Escape from Boss Room
So the day starts out like any other. There you sit in your cramped cubicle under flickering fluorescents, typing desultorily while wondering if you can sneak into Facebook for a second and check what's going on. But what's this? A summons from the boss? Heart racing you leap from your squeaky, broken chair. Is this the opportunity you've been waiting for? A raise? A promotion? Or the opposite, are you getting canned for too much net surfing? Shakily you make your way to the big boss' big office, praying for the former and not the latter. You enter nervously, hoping the next words you hear are not "Perhaps it's time for you to pursue other opportunities". Wait, where's the boss? Why is the door locked? And what does this memo mean, "Escape this Room!" Perhaps it means you shouldn't be playing Weekday Escape at work? Welcome to Escape from Boss Room, the latest room escape from Tesshi-e.
Tesshi-e games have always had amusing start scenarios, but this one takes the cake. Is this boss insane or just stupid? Seriously, would you lock an employee into such a luxurious office as this? I'd be afraid that they'd either trash the place or take anything that isn't nailed down. Or bolted down, as you will find in the game. Well, considering that this person has a nameplate on his desk that just says "Boss", maybe it would be fun to trash the office. Sorry, digressing. Nevertheless this wacky setup is the beginning of some seriously good casual gameplay.
Although Escape from Boss Room is a classic single room escape, this room is vast. This is the type of room that takes two or three clicks to reach a piece of furniture for a close up, creating some navigational oddities that can be confusing at first. Still, it is a single room, so eventually you, you lucky gamer you, will figure it out. With its huge space, fancy furniture, expensive trinkets, and big-screen TV this is the room of a boss you could love to hate.
The one thing you can always count on in a Tesshi-e escape is attention to detail. First of all are the backgrounds and objects. Serious attention to detail is placed in the colors, textures, shapes, lighting, reflections, etc., enough to make this feel like a real room. Fortunately, this same detail oriented approach has been used to create a wide array of fantastic puzzles as well, making this one of Tesshi-e's denser efforts, reminiscent of Escape from 5th Door, albeit with only two endings. Multiple locked doors and drawers, puzzles (one color based), logic problems, tools, and keys await those who dare enter the boss' lair. Even the music is not Tesshi-e's usual fare, making this an extremely enjoyable game. A mute button, a save function, easy inventory control, all of the usual bells and whistles are included, although we still have to deal with no changing cursor and a bit of pixel hunting.
Escape from Boss Room is mostly in English, although there are still a few instances where you will get incomprehensible Japanese (unless, of course, you can read Japanese). Hilarity still ensues with some of the "Engrish" translations; the best one is about a life-size dog statue (or is that a real, stuffed dog? Ewww!) that the game calls a "dog doll". The game inquires if the boss likes dogs, but I seriously want to know if he likes to play with dollies there in his overblown office. Normally the difference between the regular and "happy coin" escapes in a Tesshi-e game boil down to the difference between continuing a walk or getting a nice beverage, or the difference between getting a drink and getting a full meal. In Escape from Boss Room, however, the reward difference between the escapes is pretty huge, just like the boss' office.
Escape from Boss Room is perhaps not that elusive "perfect" escape, but it comes darn close in terms of design, puzzles, and just plain fun. Challenging, beautiful and entertaining, this is the perfect way to waste some time, at work or at home. Put your escaping caps on, guys, it's time to Escape from Boss Room!

Escape the Boss Room Walkthrough
Looking around & Picking things up
Television View
You start facing a television. Zoom in. You can't turn the tv on (yet), and there is a sound system that you can't do anything with. Zoom out.
Zoom in on the door. Locked, unsurprisingly.
Zoom in again on the keypad. Instead of numbers, it says
GET
COI
NDX
Huh, wonder what that means?
There's also a keyhole on the bottom of the keypad. Zoom out twice.
Cabinet View
Turn to the left. There is a cabinet and some lockers.
Zoom in on the cabinet. Open the left black cabinet door. There is some sort of device on the bottom shelf with two stands to put. . .something? . . . in. Nothing else here so zoom out.
