Submachine extended versionMateusz Skutnik has created an extended version of his recent point-and-click game, Submachine, appropriately titled: Submachine Remix. Boasting twice as many rooms, a new puzzle and an alternate ending, the new version is something of a remix to tide you over until he finishes a true sequel, which he promises is on the way.

If you've never played a point-and-click or room escape game before, then the Submachine games are a very good place to start. They are simple and straightforward, and don't require alot of precise clicking on obscure pixels to advance.

Play Submachine Remix

If you haven't already done so, be sure to check out my review of the original Submachine game.

We've been here covering the entire Submachine series since the very beginning with reviews and walkthroughs for all of them...

Outside the main storyline, and yet still another great Submachine, is a game created for the band Future Loop Foundation:

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

For the people screaming for a walkthrough... (this is my first attempt at making one)

Go up. Click on the switch.
Go down. Go left three times, and then up. Click on the wheel behind the pipes, and click on the switch.
Go down once and left once. Drag and drop the wheel onto the hole in the pipe.
Go right once, and then down, left, down. Click on the coin on the floor.
Go up and right (to the room with the lighthouse picture). Go down and click on the switch and the paper. (You can read the paper in your inventory, but it doesn't help with the game much).
Go down again, and left. Click the metal box on the wall. Then click on the coin in your inventory. There are four numbers on top of the coin. Enter them into the box.The big brown box opens. Click on it and get out the fuse.
Go right twice. Make all the small boxes float by clicking the bells. Bell solution:

Click the bells like so: (1 is far left, 4 is far right) 1, 2, 3, 4, 3.

Click on the small oannel that opens in the grey box to get out tile D.
Go left and look at the three circles on the wall. Memorise the pattern and go up twice, left once, and replicate the pattern by clicking on the circles in this room.
Go right twice, down once and put the fuse into the empty space.
Go right once and hover over the right button on the radio (don't click it). When the draw opens get the spoon.
Go left, up, left, up, right, right and pull the lever on the big machine. Go left three times and turn the wheel.
now go right, down, right, down, right, up. Click on the tile in the machine.
Go down twice and click on the small ball on the floor.
Go up, left, up, left, up, left, left and put the small ball in the clock. Get the tile out of the hatch that opens.
Go right four times and put the spoon between the lightbulbs. Get the last tile out of the hatch.
This next bit is not necessary to complete the game. Go left, left, down, left, down and click on the lever.
Then go up, right, up, right, up, up and click on the wisdom crystal. Then go down twice and left once. Put the four tiles on the diamond on the wall.
Click on the door that appears, then click the top button. When the lift stops click the lower button.
There are two doors in front of you. Clicking either will end the game. The left door (blue) will take you outside while the right door (red) will take you into a different part of the building.

Solved it.

Way more challenging than the original.

How do get the last piece with the radio? I've just been clicking repeatedly on the button, which is making the drawer come out, but it seems to have stopped...

Reply

Never mind. Got it and completed it.

Hovering is my friend.

argh!
cant find the bottom right hand piece!

how are you meant to use the machine with the circle light bulb thingy with three dots? I tried all (i think) the combinations of green/red lights but it still won't open it up =(

Reply

Nice expansion.

But what is up with the hatch in the ceiling of the room just above where you start?

Reply
The_Corruptor October 23, 2005 9:25 AM

I can't figure out how to open the fusebox. It's really driving me crazy

Reply
Desincarnage October 23, 2005 11:20 AM

Finished it, but there is still something on my mind.

What are the roof trap and 5th switch for? Are they connected somehow?

Reply

of what use is a bloody spoon?! And does the picture mean anything?

Reply

Radio:

You don't click on the button, you hold your mouse over it and the drawer will open.

Reply

Tricky thing here. To get Tile C, turn on the electricity. Instead of putting the spoon in, look for the 3 levers that turn the lights green on the circular tube thing. When the lights are green and the power is running, it will give you the third tile.
As far as I know, if you blow the power before doing this, you're screwed.

Reply

This was just as easy as the first one..its a fun game but its really easy..hopefully #2 will be harder. The ending is soooo dissapointing....moomba...make sure all the levers are pulled down and the fuse (little white bar with lines) is in the slot with the other 3.

Reply

Does anybody know...

What does the Wisdom jewel do?

Reply

If there's one thing i really dislike with point&click games, it's the 'dead end syndrome' - You get to a certain point from which the game cannot be solved because of a certain error you made in some previous step, and what's worse is that there's no indication of this fact , meaning that any further effort you put into the game is a complete waste of time. (Zack Mcracken probably rings some bells to some of the older ones among you).

I may be horribly wrong, but did anybody else get to such point in this game?

using the spoon to short the power prior to retrieving the metal piece from the round device (the one with lightnings and three red/green lights) seems to make it impossible to get it later on.

Reply

Also stuck with the circle light bulb. Could use a hint please.

Reply
Satsuma Fokai October 23, 2005 12:49 PM

Not as difficult as Hapland, but fun. You just need to turn on all 4 circuit breakers to get the piece from the "thing" with the green/red bulbs.

