Though it's a scary (if distant) thought in real life, being stranded on an island where you have to fight for survival isn't high on anyone's to-do list. Place it in a casual game, though, and we're tripping over ourselves to start the download. Sahmon Games' simulation series The Island: Castaway has been perplexing players for a few years now with its superb blend of quest-based item hunting and character managing, spawning The Island: Castaway 2 not long after the original was released. Now there's the mobile version of The Island: Castaway, and it manages to bring every pixel of entertainment from its PC cousins to the portable touch screen. Be prepared for the addiction to begin all over again!
The Island: Castaway is sort of a mix between Virtual Villagers, Wandering Willows, and an RPG. You play the role of Tom who finds himself trapped on a tropical island. Other people are there, too, and the mystery of how everyone got there and how they're going to get home is a big one. By speaking to other characters, you'll embark upon missions that range from the small to the large, running around to find food, gather supplies, or help solve some of the many mysteries in the vicinity. There are tons of things to do apart from completing story missions, too, like working with recipes to build your own meals, hunting, fishing, planting things, finding new tools and much more. It seems like the discoveries never end!
The mobile version of The Island: Castaway is essentially the same as the PC/Mac version released in 2010. The biggest difference are the controls, as on portable devices everything must be handled with a touch screen. It's an absolutely flawless transition, though, and after a few minutes of running around you'll likely prefer touch controls over a mouse and keyboard set-up. It's more personal, and arguably more convenient. Also, a game as intricate as this plays better on a tablet device. The screen real estate makes for a much richer experience.
Whether you're curious about the series or you just want a portable addiction to carry with you on the bus, The Island: Castaway is a phenomenal release that will keep you busily scurrying around the island for hours on end. Seriously, it's dangerously captivating!
NOTE: This game was played and reviewed on a NOOK Tablet. Game was available in the North American market at the time of publication, but may not be available in other territories. Please see individual app market pages for purchasing info.

General Information
On the Main Menu you can choose a profile, play or quit, select your options, view the Help file and the Trophy Room.
Options include your desired music and sound volume or you can mute them, full versus windowed screen, and a choice to auto save or not. You can also view the credits from the options menu.
The help pages show you how to fish; dig up bait and plant seeds; how to trap crabs; how to hunt with purchased or hand-made arrows; how to grow and harvest plants; and how to hack down a dead tree and get its wood.
The help pages will pop up as a reminder when you start each new task involving a tool.
You will play as Tom, who washes up on the Eastern Beach and decides to have a look around.
Start by moving Tom around the beach and click for him to pick up fruit, branches, logs, and pearls.
When you need to go into a cave, you will mostly run from left to right until you find the white exit circle, and you will need to do the reverse to go back through the caves.
The caves on the Central Beach and in the Central Forest are more up and down.
The only time you need to look around in a cave is if you are looking for a character or a statue or item of need.
Collect as many items as you can because you will be able to sell them in the Village to get pearls
The paths you need to take are marked in a lighter yellow/green shade. Sometimes it is better to just run rather than confront boars in order to get there until you can afford a better bow.
Determine at different points in time what Inventory items you need because there may not always be room for what you want.
If you run out of room in your Inventory, your choices are to dump something in the Trash or, when you become friendly with the tribe, to sell items to Nomato.

Scene Navigation
In the upper left corner you can see the number of pearls you have collected. Pearls are important for buying items in the Village once you meet the natives.
When you have the ability to make arrows, your quiver will show you the number of arrows available.
Next is a box with a heart and shield. The heart shows Tom's available energy level. When he needs more energy there will be a fruit balloon above his head, meaning you will need to supply him with some food.
The shield shows the amount of protection Tom has when he has taken the Protective Potion.
The tools you have available for your use are pictured at the top of the screen. Upgrades of tools can be purchased from Mbantuve and become important to your safety and efficiency in performing your tasks.
The upper right hand corner has a magnified map of the island which expands as you explore more areas.
When you need to feed Tom for him to regain his energy, you may be asked how many of an inventory item you wish to choose.
If you want more than one, select the button to escalate the number of items to what you want your choice to be.

Interaction with Characters
A Yellow exclamation point over a character's head means he wants to talk to Tom.
A Red exclamation point means that Tom must complete a task or quest to satisfy the person.
A Green explanation point means you have completed the task assigned by that character so give them what they wanted.
Sometimes when you have all the items the person asked for you will need to combine them into the object they really want; you may need to cook first.
Sometimes a picture of a character who wants to talk to you will appear at the left of the screen; find the person and see what they have to say.
A conversation doesn't always mean a new task...it may just provide information.
To find where a character is located on the island, click on the map in the upper right corner.
A blue star will show where everyone is located and you can identify who it is by running your cursor over the star.
A yellow star means the person wants to talk to you.
A white star identifies the merchants in the Village.
A red star means that you have a task you need to fulfill for that person.
A missing star means that person is in one of the caves.
Tom is shown by a blue circle.

Once you get some Boar meat, take it to Phato. He will let you keep the bow, but he wants his quiver back so you will have to get your own arrows from his father or make your own.
Since you proved yourself as a hunter, you can now meet the people in the Village. Phato takes you there.

Take all the soup ingredients to Nick, who will give you the recipe.
Cook the fish soup and take it to Nick.
Boguro wants to talk to you, so go to the Village.
The boars trampled her vegetables, so she wants cabbage, turnips and potatoes; and then she requests 3 boar meat and a fuki.
You can use Boguro's planting area or go back to camp and use the large one there; the seeds are random, so you never know what you are going to get.
You will learn from Borguro that if you do not have room in your inventory to harvest everything, the gods will preserve it for you to come back later and collect when you have the ability to do so.

He is going back to the cave and wants you to talk to Nomato, so go back to the Village.
Nomato has the second stone and will give it to you in exchange for fruit, vegetables, herbs, fish and meat.
If you have what he wants, give it to him; if not, go collect it.
Go tell John about the stones and discuss that Ugo will not give you the third without good reason. Go talk to Tomano, who tells you about yellow smoke.
Talk to Mike to see if there was a smoke bomb in the ship's gear and he will give you one.

John is looking for you again to discuss the stones and altar mechanism.
Nicole and Stefi come to say Nick has kidnapped Amy.
Part 6: Sacrifice
Go find Nick and Amy at the altar just like in Tom's dream at the beginning of the story.
Tom places the 3 stones in their places and Nick falls through the altar. Amy is ok, so Tom looks for Nick and finds the Heart of the Island through the tunnel under the altar.
Nick is under a pile of rubble.
John follows Tom and they have a confrontation with the tribe who is holding John hostage until they get all 12 of their sacred statues.
Go back to camp and talk to Mike. The group goes to the boat Tom found in the Heart of the Island.
Since you probably don't have the last statue, go get it in the tunnel to the Heart of the Island and give all of the statues to the chief to rescue John.
Tomano wants to thank you and have you say good-bye to the rest of the tribe.
After you say good-bye to the tribe, Tomano wants to see you again and gives you a box you are not to open until you get home.
Part 7: Epilogue
The group sets sail on the boat. When they come upon a large ship, Tom says something is wrong.
Our story says "To Be Continued" so you have yet to finish your task of helping the castaways escape their fate.