The bottom cabinet requires a 3 letter code to open. Zoom out again.
On top of the cabinet on the left is a pretty picture and an art object. Zoom out.
On to the right side of the cabinet. Open the black door and pick up the circle key on the bottom shelf. There are some books here that aren't clickable - two yellow, three blue, and one red. Zoom out.
The cabinet beneath needs a 4 digit code, and has the hint "Look memo paper" written underneath it. Zoom out.
Zoom in on the art objects. Click the object on the left - it's a compass. There's a dial sticking out.
Click the dial and whoa! The needle swings to the left. Remember that the needle on a compass always points north. Nothing else here so zoom out thrice.
Click on the lockers. Use the circle key on the left locker and take the umbrella. Zoom out and turn left.
Desk View
Front of the desk
On this screen you'll see a plant, a desk, and a dog. Clicking on the plant and the dog tells us that Boss really likes plants and dogs. Good to know.
Click on the desk. There are two views of the opposite side of the desk. Start with the view on the right (mouse over the area above the desk until you see a blue arrow appear, then click)
Boss's View of desk
The top drawer is locked, but you can pick up a pencil from the middle drawer, and note that there are three books in the bottom drawer: one red, one yellow, one blue.
Click on the desktop. If you click around the computer you will find you can turn the computer on, and there is a slot for a USB memory stick. Zoom out of the computer view.
Click on the Boss's fancy nameplate to see that it is bolted to the desk. Zoom out.
Click on the phone. The buttons are clickable but we don't have a phone number to call yet.
Zoom all the way out until you are looking at the front of the desk again.
Click on the left view of the desk.
Pick up the remote control from the top drawer.
In the middle drawer, pick up a 'green globular part.'
There is nothing to pick up in the bottom drawer, but there is one more red book. Zoom all the way out and turn left.
Clock/Couch View
Zoom in on the grandfather clock. The pendulum has some numbers on it and what look like lights, but the glass cover is bolted on. Zoom out.
Zoom in on the clock face. Looks like a normal clock face. There is a star painted next to the face. Zoom out.
Zoom in on the right side of the base of the clock. There's a plate that screwed on. Looks like we need a screwdriver. Zoom out.
Zoom in on the plate on the wall. It says BOSS and is screwed into the wall. Zoom all the way out.
Click on the couch area. There is some kind of box with four buttons on the coffee table, but we don't know the code yet. Zoom out.
Click under the left sofa. Use the umbrella to reach the ball. The text helpfully tells us there is a 'ditch' on the ball. Unfortunately, it won't open yet. Zoom out.
Solving puzzles
The Spade Key
We have two mysterious green balls. Where did we see an item with two pedestals?
There was a device in the black cabinet.
Turn left twice to get there from the couch view. Put one ball on each holder thing and get the spade key from the bottom of the device. Make sure to take back the ball with the 'ditch!'
The spade key works on the right hand locker. There are more books here (Boss really likes to read huh?) - two blue and one yellow. Click on the top shelf of the locker and pick up the screwdriver.
The Clock
If you click on the screwdriver, the shaft comes apart, and you can flip it around to work as either a flat or philips. Set it to the flat head, then use the screwdriver on the green ball with the divot. Yay a wrench! Return the screwdriver to the philips head configuration.
Zoom all the way out and turn left twice to go back to the clock. Unscrew the panel at the base. Ooh a lever! Wonder what it does?
Click the lever then zoom out. The clock face looks funny. Let's zoom in on it. The numbers have been rearranged. From the top, going clockwise, they read 8, 4, 10, 6, 1, 9, 3, 11, 5, 7, 2, 12.
Zoom out and then zoom in on the pendulum. Use the wrench to take the cover off.
The pendulum says 8625. Wonder what that means?
Click on the buttons that correspond to 8, 6, 2, and 5 on the rearranged clock face (or in other works, 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 8 o'clock, and 10 o'clock). Pick up the club key.
The club key opens the locked drawer in the desk. Pick up the batteries and USB stick, and note there is another yellow book. Zoom all the way out.
