The Sandman, a free horror game created by Uri (The Crooked Man) and translated by vgperson (Alice mare, Ib, and many more), is one of those games designed to make you lie awake at night, questioning every creak and unfamiliar sound. The story follows Sophie, a young girl trapped between the bullies at school and the loneliness at home. With her mother gone and her father usually away on business, Sophie spends most of her time by herself and claims it doesn't bother her... but there is the business of her increasing inability to sleep, and one night, as she lays awake in bed, she hears her clock stop. And as she ventures outside, she discovers that's not even the weirdest thing happening tonight by a long shot.
The controls here are pretty basic. Just use the [arrow] keys to move around, [spacebar] to interact or advance text, and [ESC] to open the inventory and save menu. A small sparkle will sometimes draw your attention to important items, such as the helpful map Sophie discovers early on, but you'll still want to investigate everything on your own to make sure you don't miss anything. Most items need to be used manually from your inventory when you get them. If you've played The Crooked Man, you'll probably recognize some names and places, since this is the second in what Uri calls her "Strange Men Series", but don't worry... if you haven't played The Crooked Man, The Sandman still stands on his own.
Analysis: Uri is one of those rare developers who just seems to get better and better with every release, and The Sandman stands head and shoulders above the rest in almost every way. The Sandman gives better subtle direction than its predecessors, cutting down on a lot of wandering especially with the help of the map, and the puzzles are a lot more creative and fun as well... mostly, apart from some annoying timed sequences and a few unintuitive areas. It'll even prompt you to save before some of the more difficult sequences, though chances are only the final area of the game will pose much trouble. Like all of Uri's games, The Sandman uses sound sparsely, but to tremendous effect, especially now with the inclusion of scant voice acting to up the tension and atmosphere in some scenes, and the art and area design is gorgeous too.
That said, The Sandman is definitely one odd duck. The tone can fluctuate wildly, and things just seem to get crazier the more you play. Most of that is due to the story, which twists and turns in some seriously weird ways as things get increasingly surreal. For some, that's going to be a bit of a disappointment since it actually feels like The Sandman might actually be the most light on horror (and jump scares!) compared to Uri's other games. The latter portion of the game is... different, to say the least, and extremely puzzle-heavy in a way that feels at odds with the more story-centric first half. Stick with it, however, and you'll discover some very clever plot points that take a unique look at mythology. The Sandman is definitely a strange little game, but it's one that's so strange it hooks you in to see how it ends, and with four endings and a bonus, it might not go the way you'd think. Despite not being what you might expect, it's still a creative game, by turns charming and creepy, and well worth a look.

I don't understand how to
escape the mall. I get to the bottom floor and throw the doll, but then there's a gunshot when I get to the bottom of the escalator and the walkthrough on the website just says to run out BUT THEY REFUSE TO RUN. I guess I'll just wait for the JIG walkthrough, because I also didn't understand how I was supposed to use the security card to get into the mall in the first place.

Can you describe more exactly what happens? When you say "they refuse to run" do you mean the game freezes? After the gunshot, Reagan should fall to her knees and the soldiers should turn around. There should be a bit of dialogue of the RUN RUN variety, and then you either run down automatically, or you just hold the down arrow and run yourself. (I don't know which it was because I was holding the directional arrow myself at the time.)
As for the security card,
If you're asking about figuring out the code, you'll notice that there are three coloured boxes numbered 1-3 on the grid that displays on the mall terminal outside the door. If you use the security card in your inventory, you'll see the exact same grid, only filled with numbers. Find where the coloured boxes would be in each row on the security card you're carrying since the placement corresponds to the mall panel, write down each two-digit number, and there's your code.

Head around the left side of the school and up. You're looking for a tiny brown shed all by itself, and if it's not in that screen, it's in the next one. Inside you'll find the ladder.
As for the subway,
you don't need to do anything here until later in the game. :) Even though you can open it right away, you can't do anything until the game prompts you to later on.

The thing to remember is that the demons are liars. If they tell you one thing, then the opposite is true. So for example, if one tells you they saw her run to the third floor, you know that's a lie, or if they tell you to look somewhere for her specifically, that's also a lie. You can find Anne by basically searching places that are the the opposite of where you're told.
And here's where Anne is if you just want the solution:
Anne is on the first floor. You need to find the cafeteria, and run behind the counter to the left and into a door. In the bottom of the storage room you find yourself in, you'll see crates of vegetables blocking a doorway, and interacting with one you'll be given the choice to push it aside. Do so, and you'll find Anne in the next room.

