moves. There are probably more efficient move-sets, but oh well. Just in case, I'm abbreviating directions: Up (U), Right (R), Down (D), Left (L), Action (X)

backstabber Walkthrough

Level 1: Without much hesitation, he would press 'X' to give a friendly stab.

General Hints:

This is to introduce you to the game and concept. You MUST stab the guards from the back - even killing them from the side is useless. Guards will automatically run to you (YOU DO NOT GET TO MOVE) when they see you, and will only stop if they touch you or are blocked. They can not walk over holes, but can see you over holes. Basically kill everyone without being killed.

Directions:

RRRR X R DDD L X LL X RRRRRR UUUUU X RR LL DDD RR X LL UUU LLL U LL X LL X [51 moves]

Level 2: When he saw crates, he knew what to do.

General Hints:

Guards can see you behind crates, but they can not push a crate if you are standing behind one, and they can not push 2 crates together. When you move out of the way behind the crate, the guard will move one more square with the crate - make sure you consider this! Move the crates where you start to trick kill the first guard, then when you try to kill the second guard, make sure he doesn't push the crate all the way to the bottom so you can use the crate to kill the third guard.

Directions:

DD RR UU L R DD LL UU R U R D LL U X LL DDD L D L R UU L X RR DDDD LL UUU R U LL R DDD LL RR UUU LL D X [65 moves]

Level 3: Doors! Somewhere there has to be a switch to open/close them. Because that's how modern buildings work.

General Hints:

Obviously, neither you, guards, nor blocks can go through closed doors, and everything can go through open doors, so be careful of opened doors. Your first kill will be the guard on the right. You just need to be beside the switch to flip it with X.

Directions:

RRRR X RR UUUU RR DD LL DD LL X RRR UU R U RR DD LL U L DD LLL X R D U RR D X L D LLLLLL UUUU RR D X [66 moves]

Level 4: Unlike doors back home, these don't crush the inattentive foot. He likes these doors!

General Hints:

The level text pretty much says it all - if there is a block on the door space when the switch is flipped, the door will stay open. Use this advantage to keep certain doors open! Guards can NOT see you behind closed doors. Make sure you do not let the guard push the block all the way to the bottom - you need the block to kill the second guard.

Directions:

D RRRR UU X LLLL UU DD RRRR X DD LLLL UUUUUU L UU R D L D RR L DDDD RR LL UUUU RR DD X UU LL DDDD RRRRRR UU R L DD R X [82 moves]

Level 5:Those guards sure aren't all that strong. Or Intelligent.

General Hint:

In this level, you will be using the fact that guards can not push 2 blocks at the same time, as well as the fact that blocks keep doors open. Be careful not to let guards push blocks to the walls!

Directions:

R DD L U R U LLL D L U R D X U LL D L UUU RR X UU RRR D U LLL DD LL DDD RR UU DD R X L UUUUU RRR DD L X [65 moves]

Level 6:The sentinel bot: Though slow, it is irritatingly invincible.

General Hint:

The red robots move one space whenever you land on any of their cardinal directions of sight. When you move out of their sight, they will move one more spot in the direction they saw you last, and will stop until you land in their sight again. When you first land in their sight, they do not move. If you walk into a wall and the you are in the robot's sight, the robot will move towards you. Unfortunately for you, these robots serve as your blocks for this level. You can NOT land in space next to the robots - that will kill you.

Directions:

DD RRRRR UUUU LL U R X R DDD LLL UU X U RR X R D RR D RR X DDD LL RR UUU LL D LLL UUU RR X [60 moves]

End:

And that's how Mr. Smith became employee of the month.

Interesting ending, but I suppose that is true of the corporate ladder in real life.
