JaySecret NumbersTonypa is back with a new puzzle game and this one will surely give your grey matter a work out. In the spirit of Web-based riddle games, Tercessrebmun (or Secret Numbers) is a Flash game in which you must figure out the password for each of the game's 30 levels. Each level presents a series of characters from which you must derive meaning and clues that point to a single numeric answer. Enter your answer in the space provided (by replacing the "CODE?" text) using positive integers only and no other symbols. Some are straightforward and some are definitely not, but all solutions can be derived using logic and ingenuity. Wikipedia may even help with a few of them.

This game is best played in small groups of people, like the one we had in the site's IRC channel over the weekend as we worked through most of the levels in the game. Tony even showed up to give us a few helpful hints as we played, so don't be afraid to ask for a hint or two in the comments! Or come visit our IRC channel for some real-time assistance!

Hands, faces and directions?

Do you have time for this?

And waiting backwards?

Solution:

The first two lines refer to the hands of a clock and the directions they face at a given time

Long hand up. Small hand east. 3 o'clock.

The last line tells you to Wait a dozen times a dozen minutes from then, only backwards. So go back 144 minutes from 3 o'clock. 12:36, or 1236

22-30

Game Clue:

PAYBR CTDIE RFMGI HEI HJNKT LUMRN MOEPB

Hints:

Take the clue alphabetically

The thirtieth prime number is 113.

23-30

Game Clue:

UJDLTUPOFXEBZ - 1

From everything?

Solution:

Take each letter in the clue back one.

TICKSTONEWDAY, or the Ticks until a new day(midnight).

Hints:

Some numbers aren't what they seem

If a number isn't a number, then maybe it's just separating others.

Or even telling you how big the separation is?

Maybe this is like a previous question

What's the key here?

or perhaps keys... again.

Solution:

Most of the 2's and 3's are delimiters of ASCII identifiers. The Code is 53-49-50-45-99-111-115-40-50-42-112-105-41

512-cos(2*pi) = 512-1 = 511

Solution:

...- .. ...- .- .-.. -..
.-- .-. --- - .
..-. --- ..-
... . .- ... --- -. ...

Vivaldi Wrote Four Seasons

HELLO
66-504-372-968-46-423-968

Hints:

Where do you find Hello, and numbers?

Still having trouble? Want to use a lifeline? Phone a friend perhaps?

Not in this country, though.

Solution:

The numbers are international telephone country codes.

The country id's are TH-HN-EE-OM-SE-LI-OM

The first letters are THEOSLO

But Norway (Oslo) isn't the right code.

But there is a country called Lesotho.

The country code of Lesotho is 266.

NiNetyNiNe miNus oNe (6)
seveN aNd teN (3)
NiNeteeN miNus seveNteeN (6)

The answer is 636

28-30

Game Clue:

WHERE -II

Hints:

Where? Where what?!

What does II mean?

Where are the 2s?

In each number?

Solution:

In 421, the 2 is in position 2. In 247 the 2 is in position 1. In 61, there is no 2, so 0. Continue like that.
The sequence is 21102303.

29-30

Game Clue:

THE JULY SUN CAUSED
A FRAGMENT OF BLACK MOON WAX
TO OOZE ON THE VELVET
(QUOTE 10-14)

Hints:

There's something missing from the text

Or rather two things

That aren't in 17-30's clue.

Solution:

The missing letters are P and I, or PI

Quote the 10th-14thdecimal places of pi

30-30

Game Clue:

EIGHT BLIND MICE
UL. DLDLULU. RUL. DLD. RD.
XAXXXXBXXXXXCXDXEFXGXXXXXXXHXIJX
XKLMXXXXXXXNOPRXSXTUXXXXVXXXXWY.

Hints:

See how they run.

With 64 letters in the last two lines, including the period.

Or, thanks to the clue, should I say 8x8?

An 8x8 maze for the mice to run in?

So what's the second line then?

