It's the winter of 1972. In Rusty Lake's latest instalment of the disturbing Cube Escape series, the protagonist rows across the lake to a strange cave full of weird and wonderful goodies, including a dog (how long has it been in there?) and an unfortunate diver who needs your help.
Fans of the series will recognise Rusty Lake's signature surrealist style and weird creepiness in this latest game. After entering the cave, use the mouse to explore your surroundings and collect items to help you escape. The puzzles are a mix of utilising items and mini-game style puzzles, which keeps things interesting. There are a few gruesome moments, so be prepared for that if you are a little squeamish.
There's no changing cursor, so make sure you click everywhere and examine everything carefully. I found this episode to be more logical than previous ones; experienced Cube Escapers will probably have little trouble getting through the first half of this game. If you do get stuck on a particular puzzle, clicking the ? button in the top right hand corner will allow you to watch an ad in exchange for a hint.
This is a satisfying addition to the Cube Escape series, and gives us a number of clues to expand on the previous games. It is quite long, with two distinct sections full of puzzles and challenges. Sharp-eyed players will notice several references to scenes we've seen before in the series, which is a nice reward for long-time fans of the series. If you haven't played the previous instalments, you will enjoy this game much more if you do that first.
Cube Escape - The Cave (Android, Android Tablet)
Hmm, Chrome keeps crashing on the game page for me. Anyone else having this issue? Fortunately, hopping over to FireFox seems to allow it to load properly.
Played this on my iPad this week. Really well done and fun.
can't wait for the walkthrough :)
Dang, I wish my submarine had a dedicated Crab Dispenser.
That said I feel like this answered a lot of questions from the series, maybe building to something big?
For the spider web
First click on the line going from the spider to the centre.
After the spider moves, click on the new line from the spider to the center. Continue until the spider moves all the way around.
(I had to use the video walkthrough for this, and got a bit frustrated because I was only paying attention to the spokes that the video was pressing, but the video spider went the other direction from mine, so my second click was wrong.)
3rd and 4th spider puzzles
Aughghg. There's more than one spider puzzle! I got the second one easily by myself, but I don't remember how. Then I gave up on the third one and went back to the video. Maybe there's some clue that I'm not seeing that would help to solve these.
The third one, that looks like an oblong box
1. The line to the right of the spider
2. The line from the lower bug to the center of its wheel
3. The line from the upper bug to the center of its wheel
4. The line to the left of the lower bug
5. The line to the right of the upper bug
6. The line going up from the lower bug
The fourth one, that's a wheel with a couple of extra triangles sticking out
1. The line to the left of the upper bug
2. The line going up and left from the lower bug
3. The line going down and left from the lower bug
4. The line going right from where the spider landed (the left spoke of the wheel)
5. The line going right from where the spider landed (the top border of the wheel)
6. The line going up and right from the lower bug
7. The line going right from the lower bug
8. The line going down and left from the upper bug
The fifth one ...
Sorry, I am out of patience. I was hoping there wouldn't be any more of these annoying spider puzzles, but there's yet another one. This one is way too hard to describe, even if I could get it myself. I have tried five times riding the pause button on the video one click at a time, and I keep getting something wrong. I'm giving up on this game ...
no walkthrough huh?
Wow. Very creepy. Solved.
About to give up. Bacteria. Can't figure out the objective. Video walkthrough is useless. Goes to ads to often to follow. Please add a "skip" option for these sorts of puzzles.
I officially give up.
Don't give up! Where are you stuck?
ahh.... very cool. for awhile i got stuck on the
last area of the submarine -- i didn't think to take the cubes back out of the navigation machine
but i got it in the end! this installment really began to shed some light on the mystery surrounding the lake! i'm excited to learn even more next game...
as always, cube escape has a good balance of puzzles, story, horror, and intrigue ;>
Amazing game that keeps you entertained. These puzzles of The Cave are well-connected, making it valuable to play. But, what makes the Cube Escape series so great is the menacing atmosphere that is repeatedly existing. :)
Good addition. Thanks.
