JayBon VoyageThe famous Gotmail team of Japan has just released another point-and-click, room escape game, and this one is titled: Bon Voyage.

If you've played other games from the Gotmail team, then this one may seem familiar to you, but it really is a new game. It may appear familiar at first glance because Bon Voyage uses the same art assets and setting as Gotmail's previous game, Strawberry Tomato. In fact, some remnants of the previous game — such as the small pictures on the wall that contained clues from the previous game — are still there, but they don't respond to mouse clicks.

Use the usual point-and-click skills to locate clues and find items to help you escape. Some pixel hunting will likely be necessary as well. Fortunately, the game includes an integrated save mechanism and a music mute button. Go forth and conquer, and leave some helpful hints, tips and a walkthrough here in the comments if you can. And if someone can come up with a better review, I'll edit what I have here to include that, too.

Play Bon Voyage

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

I just finished playing through this! Great game! I was escaper #3674!

I wrote up a walkthrough for it, I hope it helps you guys, it can be a bit tricky!

  1. When you start the game, look under table to the right, get PLUG ADAPTER

  2. Go to the cabinet to your right, look at very bottom of the right-hand cabinet, click on back and retrieve the BEETLE from off the handle. Look at beetle, notice it is a USB. Put beetle back on the handle and a door opens behind a pot on the other side of the room.

  3. Look in the tall cabinets to the right, in the left one you will find an EXTENSION CORD.

  4. Go left a few times until you face the wall with the jackets hanging. Zoom into the pot. Grab the BLACK LIGHT from in the pot. Open the panel behind the pot, click the back of it, get the CELL PHONE.

  5. Zoom out and click on the lamp on the shelf. Take the LIGHT BULB.

  6. Go left again so you see double blue doors. Click on them so that they open. Look behind the edge of the door to the right to get a BATTERY CONTAINER.

  7. Go right a bit until you see the stone by the lone blue door. Look behind it and find a light plug attached. Insert the light bulb, it Should make the stone glow. Look above the stone at where it shines to read a message, take note of both the word and the letter.

  8. (TRAVEL + random letter)

  9. Look at nearby empty table. Place cell phone on the table. Zoom into the small man and take note of where he steps.

  10. (.JP)

  11. Go left a few times until you see the pot in the table with the yellow tablecloth. Click on the small window up near the top. Keep jarring it open and closed until something falls off the window sill. Move to the right hand side of the table and push the chair in. Pick up the SCREW DRIVER. (Note- You CANNOT get the screw driver until you get the battery first!)

  12. While you are down there, pull the chair out again and put the adapter in to the socket. If it doesn't fit zoom into it and rotate it the right way. Plug in the extension cord.

  13. Zoom in on the view of the battery case. Use the screwdriver on it to get a CAMERA.

  14. Go right. Use the screwdriver on the right hand handle of the double doors.

  15. Turn to face the Large bay-window with the light house. Zoom in so you are looking out at the light house and take a picture of it. Take another picture so that you have two.

  16. Look at the pictures and note the letter, this goes with the other letter from the glowing stone, for later. The numbers are a code.

  17. Go left a couple of times and face the painting. Click on the bottom corner to access a code panel. Enter the number you photographed. When it unlocks, drag the painting to the left to reveal a colored triangle and pentagon.

  18. Use the Screwdriver on one of the round stones near the painting, it moves around each game.

  19. Go right. Use the screwdriver to very precisely pick the lock of the lone blue door. But the blue closet door is not locked. It's just STUCK. Bang on it a few times and it will eventually open. (thanks charmander!)

  20. As you walk in, shine your cell phone on the wall to see some symbols you can click on. Take note, you will use these later.

  21. Look on the right side of the alter and insert the fossil to stop the water. Pick up the fossil again.

  22. Look on the left side of the alter now and there should be two holes. Put the door handle in these.

  23. Leave the room and go over to the double blue doors. Look out the window. Note the sequence of the flashing colored lights.

  24. Go over to the cabinets and open the one with the drinks. Toward the back you should see a panel with corresponding colors to the ones you saw outside. Click them in the order you saw them blinking. Click the bottom of the cabinet to open a panel and retrieve some UV PAINT.

  25. Go to the pot you got the black light from and pour the UV paint into it. It should inform you it has leaked out.

  26. Turn to the cabinets and move the lamp on the shelf. Click the switch to turn off the lights.

  27. Turn to the wall with the jackets and look at the floor. Turn on the UV light in your inventory and look at the floor. Note the symbols and their locations in the pentagon.