Up Down Left Right?

Don't forget the mice are blind

Solution:

Running the mice with each instruction until they hit a wall/letter, starting from the period, you get B E A S T

How do you represent Beast as a number?

Or perhaps the Number of the Beast? The answer is 666.

4:

just read it backwards, and it says "one less than a hundred" or: 99

5:

for this one, i just figured out how many tuesdays there were in each month and then multiplied that by the number of months in a year to get: 48

6:

a bit trickier, the first letter of each word spells out MMVIII, or, in roman numerals: 2008

i'm really stuck on level seven though

Sorry, bioLarzen, my bad using the word "necessary". The hint was only necessary for *us* to proceed. Your mileage may vary. ;)

Reply

sloth - you're on the right track, but

there's more to a 'date' than just the year. ;)

Reply

an add on to sloth,

He died on june tenth, 6/10

Reply

Anyone knows what those ranges bottom right of each level (like "6-30" for level 6 for example) mean? I thought the code lies within that range but with level 6 it became clear that it is not so... But then what is it?

Reply

Ben - actually, that's not likely to help sloth. xD

bioLarzen - "6-30" means level 6 out of 30.

Reply

@ bioLarzen:

It's the level that you're on out of 30.

Reply

Oh, fool me... Of course they mean "actual level/total number of levels"

I thought they are kind of range because they are placed directly under "Hints and spoilers" - of course I thought it's kind of a hint...

Maybe that would be useful to make it clearer, Tony - if you're reading this.

I like the game a lot altho probably im not gonna get too far since im playing alone.

Reply

bioLarzen, I believe that's the current level (6, in your case) followed by the total number of levels (30).

Reply

It stands for level 6 out of 30 or whatever you are on

Jay,
my mileage is rather "incheage" :)))

This is a general question:

Do any of the answers use a decimal?

I know Tonypa made it to where you cant type in any letters besides the ones in "CODE?", but it is possible to type a period/decimal.

PS im stuck on 10, I see "PI" 3.14... and "and a no" and a number...
but the arent seeming to help.

Reply

12: Samuel Finley Breese ... could help you with that, if he was still alive... ;)

Reply

I finally figured out number 10!!

It means keys as in "Keyboard" And you can also see in the text that there is the word "Piano".
The keyboard of the piano. How many keys are on the keyboard? 88. The answer is 88 ^^

Reply

does twelve have anything to with what daniel said and that you can type periods and dashes as well as normal numbers?

Reply

On Level 12: well, if you...

take the first symbol, dot or dash, of each of the nine words in Morse code, you get .-...-.--, which is Morse code for LAW, which is Dewey Decimal 340 in the library.

So the answer is 340, except that of course it isn't. I'd already thought of the Samuel Finley Breeze thing, but it wasn't obvious what to do with that...

I mentioned in the review above that all answers are "positive integers only and (include) no other symbols."

The Great Dane December 3, 2007 7:45 PM

I'm also stuck on 12.
So the dots are "."? But what about the dashes? It should be obvious, but I'm a bit slow today.

Reply

Unfortunately, geniusadvice, a lot of things can be.

Vowels/Consonants. Words/periods. Short words / long words. Short vowels / long vowels...and that one's promising, because that makes the middle line ..-. . . -, which spells FEET. But the other lines come out as gibberish.

Reply

You really have to be willing to be creative, ingenious even, when thinking of ways to solve these puzzles.

For 12:

the dots are obvious, yes, and can you see anything at all in the text that could represent dashes?

ok for number 12 i feel really off...

i found a morse code translator and put in the whole thing and got
.. / ..-. .. -. -.. / .. -. / .-.. .. -... .-. .- .-. -.-- .-.-.- / .. .-.. .-.. ..- ... - .-. .- - . -.. .-.-.- / -... --- --- -.- ... .-.-.- / .-- --- .-. -- ... .-.-.- / . .- - .-.-.- / .--. .- --. . ... .-.-.- / -. ..- -- -... . .-. ... .-.-.- / ... --- ... .-.-.- / -.. ..- ... - .-.-.- / -.-. .... .- .. .-.
which i'm assuming is way off
also if the periods are the dots...then the spaces could be the dashes? even with that knowledge i'm completely stumped on how to turn that into something with the dewey dec. system

Bah help me

Reply

Teal,

forget the Dewey decimal system. Focus on where the dashes are in the text.

