Weekday Escape

GrinnypIt's nearly Halloween, so it's time for a creepy room escape! This week's Weekday Escape is a spooky little treat by Selfdefiant called Spooky Night Escape. Just deal with it and hand over the candy before someone gets hurt.

SpookyNightEscapeMore of a point-and-click adventure disguised as an escape, Spooky Night Escape evokes the look and feel of the season with its nighttime setting, pale moon, and eerie trees. You have run out of gas somewhere on a dark, deserted road and must search the area, find some clues, solve some puzzles, and get the heck away before the inhabitants of the ominous nearby shack return. Faint navigation bars at the sides, top, and bottom of the scene lead the way while a changing cursor points out hot-spots to find useful items or puzzles. The puzzles themselves are not very tricky (and some are color based), making Spooky Night Escape a quick five or ten minute escaping pleasure.

Don't go into Spooky Night Escape expecting ghosts, ghouls, or jump-scares, because there's none of those to be found. The game merely evokes the feel of the season with its look and unearthly music clip. Think of it as a quick prelude to Halloween, something to set the mood for creepier fare yet to come, and a perfect mid-week break.

WALKTHROUGH
(with assistance for the colorblind)

Christine

You begin facing your car, which is out of gas. Note: you can't go anywhere without clicking on the car first. She wants your attention.

Go left.

You're now facing a house in the distance. There is a log to the right of the path that you can interact with.

To the left of the path is a sign. Near the bottom of the sign's post, there's a rock. Click the rock, and get the key underneath. Go forward.

You're now right in front of the house. Use the key on the door, and go in.

Cabin Fever

When you enter the house, you begin facing a colorful couch. On the table are some peanuts. Ignore those, they are useless, if tasty.

On the table to the right of the couch is a green piece of paper. Click it to move it, then take the matches from underneath. Turn right.

You're now facing a little fireplace, and another door. To the left of the fireplace is a bucket with an axe handle sticking out of it. Take the axe.

Take the fishing trophy from the top of the fireplace.

Notice that the fireplace is empty, and that there is no wood to be found inside the cabin. Also note that the keyhole on the door is black. Turn right.

You're now facing the door you came in by. There's a fishing line, a fishy bucket, and a welcome mat that says "Gone Fishing." This guy sure likes fishing. There is a basket on top of the bench. Open it and take the screw driver. Turn right.

An angry owl greets you, and another locked door, this one with a gold keyhole.

There is a locked cabinet which you need a three-digit number to open. On top of the cabinet is a phone with a three-digit number on it. Hmmm...

Use the number on the phone (625) to open the cabinet. Take the gas can, and try not to think too hard on how crazy the guy who owns this cabin would have to be to keep the combination to a lock right on top of said lock.

Turn left and leave the cabin.

Firestarter

Back up once from the cabin so you're at the sign again. Use the axe on the log, then take the half of the log from the top of the stump. Go back into the cabin.

Face the fireplace. Put the log into the fireplace, then use the matches on the log. Take the gold key that appears.

Turn so you're facing the owl painting. Use the gold key on the door with the gold keyhole. Go through the door.

The Colour out of Space

You find yourself in a little kitchen. Open the second door from the right and find a box with four colorful circles on it.

Turn around. You can open that fridge, but there isn't much in there. Go through the door and back into the living room.

Turn so you're facing the couch. Isn't it so colorful?

If you try to enter the couch colors in order from left to right into the box in the kitchen, nothing happens. There must be some other clue. Look closely at the couch. Notice the buttons?

Aha! There's a different number of buttons on each colored cushion. That means you put into the box: green, red, purple, blue.

For the colorblind: push the first button once, the second one three times, the third one zero times, and the fourth one twice.

Click the latch to the right of the colored circles to open the box. Take the black key.

Home Invasion of the Trophy Snatcher

Go back into the living room and face the fireplace. Use the black key on the door with the black keyhole.

You find yourself in a bedroom. To the left of the bed is a trapdoor, which is locked.

Time to go through this guy's stuff! Open up the drawers in the dresser. Take the duck trophy from the middle one.

Turn around.

You're facing the door you came in by. To the left of the door is some interesting modern art.

To the right of the door is a guitar case. The latch is stuck. If only you had something to pry it open with... Oh wait, you do! Use the screwdriver on it. Open up the conspicuous secret compartment and take the alligator trophy. Is there no animal this guy won't hunt?

To the left of the guitar case is a table with two drawers. The right-hand drawer contains boring papers, maybe the guy's fishing diary or something. The other drawer is stuck.