The TV
We have a remote with batteries, so let's try the tv again. Open the remote and put batteries in, then click the button. The TV shows a 3x3 checkerboard image with the phrase WE SEE above it.
Where have we seen a checkerboard before?
Zoom out and go to the couch view. Zoom in on the coffee table.
The Checkerboard
WESEE stands for the cardinal directions west, east, south, east, east. But which way is which?
The compass needle was pointing to the left when we were facing the cabinet. Since the cabinet is on the opposite side of the room from the couch, north is to the right.
Click the buttons in the following order: top, bottom, left, bottom, bottom. The center square lights up and says 'HIT'
The left cabinet required a 3-letter combination. Let's try it! Zoom all the way out and turn left twice to get to the cabinet.
HIT' opens the cabinet. Inside, note that there are two yellow books and two red books. Pick up the paper. It is described as 'stellar paper' and has a gold star on it.
The Note Paper
We have a pencil and a paper. You know what to do!
Open the note and use the pencil on the note. The note has some arrows, pointing up, right, down, and left.
Didn't the lock on the other cabinet say "Look memo paper"? But how do we translate arrows into a number code?
Where have we seen a gold star before?
The star hints to look at the clock face. Imagine the arrows are clock hands extending from the center of the clock. The first arrow points at the 12 o'clock position, which reads 8 on the funny clock face. The second arrow points to 3 o'clock, or 6, etc.
Input 8637 on the right hand cabinet.
There is a small tool to pick up on the right hand side of the cabinet. There are also more books: two blue, one yellow, one red.
The BOSS Wall Plate
Unscrew the Boss plate next to the clock. It requires a 3-digit code. Above the code entry area are the letter BRY and beneath is scrawled the word Books. Gee, I wonder what they want here?
We've opened all the drawers and cabinets, so just count up how many of each book we've seen.
The code is 868. Enter the code then click the long button. The panel says "Look" with an arrow to the right. Zoom out.
There's a safe now next to the painting. Zoom in on it. It needs a 4 digit code and has the code *651# written on the door.
The Safe
Go to the desk. Click on the phone and enter the code from the safe. Some of the buttons light up - 2, then 4, then 9, then 8. Zoom out of the phone view.
Go back to the safe and enter the code from the phone. Heart key! Yay!
The Computer
We still have USB stick in inventory. Let's see what's on it. Go back to the desk. Put the USB stick in the slot and click the keyboard to turn on the computer. Uh oh. It wants a password. Zoom out.
I wonder why the boss screwed down his nameplate?
Zoom in on the nameplate and use the small tool from the cabinet to unscrew it.
Under the nameplate is the code escape49
Go back to the computer and enter this password. The computer shows us the number 736.
Getting Out
Go to the door and click on the keypad. Use the heart key to unlock the keypad, then enter the code.
The code came from the computer.
736
Unlocked! We can exit now!
Happy Coin!
For some reason once the keypad is unlocked it says DOG.
Remember what the keys said before we used the key on it? GET COIN DX.
Enter the code DOG using the original letters on the keys.
257
The keypad now says happycoin, but where is the coin itself?
The boss likes dogs right?
He likes them so much he has a statue of a dog.
Go to the dog statue and click it's mouth.
Happy coin exit!

Escape from Boss Room Walkthrough
General Information
There are two escape scenarios, regular and happy coin, which requires finding the happy coin to complete.
Examine each object you pick up carefully, they may be hiding something.
Try to remember what direction a compass needle always points.
Directions for the colorblind included.
Good luck!
Exploration
You begin facing a really nice flat screen TV.
Click on the TV for a close up.
Hmmm, looks like we'll need a remote.
Click on the door to the left of the TV for a close up. Yep, locked.
There's a little panel on the wall next to the door, click on the panel for a close up.
Okay, we have a keypad that doesn't work, and instead of numbers it appears to be the letters g-e-t-c-o-i-n-d-x.
Looks like we need a key to make this work. Back up twice and turn left.
Lots to explore over here, isn't there? What appears to be two wooden lockers on the left, and a large cabinet straight ahead.