If you have the security card, interact with the computer panel beside the mall's entrance. You'll see a display that looks like what you see if you use the security card in your inventory. Comparing the two will give you the code.

You should be able to use items in your inventory that are written in white by selecting them with the [spacebar]. Doing so on the map, for instance, will open it and display the town for you. When you interact with the screen to the left of the door, above the panel to enter numbers you should see a grid. That grid is a clue that corresponds to what you see when you open your inventory and use the security card with the [spacebar], which displays a similar grid to help you decipher a code. If you DON'T see anything other than the number panel, and you can't use items in your inventory the way I've described, then it sounds like you've encountered a bug and might need to contact vgperson with your pertinents. :(

was Nixie meant to look like Rin from Mermaid Swamp? Maybe it was just a coincidence, but I thought her sprite looked a lot like Rin with the same hair and colour, and also the swamp she first comes out of looks like the swamp in, well, Mermaid Swamp!

trying to use the shovel on all the windows first before I even thought to try the door

I actually think Mermaid Swamp had better direction and subtle nudges, because in that game the main character, Rin, would say something like, "Oh, I bet I could use this to ___" or "This edge is sharp, I bet it could hack through something" so you would get a little hint as to what it was good for.

Actually, the running from the mall thing was a separate issue. The run as administrator fix is just for if you're not seeing all the images you're supposed to.
@elena: are you holding crouch when you throw the doll? That seemed to be what was causing the problem for me. The first time I tried when I wasn't crouching at that point I got through. Vgperson also said she would be uploading a version where this bug was fixed.

i cant get into the sandman's house, the walkthrough I found says "Continue on and check the small house. Go back to the plain and take the Littlogrow, and place it in front of the house" but i have no frigging idea what that damned plant is and checking the house isnt helping much, I can't really read the red sign thingy either cos "it has some writing, you can't read it" *is very tempted to throw my comp away*

To get the Littlogrow, you have to
stand on the left of the oddly-coloured log on the plain where yellow lights are floating around. You have to interact with the log from this very direction. You can enter it and after that take it with you.

You need to go talk to Nixie a few times (stand to the left of her when you do). The first time she mentions something she uses to stay youthful. The second time she'll tell you what it is and where to find it, and that can be used on the tooth to turn it into a baby tooth.

Hi Sophia! I do indeed have some tips, though they're pretty basic. :)
I was actually stuck at this part for a while myself. The key here is just to keep moving and not stop, keeping to the center of each hallway to avoid flames, and head for the stairs down (big black doorways) in each area. If you don't stop moving, he shouldn't be able to catch up to you, so if he's gaining enough ground that he's overtaking you even when you're not running into things or stopping, that might be a bug or lag. Hesitation of any sort is a killer. The biggest place I got stuck was on the third floor down where I couldn't figure out where to go because the visuals on the walls were dark enough that I couldn't make out the door, so you need to go up at the fork in that area and then to the left and up again against the wall to get through the door there. Once on the main floor, you just run to the right and then down out the doors. So yeah, just keep moving, avoid running into things, and don't stop.
It definitely takes a bit more reflexes than I'd like for the game it is, but at least it's not as brutally unforgiving as Uri's first game, Paranoiac, which I will hate until the end of my days. Sorry I couldn't give you any secret hints! :)

wander off by herself
is explained pretty succinctly at the end. It's an important part of her character, and there's a reason for it.
As for the security card, assuming you're looking for the one for the mall
once you've tried to get into the mall, you THEN need to examine the panel to the left of the door. Sophie will remark that it looks like it was made by a specific company. If you then head left (I THINK! Just search the streets.) you'll come across a car in the middle of the road with the security company's name on it, and be given the option to go inside when you examine in. In there, you can find the security card on the sleeping guard. It's important to note that you won't be able to enter the card unless Sophie first tries the mall door, finds it locked, and then examines the panel.
Hi everyone! I have gotten myself stuck in the following passage of the game:
I found the dust that got trapped under the stone statue in Sandman's house. I think I'm supposed to free it with the Wanderful Wand, but there is no option to do so for me.. The dust just keeps saying "Help! Help!" and when I open my inventory, the Wanderful Wand is greyed out and can't be used :( I tried every possible angle to approach the trapped dust, but I can't free it.
Can someone help please? I tried the walkthrough, but it doesn't offer any more information.