Reply

i'm wondering about that hatch too.. also,

i clicked on the blue door at the end. what's in the red one?

Reply
SGT Superman October 23, 2005 2:52 PM

I found out what the hatch is...

When you short out the power go back to the room where you found the coin and a new switch will be there, click it then go back to the hatch, a ladder will be there, climb it to find wisdom. What you do with this dimond thing I don't know. Also when you click the red door it just gives a different screen.

Reply

@ ejay
well, htis game is easy. So I thought I'd make it harder by including such a dead end. Just to make it more difficult to finish. And btw - did you play hapland? that game is nothing but dead ends.
and - thank you all for playing. See you in submachine2.

and for those wondering what's the hatch for - it can be solved pretty easily, especially if you are able to finish that "simple" game.

and maybe one more thing - if anyone has some ideas on how to make difficult puzzles, feel free to eail me.

thanks again.

Wow! This was better than the second version. I enjoyed playing :)

Reply

Mateusz,
just wanted to set things straight- i like your game :-)
It has nice puzzles, nice graphics and nice atmospheric sound effects. Which is probably why I was dissapointed by this dead end thing. It's a cheap way of extending a game's longevity.

You mentioned hapland - true, that game has many dead-ends but they're incorporated into the gameplay- Most of them are clearly noticeable (you know that when your guy dies you should probably restart), and even when they're not ,they still work well with the basic premise of the game- you know that the point of the game is to trigger a certain set of events in a certain order and almost always there is some visual feedback letting you see that you've reached a point of which there is no return.
And that's probaly the point i'm trying to make- it's not that horrible that you actually used a dead end, but you should have let the player know.

Reply

Adding dead ends is not the same as adding difficulty. All it added was frustration and wasted my time. Other than that, pretty nice.

Reply

My son who is 4 just loves these point and click game. This one was just right for him, he was able to figure out the puzzles before he got mad and frustrated! We just love Jay is Games!! Thanks so much.

Jade what parts are you having trouble with? What do you have in your inventory?

Reply

I suppose the blue and red doors at the end are the same because I pressed the red one

This one was really like the first, but I think I like this one better
:]

I think if you mess up with the spoon [or blowing out the power before getting Tile C], the whole thing will be messed up. I started over again because of that.
That's one point of the game I don't like.

Reply

How do you get the pearl from the pipe again??? I forgot! That is the only piece I am missing. Thanks!

Reply

Hey all I am having trouble figuring how to get the tile from the round thing with the green lights.

I did the bells puzzle, got that tile, found the wheel and broke the pipe to get the pearl, got that tile, found the coin and opened the box, got the fuse thingy and installed it, turned on all the switches...got the spoon from the radio...is there something else I am missing that is required to get the round thing to give you a tile? I don't want to blow the power yet because of what everyone says up there :)

Reply

Nevermind! I figured it out. I guess I forgot

the big switch at the top!

Hey Jay! Hi everyone! Haven't posted a message in awhile and I just had to say something. :) This new layout is a GREAT halloween theme, and I like the halloween themed games randomly switching at the top of the home page, and I also like that creepy face at the top of the screen that dissapears.....it wasn't just me right? O_O Anyways on to Submachine remix. I never played the original so I don't know what is diffrent about it, but the game is great. I finished this one without any help at all and checked

behind both doors

. Took me awhile to figure out the spoon thing but I did it...and I never noticed a hatch, or got a wisdom thingy. I'm going to go back and check that out. For people who liked this let me tell you something:

Submachine 2

Keep up the great work Jay!

Reply
the flying monkey October 27, 2005 3:44 AM

whats with the wisdom crystal?

Reply

I played it again because I was curious

about the doors at end. Turns out, the blue one leads outside, with the "contact the author and play again" and the red one is another room with 2 unclickable doors and it says like, Submachine 2 coming soon, and then "contact the author and play again"

I love this game. I've played it like, 38473 times haha

Reply

Okay, I found this part to be a little creepy:

The part where you have to hold the cursor over the radio button to get the drawer to open.

It just struck me as rather odd, since I'd never seen a thing like that before in Point & Clicks. Pretty unique, I'd say.

Reply

Hey, near the end, does it matter which door you pick to exit from? I was just curious, since I wasn't expecting to be faced with two. >.>

Reply

I have to agree about the "dead end" syndrome. There should be an alternative power supply available once you short out the system, otherwise you can solve it perfectly, but still be unable to snatch the third tile.

Reply

how do u find tile c

Reply

ok, i guess i'm the only really thick one here, i've so far got the top right and bottom left piece, and im stuck, what is the combination of those numbers plzzzzzzzzzzzzz help !

hi people ! It was easy and I didn't use any spoiler in this game.

very cool. cant wait for the next version of this.

the only thing that got me was that dam radio. I kept trying to left click it instead of just holding the mouse over

Why do you even need the diamond of wisdom when you can basically finish the game without it? I don't understand... And what is the picture for???

