Strange Little Searching

DoraKamotokamotokamo's escape game Strange Little Searching may look simple, but it's simple in a way that makes you go, "Oh. Oh. Oooooh. I see what you did there. Clever girl." You're trapped in a room that appears to be mostly featureless apart from a bit of furniture and some boxes propped up on tables, and unlike many escape games you may notice that this one doesn't appear to have a door, which is typically essential to the whole "escaping" part of the formula. The cursor will change when you can interact with something, but you'll still want to search everywhere since some items or viewpoints are very well hidden. Click an item in your inventory to highlight it, and you'll be ready to try to use it wherever you want. Though the room may appear mostly empty, a little bit of experimentation will reveal some pretty big secrets...

Escape is a pretty popular genre of games, and with so many flooding the internet every single week, it can be hard to do something to stand out, and yet Strange Little Searching has done just that. Its core mechanic isn't exactly "Bwaaaaaaah?!" levels of surprise, but it's cleverly implemented in a way that encourages players to experiment and, well, think outside the box. Some of the things you're expected to know or figure out how to do are admittedly a little unintuitive depending on how your brain works, and something about the sparse design makes getting stuck all the more frustrating due to the lack of feedback. Strange Little Searching is nowhere near as obvious with its clues as some other games, but with a little but of imagination and ingenuity, you'll find the way out is very real. Strange Little Searching is a great idea that injects a bit of whimsy into your typical escape game, making it a welcome addition to anyone's day indeed.

The shelf

You start facing the shelf. Take the signboard, the decorative box and the screwdriver in the cabinets.
Look that one of the cabinets needs a key.

That was different, but in a good way.

I personally did not have any difficulty with viewpoints or finding things, hooray for a changing cursor.

Finding all the clickable spots is tricky

The door in the floor is very difficult to find.

I am stuck after using the matches.

I have: The shelf key (used), the decorative box key (used), a piece of cut-out box, a miniature decorative box (used), miniature signboard (don't know how to use this clue), miniature desk (used), miniature shelf (empty), matchbox (empty), miniature man with a steering wheel, knife.

I can access the first door in the wall. I have not found the door in the floor.

What on earth did I just do?

Alkalannar:

The door in the floor contains the next item you'll need to get past the patterned door in the wall. Look for the changing cursor at the base of one of the other walls...but there can't be any objects sitting there when you do.

Thanks, Michael. That's the bit I was stuck on.

That's a weird one - nice to see something different!

Beat it unassisted. Nice piece of work; would like to see a bit more done with the central gimmick, though.

Don't understand what to do with the matchsticks.

You'll need to lay a floor at some point :)

There is a way to avoid the pixel-hunting:

Press the Tab button

After

Using the matchsticks and finally the screwdriver

I am completely stuck. I've used all the items I can think of on everything I can think of, yet am unable to figure out how to finish the game.

Dang it power of posting.

Turn the paper gotten by cutting the door out over in the 'about item' screen, and THEN you can put the sheet in the space and the box on the sheet.

That was really cute - I love escape games but I especially like them with a twist!

I'm stuck at what I think is a completely different place.

I found the floor door, have I believe all the miniatures (box, signboard, shelf, desk) and know where they go but have looted them all except the signboard, which I can't figure out. I have a knife, I cut out the back of the box and flipped it over, but don't know where the piece goes now. I have what I guess is the screwdriver, a box of matches, and one unused key that has a face.
There's a giant pit of doom in front of me and the wall looks like it's notched, meaning something can be slid in to get across.
I think the left mini-box holds the answer, but I don't know how to get it to work.

Leopardmask:

If only you had a bunch of long, sturdy sticks to build a bridge with. Of course they'd have to be fairly large... do you know of something you can do with small things to make big things appear?

OH! Got it! Thank you! I just didn't think of

Putting anything other than miniatures in the blue spots.

can't wait for the walkthrough for this :)

How did you figure that out? Have you used that trick in other escape games?

It's a Flash thing. It works by default and used to be more common, but it can be disabled easily in more recent versions of ActionScript, and most developers these days do that to prevent "cheating."

it's so... meta. I loved this game once I figured out what the heck was going on! More please?!?!

Brilliant! Too bad not that long of a game.
