Cut!

elleSometimes you really have to carve into a thing to reach its essence, to see the hidden meanings just below the surface, to open up answers ready for the taking. This is even more true in Yonashi's whimsy-doused escape game, Cut!. Everything you need to open the cupboards and get the exit key is near at hand, as long as you have the correct tool and know just how to cut out the distracting excess. You begin the game with nothing at all, though, and you may feel at a loss for how to solve the wall of puzzles in front of you. So you must explore the room, following a changing cursor to zoom in on interactive areas, clicking the grey bars at the sides and bottom of the screen to navigate, until you find something to help you get started. Then, though, your next task is figuring out how to use that one inventory item to help you acquire others. As you investigate everything in sight and put together clues, you'll be able to decipher more codes and make more progress toward your eventual escape.

Of course, the satisfaction of unraveling a riddle and cracking some codes is only part of the enjoyment in Cut!. Topping it all off is a winking playfulness and lots of fun visuals to keep the experience a happy one. Once again Yonashi shows a flair for making nearly wordless yet highly expressive escape games. This heavy reliance on inference may prove frustrating at times as you're stretched to make the connections between the images you're shown and how they relate to the solutions you need. Yet the logic remains as solid as ever. Being a little less cutesy, the design of Cut! is a bit more akin to No Name Room than to Sea Room, yet everything you appreciate about Yonashi's style is well presented here—just enough challenge to draw you in and occupy your brain for 15 minutes yet light enough to paste a smile on your face and keep it there the entire time.

Cut! Walkthrough

Looking Around

First, you see a locked door, and a yellow box on a chair.

To your right, there's a cute fluffy sheep (and the yellow box again).

Behind you, there's an overgrown plant and a window with a yellow curtain. Pulling the curtain closed, it has a bunch of partial numbers on it in orange.

To your left, there are 7 colorful cabinets (6 locked with a puzzle), and a ridiculously tall chair. On the chair, out of reach, is a pair of blue jeans.

One More Thing...

At the bottom of your view, you can see the edge of a table. Turning around the table, there are: a watermelon, a cantelope, a kiwi, and an apple; four avocadoes and four citrus fruits; a margherita pizza; a pastry roll with the word "CALORY".

The Puzzles

The Purple Cabinet

All the cabinets are locked, except the purple one. Open it and take the knife.

The Green Cabinet

The green cabinet puzzle shows the numbers 2 4 3 6, each above a circle with an inner an outer section. Clicking on a section changes its color.

The numbers and circles refer to the four cut-up fruits (the watermelon, et al.).

2 = watermelon = dark green outside, red inside
4 = cantelope = light green outside, yellow inside
3 = kiwi = brown outside, light green inside
6 = apple = red outside, white inside

Open the green cabinet and take the pizza cutter.

The Yellow Cabinet

The yellow cabinet puzzle shows four green ovoids with an arrow pointing to the left, and two yellow buttons. The left button has a concave shape, and the right button a convex shape.

This puzzle refers to the four cut-open avocados.

There are eight avocado halves, each one with or without a pit.

From right to left: convex, concave, concave, convex, concave, convex, convex, concave.
Or, by button position: R L L R L R R L.

Open the yellow cabinet and take the hack saw.

The White Cabinet

The white cabinet puzzle shows eight wedge shapes, one with a black triangle above it. Clicking on a wedge changes its color.

This puzzle refers to the four cut-open citrus fruits.

Each citrus fruit has one colored section, and a black triangle pointing at another section.

Counting clockwise from the black triangle, note the position and color of the colored section for each fruit.

1: Orange
3: Yellow
5: Green
8: Pink
The remaining wedges remain white.

Open the White Cabinet and take the scissors.

The Yellow Box

The yellow box has two orange semi-oval buttons, one pointing down, one pointing up.

The buttons correspond to the cut off yellow curtain.

The truncated orange numbers have six ends pointing up or down in the middle of the curtain.

Up down down up down up.

Open the yellow box and take the shears.

The Blue Cabinet

The blue cabinet puzzle contains a split O pointing to a circle, and a split D pointing to an X. Below are six buttons showing the letter A. Clicking a button cycles through the alphabet... No, it cycles through A B C circle x!

This puzzle refers to the letters on the cut up pastry roll.

Looking at the puzzle, the split O is symmetrical; the split D is not.

For each letter in "CALORY" choose circle or x depending on its symmetry.

In the word "CALORY", the A, O, and Y are symmetrical:
x circle x circle x circle

Open the blue cabinet and take the hedge clippers.

The Pink Cabinet

The pink cabinet puzzle shows a large circle containing a picture of a leaf and three squares of different sizes. Clicking on a square changes the number in the square.

This puzzle refers to the cut up pizza.

The pizza has been cut into three pieces of different sizes. Count the basil leaves in each piece.

Large: 4
Medium: 1
Small: 2

Open the pink cabinet and take the bolt cutters.

The Orange Cabinet

The orange cabinet has three circles, white green and black, and four buttons with digits. Clicking a button changes the digit on it.

This puzzle refers to the three groups of symbols found by cutting the blue jeans, shearing the sheep, and trimming the plant.

Put the symbols in the correct order to get a mathemetical expression.

The order is indicated by the colored circles:
White = sheep = "(25"
Green = plant = "+31)"
Black = note = "x30"

(25+31)x30 = 1680.

