It's Halloween, and everyone's out trick-or-treating, including Japanese developer Choko-Chai's trademark three cats. When they visit the wrong house and end up locked inside, though (you'd think they'd have learned something from the passenger ship incident), it's time once again for them to escape. Hence, a moody Halloween escaper by the name of Three Cats in Halloween.
Navigation is mouse-only, as per usual: click on things to zoom in on or interact with them, and on the little white arrows to look around. Click inventory items to highlight them, then on the environment to use them, or on "About" to examine them up close. Some problems can only be solved with the special abilities of the three cats, so click the cat in the lower left to call them onto the screen if applicable, then pick the relevant cat and the trouble area. The "Save" button is self-explanatory (and useful if you're going for both of two endings).
Choko-Chai's games have a charm all their own; the puzzles are neither too challenging nor too easy, there's a changing cursor right where it counts, the cats' animated antics are hard to tire of, and the one time there's a puzzle that requires knowledge of something Japanese, the creator provides a Wikipedia link. The 3-D rendered environment makes an odd contrast with the flat-colored cats, considering that CC usually keeps the two separate, but that's easy to overlook.
If you're looking for an easy yet challenging escape game to lure you into the Halloween season, well, this is it. Trick or treat!

To see a closeup of an item, click the 'About' button.
Instructions for the colorblind are given in the walkthrough.

Exploration and First Three Candles
You start facing some Jack O' Lanterns on a cabinet. Check the lanterns - one has a CAT SHAPE under it.
Have a look at the cupboards. They are all locked. The left cupboard has five numbers with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 written in circles above them, the middle has a keyhole and the right needs four letters.
Room escape games always have something on the side of a piece of furniture - this is no exception. Take the CANDLE SNUFFER from the right side of the cabinet.
The painting above the cabinet is of a Jack O' Lantern with holes around it - looks like we need four blue shapes.
There is a crack in the wall to the right of the cabinet - click on it for a closeup. Summon the cats, then use the big cat to break the wall, revealing a CANDLE. Back up.
Turn right now, to a table with two chairs. Ignore the flap on the floor for now.
Look at the right chair - there's another CANDLE under the cushion.
There's a box on the table, but it's locked.
Stand in the main view of this wall (you can turn left or right) and wait for a while. Some colored lights will appear on the wall. Record their colors, but don't worry about their positions.
Purple, green, red, light blue, yellow, pink.
(If you're colorblind, don't worry about recording it - I'll tell you what to do).
Turn right again to a door with a window next to it. The door is locked, so don't bother trying.
Use the CANDLE SNUFFER to snuff the CANDLE (which you can then pick up) between the door and the window. Look at the wall below and to the left of the window - there's a loose brick. Summon the cats (in closeup) and use the middle cat on the brick to remove it (the brick, not the cat) and collect the BAT SHAPE from the hole.
There's nothing else to do here (apart from escaping, but that's much later) so turn right to the last new view - a gas burner and a mobile.
Collect the HAT SHAPE from the left of the burner (closeup). Notice the stand on top of the burner.
Take a look at the mobile and click on the key. Back up.
Summon the cats again and use the small one on the right on the mobile to dislodge the KEY. Pick it up.
Blue Shapes, Last Candle and Matches
Turn right. Use the KEY to unlock the middle cupboard and take the BOOK third from the right. Look through the pages until you find a PINK CELLOPHANE.
Go back to the books. Move them to the right until you can pick up a COFFIN SHAPE.
Use this PINK CELLOPHANE on the heater. There are numbers from 1 to 5 along the top and numbers 7, 8, 4, 6, 3 along the bottom. Does this look familiar?
It's a 'Ghost Leg' puzzle. You have to go down from each number, going along any horizontal line you pass, and record the number you reach.
The solution is:
73684
Use this code on the left cupboard and collect the COLOR BOX. You can open this right now:
Remember the colors from behind the table? They go to this box. Just press the colored buttons in the correct order and the box will open. There's no visual feedback, though, so don't start again if the button does nothing.
If you've forgotten, the code is:
Purple, green, red, light blue, yellow, pink.
For the colorblind:
Top left, bottom right, top, bottom left, top right, bottom.
Once you've opened the box, collect the MATCHES from inside.
Go back to the painting. Use the four SHAPES on their corresponding holes. Collect the CRYSTAL BALL.
Use the CRYSTAL BALL on the stand above the heater - collect the last CANDLE.
Ending 1
Place, and light, a candle under each Jack O' Lantern. Each lantern now has a letter visible on it:
SDRQ
Use this combination on the right cupboard. Collect the METAL POLE from inside.
Click on the trapdoor. Back up and summon the cats. Click on the left cat, then use the METAL POLE, middle cat and right cat on it in that order. Collect the BLUE CIRCLE KEY from the box under the trapdoor. Use this key to unlock the box on the table. Collect the DOOR KEY from inside. Use this key to escape. Congratulations!
The Candy - Ending 2
After you open the door, but before you escape, look under the lining of the box on the table. Collect the CANDY. Now escape. Even more congratulations!
