Spoopy Saturday

DoraBy the pricking of my thumbs, a bunch of free indie horror games this way come... s? Okay, so I didn't think that one out very well. But hey! Welcome back to Spoopy Saturday, where we post three free super scary freeware games every Saturday leading up to Halloween. This week, a young girl moves into a dusty old house and gets more than she bargained for, a late shift at the office turns terrifying when you discover you're not alone and the doors are locked, and you wake up confused and disoriented in a strange house filled with secrets someone is trying to make you remember. Ghosts, cryptic messages, frantic chases, and of course jump scares await, so let's get started. Just remember not to look over your shoulder...

One Late NightOne Late Night - Available free for PC, Mac, and Linux, Black Curtain Studio's short first-person horror adventure is all about when late night office work gets freaky, and we don't mean "stumbled across that secret folder on your coworker's computer with all the weird websites" freaky. There's something in the building with you, and as you creep down the dark hallways searching for clues, you quickly discover you also need to find a way out. Though lacking in answers (that may be addressed in the upcoming sequel), if you're looking for chills with a dash of the surreal, this might just be the spoopy game for you.

ParanoiacParanoiac - Available for PC and Mac with the RPGHub tool, and translated by vgperson, Uri's horror adventure about a young woman who moves into her aunt's house following the woman's death doesn't quite have the polish of Uri's more recent games, but is perfect for the jump scare crowd. During the day, Miki explores the quiet, dusty house and searches for answers, but at night she finds herself pursued by a terrifying creature that will hunt her down wherever she runs unless she can figure out where to hide, as only one of the available spots is "right" and others will lead to death or a continued chase... and there's no way to figure out which is which, or even where the hiding spots are! Though definitely unintuitive, Paranoiac still has some great creepy atmosphere and shocking images that make it worth turning the lights down for.

7Days7Days - Available only for PC (sorry!) RevoLab's surreal first-person adventure begins with you trapped in a dark and unsettling house, and as the days pass, it becomes clear someone wants you to remember something, and unless you can figure out what, things are only going to get freakier. Most of the gameplay revolves around exploring, and as the title implies, you'll wake up in bed multiple times as the game progresses, your surroundings changing each time. The ending may be a little anticlimatic for some, but if you want a game that's going to make your skin crawl and do its best to make you jump out of your seat, this is the choice for you.

7 Days is insanely creepy.

I can't get past the part where

the screen flashes RUN and the monster gets you.

Actually Dora, re: your opening line, a bunch is singular hence it is indeed 'comes'.

WARNING to all JIG players: One Late Night is absolutely AWFUL. In order to play this game, you have to go to their website, blindly select and download a ZIP file onto your computer...and then you are on your own to figure out what exactly you are supposed to do next. After downloading and installing each of the various versions that are listed, I finally found one that SORT of worked.
What, exactly, is Win(dx11), Win(x86)?!? After extracting the files from the ZIP, I THEN had to go from folder to random folder to random folder, until I finally discovered an EXE file! The entire presentation of this game to a gamer is just all around sloppy. It's deceiving as the website, and their "YouTube Game Trailer" look very appealing and..well, typical for an Indie game.
I initially tried downloading and running "Win" from their list of downloads, as I am using good 'ol Windows 7, but I only got a white screen with music. Same with Win(x86). I got Win(dx11) to actually show graphics, but THEN got completely lost in the confusing game controls! One of the main controls (listed in the help file in "options") is
"TO INTERACT - Press LMB"
WHAT is "LMB"?!?!?
Also, another command listed is "TO HIDE - STAND NEAR A DESK OR CERTAIN CORNERS AND PRESS LMB" (all of the other commands are normal, ie"TO LEAVE DESK - PRESS SPACE")
I am totally lost and confused here...I guess I am the only person on this planet who doesn't have a clue what pressing LMB means... I am removing all traces of this game from my computer and going back to my extensive library of games, most all of which were discovered on JIG.(none make ANY reference to pressing "LMB" while I am playing. haha)