Click on the lockers for a close up.
Okay, both lockers are locked. Lucky boss for having two lockers!
Back up, and click on the large cabinet for a close up.
Okay, we have two single black door cabinets on top, two double door cabinets below, and stuff sitting on the cabinet top.
Click on the left black doored cabinet for a close up.
Click on the door to open it. Hmmm, lots of junk, but there's something on the bottom shelf that says something can be put on it. Looks like a scale or something...
Back up and click on the right black doored cabinet for a close up.
Open the black door and take the circle key.
We also have some books here, a yellow and a blue book on the top shelf, and 2 blue, 1 yellow, and 1 red books on the bottom shelf.
Back up and click on the right side of the cabinet top to examine the items.
On the right we have a beautiful art object, but on the left we have (if you click on it for a close up) what looks like a compass.
Click on the knob on the compass and the needle swings to the left, apparently West. Is that how a compass is supposed to work?
Back up twice and click on the left side of the cabinet top to examine the items.
Okay, a pretty picture and another art object. Helpful.
Back up and click on the lower cabinet doors on the left.
Looks like we need a three letter code here which we don't have. Back up.
Click on the lower cabinet doors on the right for a close up.
Okay, a four digit code needed here, with the clue "look memo paper".
Back up twice and turn left.
Now we're talking, let's search the boss' desk!
Click on the desk for a close up.
Love the nameplate. "Boss" indeed.
If you hover your mouse over the desk top, you will see two blue arrows, one on the left and one on the right. Looks like we can search on either side.
Click the left blue arrow.
All right, let's open some drawers!
In the top drawer you should find a TV remote. However, if you click on the battery cover you will find it has a dearth of batteries. Lovely. Back up.
In the middle drawer you should find a green ball. Helpful. Back up.
In the bottom drawer you will find a red book, which you can't remove. Back up.
Click on the desk top for a close up.
Click on the phone (on the right). Cool, you can pick up the phone! What's the number for 911?
Put down the phone and click on the nameplate for a close up.
Looks like it's bolted down. Back up.
Click on the PC Monitor for a close up.
Well, if you click on the keyboard you can turn the computer on, but nothing else. Hey, that red thing to the right of the keyboard has a USB slot...
Back up twice and you should be looking at the other side of the desk, with three new drawers to explore.
Except that the top one is locked, and the circle key doesn't work. Darn!
In the middle drawer you should find a pencil. Back up.
In the bottom drawer you should find three more books, one yellow, one red, one blue.
Back up three times until you are looking at the front of the desk again.
You know, maybe that key will work on one of the lockers?
Turn right, click on the lockers for a close up, and use the circle key on the left locker.
Okay, we now have an umbrella, I'm sure that will come in handy. Indoors.
Back up and turn left twice.
Nice furniture! Why can't I find a job with an office like this?
Click on the coffee table for a close up of the furniture.
Click on the picture for a close up.
Nice, a gentle picture. Does that mean anything? Back up once.
Click on the coffee table again for a closer close up.
We've got something with white buttons that we can push. Wonder what they do?
Back up once and click underneath the left sofa. Let's see if we can find any dirt, shall we?
No dirt, but there's something waaaayyyy back there underneath. Guess the umbrella will come in handy after all. Use the umbrella to retrieve the object (another green ball).
This green ball, though, appears to have a notch in the side. Shame we don't have a coin, or a screwdriver.
Back up twice.
Nice looking grandfather clock there to the right of the sofa. Let's look at it.
Click on the clock for a close up.
Click on the clock face for a closer look.
Okay, looks like a pretty standard clock face, although there's a star here, so maybe it's a clue.
It also appears to be 9:10, but I wonder if that means anything?
Back up and click on the clock pendulum for a close up.
Okay, now this is interesting. We have the number 8625 on the pendulum. And the pendulum is behind glass that is bolted down. Looks like we need a wrench. Back up.
Click to the right of the base of the clock to see the side of the base. Looks like a panel that needs a phillips screwdriver. Back up.
