Gatamari Escape 26 - PortraitsWe're in the second half of July, and it's just the first one this year. But it's easy to forgive, because Escape 26 is almost as huge as Robamimi's monumental Gargoyles, and I think the most difficult one in 2016. We have to gather all of our mental strength to get through the puzzles. To tell the truth, I haven't managed to solve all the riddles by myself, but I'm a stupidly unpatient person, and You probably will be able to get out the room(s).

As usual Gatamari works with clean, minimalist visual style, so everything you see has a function. You can save the game if you got stuck, and I must draw your attention to an important novelty: the waiting button. You can accelerate time's moving with this option, if you feel it necessary (certainly you will).
Gatamari used to make two endings, but in this case I've found only one exit. However a very long trip getting there, and along the way many scientists, and other great persons from history will challenge you. So be attentive, clever, and more patient than me!

Great game, some nasty puzzles.

Like you, I prefer to play (yes, I even played games like Quake in godmode ;) ) so unfortunately I didnt succeed reaching the end without some clues. But nevertheless, enjoyed the difficult puzzles.

Where are you getting hints from? I've used the first four inventory items, and I think I have the code for the safe, but I can't get it to work (I've even tried it upside down and backwards).

A few hints. Not a full walkthrough, just some things that I got stuck on.

To get upstairs

The piano keys are for the black/white puzzle. That gives the key for the "elevator" buttons on the north side. We have to press each elevator button after we solve the puzzle that enables it.

The red/green hand

There's no way to make it stay on (green).

But keeping it on for a while (hit the Waiting button) has an effect on something.

The light bulbs below. Touch them all to see which ones got hot.

Numbers below light upstairs

Use with the microwave dial to get the order for the pink petals.

Don't forget to place the panel thing under the pink petals.

Where to use the key after using the water in the jug

There's a puzzle on the floor downstairs

The horses

Look at their feet.

Use the order of the horses, so 4 1 3 ...

After placing the apple

Aim the valve above the water/steam box down. That will activate the buttons on the gear/apple box.

Clock dials

I thought this was a very cool puzzle. The squares in the clue behind Newton aren't complete squares.

They indicate which clock picture to use.

The lines indicate where to place a mirror

to get a letter.

I think I might be near the end;

I'm in the subbasement, looking at a portrait of Napoleon, and need a 4-digit code. I've used every item from my inventory, and have an 8-digit number from the back of the book upstairs.

No idea where how to solve this one - anybody got a hint?

For the Napoleon puzzle:

You have to combine the eight numbers with the letters in "Napoleon".

Each letter corresponds to a number. The first letter (N), means the first number in the 8-digit number.

You need a 4-letter word, which you then can "translate" to a 4-digit number. The only letters you can use are in "Napoleon".

What do you want the door to do?

The word is "OPEN".

Thank you, Questioner! Got out ^_^

Also, thanks to barbara for the hints, which got me unstuck a few times.

For those stuck near the end, with the

4 portraits:

look at the bins in the corners of the main room

what might go in them?

the apple rind and the paper

are trash and burnable, respectively

notice the shapes?

letters

N and S

cardinal directions

now what do you notice about the photos already up, and the photos you've got?

all the names

start with N,S,E, or W

and the walls are half way between each cardinal point

take the first letters of each name. Place portraits so that they read NE, NW, SE, and SW at the appropriate wall

This was a fantastic escape! Anyone else notice

The puzzles are "themed" to the portraits they reveal: on the ground floor, Schubert's clue is the piano, Edison's is the light bulbs, the dial for Washington's code has a star, which I guess means the American flag, and ... I don't really know much about Nietzsche, but I think he talked about an "eye of knowledge" or something? In the basement, you get the Aristotle portrait through buoyancy, the Newton one by dropping an apple, the Watt one through steam power, and obviously the Einstein one with E=MC2. Neat!

I don't even know where to start. I can't find a single inventory item, and the only code I've found is

the one on the back cover of the book.

I'm completely out of ideas. Hints plz?
