The Deepest Sleep

DoraScript Welder's point-and-click horror adventure games Deep Sleep and its sequel Deeper Sleep couldn't be more ironically named if they tried, since they're not so likely to bring about restful slumber so much as nightmare fuel intent on keeping you awake. In the first game, you found yourself trapped in a literal nightmare and struggling to wake up, while in the sequel as you researched lucid dreaming you discovered you hadn't ever actually awoken. Now, in The Deepest Sleep, as the title implies you find yourself going even deeper into your nightmare in order to find a way out, while at the same time trying to stay one step ahead from the creatures who want to keep you asleep... for good. To play, just click when the cursor changes colour to interact, and use items from your inventory at the top of the screen as you find them in order to solve puzzles and proceed.

The Deepest SleepThis series has always been one of those rare batches of games where "weird and disorienting" is both point and attraction, since they capture the surreal and unsettling atmosphere of dreams so perfectly. Even when it isn't throwing jump scares at you, The Deepest Sleep keeps you on your toes with some superb use of lighting and sound. Most of the items you'll find have a fairly logical implementation, even if you'll need to be wearing you back-trackin' boots for a lot of it, and some scenes will definitely make you squeal as you scrabble to survive. That said, however, some of the puzzles are also more frustrating this time around, in particular a timed, multi-room puzzle in growing darkness where you have to remember the correct sequence you used to get through to get back out of once you find the item you need. Though technically the last game in the series, The Deepest Sleep still feels like it leaves a lot of questions unanswered, and the concept itself still offers fodder for more great ideas that could be played with down the road. On its own, however, The Deepest Sleep is still a great example of a horror game that knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat, and exactly when to try to make you spring right off it.

The Deepest Sleep: Walkthrough
by Fenrisle

NOTE: This walkthrough only lists the essential steps, with a few additions to make your life easier. Examine everything you can to understand more of the story, to spot Easter Eggs, to possibly find a secret ending, and simply for greater immersion and enjoyment!

Part One: The Paralysis

  1. Click the shadowed figure slightly to the left. Click twice more to continue the dialogue, and one more time to recommence with the game.

Part Two: Dark Church

  1. Click on the light. Purloin A SEALED VASE from the bottom-left corner.

  2. Go through the door in the center; click the twin lights, and then again.

  3. Go through the portal on the right. Open the door in the center and go up to access the room.

  4. Take A SCREWDRIVER from the center part of the top shelf and A HAMMER from the right part of the middle shelf.

  5. Exit the room by going down. Go to your right.

  6. Scrutinize the statue. Use A SCREWDRIVER on the statue to take A SHINY GEM.

  7. Note “a red rope hanging from the ceiling” above the doorway to the right.

  8. Return to the room with the three portals (left twice), then go up twice.

  9. Examine the stone skull, then insert A SHINY GEM into an eyehole of the skull. Use A HAMMER on A SEALED VASE to obtain A SHINY GEM; insert this into the other slot.

  10. Go through the opened door on the left. Act quickly while in the puzzle rooms!

  11. Take A SMALL GEM from its position between the two pillars, closer to the right one. Examine “a small hole” near the currently-closed portal to the left. Insert A SMALL GEM into this hole and go left.

  12. Take the gems and switch their position on each side; the left side of the room changes from bottom to top, and the right side of the room changes from top to bottom. As a guide, the grey holes are where you take the gems from and the blue ones are where they belong. Go left.

  13. Take the three gems and place them to the blue holes to the left of each location you received the gems from. (Again, taken from grey and placed in blue.) Go left.

  14. Take A HANDLE from the table. Go right.

  15. Return all gems to their original positions in all three rooms. Take the gems from where they are (blue sockets) and restore them to the grey sockets; remember to go right when finished with a chamber. Return to the room with the skull.

  16. Go down twice. Go left.

  17. Examine “a reel with no handle.” Insert A HANDLE into place, then pull the rope down by winding the handle. Go right thrice.

Part Three: Sewers

  1. Go right twice. Enter the hollowed alcove in the wall to your right. Take A STOOL. Examine the poster attached to the wall in the center of the room, and take note of the information. Leave the clown’s room (go left) and go left.

  2. Place A STOOL in the doorway. Return to the room with a winch (left four times). Pull the handle to ensure the rope goes up again. Go right thrice.

