This week, Link Dump Friday brings you the silly and the spiritual, the pink-haired alien babes and the sun with teeth made out of corn. In some countries, such a gift is an indication of deepest respect and affection. A token of undying loyalty and devotion that speaks of the depth of such feeling statues would weep to hear of it. Here at Jay is Games it just means the internet is weird and I think you're twisted enough to fit right in.
- Wayfinder Episode One - This first installment in a fully voice acted science-fiction point-and-click RPG series from Hyptosis is pretty impressive. Unfortunately, it can be a little slow to get rolling, and does feature a bit of pixel hunting. I am also somewhat nervous about this one, because everything I learned about multicolour alien ladies I learned from Captain Kirk. Which makes this... a little awkward.
- Isora and Muku - An oldie but a goodie by your friend and mine, On of Eyezmaze, this is a simple mouse-controlled game where you control a magic flying girl trying to protect a strolling... uh... animal from attacking rocks and other pitfalls by flying into them yourself. Sounds logical to me. A single hit to the little critter ends the game, but by freeing animals trapped in stone you can earn continues. It takes a long while to really get started, but once it does, managing all the obstacles flying at your oblivious charge can be frustrating. No wonder everybody hates moles. Or mole children. Or... whatever is happening here.
- Great Dungeon in the Sky - A platformer (sort of) roguelike (sort of) with approximately umpteen million different characters to unlock, Great Dungeon in the Sky is a Flixel creation without a lot of meat to it beyond "run around a whole bunch and try not to get hit, although you probably will". Gamers who like the thrill they get from unlocking female Drow rogues will enjoy this, but I, for one, am more skeptical. I mean, you'd have to at least allow me to play a yeti thief before I... oh, they have that, too? Oh dear, there goes my free time.
- Before the Law - If you have trouble convincing friends that you're "like, deep and junk?" the solution has arrived in Brandon Brizzi's short, interactive interpretation of the Franz Kafka tale. Played with the [arrow] keys, it won't take you more than five minutes to finish, although I have to say this is a pretty unrealistic game since, as you well know, I AM THE LAW! Now, of course, I'm left wondering when someone is going to turn my favourite Kafka tale, The Metamorphosis, into a game. That's good wholesome fun for everyone!
- Uncle's Old Times - Minoto's latest point-and-click features Ronald McDonald playing baseball, a seriously terrifying sun, and... Albert Wesker with a dye job? Hmmm. Sounds about right to me. You know, I don't think I even have to bother describing Minoto's games to you anymore, because no matter what I say, it could never quite capture how weird it is to make a drink out of the sun's teeth. There's only one ending this time, and I think it makes even less sense than usual.
Great Dungeon in the Sky looks incredibly promising, with all those character...how many are there? 60+?
"Ball that was placed in nest for squirrels enjoyment."!?
Great dungeon in the sky is fun! The first archer is hax, in my opinion. So far, that is the most reliably good character for me...anybody have other opinions? There are some weird ones, like the bird one.
Best part about great dungeon, the Purple Elemental. By which I mean worst part. Slow, unpredictable health, purple box? I don't even know what sort of god purpleness falls under.
The job of being a sun apparently does not inlude dental. However, it does include corn.
I like the necromancer. Goos spark attack, and can heal.
Triclops Warrior (6th row, 6th from the right), no contest. Three Hand Technique does 24 damage with each hit, and hits multiple times. You can plow through several enemies at once. Then, just Heal Wounds as much as you need to. I have yet to even come close to dying once with him.
Woah, Nicol Balas is just unfair! It can fly, has 100 hp and does massive damage.
Triclops warrior is good, but birdman tribe leader is op. Staff is probably the best dps ability because of its short cooldown, plus he can fly. I haven't seen this Nicol Balas thing yet.
I wound up using the necromancer until I beat the wind dragon thing.
Got the blue egg.
used the blue egg, upgraded to the wind dragon.
Flying. 100 HP. and monster summon. they can't touch you, and can drop monster bombs on you.
That's not Wesker, that's Neo. >_>
Uncle's Old Times...
Heh! "Bent by ESP Person" - I guess Minoto is referring to Uri Geller :)
Didn't quite get (nothing unusual) 'Before The Law'.
Only managed two endings.
For Wayfinder, I also learned everything about heterochromatic alien females from Capt. James T. Kirk, so this is actually a huge plus for me.
HUGE NOTE FOR THIS:
You only get one shot to read the security code! WRITE IT DOWN WHEN YOU SEE IT!
That being said, it's a fairly easy game, just go back and forth in the caverns, slowly earning money, and then buy lots (8-10) shields just before going to the last boss, and you should be fine, even without grenades.
In Great Dungeon in the Sky, I like the Thunder Dragon. It can fly, it has 100 HP, and its Shock attack is long range, bounces off walls, does 16 damage per hit, and can be fired around twice per second.
Just as a warning, there's a small amount of vulgar language present in the character names. Specifically, the character in the second column from the left, on the twelfth row down.