A few added comments:

A Map

There are a few things to add to the w/t's:
1. The code number changes for each game - take the number from the coin.
2. Many have had problems getting the oil pipe to break - the trick is the wall panel 2 rooms down from the bright orange room - there are 3 'screws' between the 2 pipes - note the direction, whether they are horizontal or vertical - then make the valves agree with this. After you make any changes here, be sure to turn the wheel to activate them - you'll hear the pipe break, then you can retrieve the pearl.
3. After you have used the spoon on the machine room bulbs, go down to the room where you found the coin - go left from the orange room and go down, and you will see #4 switch. Pull this down and this will activate the hatch, and drop down a ladder in the room above the start room. From the new switch, go up one, right one, up one, right one, up one and you'll see the new ladder. Go up and find the wisdom stone. Then go down two, and left one to place your tiles in the plaque. If you do the tiles first, you are forced to exit.

Good Luck!

Oops! one other thing I forgot to mention above:

On the map you'll notice that I labeled the switches 1-4. I explained #4, but 1-3 correspond to the round device with 3 lights on the base. If you onlt have two, look at the map to see which one you've missed, rather than traipsing all over the place.

this is how u get the spoon and what u do with it...

wave your cursor over the righgt radio button (don't click) the drawer will open- take out the spoon.
find the fuse box and put the spoon in the middle of the electricity and when it blows the box at the bottom opens and u get a triangle!gd luck

i have done everything mentioned here but when i put the spoon on the bulbs the ladder didnt come down!

Reply

to anyone who wants a full color map (if you really think you NEED one), http://darkflux.net/shared/submachine_map_sm.JPG

also...

if you have trouble getting the wisdom jewel, you should know that it cannot be gotten until you have ALL 4 PIECES of the "puzzle". then flip the switch in the lower left corner room, and the ladder in the upper area drops, allowing access to the jewel.

and to Acefire, you obviously didn't play the original, or got a "bad link". try this: http://www.arcadetown.com/submachine/gameonline.asp
it's abit shorter and compacted, but it's what got me interested in the series :)
also, to those confused about the sinificance of the picture and the wisdom crystal,

they are of little use, other than as "foreshadowing elements" of submachine 2, since that is what you start out with in that one... and anyway, you can always use more "wisdom" ;)

OMG!!!!! i finally finished for the first time without a walkthrough.... this page only helped for the last tile, which everybody racked their brain for even the littlest clue on how to possibly get it..... well, its the first time i finished without a TOTAL walkthrough.. im just doing this to kill time until the Marlins start playing but it is VERY entertaining ROCK ON submarine

OMG thank you so much talps!!! without you i would have struggled on this game forever!!!

I've tried the link for the expansion a few times now but all I get is a blank screen, any tips there?

hello......this was a really fun, but frusterating game.......and im just going to guess that the wisdom gem is just some kind og cheap trophy

Just a word of advice if anyone is having a problem with this appearing at freegameplayer: You must disable Adblock on Firefox (if installed) so you're forced to watch some ridiculous commercial before it will load. In my personal opinion, using this trickery is the #1 way to get me to NOT go to a website (Along with those "You must enable JavaScript to view this page" sites), but I did make an exception for this game. I hope it's worth it.

Not very difficult.About the same as the original.

Does anyone know how to get the "continue into the Submachine" ending for the newer version of this game at the Pastel Stories (the artist's) webpage? I just can't seem to get it, assuming it even exists. My character just exits all the time.

I got the Wisdom Crystal and I've gone through both doors with it. Still unable to open any doors behind the red door ending, only turn the light on and off. Yes it is true, IF YOU USE THE SPOON BEFORE GETTING THE TRIANGLE PIECE FROM THE CIRCLE TUBE THING, YOU CAN NOT FINISH THE GAME. FIRST turn on all the electricity and get that piece, THEN short the fuse.

The Submachine series really is kinda like the "LOST" of point and click escape games...

Honestly...

Even when choosing between 2 doors at the end,

taking the blue one looks like it ends you up on "The Island"...

and taking the red one ends you up somewhere else on "The Island's 'Facilities' "

and the when you finish the tile part of the puzzles, it reminded me of the Dharma Initiative logo somewhat...

Reply

interesting... pulled all 4 circuit breakers yet tile C never appeared...

oh well. I remember how it ends.

Reply

You take the blue door - the story ends, you wake up in your island and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red door - you stay in Wonderland and Murtagh shows you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

Reply

Matrix Reference?

Choose the blue door and the story ends. Choose the red door, and I'll show how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Reply

Please someone help me with the combination.

I figured out early on that it must be the coin, but I SWEAR TO GOD I CANNOT SEE ANY NUMBERS ON IT. I guessed at all sorts of numbers the shapes might be making (0s or an 8 for the eyes of the bird, etc. etc.), but I just CAN'T SEE IT ANYWHERE. People keep talking about a combination on the top of the coin like there are just some magically visible numbers there...?!?!!

Reply

Well, all I can say is that the version on his website is yet a different version than this one.

BECAUSE THERE AIN'T NO FRINGIN FRANGIN NUMBER ON THAT COIN

I give up.

Reply

nougat

Seems like your playing the original, because in the remix

The number is clearly visible on top of the coin.

If that is the original game

Click the coin to zoom in on it, then hover over different areas of the coin until numbers appear at the bottom of the screen. That will be your combo.