  28. Go to the painting and work out the order of the symbols according to pentagon chart and the flashing lights code.

  29. Enter the lone blue door and shine your cell phone on the wall to click the symbols in the right order.

  30. Go down the ladder in the alter. You will find a letter grid. Insert the fossil into the slot. Then use the two letters you found from the glowing stone and from the picture. Use them as coordinates to find the right button.

  31. Look in one of the pedestals to retrieve the LAPTOP (there is more than one pedestal, and the position is randomized each time you play).

  32. Go back upstairs and retrieve the Beetle USB from the cabinet.

  33. Go around to the left hand side of the yellow table. Plug in the lap top. Plug the USB beetle into the laptop (make sure the USB is exposed, not closed into a beetle!)

  34. Look at the laptop. Click on the red beetle icon. Use the highlighted squares and the letter grid that pops up to find out the word it spells

  35. GOTMAIL

  36. Zoom out of the screen and take back the beetle. It will say it is charged up.

  37. Move the pot by the table and you will find a mouse hole. Put the beetle into the hole (Make sure it is a beetle not an exposed USB). Back out of the screen and zoom back in. The beetle has a gift for you! Take the DRAWER KEY.

  38. Go to the left hand cabinet. Open the doors with the movable cups in them. Click on the right hand drawer with the key. You must use the key directly on the lock to open it.

  39. Open the drawer and you will be able to enter a code. Use the three parts you found to enter the website address

  40. (travel.gotmail.jp)

  41. Click the red button to enter it. At the bottom of the page is a word in English

  42. crete

  43. Go down to the basement and enter the code you found into the pedestal panel to the left.

  44. You are out! What adventures await you in the city? We will find out!

We don't play the "first!" game here.

But since Graeme and Jennifer are off on their honeymoon to Hawaii leaving all the Lazylacers without their daily "first!" fix, we'll allow it just this once. ;)

And for other Lazylaces fans, here are a few shots from the wedding:

I had a great time, and so pleased I made the trip down there for the wedding.

Such nice family and friends they have, and the wedding itself was wonderful and took place inside a gorgeous mansion. It was all very lovely. :D

Hello all

I have the plug adapter, beetle (used), lightbulb (used), blacklight, cell phone, and surgebar. I lit up the ball and found the clue. But now I am stuck. I found the colour code keypad and the numberpad, but no idea how to use either of them. The blacklight doesn't seem to light up anything even when I a turn off the room lights.

so any suggestions are welcome.

Richard,
Where is the beetle and cell phone? I also found a battery looking cannister

you should find the screwdriver...

possible somethings to do with a window

i'm stuck now in the basement bit, switched off the water but no idea what to do now

thanks for the hint about the battery. I looked behind the wrong door earlier.

for the beetle, look in the bottom cupboard...

Goober,

thanks I got the screwdriver. But that kind of annoys me. I opened and closed the window many times, just not rapidly. I don't like tricks like that.

Regarding the battery:

It's not a battery. Combining other objects with it is supposed to show you how large the thing really is. You can open it using the screwdriver.

Reply

Has anybody figured out what the code on the wall of the basement room is for?

Reply

where is the screwdriver?

Reply

AHA! got the code for the picture and found a neat coded diagram, but it doesn't make sense to me yet.

Reply

I have in my inventory:
Outlet, beetle, lightbulb, flashlight, battery barrel, screwdriver, camera, fossil, extension cord, photos

The lightbulb can be screwed into the socket behind the sphere next to the door which then illuminated the sphere

Outlet gets plugged into the wall behind the table with the yellow runner, the two round prongs should be facing away from you when zoomed in.

The extension cord plugs into the outlet

You can open the battery barrel with the screwdriver to get the camera

Take 2 photos of the lighthouse outside the big window where you start, click it when the light beam passes by

2nd photo gives you the 5 digit code

74545

That is where I am now. Any suggestions as to what to do when the lights are off, I'd assume use the flashlight but there is almost nothing to click on.

found out what the cameras for

you take photo's of the llight house

but what the painting means is anyones guess

something to do with the colours?

use the camera and take pictures of the lighthouse (from the window) twice, u will get the code and a hint ;)

Thanks to Hyperkinetic for the walkthrough but I think a step needs to be added

You must turn off the lights in the final room (on the ceiling) then use your blacklight to find an arrow that indicates which platform to enter your code into

Okay, so...

I plugged the USB beetle into the laptop, but the laptop will not open... I've click so many times and started a new game. I'm probably just clicking in all the wrong places, but my fingers are tired.

haha, I feel so stupid =P

Reply

Richard: Frustration at not knowing what to do next.

