Fungi Escape

DoraIf you want cute and weird in your escape games, Yonashi is always a solid bet, and Fungi Escape fits the bill nicely as you find yourself standing in front of a cute little forest cottage surrounded by lots and lots of, well, fungi. And fungi-themed locks. And fungi-themed puzzles. In fact, there're so much fungi-themed things in this game that the word fungi has already lost meaning to me at this point and doesn't even look like a real word anymore. To play, just click to interact when the cursor changes, and use the transparent overlays that pop up to navigate to different areas. Click an item in your inventory to highlight it for use, or use the "about item" function to view it close up. Many areas will have multiple transitions for you to navigate to, so make sure you waggle yon cursor about everywhere just in case you missed something.

Fungi Escape has some mild issues with unintuitive navigation due to the way it ferrets some area transitions around, but the sense of surreal whimsy you've come to expect from a Yonashi game definitely comes out intact. Once you've found the places you're able to explore, you'll be able to hunt for clues... a lot of clues, actually, since Fungi Escape seems to enjoy tucking hints in everywhere, which you'll have to interpret in order to solve the puzzles in your way. Figuring out how to use the information you find scrawled on walls or in other (stranger) places actually makes up the bulk of the game, but if you want an escape game that's sweet, silly, and just the right amount of odd, Fungi Escape is an easy recommendation even if it'll have you going in circles.

Fungi Escape Walkthrough

  1. You start the game facing the hut. Turn left once, then go up the road to the river.

    • Take the HAMMER from the edge of the water.

  2. Go back once and turn right once to face the hut again. Click the side of the hut (not the edge of the screen) to find the backyard. The backyard has three sections: the left side, the middle side, and the right side.

  3. On the left side of the backyard are three white mushrooms.

    • Hit the middle mushroom to find the SILVER KEY.

  4. Move right twice to reach the right side of the backyard.

  5. Use the SILVER KEY to unlock the blue belt over the right mushroom. Now click the top of the right mushroom to zoom in.

    • This mushroom cap has three layers, and each layer has a picture which shows the purpose of each special mushroom.

    • The top layer shows the SPOTTED MUSHROOM, which provides night vision.

    • The middle layer shows the PINK AND WHITE MUSHROOM, which shrinks you.

    • The bottom layer shows the TRUFFLE, which must be found in the ground using a keen sense of smell.

  6. Go right twice. You should now see two paths, one going left and one going right. Click the left path.

    • Take the SPOTTED MUSHROOM on the ground beside the colorful mushroom log.

  7. Step back once and right once. Click the hatch in the ground to open it, then click the stairs to climb into the basement.

    • It's too dark to see, but remember the layered mushroom already told us what to do.

      • Select the SPOTTED MUSHROOM, then click the "About Item" button to view it more closely.

      • Click the zoomed-in picture of the mushroom. When it asks "eat?" select "YES" to take a bite.

      • Now you have night vision! You should be able to see just fine in the basement.

    • Like the backyard, the basement has three sections. Check out the left side, the middle side (where you start upon entering the basement), and then the left side. Take note of the three important clues you find at each section. You'll need to use them very soon!

  8. Go to the middle of the basement, then step back to go back outside. From there, walk left once, then take the left forked path to return to the mushroom log.

    • Note the height and the color of all the mushrooms. If you compare them with the clue you found on the left side of the basement, you'll find a code!

      • The letters on the top of the left-side basement code stand for the different colors of the mushrooms.

        • P = Pink, O = Orange, W = White, B = Blue, and G = Grey.

      • The ascending numbers at the bottom of the code relate to the ascending height of each mushroom. The shortest mushroom is 1, the tallest mushroom is 5.

      • Only the five middle mushrooms are inside the box (Pink, Blue, Grey, Orange, and White), meaning you should ignore the three mushrooms on the left (pink-orange-white) as well as the four on the right (grey-blue-orange-purple).