Oh, actually, I think Shock does 10 damage per hit, not 16.
Anyone else having trouble getting the red dragon on the dungeon? my red drake up grades into a wind dragon
In Great Dungeon in the Sky, probably the most difficult character to unlock is The Invisible Man.
If you play enough, you will become somewhat familiar with the various "levels" and the enemy placement in them.
This helps in finding The Invisible Man, as if you see no enemy where you expect one to be, then chances are it's him.
In terms of gameplay, GDITS is enjoyable with a few areas that could be improved upon, in my opinion.
I also think invisibility should at least let you see yourself if you are the one to cast it... As it is, you have a difficulty time telling where you are when you cast it.
I also think it somewhat tedious to try to unlock everything. Either extra unlocks should be granted for completing "special" levels, or the ones you don't have should be given higher chances of appearing as you unlock more.
Finally, a strange bug occured for me when unlocking the dragons.
The Thunder, Poison, and Wind dragons leveled up just fine. But when I tried doing the same for the Fire Drake, it turned into a Wind dragon...
I was having great fun with Great Dungeon in the Sky until I got to some point where there's apparently two villains that can paralyze me. Neither of them are attacking me so I can die, and I am totally immobile so I can't move on, either. There's no way to exit a level from the Pause menu so I'm just sitting here. And I was all excited because I just unlocked like five things. I wonder if this is a glitch or if it's really the result of paralysis?
Thankfully refreshing the browser worked and it saved my progress, including the things I unlocked in the broken level.
Yeah, I had the same bug with the red drake turning into the wind dragon. To unlock the fire dragon, I used the free unlock that I got by beating the game.
I preferred flying characters with quick fire rates, so I started with the frozen skull (one of the first characters I unlocked), then switched to the beholder, then finally the thunder dragon, who I stuck with for the rest of the game.
The bottom row seems to be the spot for the rarest characters. I saw Tim (presumably from Braid; he can paralyze enemies). Who else is there?
For some reason in great dungeon in the sky, on the level select I can't select a level, the mouse disappears and the enter button doesn't work.
Talking about ways to make it necessary to refresh your browser when playing GDITS...
Facing any of the bosses as a cube of red/purple/green makes it impossible to complete the battle, as your attack will simply change it into a cube as well. Since it causes no damage, and there isn't an exit warp available, you're stuck.
Oh, they updated GDITS. Though I'm guessing the "bonus" was meant to be satirical. One of the new levels does allow you to kill a "final boss" type enemy so that saves a lot of effort if you're lucky enough to get it.
Some things to take note of:
killing the final boss (it's a random 2x2 non dragon) gives you 1 free unlock which to use. There's about 30 possible final bosses.
There are over THREE HUNDRED characters to choose from.
Levels of the same layout tend to have mostly the same monsters. Each spot has a pool of possible monsters for it to be, but they are generally all one race/type.
Sometimes the game gets frozen if you "uncover" a room past the edge.
Get a flying unit as fast as possible to make your progress go much faster and reach some places for exclusive characters (mostly silly chars and cameos). Before dragons, birdman leader is probably the best. Flies are oddly decent.
JIGuest: You do not use the mouse in the game. Use the arrow keys to select the level and "X" to begin the level (sometimes I had to hit "X" twice).
I'm curious if there's anything to the ending of Isora and Muku.
I finished with no continues left (whew) and I'm curious if your remaining continues might be shown in the house at the end. I'd have more continues, but I kept accidentally nudging the little fellow back into a hole he'd just crossed when I came out of it.
Answer to my own question on Isora and Muku:
Yes, apparently unused continues manifest in some form in the final house.
Sky dungeon doesn't work...... Nothing appears.... It's just blank...
Love GDITS! I myself think it might be review-worthy. I love the Necromancers, their minions are super-strong, they have decent spell casting, and healing.
Great Dungeon in the Sky made my day when
I unlocked Spelunker from Spelunky! I love Spelunky!
Sky Dungeon did the same thing to me, and then I refreshed the page, and it worked. What is up with the fire dragon? I keep getting Wind too.
Is it just me, or is Pogo in The Wayfairers voiced by Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons?
Woooo! At last got ALL characters in GDITS.
I had to finish the game 6 or 7 times though.. :S
and nothing happend at all when i got them all, so now I feel a bit stupid :| I guess I'll have to finish the game once again to get a different message...
For those who are trying to get them all:
when you get an "unlock" after finishing the game use it for the characters in the 2 final rows, they are the hardest to get. The "Big" ones (the ones that ocupy 4 or 2 spaces) are really easy to get in a particular stage (upper right part of screen) or in the final battle.
There's a 5th dragon: Platinum Dragon. It's best you unlock first the egg. White egg: to the right of the Blue egg
Some Characters are very difficult to find, mainly because they change form before you kill them. These are: Vampire, Vampire King, Shapeshifter.
Try to attack them while you are in the air without landing or they'll notice you and change form.