There's a plaque on the wall to the right of the clock, click on it for a close up.
"Boss" again, huh? The ego knows no bounds.
And once again it looks like we need a phillips screwdriver.
Back up twice.
Let's start solving some puzzles, shall we?
The Mystery of the Green Balls
Turn until you are facing the large cabinet with the black doors.
Click on the cabinet for a close up.
Now click on the left black doored cabinet for a close up, and open the cabinet door.
There's that scale thing. Looks like it has two holders.
What a coincidence, we have two identical things in our inventory.
Place the green balls in the holders on the scale (the holders look like martini glasses to me) and click on the bottom of the scale when it opens. A spade key!
Take the green balls back and back up twice.
Click on the lockers for a close up and use the spade key on the right locker.
Looks like 2 blue books and a yellow book. Hey, is there something on the top shelf? Click on the top shelf for a close up and take the screwdriver.
Back up twice.
The Grandfather Clock
Well, we saw a couple of places where we could use this phillips head screwdriver.
Turn until you are facing the sofas, then click on the clock for a close up.
Click to the right of the base of the clock to see the panel there.
Use the screwdriver to remove the panel.
Hmmm, a lever, let's pull it!
Back up once, then click on the clock face.
Whoah, freaky, the numbers switched around!
Maybe this has something to do with the pendulum?
Back up once and click on the pendulum for a close up.
If only we had a wrench!
Let's think about this for a second.
Could there already be a wrench hidden in our inventory? Tesshi-e likes to hide things inside other things.
That's right, we have that green ball with a notch in it! But how to get it open...
Pull up the screwdriver from your inventory.
Click on the phillips end of the screwdriver. Yep, it's reversible.
Click again to reassemble the screwdriver, then pull up the green ball with the notch (or ditch, hee!) in it.
Use the screwdriver on the notch and voila, there's our wrench!
Use the wrench on the glass plate covering the pendulum. Now we're cooking with gas!
Cool, you can click on those dots around the pendulum.
And we have the number 8625 as a hint.
But if you click the positions as if they were on a clock (8 o'clock, 6 o'clock, etc.) it doesn't do anything.
Let's look at the face of the clock again.
Now that the numbers are scrambled, they are in different positions.
The 8 is in the 12 o'clock position, the 6 is in the 3 o'clock position, the 2 is in the 10 o'clock position, and the 5 is in the 8 o'clock position.
Back up and click on the pendulum for a close up.
Light up the 12, 3, 10, and 8 o'clock dots on the pendulum.
Wow, a club key! Maybe this will finally open that desk drawer?
Back up twice.
Turn right to face the desk, click on the desk for a close up, then click on the right side of the desk.
Use the club key on the top drawer and you will find a yellow book, some batteries (yay!) and a flash drive.
Back up twice.
The Television
Turn until you are facing the TV and click on it for a close up.
Pull up the remote from your inventory, open the battery cover, and place the batteries inside.
Click the remote button and see what comes on.
Okay, it says WE SEE and has something that looks remarkably like the black and white thing on the coffee table.
Back up and turn right.
Click on the coffee table twice for a close up of the black and white thing.
WE SEE, huh? Could those be directions, like west, east, south, etc.?
But which way is which?
Remember the compass?
Back up twice and turn left twice until you are facing the large cabinet.
Click on the cabinet for a close up and click on the objects on the right side of the cabinet.
Click on the compass for a close up.
The needle is pointing to W.
That's not how a compass works. A compass needle is magnetic, and always points to magnetic north.
That means the direction to the left is not West, but North.
Back up three times and turn right twice.
Click on the coffee table twice for a close up.
When we were looking at the cabinet, North was to the left. Now that we've turned around 180 degrees, North is to the right, which puts East at the bottom, South on the left, and West on the top.
Push the buttons in the order described in the TV clue, i.e. top, bottom, left, bottom, bottom.
And we have the word "hit". I'd like to hit something...
Wait, the lower left cabinet needed a three letter combination...
Back up twice and turn right twice.
Click on the lower left cabinet twice and enter the code HIT.