Notice that the table has three circles on it. It looks like you have to put three things there. But what do you have three of?

Trophies, of course! Put the trophies on the table in whatever order you want, then open the drawer and take the rusty key.

Underworld

Go to the trap door in the bedroom. Use the rusty key on the lock, and descend.

You're in the basement now, facing a shelving unit. Click on the red toolbox, which is locked. You need a three-symbol combination to open it. Hey, remember that modern art from upstairs? It went: triangle, star, circle. Push that into the tool box, and open it up. Take the handle. But what does the handle go to? Turn around.

There's a barrel of fuel there, but it's missing a handle. Put the handle on the barrel, then use the gas can on the barrel. You now have gas! And you didn't even have to pay those outrageous prices at the pump.

Go all the way back to your car. Use the gas can on it.

The end!

wow, too easy. 3.5 min.

Found this one super easy, which was nice for a change. Good for a short little distraction.

That was quick and easy. But still fun!

Reply

Too easy, and the style did nothing for me.

Reply

The only thing that bothered me was my sense of logic. To have objects - objects you can interact with, no less - that would serve a purpose just as well as one you're supposed to find, is a bit irritating.

Of course, thinking that much about a 5 minute game is a little nuts too.

A little short, but still rejuvenating.

Check the phone above it.

So at this point I have a handle that looks like a gear and an empty gas can...and no idea what to do with either.

Will tPoP work for me?

Apparently, it will.

There there is more than one view in the basement.

Okay, how do I get in the basement? I've got

the gas can, the screwdriver, the trophy, I've started the fire.

Alright... I'll admit it. I can't find out how the stupid

Funniest thing about this game is they present it as a spooky, halloween escape game, but in reality it was just good old break-and-enter burglary.

Reply

I suppose they can't all be gems...

JIGuest:

I know, right? And it's not even like you go into the guy's house and find out he's like a cannibal or something. He's probably just a kindly old gentleman who likes to fish. And we all just robbed him.

I noticed that not just this game but every game in the past does not enable spoiler tags. they are disabled for some reason. I hope Jay or someone can fix the issue.

[Spoiler tags are all working for me, Paul. Try emptying your browser cache and reload. Make sure you have Javascript enabled. If you still have an issue, please tell me what OS and browser versions you're using. -Jay]

Oh well. I've played some of their escape games before, but neither gameplay nor graphics seem to improve very much. I mean, what's the old "spooky" cliché of broken down car/lost cabin got to do with it? The rooms and riddles look the same.

But who am I to complain? I like feeling a bit choosy about these things, because I appreciate JIG so much for its high standards, but also because they allow game developers like these to show themselves among the best (or most picky)! Thanks for yet another weekday escape :-)

I don't know about anyone else here, but

I felt like a real jerk by the end of this. Break in to some random guy's house, loot the rooms, light an unattended fire, leave every door unlocked, then leave it all to burn down as you drive along your merry way.

I'm having the same problem as Paul; in Internet Explorer with Windows XP, no spoiler tags will work... I tried in Google Chrome and they work just like normal.

[I've had several reports of this happening today, and yet on my Windows XP with IE 8, spoiler tags are working just fine. Please try emptying your browser cache and reload the page. I'll continue looking for a cause, but if I cannot reproduce the problem, I'm at a loss as to what to look for. -Jay]

What a waste of the Weekday Escape. Oh well, looking forward to next Wednesday.

Jay it's working now. I guess it was just a glitch of some kind. All Spoiler Tags do in fact work now. I was using IE 9 though on Windows 7 and it never gave me issues. Anyway i'm glad it's working.

Here's hoping there's an escape game posted that is a little more spooky/halloweeny by Halloween.

That was a little too easy!

Make it a little harder next Halloween!

Reply

the color code box will not open for me. no spoiler worked. halp please.

Reply

joihn,

Which colors are you using?
After entering the colors, did you click the box's latch?
Did you try:

Looking at the couch? The cushions each have a different number of buttons or stiches...so put the colors into the box in this order:
1st is green
2nd is red
3rd is purple
4th is blue.

Or in other words: green - red - purple - blue

If you can't distinguish the colors very well, then you can count the number of times you need to press each button.

From left to right:
1 click -- 3 clicks -- don't click -- 2 clicks

That only works if you haven't already clicked on it...so you may have to restart to get a fresh set of colors.

Let me know if that solution didn't work.
Happy playing! :)
