JerradElectric Box 2Way back in the long-forgotten year of 2009, we reviewed a tile-based puzzle game called Electric Box . Since then, the game has maintained a steady following, with user levels constantly being added. Today, the people at Twinkle Star Games have released Electric Box 2, a supercharged sequel that's sure to make people forget all about the original.

The basics of the game haven't changed; the goal is still to get electricity from point A to point B, using every sort of tool imaginable. The items you're given can be grabbed with the mouse and placed anywhere on the grid, but they'll only work if they meet certain requirements. Once everything is in place, turn your contraption on and hope everything unfolds the way you had planned. But with the vast amount tools and possibilities available, it's going to take a lot of tinkering before you can find that perfect set-up.

In addition to the pre-made levels, the level creator is back, giving players an option to flex their own creative muscles. Levels can be saved and returned to later, and the process for sharing your work has been considerably streamlined, with a user-level browser, as well as seamless Facebook and Twitter sharing. The levels can also be placed into certain categories, so you can always find new content to fit your mood, whether you want a challenge, or if you prefer something with more style than substance.

Electric Box 2Analysis: Nearly everything in Electric Box 2 is an improvement on the original. Despite similar gameplay, it's hardly recognizable as a sequel to the original, thanks to the major makeover that has been given to the graphics. The cartoony graphics of the original have been replaced with smaller, more professional images, making it look less like a Rube Goldberg machine and more like real-world engineering schematics. Well, as real-world as you can get when you're using a hamster to power a hoverbot, anyway.

But it's not just the graphics that see a marked improvement over the original. The game is nearly three times as long as its predecessor, and has almost twice as many tools available. The difficulty has been ramped up, too; whereas the first could be beaten over a lunch break, this one is going to take considerably longer to work through. Electric Box 2 feels like the game the first one should have been. All of the elements that made it great are still there, but they've been expanded on and polished into perfection.

I wouldn't have thought that the original game could be improved upon, but clearly I understimated the ability of Twinkle Star Games to take things to a whole new level of awesome. Now I'm just waiting to see what you guys can come up with!

Level 28 has me completely stumped.

I've placed the light bulb at F1, one solar panel at F12 and the other at H1. I've placed the fan at H2 facing right, the generator at H9 and the carrier bot at G9 facing left. I've placed my spring at F11. The cannon is facing left. Given the circumstances I don't see how any of the above parts can be any other way, and I have no clue where to place the ball dropper.

When the machine starts, the light bulb powers the solar panel on the left, making the fan power the generator, which starts the carrier bot, which totes the cannon to the left. When the cannon passes F7, the circuit causes it to fire; the shot bounces off the fixed spring, then the movable spring, then takes out the light bulb. If I omit the movable spring it takes out the solar panel on the right instead. Either way the circuit is then doomed because there's no way to power the target's circuit.

The only place left that I can put the ball dropper where it'll receive power is on the main circuit, which makes it activate immediately and prevents it from taking out anything useful.

Can someone give me a hint, please? Not an outright solution, just a hint. Please?

Reply

Sonic:
You did the exact same thing I did.

The movable spring bounces the carrier bot, not the cannon shot.

Stuck on level 30

I've got fans at I2 F3 and B6, batteries at H2 and E3, steam detectors at H3 and E4, and the hamster at C10. So I can get the steam to the windchimes and activate the hamster.

But I can't for the life of me figure out how to use what I've got left to get the steam to B2.

It's half midnight my time. Maybe it'll make sense in the morning...

level 30

i think by the end you could just compile all my posts for a walkthrough

Reply
Patreon Crew SonicLover August 24, 2010 7:47 PM

Now it's Level 38 that's driving me bananas.

I think I've got the solution, I just can't carry it out. Initially, I've got the teleporter-sender at D11, the teleporter-receiver at F9, the hamster at E2 facing left, the laser device at L11 facing left, and the movable laser feeder at L3. I also have the two drills facing one another and the two cannons facing rightwards.

The plan is as follows: once the teleporters send the heater to E9 to fire that cannon, I move the receiver to H9, then the sender to F9, to send the heater to G9 and fire the other cannon. I then move the sender to K2 and the receiver back to F9 so they can send the push-bot to row E, which will let it push the ball-dropper to E3 and clear the rest of the laser's path to B1.

Problem is, I'm simply not fast enough to pull that off. If my reflexes were any good I wouldn't be playing a puzzle game in the first place. I barely have time to move the teleporters once each before the magic orb is taken out, and moving them twice each in the same brief timespan is almost certainly impossible. I can't help but wonder if I'm missing something.

Any help? Please?

Reply
repairmanman August 24, 2010 7:53 PM

how about this?

place the laser receiver at L3 to destroy the drills when they run into each other
and a sender at K2 to move the push bot to E9 (receiver at F9) which will push the dropper and get rid of the laser receiver, this is the solution

Reply

Okay, for level 38, I think I hit a bug:

I checked a video walkthrough to see what I needed to do because I was totally lost, and in the video, the person playing has a pusher where I have a hamster, and my pusher is pre-placed. I can't find any way around it because it makes one object immovable and I can't complete the level.

