Sphinx (2015)

Way, waaaaaaay back in the ancient annals of time known as 2012, Kotorinosu released a challenging little escape game called Sphinx. Now, apparently, it's time to revisit that classic with Sphinx (2015) (Android and iOS versions coming soon!), which keeps the Egyptian setting but provides you with an entirely new place to explore and set of puzzles to crack. There's no changing cursor, so if you want to find everything you need to interact with, you'll have to put on your Sherlock hat and scour every dusty inch of this place, and if you expect the game to give you any hints and direction, well... looks like you're going to be entombed for quite some time. This update of the original game concept strikes a solid balance between simple "use item X on space Y" style puzzles and more complex offerings that require a lot of logic and attention to detail. Whereas the original kept you facing a single direction, not counting any close up examinations, this one lets you move around a lot more, and thus feels complex in a different way. Pixel hunting isn't really an issue, but some puzzles require more thinking than others, and with some inventory items needing to be combined or used more than once, you have your work cut out for you. As of this writing, I'm unsure if this web version will vanish after a while as happened with Kotorinosu's last update of a classic and subsequent mobile release, but for the moment, it's freely available for all to attempt to unlock. B Y O Explorer Hat, and maybe give Brendan Fraser a call... he was always good with ancient temples.

Nice game. Especially with the multiple uses.

Pixel Hunt Trigger Warning:

If you find the red-brownish chest, check the lower right part of the stairs the chest is standing on.

Small typo in the review: The guy's name is Indiana Jones, not Brendan Fraser ;-)

I thought I'd got pretty far on my own but it's really NOT obvious how a lot of those puzzles are solved.

At least there's a video walkthrough (in 2 parts) for when you get stuck.

Really enjoying this game. But I'm stuck.

solved the first yin/yang puzzle, but can't do the second. Made the circular form depicted on the second panel, and tried putting the pointy pieces in to match the gold/white, or in other ways too and can't get the second panel open!

Have:

opened jar with 8 triangle design on bottom, knife used to open jar, cloth (can't wipe the spot on the wall), pickaxe (used on loose brick), extra pointy piece.

korvarthefox April 6, 2015 10:45 AM

@Snarfhead

Have you checked the "pointy pieces" in detail?

Flip the pointy pieces so they're all white, and make all the things around the yin-yang symbol white.

Snarfhead April 6, 2015 10:59 AM replied to korvarthefox

Thanks fox! I did notice that you could

flip them to white, but to change them all to white - well, I guess I'm still missing a piece then because I only have four and there are five golds on the picture. Based on what I have - any idea where I might've missed the fifth one?

Now I'm stuck :0

Have green pot, brown cloth, chain that locked the chest in the second opened room, stick, pick-axe head, ankh head, crook head, dagger/handle

I think I need to put the ankh and crook into the correct hands of the correct statue, but it seems like I can only do one at a time...

Reply
Snarfhead April 6, 2015 11:39 AM replied to korvarthefox

Exactly where you are fox.

feel like we need to find something else to complete the handle of the ankh. Can put the knife blade into either the crook or the ankh and put it in the hands once assembled, but can not put the other non-assembled on in. And what to do with the chain length that we still have?

Ha! Fox, I figured the next step! For the handles,

couple of items in your inventory can be combined to make something we frequently have to make in escape games.
Consider

on the 1st day God said, "let there be..."

Then once you have it

there's only one place dark enough to need a little light to see.

Reply

Man, this one is tough, but really good.

I have:

knife, empty jar, lit torch, chisel-looking thing I got from the dark hole in the wall

I don't know what to do about:

the hour glasses, the puzzle under the blue hour glass, how to open the chained chest

Any clues would be appreciated!

I have used the telescope thing to see through each crystal ball but cant see how they could match each room

Reply

Finally out! Super great game.

In addition to KMB's pixel hunt clue, I think its also worth noting that

you have to click and drag the cube to observe its other sides

so you can

then invert it

and obtain

the clue to the puzzle under the blue hour glass

This is the only item that acts in this way.

I found everything else to be challenging but totally solvable. 5 stars!

no i dont think thats the telescope thg, i got it from another roon after solving the puzzle in the multi colored pyramid room, do you mean the pin?

Reply
Snarfhead April 6, 2015 1:37 PM

I have to say, my computer is lagging pretty badly, so it really took some careful observation to see that

in order to solve the multi-colored pyramid, I needed to be able to discern that

there was a different amount of sand in each hourglass.

Reply
Snarfhead April 6, 2015 2:04 PM

Ha! Out! That was THOROUGHLY enjoyable. Lots of thinking and figuring - great! Two things, though:

as mentioned above, rather a bit of a challenge having to depend on my computer speed to make it clear there were different amounts of sand in the hourglasses - but a great concept! So, my own fault there.

Didn't like that I had to actually re-fold the cube to be able to solve its related puzzle. I solved it by sight without re-folding, but it wouldn't let me enter the correct sequence until I went back and re-folded it. Still, nice clue!

Thanks, Dora, for finding it and putting it up, and doing the write-up!

I think Kotorinosu must have been paying homage to Neutral's 'Vision' with

looking through the coloured marbles and then matching the creature with it's habitat.

I love Kotorinosu's games and this one certainly doesn't disappoint!

Hm... I seem to be missing something. I just finished the

The green pot, the chain, and the metal rod for blocking hourglasses.

None of them seems to be applicable to anything I can do, though? I see

The red pot, which I assume I need to get at, and the constellation painting with the numbers 1-4, which I don't see a place to enter. There's a diamond-shaped indentation that nothing I have fits?

Help. For the two statues,

I've tried every combination I can think of for the crook and ankh, including the way the sign shows them.

How do I finish this puzzle?

Reply

Littleghost - you may have made the same mistake I did initially!

Does the handle of your crook and ankh match its top part?

Specifically, the KNIFE is the handle for the crook, so the whole thing is striped. The silver handle is used for the ankh, so the whole thing is silver. Then just use the picture as reference for which hands to put them in.

Trust me, I just about slapped myself when I realised this, haha.

Deposit the black sphere.
Examine the box. Retrieve all those spheres.
Return to the exit room.
Examine the center console.
Examine the telescope.
One by one, place each sphere into the telescope and have a look.
Each sphere has an image.
Each image corresponds to one of the symbols you found in the dark.
Each symbol corresponds to the room in which you found it.
Each room corresponds to a slot in the center console.
Place the spheres in the corresponding slots.

Red sphere = Desert = Camel = First room
Green sphere = Leaves = Snail = Yellow room
Aqua blue sphere = Water = Fish = Green room
Blue sphere = Sky = Bird = Red room
Gray sphere = Rocks = Scorpion = Blue room

From top to bottom, then left, then right:

Blue sphere, Red sphere, Aqua blue sphere, Green sphere, Gray sphere

A button lights up. Push it.
Examine the pedestal. Open the box. Take the key.
Examine the back wall/door. Insert the key.

Congrats!

AAAAuuugh, you are right, I did. I noticed the difference, but I guess I assumed that I wouldn't have been able to fit them together if they were wrong. Plus, asymmetrical matching. :P

I don't know how anyone can give this less than 5. It's pretty much a perfect escape game.

I find every Kotorinosu's games AMAZING, I wish they had more games, I had already play them all and it's quite sad not to have anymore left or another similar games.
The puzzles were really interesting, and one didn't had to use a walkthrought to beat it.

You don't actually need to pixel hunt there.

If you look closely at the wall, the lines form into an arrow that points there.