Reply

13 - still working on this one, but maybe this will help

each line has three sets of nine digits, none of which is repeated within each set

this gave me replacements for the missing numbers, (though not necessarily the order) but they didn't appear to work. after that, i am stuck.
possibly even less relevant

this would make the bottom "283" which is a prime number

Reply

i'm still feeling like i'm really missing something...it's like on the tip of my brain but i just can't think of it

if the spaces are the dashes...then i just get a crap load of a's or n's ...

Have another hint for Level 13, ThemePark or anyone else?

Reply

For number 13:

benfunke is on the right track.

1.

each line has three sets of nine digits, none of which is repeated within each set

2.

notice that the answer box accepts a maximum of 20 characters. This means that you can't type in the entire "middle row"

3.

"middle" is the key concept here

level 12: (Warning:major spoiler)

take the "i" for dash.

On #22: I've got

The whole "Prime Number Thirty" thing.

It seems pretty apparent that it's not

anything to do with the prime number in the thirties, hence the singular thirty.

This leads me to believe that

it means the thirtIETH prime, which if my math is right is 101

, but that's not working either. Any insights?

Seeing as 30 could be still trouble, here are some more hints:

You dont have to convert mice word to numbers, the hint in there was mICE, meaning slippery ground.

Now if the blind mouse would move in the maze, it would probably bump into walls.

All letters except X are counted as walls.

Move until there is dot in instructions, then read the last letter you hit.

Reply

I was just about to write and say that with those hints it still didn't work, when something dawned on me.

The period counts as a wall too, even though you start on it.

So with that in mind, I finally got through the game. :D

#30: what am I missing?!
I'm failing at the very last step. I followed all hints given and get 4 letters (two of which are the same) and no fifth letter (or as I did: define the starting '.' as a valid result).

Concretely, I get as a result:

BEBU.

with that:

I tried all year-numbers (birth, death, disco hit) of the argentinian composer (to no avail) and there is also a romanian river by that name (which leaves me completely clueless)... There seems to be no anagram either...

To make the confusion perfect:

It seems to me, that there are a few obsolete moving instructions having the mouse bumping into the maze's "boundary-walls" just for fun. Or is the mouse supposed to do some "pacman-warping-thing" appearing at the opposite side of the maze?!

*sigh*, please kindly guide this lost soul out of its maze...

TICKSTONEWDAY, or the Ticks until a new day(midnight).

Notice the level number: 23-30

Or 23:30, perhaps? Ticks to new day means the number of seconds in half an hour, or 30*60 = 1800

24-30

Game Clue:

N ( 99 - 1 ) & ( 7 & 10 ) & ( 19 - 17 )

Hints:

how maNy fuNctioNs are iN this oNe? 5

three iNdividual fuNctioNs, iN poiNt of fact. 4

Solution:

Count the N's in the three bracketed sections

NiNetyNiNe miNus oNe (6)
seveN aNd teN (3)
NiNeteeN miNus seveNteeN (6)

The answer is 636

25-30

Game Clue:

2532492502452993111311524025024231123105241

Hints:

Some numbers aren't what they seem

If a number isn't a number, then maybe it's just separating others.

Or even telling you how big the separation is?

Maybe this is like a previous question

What's the key here?

or perhaps keys... again.