Reply

urgh... i can't find the stupid laptop...

i've tried looking into the pedestal but i can't find anything

Reply

Okay. I walked up to the pedestal, but where is the laptop? Instead of a laptop, there is a compartment that requires a code. What is the code? Where is the laptop?

Reply

I am having trouble getting the black light from the pot. Is there a sweet spot I am not clicking on? Any tips?

Reply

There is more than one pedestal, laptop seekers! The walkthrough (thank heaven there is one!) is a little inaccurate on that point, the laptop moves game to game.

I LOVE these GotMail games, they are beautiful and surreal, BUT they get a little out there. Lokking at the battery with the light doesn't seem that farfetched to me, the things you have to do to get clues can make WAY less sense that that!

Reply

The laptop can be any of the compartments.

don't forget to plug it in....

Reply

A problem with the walkthrough? (regarding the laptop)

Step 31 says:
"Look in the pedestal directly as you enter the room to retrieve the LAPTOP."
The laptop was in the pedestal on the right in my game. Is the position random?
*

Weird (possibly dumb) problem (regarding final code):

I didn't see the exit word after typing in the address. All I saw was "OK!". What did I miss?
*

Regarding comment by Anonymous at 4:01:

In my game, the exit was on the left. While there was a mark on that side under blacklight, it was not obviously an arrow.

Reply

Ah! Thanks for catching the things I didn't know were changing elements when I did the walkthrough!

Plover- for the code

You have to look on the web site itself, it won't display in the game.

Reply

Thanks for the walkthrough! With a (little) help I was # 8803 to escape.

Allison: I've had the same problem. You can reach it from the other side. When you move the chair nearest to the window, the screw driver will move on the ground, under the chair, from where you can pick it.

Reply

Great game!!!

Reply

I think I just don't have enough patience for these games. I thought it was really cool, except I couldn't figure anything out. I had a lot of trouble even finding the right places to click on cabinets to get the initial items. The codes and machines were fun though.

In case anybody was curious,

when you enter the website in the drawer at the end to get the final code, the Japanese word at the bottom of the page preceding the code word "crete" simply reads "Password" in katakana (the phonetic alphabet generally used by Japanese speakers to write English words.)

Reply

I'm also having trouble with the blacklight

in the pot.

I got the regular light first, would that make a difference?

Reply

It says I need Windows Vista to play the game? Bullsquid.

Reply

Is there a lot of pixel hunting in this one? I made my own first pass through the entire room, found a few items, and started the walkthrough (not a lot of time to "do it myself"--as if I could with these that are not intuitive). Now I can't do anything to get to the back of the cabinet as discussed in #2 of the walkthrough. Is the whole game like that? FRUSTRATING! Well, gotta get to school.

Reply

What a novel idea: not escaping a place, but returning to an already escaped-from room to discover the secret story behind it. These kinds of games are fine until you have to do something you don't know you're supposed to do even as you're doing it, with the screwdriver example.

Fortunately, playing the last game will alert people to the *a-herm* problem of the door. I'm also glad they re-worded the message, to avoid sending everyone down the wrong idea. It's an improvement, but I'd still rather examine every object and use them on every other object than frantically click every object everywhere on every screen. Sad to say, that's what I'm doing right now.

Reply

I've tried using the adapter everyway possible. It does NOT work. I've zoomed in and switched it around all possible angles. I repeat it does not work.

Reply

I've tried using the adapter everyway possible. It does NOT work. I've zoomed in and switched it around all possible angles. I repeat it does not work.

Are you sure you using the adapter at the right outlet?
You get the adapter at the start under the blue table but you plug it in under the table with the yellow table cloth on the right side. the 2 prongs should be facing towards the wall.

Reply

So, in putting random items together to see what happens, I get a message that says

What is That? Spank me!!!

If that was intentional, I'm not sure I want to continue this game...

huh. i finished the game, and according to the walkthrough,

at the end, I'm supposed to put "crete" into the pedestal on the left, but i put it into the middle one, and got an ending where

a door opens, the person goes through, and swims? i guess? out into the ocean, which is really smart, saying how he/she needs to go to the city first...

so i don't know if everyone got the same ending as i did, or if there's actually three endings, one for each pedestal, but it might be something worth exploring... just something i thought of... oh and i'm number 14448 person and it took me 00:46:37 to complete

How Do You Type In The Password In Drawer? Am i doing Something wrong, or are the words randomized, just like the pedastals?

I'm stuck on hint number 23, where are the flashing lights? And what is the combination?

what is a BEETLE and where is it??? How do I open the door with the cell phone in it!?

