Blocks With Letters On 4

TrickyEditor's Note: Hi folks! This is a new version of the game provided by the developer that should fix all the problems you were encountering, so please try it again!

We all love blocks! We all love letters! And while some crazy people out there might prefer letters with blocks on, here at JayIsGames, we stand assured that Blocks With Letters On is truly the way things were meant to be. Marty Sears' crazy combination of anagrams, block-sliding, hilarious animations, and hair-pulling difficulty has become a favorite amongst many of our readers, and for good reason. But now, the trilogy has become a quadrilogy, with Blocks With Letters On 4! And this time around, the background is green!

Blocks With Letters On 4As before, the goal of each level is to direct the blocks with letters on into the yellow area of the grid, to form the one English word which is the level's answer. Select a block to move by tapping the [spacebar] or by clicking it with the mouse, then use the [arrow] keys to move it. Most blocks with letters on can only be moved left and right, beset by the whims of gravity, though the white blocks with letters on can float up and down. Passing over certain switches can change a block's color. Various other elements will hurt or hinder your progress, but in this iteration, players will also have to battle Vowel-Only squares that will only let A-E-I-O-or-U-Enabled blocks pass through, and also mystery switches. What do they do? Well, uh, it's a mystery. As a small measure of mercy, clues (which will reveal the first letter of the answer word) and hints (which will give you a more specific hint about how to start a puzzle) are available at the bottom of the screen. You only get ten of each to last you through all 30 levels though, so ration them wisely.

There are hard games. There are really hard games. There are Nintendo Hard games. And then, somewhere between "The Third Level of Battletoads" Hard, and "Average British Crossword Puzzle" Hard comes Blocks with Letters On 4. If you're looking for a game that will test every neuron of your linguistic and spatial reasoning, then man, you have found it. Admittedly, the new elements are a little hit and miss. The vowel-only blocks are a cool addition that serve to add a new level of complication to the letter-changer mechanics. However, the mystery switches, while rare, seem a bit of a misstep, since the necessity of experimenting with them means that the player will be required to restart the level at least once. That having been said, fans of the series are sure to pleased with Blocks With Letters On 4, and, let's face it, there are so few games that feature a British guy enunciating things over MSPaint-styled cartoons, that you need to jump on them whenever they come along.

Hooray! Another Blocks With Letters On! :-D

Stuck on level 9. I just can't figure out how to

get the "R" to the 2-switch like the hint says.

Reply

Also, the "Online Help" button does nothing.

Reply

Rygar, some nested hints for level 9:

Use the 'C' block twice, to get the 'R' to the 2-switch.

I hit the switches in the following order: 2, 4, 3, 1.

There's a reason there's a space to the left of the '3' switch.

To get to the enfloatinator thing, go through door 2, not over the gray defloatinator.

Only two blocks go through door 3.

Reply

Parse - I like the word enfloatinator. lol

Oh boy oh boy oh boy! I loved the first three, can't wait to play this one!

Oh, I love this series. So glad to see another entry.

The levels continue to impress. The sokobon-esque mechanical puzzles complement the anagram puzzles perfectly. It all comes together when you're presented with a couple of letter-advancement tiles and clone tiles that, in theory, could grant the player a tremendous number of words to make, but on closer inspection you realize several combinations are impossible and that helps you narrow it down to just one word. In other levels the word is obvious, but serves as a simple clue to how the boxes will have to rest which guides you through the logic of moving them.

The adorable animations between levels keeps a steady stream of "rewards" on hand that make you want to keep playing right on through.

The hints tend to be the right balance between useful and spoilery, so when you cash in one of your tokens you don't feel like the answer was simply given to you.

This game showcases great puzzle design in every level.

Ok, level 27 is befuddling me!
I like the review pointing out that the speaking is by a 'British Guy'. Maybe the US TV shows can take note - we don't sound like Victorian snobs.

Reply

Craft,
For level 27, some nested spoilers:

Consider switch 1. A) How can you hit it? B) What will happen when you hit it? And C) What (else) do you want to happen when you hit it?

A floaty block moves too slow to get through the '1' corridor on the right, and if you block the doors from toggling, you won't be able to get the 'Q' and 'U' out.

So you'll need a grey block sitting on the '1' door on the right when you hit the switch. Now, the puzzle has effectively been reduced to getting a grey block there without hitting any enfloatinators.

I used the 'I' block as the grey block; you could also use the 'C' block.

And I agree, 'Enfloatinator' is a wonderful word. *grin*

The improved game doesn't remember what level was my last, so I have to start over. That sucks.

Reply

Okay, thanks in part to Parse I was able to figure out level 9, but I can't even tell what the word is supposed to be on level 12. I think I've gone as far as I can until someone makes some kind of walkthrough.