Open the orange cabinet, revealing a blue key on a chain.

The Door

Use the blue key to unlock the door and escape!

The Items

The Knife

The Knife is in the purple cabinet.

Use the knife to cut all the fruits and the pastry roll.

The Pizza Cutter

The pizza cutter is in the green cabinet.

Use the pizza cutter to cut the pizza, naturally.

The Hack Saw

The hack saw is in the yellow cabinet.

Use the hack saw to cut the legs off the chair, allowing you to examine the blue jeans.

The Scissors

The scissors are in the white cabinet.

Use the scissors to cut the blue jeans (after cutting the legs of the chair) and the yellow curtain.

Cutting the blue jeans reveals two halves of a note, containing the symbols "x30".

The Shears

The shears are in the yellow box.

Use the shears to shear the sheep, revealing the symbols "(25".

The Hedge Clippers

The hedge cluppers are in the blue cabinet.

Use the hedge clippers to trim the overgrown plant, revealing the symbols "+31)".

The Bolt Cutters

The bolt cutters are in the pink cabinet.

Use the bolt cutters to cut the chain. Take the blue key.

The Blue Key

The blue key is in the pink cabinet.

You know what to do!

Fun game. A few new ideas in it.

I'm stuck on the grey (white?) door puzzle with the black triangle and 8 upside down teardrops on it...

I'm fairly certain the clue is the 4 sliced open fruits on the table below the avacados. From left to right they appear to be a yellow lemon with a yellow teardrop inside, green lime with a green teardrop inside, an orange with an orange teardrop inside, and s yellow grapefruit? with a pink teardrop inside. I see the black triangle on each piece of fruit but I'm not making any connections with the puzzle. Hints please!

Reply

Mark0205:

The fruit part is right.

Two things:

1)

Note that each fruit has a little notch or triangle pointing to one of the segments/teardrop-shaped things.

2)

Note the colours of the pips and how many segments clockwise from the notch those segments are.

If that didn't help:

The yellow segment is two clockwise from the notch, the green one is four, the orange one is one, and the pink segment is seven spaces clockwise from the notch. The puzzle has the notch pointing to the first segment, so that one is white, the second right of the notched segment is yellow, the fourth right of the notched one is green, the first segment right of the notch is orange, and the seventh one right of the notch is pink. Or, left to right: white orange yellow white green white white pink.

Reply

I'm stuck on the six-letter/symbol puzzle.

I assume it has to do with the "calory" cake log, which I've cut into segments. I've tried permutations with the cream topping — where it's cut being the X and where it's not being the O, and etc., and putting in the CA for the first two. I'm missing something fundamental, though. I'm guessing it's very easily and I'm overlooking it.

Okay, I'm a little confused.

I have trimmed the bush and cut down part of the curtain, and I THINK I have "179" and "+311" but the bush is kind of hard to read. And it's still not a 4-digit code, even if my read is correct.

VoxPopuli42 July 18, 2014 1:15 PM

I now also have the hint from the tall chair. But I still can't seem to get a correct code

@elle I have all three clues now, and I still can't tell

the bush numbers

are supposed to be

I figured out the 4-digit code at long last...

I didn't realize the numbers on the curtain were a red herring... I need to shear the lamb first

Elle,

I had been doing that. I just don't see anything that a sliced circle and a rectangle plus a half-circle equal on the cake. I tried equating those to Xs and Os using the cream and pairs of cake slices, plus throwing in the CA where I could. I tried reading the cake from right to left, even. No go. I'm afraid you'll need to be more explicit, as I'm still missing it.

Thanks for the walkthrough, chipmunk! The only thing that I was stuck on was the yellow box. Not at all obvious! A fun game, though.

Arrrgh! Thanks for the walkthrough, chipmunk. I was stuck on that blue box and didn't think of the symbols that way. Thanks again!

ARGH, could not figure out that

both the inner and outer circles of the green box puzzle changed colors.

Feel dumb now.

So far I'm angry at this game because the puzzles are not clear.

Which direction do you count to get the colored seeds code? Do you count the one under the arrow? Which color do you use.

And, the cut fruits puzzle has three or four different colors to choose from so which one is the outside color?

Reply

I'm having trouble with

the yellow box... Without it, I can't figure out the code for the pink cabinet

Reply

I give it a 5 for the sheep alone.

Reply

My different solution to the Blue Cabinet puzzle, which also works:

Vowels, like O -> O. Consonants, like D -> X. AOY get "O"s. CLR get "X"s.

@shipoopie

I hope you were able to push through and solve the puzzles!

I agree that the colored sections puzzle is ambiguous regarding counting clockwise or counterclockwise. Whether to count the section under the arrow, and which color to use, I don't think are unclear, though.

I'm not sure what your confusion is about the cut fruit puzzle. The outside color is the color of the outside of the fruit...

@schram, you just blew my mind!

Ugh, I was totally thrown off on the avocados. I thought...

they were a clue to help with the fruits on the same table, because they actually form a pattern that helped me mentally organize where each colour petal goes in the corresponding cabinet door. I thought it redundant at the time I figured the petals out but shrugged my shoulders thereafter. I wonder if that redundancy was intentional? XD

BTW @chipmunk: thank you for your perfect walkthrough, I was obviously lost (or at least stuck for a very long time) without it. :'D