You need to use the stick, which you can find in the room with all the sand strewn around on the floor where you get the sack. That's the room to the left of the mirror maze (not the one that reverses you) behind the door that had the colour lock.

Without more information, I don't know where you're stuck. Have you gotten the security card first? You need to examine the painting in the lobby of the employee of the month, go all the way to the bottom of the map and into the stairs down to the subway, and then solve the puzzle at the gate using your cellphone as a clue. You can find the card on the man behind the gates.

It sounds like you're stuck in the mirror maze area where you mark your path with red. If you can't proceed forward after breaking the glass, you've either gotten a bug, or you haven't picked up the piece of glass in front of Sophie yet.

Start the whole thing after The Sandman captures you . I need something to carry that crying gel in, something to cut the lizard tail, and something to carry the green fire. But I searched high and low and found absolutely nothing inside the sandman castle.
I'm stuck (again) in the mall. I have
the cardboard box, I'm sneaking past the guards to the 1st floor (where the soldier guards the escalator), but then I can't seem to use the doll. I tried it with and without the box on my head. I tried to interact with the soldier guarding the escalator, too, with no results. Is there a special place to throw the doll, or something to do before?
Correction: that's not even the 1st floor, that's just the 2nd. Anyway, I can't get past it - any ideas?

Hi TE! Here's some hints. I'll break them up so you can choose how many to use in steps. :)
Once you've tried the mall door and seen that it's locked, have a look at the thing that looks like a sign (it's actually the computer terminal) right beside the door. Sophie will comment something about how it's a locking system made by a specific security company. Note the name.
The security company doesn't have any offices in town, but if you wander the streets, you might find something else helpful.
Somewhere on the streets you'll find a car that appears to be part of a familiar company. If you examine it, you'll be given the option to go inside where you can find a special card.
When you use the card in your inventory (open with [ESC] then choose the card with the [spacebar]) you'll see a grid with a bunch of numbers.
Go back to the mall and look at the terminal beside the door again. You should see a panel to enter numbers on, but above that you should see a familiar looking grid.
This grid is mostly blank, but you'll notice that some boxes on it are coloured in and are numbered 1,2, and 3. Make note of their placement and order on the grid.
Use the security card in your inventory again. This is what you'll use to decode the mall's security code, and those numbered boxes on the terminal will help you do it.
Use the grid you see on the mall terminal as a guide to help figure out what numbers you need from the security card, and in what order. The placement of the coloured boxes on the grid on the mall terminal will show you where the numbers you're looking for are, and the way those coloured boxes are numbered from 1-3 will help you put the code in the proper order.

in the sandman's house. I refused to eat the fairy food and have collected a "Snora Flora Fruit". I have had Lullaby translate the memo and the notice for me. I don't know what to do next. I still need to find a way to pick up the Crygel and a way to slice the tail off of the black lizard.
I am also stuck inside Sandman's house.
I have the tail,and the bag, and they are white it my inventory, and the bottle, but it's not white in my inventory, neither is the 2nd note. Does this mean another bug?
Can't figure out a way to get the crygel to stay still to collect it (is it because the bottle is grey in my inventory?), can't beat Sandman when he chases me in the mirror maze (yes I have the red footprints guiding), and can't get Lullaby to read the 2nd note. the jewel you find is a fake; earlier it was a clear jewel. Go to the next room and wash the jewel in the bucket of water, then use the machine to make a real pink jewel.

There's really no advice other than to just try to be as quick as you can and not stop or hit any corners. You're actually aiming for the other side of the mirror hall, in the room where you flipped the lever to stop the fire. Sandman is fast, but it can be done, you just can't hesitate or get turned around.

You need to get the Somewhere Key by going down the newly opened hole in the world map room. That key opens the door behind the angel statue that tried to sing you to sleep, which is where you can make the sleeping sand.

i am in the glass maze chased by the sandman. i broke the glass wall but whatever i do, i can't pick up any glass nor can i run to the ladder. i tried it about 10 times and it never worked. i tried to run the game as an administrator but that didn't work either... i am getting really fruustrated here

You just have to get to the other room, the one in right, as fast as you could. You should also lower the lever so that when you sandman will run after you, he will fall down the big hole where the flame is. Hope this helps lol.

