Sometimes the world just knows when a person is in need of just the right mixture of point-and-click adventure, Dr. Seuss, Salad Fingers, Liquid Television, and the dreams you get after eating too many tacos. And when that happens, the world provides. Or at least DrawManEater does, with the release of the objectively-surreal Nekra Psaria 4. At the end of Nekra Psaria 3, Johnny-Boy had just returned home to his humble abode after a long and winding adventure. Unfortunately, it seems that there is no rest for the weary, even when it seems that the whole world has hunkered down for a long nap. After all: you've got a roach problem to solve.
Gameplay will feel familiar to those who've played other installments in the series. Your cursor will change when it passes over something you can interact with, whether it's something that can be picked up, examined closer, or indicating movement to a different area. Oftentimes the areas itself will be highlighted in-game (which is useful for navigating in such a weird world.) When you want to use an item, click on it in the screen you want to use it and, if it is applicable, it will be automatically used. (You may need to click and look closer to use some item: the game is very particular at which screens items can be used.) Nekra Psaria 4 is a little more aimless than its predecessors, meaning those who are new to the adventures of Johnny-Boy should probably play earlier installments first, should they be confused. (Of course, even those people who HAVE played earlier installments may be confused. It's that kind of game.) But the appeal of the Nekra Psaria series has always been its disconcerting and ghoulish scenery and puzzles that give a large dose of surreality, and Nekra Psaria 4 certainly is no slouch on that score. It was particularly cool to see how some of the locations that were first seen in the first game have been given a kind of a face-lift when you revisit them. Of course, said face-lift usually involves them being made at least 150% more twisted, but it's a nice touch. In short: the world of Nekra Psaria is beautiful in it's ugliness, and Nekra Psaria 4 offers you a chance to spend another 20 minutes there. I suggest booking your ticket now.
