The Basement EscapeHuzzah! Tesshi-e is back with another excellent game!

First, don't panic after you notice the intro screen you've seen before. Yes, it's from The Escape Hotel 3: Remake released last summer. Tesshi-e just revisited his favourite hotel, lost his way and ended up locked in hotel basement. No wooden or brick rooms this time, but grey concrete floor and walls, shining metal pipes and cables, strip lights and some lockers. Typical technical floor. Boring. But wait, jazzy music from hotel lobby reaches your ears here in basement too and if you take a closer look at the lockers, they seem quite interesting on second sight...yes, puzzles and codes, hints and clues, it is Tesshi-e's game as we know it!

Quality puzzles and three Mr. Birdies are waiting for you. And Happy Coin too, at the end. Just switch the language button from Japanese to English and go! Cursor isn't changing, the game can be saved.

Have a good time with another great escape game!

The Basement Escape

You love the Escape Hotel so much, you had to go back for a visit. But in a twist of events, you get stuck in the not-so-elegantly decorated basement. At least the game gives you some smooth music to soothe your nerves.

Exploration

You start off in the middle of the basement, facing the entrance which is now locked. Zoom in on the right side of the wall to see a bucket chained to a pipe running across the ceiling, too high to reach. Under it on the left, there are some L-shaped markings on the floor. Three pipes labeled F run together into a box with a pattern of black and white buttons under a clue with black and white circles.

Follow the pipes across the wall as they run into a box marked with a Libra ♎ sign drawn diagonally above a two-digit lock that also has a hexagonal dial next to it. Turn right to follow the pipes further as they run over a pillar and split and rejoin one way to form four pipes marked with an I, and two pipes run into the floor through a sign reading V.

Turn right to find a wall with more pipes and more labels. Six pipes connected to a cupboard with tied handles pass through a letter S and split into paths with one and five pipes, labeled E and N. A drain runs across the bottom of the wall, with a grate at the lower-left and a metal panel screwed down in the middle of the drain. Next to that panel, there's a round manhole cover in the floor, but you don't have the tool needed to open it.

On the right side of the screen, a plain door is locked and needs a key. The next door over has a lock with five buttons (in black, and one more in white), under the clue colors i.

Turn right. On the other side of the pillar, there's another safe on the wall which requires a circular key. In the lower-right corner, there's a fire extinguisher box, which contains... a fire extinguisher, yes, but also a copper piece with a screw thread on its top. Click the extinguisher to turn it over and find a spade key taped to its bottom.

Unlock 1

Use the spade key to unlock the plain door, then open it.

Inside, there's a Mr. Birdy and a four-digit safe with the clue FINE.

Penalty

Use the clue from the pipes to unlock the FINE safe.

The F, I, N, E labels cover 3, 4, 5, 1 pipes.

So enter 3451 to unlock the safe, and open it to find a white stencil with digits and rectangular cutouts, and a lever.

Pull the lever, and the drain fills with water. A capsule flows along and stops at the grate, so pick it up.

And then open it to get a round key.

Unlock 2

Use the round key to unlock the safe next to the fire extinguisher, and open it to find a Mr. Birdy and four electrical meters marked with zodiac signs. (Click and hold on each of them to zoom in.)

Scaled

Use the clue from the electrical meters to unlock the Libra box facing it.

Read the Libra scale (top-right), which displays a value of 3.6x10, or 36.

So enter 36 in the lock, and turn the dial counterclockwise to match the direction of the symbol (5 clicks).

Then unlock and open the box to find a hexagonal wrench and a clue with six pleasing color names, each five letters long.

Colors

Use the clue from the color list to unlock the Colors door.

The letter i occurs in the 1st, 3rd, 3rd, 5th, 4th, 3rd positions in each color name.

So click those buttons on the door, and it opens into a small room.

There's a cupboard with three pedestals labeled Mr. Birdy, and a metal board on the right wall, fastened by hexagonal bolts.

Loosen

Use the wrench to remove those hexagonal bolts and the cover. Take the ladder from the hole.

Climb

Zoom in on the markings on the ground under the bucket, and use the ladder on it, and then climb up to reach the bucket. Its chain is padlocked so you can't remove the bucket, but you can look in the bucket to get the last Mr. Birdy.

Birdy

Now that you have all three Mr. Birdys, use them on the pedestals. The right two Birdys tilt their heads towards each other.

The cupboard door opens up, so take the copper rod with a screw-like tip.

Three

Use the clue from the Mr. Birdys to unlock the box under the F pipes.

The white circles appear in the LCCLR positions, but the corresponding Birdys have their heads pointed URRUL.

So click the URRUL buttons, and open the safe to find a plain key.

Unlock 3

Climb the ladder again and use the plain key to unlock the padlock and get the bucket.

Eww

Use the two copper pieces on each other to assemble a manhole remover.

Then use it on the manhole to remove it. There's something hidden at the bottom, too low to reach.

But you can flip over the manhole cover to find a pair of pliers.

Snip

Look up from the manhole, and use the pliers to cut free the handles of the cabinet next to the S pipes.

Then open it to find a screwdriver and a three-digit safe with the digits arranged vertically, and a clue with a grid of digits. If you look closely, you can see two pins above the grid.

Numbers

Use the stencil on the digit clue of the three-digit safe, changing the numbers.

Then use the new numbers to unlock that safe.

Hint: Notice how the digits only go up to 6?

The letters that appear on 1, 2, ..., 6 pipes are E, V, F, I, N, S. So we have
123456 = EVFINS,
3421 = FIVE
61215= SEVEN
5451 = NINE

Enter 579 in the safe, then open it to find a hex key (Allen key).

Unscrew

Use the screwdriver on the metal plate in the drain, causing the water to drain into the manhole instead.

Use the bucket on the manhole to pick up the item floating inside.

It's a wooden box with hexagonal screws.

So use the hex key to remove the screws and open the box. Inside, there's a heart key.

Normal End

Save your game, and use the heart key to unlock the door and leave.

Enjoy your stay in one of the Escape Hotel's classic rooms.

Happy Coin End

Use the heart key to unlock the door, but don't leave yet.

One of the clues has changed, and one of the safes has reset.

This time, the Mr. Birdy heads point LUR, so just follow the circle hint on the same safe (under the F pipes) to click the LUULR buttons.

Open the safe to find a Happy Coin, then leave through the door.

Enjoy your time at the hotel bar. As always, a happy coin will bring happiness to you.

Anybody else start to panic a little when

water started flowing in? It took me a bit to realize it was in a channel, and the game wasn't about to switch genres to horror as the player raced the clock to escape before the room filled up and they drown

I usually love Tessi-e games, but this one was a bit much. The zodiac puzzle, and especially the Mr. Birdy four-button puzzle were kinda silly. This was my least favorite Tesshi-e game, and I hope future games don't require you to be inside the designer's mind to solve them. They just weren't logical.