Reply

On the original posting, there was a walkthrough with each of the words; I'm a little surprised they didn't repost that comment. In any case, a word list is a quick enough request.

As you can get the first letter by using the 'Clue flap', and I hate outright spoiling things without giving a hint first, I'm making two lists here. One is the first two letters of each word (if the first letter isn't enough); the second is the full word list.

We had a walkthrough ready to go, but there were some concerns about its accuracy, since the developer updated the game since we wrote it. Hopefully it will be available soon!

Reply

Parse - thanks, though I eventually got it after a hint from a friend on another site, while Marty (the developer) sat & laughed at us! lol

I haven't needed any help to work out any of the words in this episode, just a pencil & paper to note the possibilities & figure it out.

I love that moment when you are looking at the puzzle and going "This is completely impossible; he's lost his mind." And then you see the trick. It's better than ice cream.

Reply

Mike - as far as I know Marty hasn't changed any of the levels. He says he's fixed the bugs that were to do with a letter clue & the level select function, not the layouts or solutions.

I want to thank JIG or whoever for allowing this game to save completed levels. I got through level 16 on this site and ran out of hints so started over on another site that seems to specialize in escape games all hours of the day, just to get the hints. I got up to level 28 and then shut the computer down to go to bed. When I started this morning the other site had me back at level 1 but JIG had me at level 16. Phew, that was a relief. Granted, I played most levels 2x, but at least I had the hints for the harder levels.

Reply

Woohoo! Just finished the last level.

The hint in level 30 is a little bit misleading

There should be more letters to the stacked letters of EET

Reply

love these games but I would kill for an undo button, even just a single turn for when I overran and dropped a letter or something.

So I played through before the fix and got to level 28, where I assumed there was a glitch, rendering the level impossible.
So now I've played all the way back to level 28 again and nothing is different. And I'm at a complete loss as to how this level is possible to solve.
Can anyone tell me what the trick is?

Reply
zoyciteyouma July 15, 2013 10:59 PM

Okay, I just figured it out.

If anyone else needs help on this

there is a way to keep the 1 blocks from changing when triggered.

Reply

Gah! I was on level 30 and it forgot my progress! So frustrating!

Reply

Stuck on 23! Halp!

Reply

Ruth - level 23 - you need to create 2 columns of 3 blocks using the floating block to help you. Try to get it so letters that come earlier in the word are in the left column. The right column should stand 1 place to the left of the green 1 gate & the other column 2 places left of that. Then the last letter can get to switch 1.

Reply

This version was as interesting as the previous ones. Great job! The puzzles were as hard and I needed hints for many levels.

I think I found one glitch: after solving the last level and listening to the great song, return to the game, open the menu, choose Animations, and choose the last animation (for level 30). Then the song starts over, but the whole Flash window is dark. (I am using Firefox 22 on Windows with Flash 11.8.800.94.)

And one wish: Please save not only the progress, but also the clue flaps and the hints I opened. It is a little sad that I had to spend one more hint to see the same hint I saw yesterday because I did not save the screenshot of the hint.

@Tricky: Mystery switches are not new. They also existed in More Blocks With Letters On and Blocks With Letters On 3 (check their reviews and walkthroughs on JIG). Vowel-only squares are new as far as I remember.

@H2G: I agree that it is a little misleading, and I was indeed misled by it, but I think it is part of the challenge. The screenshots in the hint are correct, and what you pointed out is that you

have to still think carefully *after* the final screenshot

in the hint. I appreciate the author did not spoil every challenge even after giving the hint.

I apologise for not using the spoiler tag in my previous comment. I had posted before I realised. Sorry folks, I'll remember in future.

@zoyciteyouma, for level 27, even with your hint, how do you

un-rotate the G so that it's right side up to finish the word?

Reply
Bd Belle July 22, 2013 9:11 PM

Never mind, got it! You just have to

go back through the bottom row, making sure not to press the 1 switch, and hiding the G between the spaced blocks while you move the rest of the letters in a way that you can get the G back up and around again.

Ooh, Blocks With Letters On 4 has brand new tutorial levels. May be easy, but I did it for the animations!

I can't work out how

to get the grey block to the top

of level 27 :(

Found an alternate solution to 30 - with the same answer - that doesn't trigger the animation :(. I looked at the hint after and it's clearly a different approach:

I cloned the E twice (instead of once for E and once for O as the hint implies), then (eventually) brought two of the three E's and the O into the letter shifting room. Dropped the O and an E down, creating space to shift the remaining E to a P, then took the O and P through the orange teleporter. "COMLET" allowed the last E to trigger #3, and then flew P in to COMPLETE.

Great game, as always! Hopefully being this late to the party means a shorter wait for BWLO:V
