Habla Kadabla

Starchild The world is full of wicked witches. If they aren't luring kids into their tooth-rotting candy houses, they are tangling your earphones or hiding your socks (you know witchcraft is the only logical explanation). So when a good witch comes along, you feel obliged to encourage her law-abiding ways, which is why you will help her find a solution to her current predicament. You see, in Habla Kadabla, the newest point-and-click adventure from Carmel Games, the title character is a young sorcerer who owns a nice little ghoulish gift shop. One night, some dastardly blackguard steals her enchanted cash register along with all her money. Habla must find the thief before she goes out of business, or else she just might be forced to start cursing people for a living.

Habla Kadabla Use your mouse to interact with the townsfolk and to click on anything that looks useful. The gameplay is as straightforward as can be – visit the few locations listed on your map, snoop around, pick up items and use them on different objects around town. The cursor changes when you mouse over a clickable item, which is a great help, and the sharp, pleasing graphics make the hunt easier. The story is appropriately nutty, as are Habla's investigative methods, but it all works in its magicky setting and makes for a charming game. Habla Kadabla is quite short and nicely intuitive, so it could be a great first experience for players who are unfamiliar with the genre. That's not to say that it won't please the seasoned audience; it can easily be finished in one sitting, but it's good, clean fun, with its cartoonish sense of humour and goofy logic. So, if you have a bit of time for a round of point-and-clicking, and especially if you can't wait for Halloween, this is a game for you.

I think the walkthrough should say

Use the key on the trapdoor on the floor of the tent

Voice acting is... not exactly the best. :/

If the guy guarding the museum had been the voice of all of them, I would have been happy.

For some reason she reminds me of Peppermint Patty. For that reason, I like her! These games always have a nerdy awkward cheerfulness that manages to charm me even when they teeter over the nonsensical weirdness border.

Once I was in the museum I couldn't leave. I got to the part where

you collect the witchcraft ingredients

but from that page there was no way to leave the screen? Other pages all had arrows at the side of the screen, this one did not.

I thought the voice acting had a naive charm, actually.

That said, though...

Attributing the shrunken heads in Habla's shop to "a real voodoo priest" is... problematic, to say the least. Vodou (in Haiti and other areas of the Caribbean) and Vodoun (in West Africa) are two real religions, followed by hundreds of thousands of people, and there were quite enough erroneous stereotypes about "voodoo" and its practitioners before this game added to the problem.

(Shrunken heads were a real thing, but not one ever associated with Vodou/n, or even practiced in the same part of the world: the only authentic practitioners of head-shrinking were tribes native to the far northwest of the Amazon rainforest, in parts of what are now Ecuador and Peru, which are on the opposite side of South America from the Caribbean.)

Then there's the fact that the only character -- out of eight --

who isn't White is the villain. Only Noa has dark skin and nappy hair. And she's a charlatan on top of being a thief, apparently?

And out of the three female characters, Noa's the only one who has a curvaceous figure and shows cleavage (whereas our heroine Habla doesn't seem to have any secondary sexual characteristics at all)?

"Watch out for those Brown women! Especially if they're sexy! (Or is that sexy women, especially if they're Brown...?) They're no good at anything except lying, cheating and stealing!"

This was a generally cute game with a difficulty level well-suited to kids... but the (hopefully inadvertent!) messages its character designs send make it utterly inappropriate for children, unless presented by an adult willing and able to help them understand the problematic stereotypes.

(Note: I only played the English version of the game, as my grasp of Spanish isn't sufficient for review purposes. As nice as it is to see designers include other-language versions of their games? When the kind of casually-racist and -sexist content seen in this game is present, that makes it almost worse that the game is accessible to kids who might not understand English as well as Spanish, or who might play one version or the other as a means of improving their bilingual abilities.)