Click on the doors to open them.
Okay, we have a piece of paper with a star on it (take the paper) and more books, two yellow, two red.
Back up twice.
The Right Lower Cabinet
Click on the right lower cabinet twice for a close up.
The clue for the 4 digit code says "look memo paper".
Well we just picked up a paper, but all it has on it is a star.
Oh yeah, we have that pencil.
Use the pencil on the paper to reveal a clue, arrows that go up, right, down, and left.
Well that's helpful.
Let's think about this for a minute, where have we seen a star?
That's right, the face of the clock!
Back up twice, turn right twice, and click on the clock face twice for a close up.
Okay, let's consider the arrows as directions towards numbers. Up would be 8, right would be 6, down would be 3, and left would be 7.
Back up twice, turn right twice, and click on the lower cabinet twice for a close up.
Enter the code 8637 and click on the doors to open them.
Once the cabinet doors are open, take the small object on the lower right (mini-wrench). Notice that there are more books here, 2 blue, 1 red, and 1 yellow.
Back up twice.
"Boss" Wall Plate
Turn until you are facing the couches.
Click on the clock for a close up, then click on the wall plate to the right for a close up.
Pull up your screwdriver and reverse it back to the phillips head.
Use the screwdriver on the wall plate to remove it.
Okay, we have a 3 digit code, the letters B R Y, and the word Books.
Perhaps it is asking for a total of the three different kinds of books we've seen, Blue, Red, and Yellow?
You can go back and count them up, all of the books in the locker, the cabinets, and the desk drawers.
There are a total of 8 blue books, 6 red books, and 8 yellow books.
Enter the code 868 and push the button underneath.
Cool, now we have the word "look" and an arrow to the right.
Back up once.
Cool, the picture moved, revealing an alcove.
Click on the alcove for a close up.
And we have a safe that needs yet another 4 digit code with a clue that reads *651#.
Back up twice.
Desk Top
Turn until you are facing the desk. Click on the desk for a close up, then click on either the left or right side of the desk to get behind it.
Click on the desk top to sit down.
Click on the PC for a close up.
Place the flash drive in the red thing to the right of the keyboard, then click on the keyboard.
Looks like we need a password. Back up.
Click on the nameplate for a close up.
Use the mini-wrench to lift the nameplate to get the password (escape49).
Back up and click on the PC again.
Click on the keyboard, then put your cursor into the white space and type in the password (escape49).
Okay, we have the number 736. Great.
Back up.
Let's play with the phone, shall we?
Pick up the phone. Remember the clue from the wall safe? *651#?
See what happens when you push those buttons on the phone.
Hope you were watching when the numbers lit up. That's a four digit code, 2498.
Back up 4 times.
Regular Escape
Let's go back to the wall safe. Turn until you are facing the couch.
Click on the cubby with the wall safe twice for a close up.
Enter the four digit code you got from the phone (2498), open the safe, and take the heart key.
Back up twice.
Turn left and click on the door for a close up.
Click on the keypad to the right of the door for a close up.
Use the heart key on the keypad. Now we have numbers!
Enter the code you got from the PC (736), hit enter and notice that it now says unlocked. Back up once.
Click on the door and you are out! Enjoy the canned coffee.
Happy Coin Escape
Follow the Regular Escape right up until you put in the PC code.
Enter the PC code (736) and hit enter.
Notice that it now says "Dog" at the top.
Do you remember what the keys looked like before you used the heart key?
The top row was GET, the middle row was COI, and the bottom row was NDX.
You should click the numbers that correspond with the word "dog", i.e. 257.
Now it says "Happy Coin".
Back up twice and turn to face the desk.
Yep, time to confront the creepy stuffed dog doll. Click on the dog for a close up.
See, the happy coin is hanging out of his mouth. Take the coin.
Try not to think about what kind of person has a keypad in their office that causes a creepy stuffed dog to barf up a coin. Just back up, turn around to face the door, click on the door and leave.
Enjoy the canned coffee and the flight!
Happy Coin will bring happiness to you!!