I really think some characters are impossible to get unless you unlock them manually. After all the playing I haven't seen some of them ever, even after unlocking them. In my case these were the impossible characters:
Blue Squad SWAT (3rd row starting from the bottom, 3rd to the right)
The Invisible Man (last row, 11th from the left)
Dire Baby (2nd last row, 9th to the left)
Best characters in the game:
Thunder Dragon: Fast reload. 10 hit, Fly.
Demon: One-hit kill with Fire Breath. Fly.
Birdman Tribe Leader: Staff: 8x2 hit to all enemies in range. Fast reload. Fly
Ah! One last thing. It's a pity there isn't a
character that can fly, heal and has a fast reload... :)
Thanks for the post reimon! I'll mention that I found dire baby, he was in the same spot as the red/blue/etc. knights, in the one level where you have to fly up to the small rock platform.
I really like Isora & Muku but I always have problem when I have to put the main character in the pitt to create a bridge... She does not stay in it because the "mole" are coming... It's a bit annoying
In GDITS Stonegazer easily beats any enemy, no need to change characters afte it is unlocked except for novelty.
Well, great. Thanks to you and GDitS, I now have what is probably carpal tunnel. I hope you're happy. (Joke!) To the makers: Stop making such addicting games! I get all addicted and stuff. Soo... many... characters...
Lol. Citrus Elemental.
For the GDitS, it would be awesome to have editable buttons. My qwert-!z! layout (not to mention my left-handyness) makes it unnecessery hard to play..
I apparently found the best enemy ever in GDITS. It changed into a white block and crashed the game. That was fun up to a point, but I don't really feel like finding every creature, especially when they're so hard to tell apart while playing.
Also, Hi-res mode made everything extremely blurry, as if I was drunk. Probably a Mac-Flash-performance thing.
Why is Uncle so proud that he got a 0 on his term paper?
Interesting fact: The blueberry eating toucan in Great dungeon in the sky is the main character in "blueberry garden".
Your reviews always bring a smile to my face. Or at the very least, a heavily sardonic smirk. :D
And that's not Albert Wesker. That's Neo!
Hence the whole thing with the spoon.
@Redhairsword:
I ALREADY MENTIONED THAT! D:
Kangra:
If you take the tray instead of the soup, he gets a 100.
GDitS is awesomely clever and pointless at the same time. I like that you can play it in tiny chunks while, say, not grading logic exams. But there's some other ways to get stuck -- if you pick a slow character for a level with a bottomless pit, you can't clear the pit, and you have to refresh the browser. It might be a good idea to include a "quit back to level select" option.
And the best part is definitely playing as the different creatures. I hope to see a video of someone beating the whole game as cuccoo.
reimon-
Invisible guy, dire baby, and a lot of cameos all can be found in the cave map with the long shaft down in the beginning. You need to fly to the top of the big cavern (not the beginning one) and there'll be a small bowl with a single enemy. If you don't see anyone, then it's the invisible person.
There are 314 playable creatures in this game.
My favorite one is the chicksnakentiger; the slash attack is great against multiple enemies.
However, I can't find the first two animals by all means. Where are they?
My favorite character is by far the Master Baker. Any game where you can 'attack' by tossing a loaf of bread in a high arc - for 1 damage - is excellent in my book.
Stab stabstab stab stabstabstab stab - Breaaaaad!
"Great Dungeon in the Sky" is using all character graphics from the multiplayer flash game "Realm of the mad god", which is made by Wild Shadow studios... not Flixel. I wonder if there is copyright infringement going on.
@ GDitS: For everyone asking for the "quit current level" option - there is one. You don't have to refresh browser everytime you fall in pit or get frozen forever. Just press ESC and choose wheter you want to Return to Menu or Return to Characters. Yes, it's THAT easy :D
Tsuken: According to the comments on Great Dungeon over at Rock Paper Shotgun, Realm of the Mad God and Great Dungeon are both drawing on a set of sprites that has been made available under a Creative Commons license. So (assuming they're right) there's no infringement or unauthorized copying -- just authorized use of some art that was made to be used like this.
gASK -- thanks!
why in GDIS does naija's potion attack crash the game? also do you get anything for unlocking all the characters?
Finally finished Isora & Muku with all of my continues left. The ending's purty. :3
Auggh! I just played that game like 4 times, and there's not even anything good! I am talking about GDitS. I finally unlocked EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER, and
There's not even anything different from every other ending! Just the same message as whenever else I beat the final "boss"!
Did anybody else get anything different?
Help! I keep falling back into the Great Dungeon in the Sky!
I feel really wasted now that I have all 314. Curse you JayIsGames!
HD mode must be some kind of joke, right?
in GDItS, whenever I kill a certain monster, the game freezes, and I have to refresh. I believe it is one of the cameo characters, for it only appears in a certain spot on only one stage. Is anyone else encountering this problem? If it matters, I am using one of the (if not the) most recent versions of Firefox.