Reply
repairmanman August 24, 2010 7:54 PM

i forgot

to buy more time simply turn the push bot around once the drill is out of the way
and don't forget the laser at L11

Reply
repairmanman August 24, 2010 7:56 PM

not a bug, mine is like that too. level was probably too easy that way

Any hints on level 20? The Happy Birthday level?

Reply
repairmanman August 24, 2010 7:58 PM

i dealt with that in my second post(seeing as i forgot it)

Reply

@repairmanman

The only problem is that you would no longer be able to remove the laser receiver and it blocks the laser from reaching the goal.

Reply
Patreon Crew SonicLover August 24, 2010 7:59 PM

Aaack! I got it now! Thanks anyway, repairmanman.

I didn't realize you could buy more time by simply keeping the push-bot turned the wrong way until the teleporter nonsense was done with. I'm still trying to figure out how I was ever supposed to have thought of that.

Reply

I was just about to let you know. The only thing I don't get is why you originally had trouble with that. For me, the bot started facing the wrong way.

Reply

Well obviously not EVERYONE because that person had it the way I described it with the

already placed hamster and the pusher in the inventory

and the video walkthrough was for this level only. I was able to work my way through everything up until this.

Reply

Nevermind. Got it. So simple I feel like an idiot.

Further short-cuts on Level 37.

I save:

The fan and one solar panel.

Hints:

You can flip the cannon that's already on the board.

With this, you can make the heater in the top-left superfluous.

My Solution:

Place the following:
Teleport(Sender) at C5.
Solar Panel at A10.
Carrier Bot at B7, facing to the left.
Cannon at B10, facing to the left.
Push Bot at G9, facing to the left.

Flip the pre-placed:
Cannon at G7 faces to the right.

your level 26 is wrong; the 2nd kettle needs the heater

Reply

An addendum to lvl 37. Neither the shortcut or the full on (which still left out one item) worked for me.

This is my solution.

Cannon: B2 facing right
Fan: D5 facing left
Carrier: B7 facing left
Solar Panel: B4
Solar Panel: A10
Teleporter: C5
Push Bot: G5 facing right

Don't change the direction of the cannon.

hello, here comes my second level
this one is a very complex auto level
feature: multi-teleport, wireless selection
enjoy~

Uhm, could somebody explain why level 16 works the way it's explained in the walkthrough?
How is the lightbulb on if it has no power source?

Lvl 36 alternative solution

K1 - Heater
K2 - Receiver(TP)
I3 - IPS Battery
C3 - Steam Detector
D4 - Music station
E4 - Sender(TP)
J8 - Hamster
K8 - Cannon
8/11 pieces used

Nevermind, the walkthrough is wrong, its supposed to be heater at b7 not c7 for that one.

@darkid: Thanks for the contact details. Wasn't sure where to find them.

I've emailed them the level 33 (-3 object) solution

Cheers

@darkid: I enjoyed your level, darkid. I'm not usually good at sandboxes, but I found a way. For those curious, here's my solution, with no more than one of each item:

Solar panel at J7
Kettle at D7 (direction doesn't matter)
Power generator at E7
Music bot at D6
Wind chimes at D5
Charger flashlight at E6, facing right
Heli bot at F3
Charger fan at G3, facing right
Laser feeder at H3
WCS at E8
WCR at F11
Laser device at H11, facing left

The kettle pours water on the generator, powering the charger light and the WCS. The WCS sends current to the WCR, which powers the laser device, which fires at the laser feeder. The laser feeder powers the charger fan and the heli bot; the heli bot lifts the charger fan, cutting its power and making it start in the process, until it's level with the wind chimes. The charger fan makes the wind chimes ring, activating the music bot and making it push the charger flashlight downwards, cutting its power and making it light in the process. When it stops, it powers the solar panel and thus the target. Viola!

Correction to walkthrough level 32:

everything on the screenshot is good except the mirror on D6 should be on C6; mirrors on K6 and D9 should be flipped from what is in the screenshot.

I can't figure out level 16 at all, even with the walkthrough and Charlatan's correction...if I have them all in those places then the ball dropper just hits the solar panel and carrier and knocks them both off the level :S

Reply

Ahhhhhhh I just got it. It really should say in the walkthrough that for level 16 you need to

flip the carrier so that is facing left. It will drive to underneath the flipper, the flipper will flip the carrier around so it is moving the other way, and it will pick up the solar panel and move it across after the ball has dropped.

Using the editor makes you appreciate how hard it is to create a level that is neither too obvious, too abstract or susceptible to shortcuts. I hope mine at least achieves the latter.

SonicLover, there is a *much* faster solution, involving 7 pieces. I challenge you to find it!

Ah... it looks like CANDYSTAND went down... wow.

Maybe just from traffic, or they're updating the game.

Correction: B2 Cannon (face right)

Is it me, or are all the new levels getting vote-spammed down? Each new level gets 16 or 18 votes in the first few hours, and they always get rated straight 1s afterwards.

In the meantime... after two years, I've made another one: http://www.candystand.com/play/electric-box-2#?key=f2ae2446-08b9-48af-b756-6c7a8532b9de
