Factory Balls 4ArtbegottiSome might argue that life working on a conveyor belt is tedious work, but not if you're working for Bart Bonte Manufacturing. As white balls come rolling down the line, your job is to custom craft each ball to a specific order in Factory Balls 4, the latest in the series of Factory Balls puzzlers. You've got all the tools you need to fulfill each order... except the instruction manual.

In each of this installment's 30 levels, you'll see the target design on the shipping box. Grab one of the balls from the tumbler and get to work wrapping, painting, and stretching the ball to match the design by dragging it to the tool you want to use (or by clicking on the tool). If you can create a copycat of the target ball, it's ready for shipping and you're off to your next design puzzle. But you have to be careful, because some actions can't be undone, so you'll have to plan out the order of your moves, or else you'll have to scrap the project and start again.

Factory balls continues in its challenging tradition of making you think hard about how to achieve the perfect design with lots of layering and careful attention to detail. While solving the puzzles might be slightly problematic for people with colorblindness, the simple, no-nonsense interface (a Bonte trademark) makes this game accessible to any puzzling level, though the difficulty ramps up rather quickly! It's helpful to remember how you accomplish certain patterns for use in later levels, as the puzzles stack on each other, creating new levels of complexity to plow through. If you've got the puzzling intuition, Factory Balls 4 is the perfect diversion to keep you working hard (unless if playing this game means you're shirking off on your real job!)

Factory Balls 4 walkthrough

General Tips

  • As with other games in the Factory Balls series, your goal is to manufacture the ball shown on the box in the middle of the screen.

  • Drag a ball from the rotating bin in the lower left corner onto one of the tools to start. Keep using different tools until you achieve your goal.

    • Cans of paint will color exposed areas.

    • Glasses, hats, helmets, grabbers, belts, and bowls will keep certain areas from being painted.

    • Plungers and pliers will stretch the ball in certain ways.

    • The scraper will remove all paint from exposed areas. It is effectively very similar to white paint.

  • Paint-blocking tools sometimes have to be added or removed in a certain order. For example, you cannot add a belt after you have added a hat. Likewise, you have to remove a hat before you can remove a belt underneath it.

  • If you make a mistake, you can drag the ball to the recycling bin at the bottom to start over. Often a fresh coat of paint will also let you effectively start over.

  • Many puzzles are more easily solved if you think about painting one section of the ball at a time.

Done! That was fun. Either I'm getting better at these, or this one was easier. Either way, I look forward to Factory Balls 5 (or another themed Factory Balls.

Good Lord. I think one of the levels was an Angry Birds nod.

Mr. Bonte, I'm partially colorblind, but despite that, I really enjoy the Factory Balls puzzles. (I just need to occasionally re-solve puzzles to get the correct colors). As an idea for future releases, could you try finding a way to make these puzzles a little more colorblind-friendly?
One possible way, while maintaining your clean (and mostly) word-free interface, would be to add an eyedropper type tool, that (when hovering over the image on the box) would make the appropriate paint can glow.
Thanks!

Love this series - this one definitely felt easier, though. I recall having more difficulty with some of the earlier releases (often when fish or plants were involved). Luckily the last couple of releases haven't limited the number of balls you can throw away/blow up if you make an irreversible mistake - that has made them much less frustrating.

Level 24 was Awesome!

One comment - it's frustrating to figure out which way to build the ball (which turns out to be one of two opposite ways) and always choose the wrong one. I don't know the exact levels, but as near as I can tell, the only difference between the two possibilities is 5 degrees of rotation; but only one specific orientation is accepted. The levels I'm talking about use the top and bottom to make different colored wedges; one set of steps gives you color X with color Y wedges, and the other set of steps gives you color y with color x wedges. Shouldn't those be accepted too?

Other than that, wonderful game; I eagerly await FB5!

This one was too easy!

JIGuest, it's unfair to say it was too easy when people complained that the prequels were too hard.

Ooh, a new Factory Balls! And one I can do all by myself, without the aid of a walkthrough! So much fun.