Why can't I plug the beetle into the laptop? I'm completely lost. Was I supposed to do it BEFORE I plugged in the laptop to the outlet? If so, then I'm not restarting the whole game. I've clicked everywhere but when I click directly on the laptop, it goes to the screen where it says "strawberry tomato". Clicking on "menu" does nothing.

OK I got the beetle and the cell phone. But I can't figure out what order to click the symbols on the wall in the lone blue door room ... help please?

Did this happen to anyone else? I tried to

combine the battery-looking thing with the phone,

and text started scrolling across the screen, saying such things as: "LOL LOL LOL LOL" and "Holy sweet Jesus" and "Spank me" and "What is that?" and "It's crazy big!"

So weird. I guess it's some kind of easter egg?

Reply

Please help. Step 11 in the walkthru says I need the battery case before I can get the screwdriver. I have it, but it keeps telling me I can't reacjh it.

Reply

Nevermind on the screwdriver. That was kind of dumb that the chair has to be in a specific position. Very illogical.

Reply

I really dislike this game. Even with the walkthru I have had so many pixel pointing problems and access to items is really dumb (IE open cabinets in order to open drawers when drawers are clear from other angles, move chair twice to get screwdriver.)

Reply

I am INFURIATED with this game! GotMail is usually a little pixel-hunty, a little bizarre, but still within boundaries of playable. This one is NOT. Obscure pixel hunting and missions, and to top it off, I've gotten into the basement of the well thing, with my blacklight, and can "find" only two pedestals. I have literally clicked many pixels up and down in a fine sweeping motion, combing for the hotspot to "reveal" to me the laptop in this hard to see scene. No luck--however, the far left screen DOES have a jutting door blocking my view of the probable third pedestal where the laptop surely must be. I'm not amused, and I'm done.

Oh God, there's a darn switch??? **sigh** nevermind

Disappointing effort by the Gotmail team. I previously resisted playing the Gotmail games because I had read that they tended to stretch the bounds of logic, but having played everything else and itching for more, I finally decided to give the games a fair shot. I started with The Daydream and Job Pico and was pleasantly surprised, and eagerly moved onto Bon Voyage.

Unfortunately, my happiness ended there. This is one of the most illogical escape games I have played to date. I was driven to a walkthrough early on, and after the fourth "peek" at the answers, I realized I was never going to solve this on my own. Most times, a peek at the walkthrough leaves you slapping your forehead, wondering why you didn't think of that,m setting you off in the right direction for a little while. Not so in Bon Voyage. It was more a case of "How on earth was I supposed to think of that?", and chances are, you'll just have to look at the next clue, too. Plagued with annoying "click fifteen times before something happens" puzzles, woefully illogical cause-and-effect reactions, and bizarre choices made this game an exercise in frustration.

Still eager for some escapist fun, I'll probably give the rest of the Gotmail games a shot, but I can only hope that they didn't set the precedent for Bon Voyage's style of gameplay.

stuck in the room with the blue dot's on the wall. can't fight the laptop there =(

Reply

I've been looking out the windows of the double doors for 20 minutes - I see no blinking, colored lights! There are 6 stars visible, but they're not blinking. I can't get any closer than a semi-long view, so if I'm supposed to be looking from a different angle, I'm screwed. Any thoughts? Or can someone just give me the code?

RE: #23 of Walkthrough

Okay of course as soon as I wrote that I couldn't see the flashing colored lights I figured out a way to see them - but they have nothing to do with the blue, double doors that I can see.

Here's what I did:

Go over to the space behind the chair to the left of the table with the yellow table cloth and click on the window. It will take you outside to a roof top and if you look to the left there is a tower with blinking, colored lights.

I can't seem to do #18. I'm under the painting, the screwdriver is selected, and I'm clicking all over those two stones. Nothing's happening, though. Am I doing it wrong, or did I just not understand the instructions?

Reply

Hi, I found things ok. But I can't figure out how to zoom and rotate the objects I found. Eg, plug. I was able to put the phone on the table, but not the other stuff.
And that might be the stupidest ? asked, but what can I say. :-)

Reply

Stupidest question...
Usually escape games have an "about item" feature. I don't see one with this.
How do I combine or rotate my items?

Reply

HELP! I can't find the BEETLE??

Reply

This is a pretty fun game, but as of writing I have not yet escaped from the room. I like this game, as nonsensical as it may seem; I may feel that way, however, as I like weird things that make no sense.

However, regarding the walkthrough...