      • Now if you number those five mushrooms according to their height you should find the following code:

        • 2, 4, 3, 5, 1

  9. Go back once and left once. Click behind the hut to walk behind it, then go to the right side of the backyard.

  10. Click the left red mushroom with the button panel to zoom in. Use the code you just found to open the lock.

    • Remember, the code was 2, 4, 3, 5, 1. This refers to the ORDER you push the buttons in, not how many times you push them.

    • In other words, you push the buttons in the following order:

      • Far right button.

      • Far left button.

      • Middle button.

      • Inner left button.

      • Inner right button.

  11. After you put in the code, take the SHOVEL from the opened mushroom.

  12. Move left twice to reach the left side of the backyard where you'll find the three white mushrooms.

    • Use the clue we found at the middle section of the basement to figure out what to do here.

      • For this puzzle, you have to hit the white mushrooms with the HAMMER in the correct order. Note the color of the cloud that appears after you hit the mushroom.

      • According to the basement clue (if you follow the direction of the arrow) the order is:

        • Left - Middle - Right - Middle - Right - Middle.

      • Therefore, the color order of the clouds that appeared when you hit the mushrooms was:

        • Red - Blue - Yellow - Blue - Yellow - Blue.

  13. Move right once to reach the middle of the backyard.

    • Now use the clue we just discovered at the white mushrooms to solve the puzzle

      • Hit the mushrooms with the HAMMER in this order:

        • Red - Blue - Yellow - Blue - Yellow - Blue.

      • For the colorblind, the order is:

        • Middle - Right - Left - Right - Left - Right.

  14. Take the PINK AND WHITE MUSHROOM that appears on top of the blue mushroom.

  15. Walk left four times. You should now be facing the area with the hatch to the basement we visited earlier. This time, click the road ahead to walk forward.

  16. Click the pile of dirt to zoom in.

    • Use the SHOVEL on the dirt and take the BLUE BOX from the hole in the ground.

  17. Select the box in your inventory, then click the "About Item" button for a closer look.

    • Press the button panel at the center of the box. It looks like we need a four digit code to open it!

  18. Step back once and left once. Click the right road to reach the three striped mushrooms.

  19. Click the top of any of the mushrooms to view another clue:

    • The left mushroom has the number 3 in a pink and blue ring.

    • The middle mushroom has the number 7 in a blue ring.

    • The right mushroom has a number 4 in a pink ring.

      • Combine this information with the clue from the right side of the basement to discover the secret code.

      • Remember that the basement clue indicated that Pink means x2 (multiply by 2) and Blue means +3 (add three).

      • So all we need to use is a little bit of algebra! Take the number found on each mushroom then add or multiply that number, depending on the color of the rings around the number.

      • Left Striped Mushroom:

        • 3 x 2 + 3 = 9

      • Middle Striped Mushroom:

        • 7 + 3 = 10

      • Right Striped Mushroom:

        • 4 x 2 = 8.

        • So the numbers are 9, 10, 8!

        • Open the BLUE BOX and enter the code 9-1-0-8 to open the box.

    • Once the box is opened, take the KEY NECKLACE inside.

  20. Click the right striped mushroom to zoom in.

    • Use the KEY NECKLACE to unlock the door.

    • But we're too small to fit inside! Unless...

      • Remember the clue we found on the middle tier of the red mushroom in the backyard?

        • Select the PINK AND WHITE MUSHROOM in your inventory, then click the "About Item" button to zoom in.

        • Click the mushroom and press "YES" to eat it, which will cause you to shrink in size!

  21. Click the little doorway to enter the mushroom house.

  22. Click the cheese wedge to zoom in.

    • Note the swirl pattern on the side of the cheese.

  23. Move left to the other side of the room.

    • Note the color of the five lollipops beside the sleeping mouse.

  24. Go back to the right side of the room.

  25. Click the mushroom on the wall to start the puzzle.

    • Notice how the four buttons around the mushroom are the same color as the lollipops we just saw?

    • The way to solve this puzzle is to point the mushrooms at the dots in the correct order, using the left and right arrow buttons.

    • From left to right, the lollipop colors were:

      • Lime Green, Blue, Dark Green, Blue, Pink.

    • But! You can't just turn the mushroom any which way. You also have to use the clue we found on the side of the cheese wedge.