You have to go into the menu and select Item. But, before this, you have to position yourself in front of Lullaby. After that you do as I said earlier and select the note you want to read Lullaby. He read, as it has always done. :)

If Lullaby can't go against the wishes of someone who is awake, and is supposed to fulfill their desire, then couldn't Sophie just have asked him to kill the Sandman for her? (Bear in mind, I haven't finished playing, so I don't know if that's some part of the plot/explained later or something, or if it's just a way to continue the game (which it most likely is :P))
What happens if

If you have glasses that translate the notes written in the language used by the Sandam, wear it and then select the note. You can read it with ease.
If you did not, try searching for the "Somewhere key" and then go into the room with the fire-breathing dragons.

You just have to wait until the time runs out and Lullaby will be in the room to save you. To lose time, try banging your head on the statue, yelling out the window, hit with the stick on his head, threw water on your face. You never know what can happen! :3

Do I get a good ending? I got bad ending 2 (one eye open) and bad ending 3 (invisible sweet heart) but I'm stumped as to how to get anything else! Particularly a good ending! Taking the pink jewel from Unicorn was the only decision I know I made that can be made different

You have to tell the Unicorn could keep the jewel, and then do the whole procedure you did for the final battle (of course there will be some changes after you said to keep the jewel of the Unicorn).

The key to the stone door is on the room to the right of the entrance to Sandmands place. When typing in the key, you start from the top left of the key to the top right then the bottom left to the bottom right.

to cut the lizard tail, you need to obtain a glass shard. You get the glass shard from using the stick at the glass maze room. Use the stick where the steps are at. You get the crygel fluid from the top right room at the entrance. Use the empty bottle on it.

No worries! The stick is in the room to the left of the medicine room. It'll be leaning on one of the cabinets in the left side of the aisle.

Sorry if my explanation wasn't detailed enough. You find the answer to the nine stones door at the room to the bottom right of the entrance to Sandman's castle. When you get to the nine stones door, a scene pops up showing the nine stones. Use the keys you've been using to move Sophie around to navigate through the stones. The first stone that is highlighted is the first answer to the puzzle. Press enter to lock it in. Then refer to the key you found in the bottom right room at the entrance and find the next stone. After you find it, lock in the answer again by pressing enter. Repeat until you get to the last stone and then lock in all your answers with the confirmation button at the bottom right of the scene. Hope this helps!

you need to move the red flame. i picked up the hide gloves, but sophie doesn't put them on and when i try to use them near the red candle nothing happens!

I've picked up the pink jewel and washed it in the bucket of water, and I tried to use the machine but it's not doing anything, and the crystal is no longer in my inventory. Is this a bug or am I missing something big?
hi i have two big problems
one: i cant seem to get the town map on screen i click on it and it doesnt pop up, i just stop being able to move.
Two: does the security card have anything to do with the map? cus i cant figure it out.

in the room with the statue that is trying to put me to sleep. I've got the mirror in my possession, it breaks when I try to use it, I've tried splashing myself with water, screaming out the window, toppling the statue, banging my head on said statue.. but I get game overs, whether I do anything or not. How do I get out?
Hi Hilary, you didn't break the game! You need
to do all of that, but also to play music on your cellphone. Just use it from your inventory. You'll be saved just in time. Do NOT use the mirror, it doesn't help, and if it breaks, you have to walk everywhere for the rest of the game!
Hey Dora, I've been trying to avoid seeking some help but I'm just really stuck at this point.
I kinda have the same problem as chickenchupachup where:
I need to move the flame to the stove or something. I've pretty much spent a lot of time running around the castle and nothing seems to help. I have tried using the hide gloves but it doesn't help at all. I've also noticed those unlit candles and I suppose I could have use them as a mean to transfer the light from the red candle but I can't seem to take them. I have done everything and talked to everyone but I seem to be missing something. Care to enlighten me? :/
Haha, nevermind. I solved it myself after eating dinner.
For those who gets stuck in this part:
You place the Crygel fluid into the pot first then you'll be able to grab the candle's flames with the help of the gloves. Yes, Sophie will grab the flame and not the candle.
I actually got the idea of putting the Crygel first when cooking up dinner. :P

Does anyone know any strategies for
the final battle with the sandman at the end? I've been trying and trying but I just can't figure out how to beat him. Every time I get close enough to swing the Wanderful Wand, I'm too close- and I get hit by the sandman. There's no obstacles I can use to avoid him either.
I just can't figure it out.
I don't know if you've figured it out by now but it's really simple. :)
All you gotta do is move down on your screen, the farthest you can from the "thing" that pulls you into the water. It'll try to get you, but won't be able to reach you.