  3. Go right twice. Go up once past the opened (raised) grate, then go right. BEWARE! Transiently release the mouse so you don’t accidentally make a sudden movement.

  4. Moving very slowly to avoid being devoured by the monster, pull the lever down. Do not let the bar at the top fill completely (and become bright red); take small pauses if necessary. However, once you pull the lever, you will have to move as quickly as possible to the right and enter the safe room before the switch automatically flips down and the entryway closes. I suggest allowing the bar to drop to a minimum once your cursor is on the lever, then clicking it and moving steadily but carefully to the right.

Part Four: Safe Room

  1. Examine the piece of paper on the table; you will need this pattern later, but you don’t have to memorize it yet.

  2. Go right, then up into the bathroom.

  3. Take A GOLDEN KEY, go down, then unlock the door to your right with it. Click the door to open it and proceed.

  4. Go right thrice, then go up into the entrance surrounded by the blue wall.

  5. Take AN EMPTY GREASE CAN, go down, then enter the area in the top left.

Part Five: First Stone – Mushroom

  1. Take A STONE TABLET from near the center of the room. Examine “a fat, oily mushroom,” then take A HAMMER to it. Yuck! Collect the oil with AN EMPTY GREASE CAN to obtain A FULL GREASE CAN. Go right thrice.

  2. Examine the rusty trapdoor. Oil the lock with A FULL GREASE CAN. Open the trapdoor and enter (going “down”). Be warned that you will once again dance delicately with the sewer monster.

Part Six: Second Stone – Cellar

  1. Place your cursor on the second stone tablet and immediately go right. Examine “a pile of plates.” Smash them with A HAMMER, go left, quickly take A STONE TABLET, then go up the ladder (to your left).

Part Seven: Third Stone – Ruined Safe Room

  1. Go left, then up towards the semicircular nook. Examine the third stone tablet on the bottom part of the wooden shelf, then take A WIND-UP KEY from the sill somewhat to the bottom right of the screen. Go left to exit.

  2. Go to your left, to the bottom left, and left another three times.

  3. Examine “a music box” on the table. Wind it with A WIND-UP KEY.

  4. Go left, open the curtain to your left and exit the area, and take A STONE TABLET from the bottom left.

  5. Go right six times.

Part Eight: Fourth Stone – Kitchen

  1. Go up. Examine the lid in the center of the room, slightly nearer the top. Lever it with A SCREWDRIVER, and jam the gears with the same item. Go down.

  2. Go left through the bottom doorway, then go left another three times. Go up into the ruined bathroom. Go up, right, then up (through the doorway to the right).

  3. Take A STONE TABLET from the bottom shelf of the bookcase on your left. Go down, left, and down twice.

Part Nine: Stones Puzzle

  1. Go left, then click the piece of paper (now on the floor). Note the pattern; it is randomized per game.

  2. Go “down” to exit, then go right thrice. Place the stone tablets appropriately to match the pattern you saw.

  3. Turn the wheel near the bottom in the center of the screen repeatedly to bring down the ladder, ignore the sewer monster, and immediately go up into the attic when given the message.

Part Ten: Finale

  1. Close the trapdoor.

  2. Click the mirror to your left and examine your reflection. Click again to watch the cutscene.

  3. ENDING ONE: Go to your right, and continue to go up (clicking through the screens of text when you are finished reading) to capture the Traveler. This continues the endless series and introduces chaos into our world as a result of the player saving themselves.

  4. ENDING TWO: Go to your right, and allow the Traveler to escape by doing nothing after the first screen of text. This breaks the vicious cycle at the cost of the player remaining in the Deepest Sleep forever.

  5. ENDING THREE: ???

A bit disjointed from the last one. There were a lot of great moments, but they didn't seem particularly meshed together. Given that the scariest parts are the ones where you see less, I was baffled by all the layers of detail that didn't really do anything. Save the kitchen, of course, who doesn't like a kitchen! Always adds value. And then the payoff oddly had fewer effects and ambiance than the rest of it. It's too bad– what a great gimmick of a "mini-game", except I was a little too amused by the supposed threat.

If perhaps there'd been some time taken to look at pictures of actual bottom feeders... now those beasts are gnarly looking.

And the clown was oddly unsatisfying. Don't we want to hang the clown? So why do we need a piece of paper to tell us...? The puzzle wasn't clever enough to rate a diagram. The diagram actually confused me more, because I thought the matching rope was a giveaway, and maybe I'd missed something.