      • A swirl to the right means you must rotate the mushroom clockwise with the right arrow button. A swirl to the left means turn the mushroom counter-clockwise with the left arrow button.

      • So that means the entire cheese clue is:

        • Turn Right, turn Right, turn Left, turn Left, turn Right.

      • Now you've got all the necessary information, all that's left is to start turning:

      • Turn the mushroom RIGHT to the Lime Green circle.

      • Turn the mushroom RIGHT to the Blue circle.

      • Turn the mushroom LEFT to the Dark Green circle.

      • Turn the mushroom LEFT to the Blue circle.

      • Turn the mushroom RIGHT to the Pink circle.

  26. After the puzzle is complete, pick up the MUSHROOM BUTTON leaning against the wall.

  27. Move back twice, right twice, and forward once to return to the riverside.

  28. Click the small panel beside the path to zoom in.

    • Insert the MUSHROOM BUTTON in the matching space on the panel.

    • Click the "PUSH" button to reveal the stone bridge.

  29. Use the stones to cross the river. Wake up the DOG and click to add it to your inventory.

    • Consider the last clue from the red tiered mushroom in the backyard. It tells us how to use the dog!

      • Walk to an open area along the road. Select the DOG, then click anywhere on the screen.

      • The dog will start searching for mushrooms, but you can only find one at one specific scene...

        • Go to the middle of the road between the colored mushroom log and the striped mushrooms.

        • Set the DOG on the ground, then click the hole he digs up and take the TRUFFLE.

  30. Select the TRUFFLE in your inventory, then click "About Item" to take a closer look.

    • Open the truffle and take the GOLD KEY found inside.

  31. Move left once to return to the hut.

  32. Use the GOLD KEY to unlock the front door.

And out! Love the explicit highlighting of areas.

Coming back out of a couple places, I found you had to click directly back and then back again without moving the mouse, otherwise you'd get stuck and have to go back in and try again backing out... if that makes sense.

Otherwise well-executed, fun and original, A++ would play again.

Well, I've managed to squeeze myself into a 'shroom, and now I'm trying to do what the cheese tells me to do. Nothing works. I feel like I'm missing something. Nudge, anyone?

kurt,

the cheese does not stand alone.

there's another view of the room to the left.

the balloons complete the cheese code.

For anyone having trouble with the blue box number, as I did:

The clues are in the cellar to the right and on top of the row of three white mushrooms in which the right-hand one has a door.

The instructions are very literal: pink times 2, cyan plus 3. From left to right, the first mushroom has both a pink and a cyan ring, the second only a cyan ring, and the third only a pink ring.

Take the first one and multiply its number by 2 and add 3. Add 3 to the number on the second one. Multiply the number on the third by 2.

9108.

Mushroom with five buttons:

Is it related to the five sizes of mushrooms on the log?

I've tried that with no luck.

I've shrunk myself but think I need a key to get where little-me needs to go. Where is key?

Thanks

Reply

Is the mushroom with 5 buttons related to

the hint you find in the cellar on the left side? as in:

The sequence of letters corresponds to the colors of the mushrooms on the log,

their heights indicate a sequence of numbers, and

the letters in the box indicate the mushrooms whose numerical values are related to the 5 buttons on the mushroom on the left side of the house

Did anyone else make this connection? I think it's pretty clear but I wasn't able to figure anything out from it

@ander you're on the right path...

The numbers indicate to start with the smallest and work toward the largest, in that order

Anyone? I've gotten the

key,

but can't

get into the mushroom

and can't find

the mushroom that makes me small

. Also having trouble understanding

how white mushrooms and spotted mushrooms relate to each other. Not understanding the clue in the cellar

Reply
ander October 10, 2014 3:53 PM replied to callmerob

Now I'm really confused

does that mean press each button for the number of mushrooms at that size, i.e. the first button for every one of the really small mushrooms, the second one for every one of the next size up, etc.?
Or maybe press each button for the number of mushrooms a certain color?
Because those don't work/make sense either.