I honestly do not know what to do next. I'm in Sandman's house, and this is where I'm stuck:
I got "Notice 2" -- the note on the wall in the small room behind the room above the glass stairs in the glass wall maze -- and have taken it to Lullaby, but I cannot get him to read it! I know that several others have posted regarding this issue, and I've tried the suggestions given, but he still won't read it and I cannot progress any further. I've looked everywhere on the internet for instructions as to what to do, but I can't find anything. If someone could give me explicit instructions as to what I should do if Lullaby won't read the note, I'd really appreciate it. I know that someone mentioned some glasses, but I haven't found anything like that, and like I said, I can't seem to do anything else . . . I don't even know where to find the singing statue mentioned in the walkthrough on vgperson's website.
If anyone could help me, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
I'm having trouble with the bonus story.
I gathered the leaves, water, and truants like the first secret memo says, but then I couldn't get into the sand production room. The sandman will not use the key to open it and the room does not show up on the magic mirror. Then, I noticed that the leaves, water, and truants were not in my inventory.
Is this a bug?? I'm gonna have to replay the ending of the main story for now and then see if I can save the game before I start the bonus, if it is a bug.
You don't get the glasses yet. I forgot in what order I did things because it's been awhile since I was at that part, but after reading vgperson's walkthrough again, I think you have to
go back to the door where Sandman started chasing you (in the room left of the maze where you got the red stuff), then the room with the world map, then the mirror maze (which reverses the controls), and then Lullaby should be in the next room with the tea table and garden. I think you have to ask him THERE. DON'T go back to the other room to ask him. And to get to the statue, you just go to the next room after seeing Lullaby in the tea room, where you'll need to find a few ways to make noise.
You will need him when
you need to get into the JP Gordon and Chase building. After going to the building first, if that's what part you are at, go back to the subway and enter the gate with the code on your cellphone and then check the sleeping guy for an item you need.
Oh, never mind. I think what happened was I didn't realize that it skipped through the sand-making room and went straight to the room with the map. So I totally messed it up by leaving that room, since the dust are in the way if you try to go there again. I got it now.

You need to do at least four things to stay awake. The choices are: bang your head on the statue (ow!), use your cellphone in your inventory to play music, use the bucket of water, use the stick, and use the window. Do NOT use your mirror or it will break and you'll have to walk everywhere for the rest of the game!
As for the items,
the stick is in the room with all the spilled sand where you get the sack (through the left side of the glass maze, through the door with the code lock), and the lizard tail is in the kitchen... you need to use the piece of glass you got from the maze to cut the tail off.

I didn't read the note that told me how to make the sleeping sand but I did now and it let me collect everything
I loved playing this game. I like how there are different endings (not going to spoil anything). I really liked the main character and I find it hard to like a lot of main characters. I have a walkthrough on youtube. If you need help just type in Glitternauseous and it will come up. But this site contains a great walkthrough.

having a bit of trouble. After the cutscene/flashback where Him and Sophie are eating cake, it goes back to normal time. I somehow managed to accidently skip the part when they are talking DX now I have no idea where I'm supposed to go, and I'm just wandering around the town like an idiot.

@SavDragon don't worry, you aren't stupid! I had problems with this too! What you need to do is
Go into your items inventory (press X), then choose the doll. Sophie should then throw it, distracting the soldiers. I hope that was helpful!

get the stick and go to the glass maze. I pressed the button in the colorful tile room (I think that's different from the maze), got caught by the sandman, didn't eat the soup, and had Lullaby read one memo and the recipe for sand. I can't find gloves, broken glass, the stick, or anything else that I need other than the snora flower. Was I supposed to press the button while being chased or?