Step twenty-eight is rather vague, but here's the trick: the symbols on the wall of the cellar also correspond to the sequence of the flashing lights. For mine, the sequence went like this: yellow (circle), blue (star), white (triangle), green (X), and red (square). You can't do anything to the pentagon in the painting, but it's supposed to give you a clue as to how to solve the riddle presented on the cellar wall. (Of course, they did a poor job of that, since the connection between the shapes on the wall and the pentagon's colors was difficult to figure out.)
Also, step thirty-three says to go to the left side and plug in the laptop; however, you must crawl underneath the right side of the table and plug in the extension cord before it's possible to plug in the laptop.

I enjoy this game, although I must say that it's only solvable if you either have the walkthrough on hand or simply have a real knack for room escape games. (I don't.)

Reply

Two other things that I spotted about the walkthrough...

For step forty-three, it says to enter the password (crete) into the left pedestal of the underground chamber under the cellar; however, I've noticed that the only pedestal that will "accept" the password and open the door is the same one in which you found the laptop. For me, it was the right pedestal, but for other people it may be the left or middle ones. Just wanted to point that out.
And last but not least, for step three, it says to look in the "tall cabinets"; however, I had had trouble with that since there are two "tall cabinets" in the room--the one with the drawers and movable cups, the one that the beetle was found in; and the one with the poles suspended horizontally inside, like a closet. To clarify, the extension cord is found in the closet-like cabinet.

Ah, I've escaped. This is an interesting game; however, Santorini and Crete aren't part of Italy, they're Grecian islands! Why the dialogue says "Ciao" at the end is beyond me...(Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't "ciao" Italian for "hello" and "goodbye"?)

Reply

step 28 remeber the colors from the tower outside combine (something like that) it with the colors in the triangle en the figures on the ground in that order you click the symbols

I am having trouble at number 11 on the walkthrough. What battery? Where is it?? Please help!

I have code from using black light, and I'm trying to use in painting. But nothing's working. I have clicked everywhere. Which code should I be using? From colored lighting, from the black wall or symbols in the floor? But I tried all three and nothing's going on.

Reply

ok, wow, definite bug in the game. I had to reload it TWO friggin' times to find the blacklight after i had almost finished the first time playing, cuz the blacklight wasn't in the pots.

Reply

I didn't like this game from Gotmail for the first time EVER. It made no sense and any game that you CAN'T get through without a walkthrough is lacking, imo. To be teased with thinking you can get the next bit on your own only to have to come back and look at the next cheat and the next cheat and the next cheat to THEN realize you might as well just follow the cheats to the end is really kinda a sad spot to be in. It just makes you frustrated with the game and with the people who designed it because it just doesn't follow ANY kind of logic. Maybe that's their aim - but it won't work. Just like people are taught logic, they have to be taught unlogic in order for them to think this far outside the box. Ah well, we'll keep trying I guess.

#87,440. And I'm out. FINALLY. And still not happy about it. It's a hollow victory. It's like getting a medal for a race that someone else ran for you. That Sucks.

Reply

My observation for step 43 in the walkthrough:

After entering the coordinates, look up and click the switch to turn the lights off inside the tomb. Use your black light to survey the room and you'll find a triangle pointing to one of the pedestals. Might it be referring to the correct one to enter the password "crete"?

Wow this one was hard - even with using cheats. Could have used more logic.

Reply

Gah, I agree. I don't like such obtuse puzzles... So far, "Vision" is my favorite for being completely logical and virtually free of pixal hunts. Neutral has the best room escapes.

This is a very dumb basic question. How do I move the objects that I have collected over to where they need to go...i,e., placing the lightbulg into the socket by one of the balls. Somehow, nothing is moving for me. I can click on to the objects, but I can't move them where they need to go. Thank you! I must be doing something very wrong, as this is so basic.....

Got as far as ready to unlock the right drawer but no lock was visible on the screen and every time I tried clicking anywhere near the drawer it would goback to the previous screen.
Also, my game shut down at one point wihtou saving and when I returned to it and hit continue my inventory was filled with everything!
Few glitches. The prequel to this game was more frustrating and I never completed it, even with the walkthrough. Same can be said for this one. Bon Voyage...

Chicktionary, about the drawer:

You need to go into the cabinets above the drawers, zoom in on the bowls there, and then you can get at the drawers. Select the key and click on the round handle of the drawer to open it.

I had trouble with that too. Navigation's a little tricky in this game.

In case anyone still wants help with that safe behind the clay pot:

Remember that cabinet you got the beetle from? Put the beetle back on that little hook thing, and that will open the safe. (You have to leave the beetle hanging there to get into the safe.)