Assign a number to each size of mushroom (one being smallest), then take the section of mushrooms indicated in the cellar and push the buttons in that order.

hit the white mushrooms on the right side of the house with the hammer. Notice the different colored smoke that comes out of each one? Now hit them in the order indicated by the diagram in the cellar, which is

left, middle, right, middle, right, middle.

Remember that order & the colors of the smoke that comes out & apply that to the colored mushrooms on the screen to the right, i.e.

hit them in the order that the colored smoke came out of the white mushrooms

Bam. Shrinking mushroom.

baileydonk October 10, 2014 4:32 PM

@ninjamama - how did you get the key? Looks like someone already explained to you how to shrink.

I wonder if I already solved the five-button mushroom a long time ago and have been fruitlessly trying again... Who remembers what it gave you?

The lollipops are doing nothing?

By the way, someone definitely needs to describe them for color-blind purposes.

Okay, I'm inside the white mushroom, but the orange mushroom is driving me nuts.

I can't figure out how the balloons and the cheese swirls go together. It looks to me like I'm supposed to turn the mushroom left to point at yellow (east), left to point at blue (west), right to point at green (south), right to point at blue (west), and left to point at pink (north), but it's not working.

Hints, please?

Reply
Kyttynjirr October 10, 2014 4:51 PM replied to Shudog

Shudog,
Per your suggestion, the balloon (lollipop?) colors corroborate to the orange mushroom thus:

The first balloon color is to the right of the orange mushroom;
the second balloon color is to the left of the orange mushroom;
the third balloon color is below the bottom of the orange mushroom;
the fourth balloon color is to the left of the orange mushroom (same as the second balloon);
and the fifth balloon color is above the orange mushroom.

Hope that's clear. :)

Shudog October 10, 2014 4:54 PM replied to Kyttynjirr

Hope that helps someone, definitely. Many of these colors are really close in value, so if someone writes the walkthrough, might be something to keep in mind.

And they are lollipops. They're the size of a mouse. (is joke)

go from left to right as usual. Then...

combine with what the cheese tells you. Also from left to right.

Hey, where do you find the key for the small white mushroom ?

Reply

Still not getting in with the letters/numbers thing.

So there are five heights of mushroom, but multiples of in each height.
OW=1
PB=2
PGO=3
WBP=4
OG=5

But the cellar clue goes 'PBGOW' and there are three P's to choose from, two blues, two greys, three orange, and two whites.
POW PBGOW GBOP has all of the mushrooms in it, but not in any arrangement that makes sense to me for eliminating any in terms of where they go.

I am super confused.

Reply

@kgy121

I think you're overthinking the clues.

The cellar gives two clues. The first is what part of the log mushroom sequence to look at, as you have deciphered that's the pink-blue-gray-orange-white mushrooms in the middle of the sequence.
The second clue is the value assigned to each mushroom height, 1=shortest, etc.

If you need a further nudge

take the height ranking and go look at just the PBGOW sequence of the log mushrooms. Going from left-to-right write down the corresponding height value for each color.

Using the two clues together with the log mushrooms gives you an order for the 5-button puzzle.

Hopefully this helps and doesn't confuse you more!

Okay, I tried it again, except that this time

instead of turning the orange mushroom the way I thought the swirlies on the cheese indicated, I turned it the opposite direction. I guess the game creator meant for the direction to be viewed as going from the outside of the swirly in, if that makes any sense.

So, yeah, finally got it. >->

I tried using the code just as you said but it doesn't work.

From the log I got the code:

24351

Is that correct?

I found this on my own too, but it didn't work so I came here. And still doesn't workㅜㅜ.

Reply

I've been getting frustrated by the same issue that you're having, jayisgamed, but I just realised:

Don't label the buttons 1 to 5 from left to right, but instead label the buttons in the order of the clue. That is, the correct sequence isn't second from the left, then fourth from the left, etc., but actually starts with the rightmost button, then the leftmost button, then the middle button, and so on.

Oh I see, thank you. :) It's the same pattern, but there are two ways of viewing it. Maybe it depends if you are left- or right-brained, haha.