Crank Yanker, about the colored wedges:

The easiest way for me to tell whether I've got the right colors is to look at which colors are at the very edge of the ball. It's hard to tell when you're looking at the stripes/wedges in the middle of the ball, but the edges will tell you where the colors are supposed to go.

Excellent as always! Love Bart Bonte's games. Factory Balls is a great challenge, and even though the main concept never changes, Bart always brings in a little novelty to make things different and interesting. Part of me also wonders, will there be a Sugar Sugar reprisal?

PS. I love the music for these games.

I agree this one was a little too simple. It just didn't seem to bring anything new to concept.

For the colorblind, and for general organization and clarity, I've updated the walkthrough with a list of colors and tools available each level.

Finished the game? Good!
Now you're thinking with balls!

Having played all the earlier installments i must say I found this one a bit too easy. Still lots of fun though.

Can I just whine for a moment about the ad system on JIG? I'll sit through the ads but I really wish I could mute them. They often scare the heck out of me and then I have to turn off all my music, or my podcasts, or whatever.

Also, another factory balls is always fun; it's a great concept that reminds me of those tests in school on mechanical reasoning, only fun!

[I am indeed sorry that the ads are an inconvenience with no way to mute them other than your computer's volume or mute control, but they are absolutely necessary for us to stay in business. I pay our review team lots of money each month to bring you reviews of the best of what's out there. Without the ad revenue, I would be forced to shut down the site. This one did seemed easier than the others did but it was still lots of fun! Maybe they will do a halloween one next!

So many eyes.

i agree, this one felt easier than the past versions. it was fun though.

Might not have been quite as difficult as the predecessors, but DANG that was fun!

I did have one question about level 24, though:

When I dropped the finished ball in the box...shouldn't it have exploded or something?

Reply

I've really liked the factory ball series but it seems like this one isn't as creative as the originals. While the puzzles are well made, I felt like I was constantly doing variations of the same puzzle. I think this version oversimplified the formula and lost some of it's charm.

I think I groaned after the 20th time I had to make little eyeballs on my ball with the black and white paint and glasses. Where's Cheeo pet balls, fish bowls, and disco lights?

I wouldn't challenge Bonte to make the games harder, guys. I've always been surprised that he hasn't done a solar system concept, and making Earth would be incredibly difficult, so let's not grump, alright?

Although it would be fun to see what happened to Pluto :).

Well, I for one am doing a happy dance--30 new levels, no complaints. And I love that we can now click on the paint or the glasses and not have to drag/drop everything. That is part of what feels "easier" to me. I'm just happy to have a game to enjoy this morning as I drink my coffee...exactly what I came here for.

Reply

It was a nice diversion but like some of the other reviewers, I wish it was as hard as some of the previous games. Also, more diversity would be nice... I got a bit annoyed making eyes after about the 10th time.

I hope Bonte comes out with a 2nd Christmas version at a similar difficulty level as the last one. That was my favorite factory balls game :)

Nice game. An observation about color psychology at the end:

When you are able to draw on the ball, choose the lighter grey shade and draw on the darker and lighter parts of the ball. It looks as if the shades of grey are different. I forget what this phenomenon is called.

There's a really weird bug in level 17. It doesn't affect the gameplay, but it made me do a double take. When you succeed in copying the target, the red and the orange halves switch places just before the ball drops into the box! Try it and you'll see.

Agree with CrankYanker on the "grabbers", also, I'd like a button to just remove all "extras", the protective stuff, in one click/drag. Small and large sunglasses, left/right cup, the hats, the grabbers, and most of these have to be removed in order, and you have to remember/find out again which was where. The order while putting them on is ok for immersion (though it could go as well)but an error signal would be nice when an action fails.

Yeah, I thought the difficulty curve was a bit shallow on this one as well... and I miss the flower and glass ones from the previous games. I mean, I like drawing eyes, but there were a bit too many of them... though I loved the Angry Birds reference.

Fun as always for kids and grownups. I like it when we can play a game together. And dang, the 10 year old is better at it than me :)