The timed minigame near the beginning put ruined the rest of the game. Something like this, with its atmosphere (and the flashlight-limited view) really begs for exploration, and a screen popping up out of nowhere (with no warning that time was running out) telling me game over was so off-putting that I quit then and there. I really enjoyed the first game, partly because there was so much detail to appreciate and I had the time to do so. Not so here, apparently.

In the multi-room minigame I saw no specific sequence that you needed to do. I only saw

the need to put all the gems into the blue-lined holes to open the left door, and then into the gray-lined holes to re-open the right door to get out.

Also I never felt like I was being timed while I was going through the minigame. Maybe I just did the puzzle quickly enough.

While I kinda liked the concept behind the ending, the style of its execution seemed very out of place. As I type this I'm imagining a different execution using the same concept that might've struck a deeper chord.

Aside from the mildly disappointing ending, I thoroughly enjoyed this game, and personally felt it was a bit too short and could've had more things to do. I loved the multiple not-so-subtle reminders that you're not alone down there.

Beat it. No assistance. Got stuck a few times, but persevered. Only died twice, too.

Also, I've formed a headcanon regarding the ending.

The Traveler you chase down at the very end? He IS you, at least an alternate past version of you that failed that little chase sequence in the first game. Space is tangled within the deep sleep; perhaps time is, too. And you do seem to have a strange habit of leaving notes for your past self.

In fact, let's extend that theory a little. Know how whenever you die in this trilogy, you get to try again from right before you were in danger? Maybe that's not just a game mechanic. Maybe every time you die, the viewpoint actually switches to another branch, and your old timeline remains in existence.

I actually hadn't even read this yet. Yours is much better though. :3

And great review as always, Dora. I found the game a little short (except for getting stuck in that multi-room trap near the beginning for a bit haha) compared to its predecessors, but it was still a great quality game while it lasted.

Love this! I thought the exact same thing when I played it too. And don't forget there are TWO endings to this game. =)

The difference:

Whether you bother to catch the Traveller (yourself?) or not.

Interesting. I suspected there was another ending, but I didn't think to go back to try to get it. Now that I have, I'd say it fits neatly into my theory...

After all, in some timelines you make it out of that hallway alive, and in others you don't.

Nice game, but I personally preferred Deeper Sleep. Deep Sleep had nice subtle scares, but suffered a bit from pixelhunting and actually-not-so-scary foes (Slender-like). Deeper Sleep really expanded on what made the original so good and took out some of the 'snags'. It really gave you a feeling of dread in every location.
Deepest Sleep, on the other hand... yeah, it's good, but just not what I expected as the conclusion to the series. It has a lot more 'cheap' jump-scares - wait, no - relies on these jump-scares. The only really nice moment was the guy scuttling around in the far off corridor. As for the decaying house, it's getting a bit old by the third game in the series, but the reveal of those bloody spikes was a nice touch.
Personally I didn't have much trouble with the timed gem section, but I really disliked the mouse-movement thingy. It served only to shock you the first time you encountered it. After that it felt gimmicky and really slowed the pace of the game down.
And the ending was a nice twist, but the implementation of the 'choice' felt kinda clumsy to me. It didn't feel like it had enough 'weight' to it. A good decision in a game really has to feel like it will change the way the entire thing plays out. You want to think that you have really affected the game, but here its just 'do this or do that, get a different end cutscene'.
Don't get me wrong, I (sort of) liked it... but it felt a bit clumsy and out of character compared to the first two in the series.

Sooo,

The shadow people play a game of tag with the living. They steal the bodies from the living and can finally leave, the living become shadow people, and repeat for all eternity.

Am I right?

Anyone else having trouble with the 4-stone puzzle? It seems like I'm putting in everything right according to the walkthrough, but it's not allowing me to progress.

It all works for me, so all I can think of is to...

make sure you've got tiles in the right places. They can look similar if you're not paying careful attention. Go back to the ruined house area to check the paper there & make sure.

Hands down the last game should be called Final Sleep. I will cry if they don't utilize that with its open meaning :D do you die, never sleep again, there's so much with it cmon scriptwielder~:)

The third part was great, but a bit too easy (don't agree with the author at all here). All puzzles are very logical and solvable - but maybe I'm just an Escape-Game-Veteran ;).
Another thing, that was rather funny, were the pink monsters: they look like hungry anusses xD!