Solution:

Most of the 2's and 3's are delimiters of ASCII identifiers. The Code is 53-49-50-45-99-111-115-40-50-42-112-105-41

512-cos(2*pi) = 512-1 = 511

26-30

Game Clue:

MDVA DG NWLI SO WORM YRL LP
LAY CAC EUU E R
HSIL OYO HJA XAK
MMX F MA KDK UIE AH PKD

Hints:

One word hints at a previous puzzle

WORM

Which appeared in 12-30

Which was about Morse Code

What could be dots and dashes?

Consonants and vowels/semivowels perhaps?

Solution:

...- .. ...- .- .-.. -..
.-- .-. --- - .
..-. --- ..-
... . .- ... --- -. ...

Vivaldi Wrote Four Seasons

The Four Seasons was written by Vivaldi in 1723

27-30

Game Clue:

HELLO
66-504-372-968-46-423-968

Hints:

Where do you find Hello, and numbers?

Still having trouble? Want to use a lifeline? Phone a friend perhaps?

Not in this country, though.

Solution:

The numbers are international telephone country codes.

The country id's are TH-HN-EE-OM-SE-LI-OM

The first letters are THEOSLO

But Norway (Oslo) isn't the right code.

But there is a country called Lesotho.

The country code of Lesotho is 266.

NiNetyNiNe miNus oNe (6)
seveN aNd teN (3)
NiNeteeN miNus seveNteeN (6)

The answer is 636

28-30

Game Clue:

421 247 253 61 721 792 89 972
WHERE -II

Hints:

Where? Where what?!

What does II mean?

Where are the 2s?

In each number?

Solution:

In 421, the 2 is in position 2. In 247 the 2 is in position 1. In 61, there is no 2, so 0. Continue like that.
The sequence is 21102303.

29-30

Game Clue:

THE JULY SUN CAUSED
A FRAGMENT OF BLACK MOON WAX
TO OOZE ON THE VELVET
(QUOTE 10-14)

Hints:

There's something missing from the text

Or rather two things

That aren't in 17-30's clue.

Solution:

The missing letters are P and I, or PI

Quote the 10th-14thdecimal places of pi

30-30

Game Clue:

EIGHT BLIND MICE
UL. DLDLULU. RUL. DLD. RD.
XAXXXXBXXXXXCXDXEFXGXXXXXXXHXIJX
XKLMXXXXXXXNOPRXSXTUXXXXVXXXXWY.

Hints:

See how they run.

With 64 letters in the last two lines, including the period.

Or, thanks to the clue, should I say 8x8?

An 8x8 maze for the mice to run in?

So what's the second line then?

Up Down Left Right?

Don't forget the mice are blind

Solution:

Running the mice with each instruction until they hit a wall/letter, starting from the period, you get B E A S T

How do you represent Beast as a number?

Or perhaps the Number of the Beast? The answer is 666.

Congrats on your new game tonypa!
I like how it is numeric/logic one side and poetry/proze at the other side. I came to level10, I probably play the rest with the walkthrough in my hand.

Wow, and I guess you exceeded the amount of comments on a game here on JIG ever, or at least in the shortest time-span.

liam - Just at the end of the review text for the game, there's a link to a full walkthrough.

It's designed in a way to give as little away as possible, so it's rather safe to use. :)

In my opinion, Tonypa ALWAYS does great games. They're always unique, creative, and force you to think outside the box.

However, that has its downside: Sometimes, like with this game, a lot of levels are really obscure in figuring out the direction to go in.
For example, Level 19

You are presented with lines of words with NO indication towards any words. Alright, the letters don't seem to jumble up into any numbers. Alright, so what is going on? Apparently, you have to figure out the last line is a command. Then you have to figure out that said command means remove certain letters from the puzzle. Now, the last part of the puzzle seems more the style of this numbers game, but it is very obscure in reaching that point.

My point is I love games that are hard enough to desire
a walkthrough and you try your best to go without one, but obscurity that forces you into a guide only makes me feel dumb.
Nevertheless, Tonypa has delivered another great time waster.
