DoraTile FactoryAlright, brainiacs, time to grease up the ol' grey matter and get to work! Tile Factory by Jonathon Duerig placed second in this year's Casual Gameplay Design Competition #8, and for good reason. It's a puzzler that has you programming a factory floor by laying down various treadmills and devices to get to their ultimate goal... which is probably being used as a backsplash in some obnoxious thirty-something's "Tuscan Inspired Kitchen". Sigh. Destiny is harsh.

Each level has a certain goal that needs to be met, and your job is to set down a track of all the machinery needed to meet it. Just click on a tile on the menu at the bottom of the screen, and click again on the factory floor to place it. Competition 2nd place award winnerOnce you have everything rigged up the way you want it, click the test tab and hit the play button. If everything works, gravy! If not, you can just click stop, and head back on over to your tiles to play around with the layout. Although things start out simply with conveyor tracks you can rotate, before long the game ups the ante by introducing new requirements. Suddenly you've got to paint tiles too, and moderate how many are created, and how quickly. You'll also find yourself learning how to use sensors, which can be wired to specific devices so that those devices only activate when the sensor is tripped.

Of course, once you're successfully juggling all that, the game starts demanding more of you. Colours too easy? How about stencils? Just make sure to remove them before the tile reaches the goal. One set of tiles not enough for ya, Mr-or-Mrs Smarty McTilepants? Well, how about managing two of them, each with their own requirements, simultaneously? And of course you'll need to install rotators if you want everything facing the way it should be... hey, are you starting to sweat? If you start to get overwhelmed, don't worry; you can place and remove tiles without penalty, and you can take as long as you want to solve a level.

Tile FactoryAnalysis: Instructions are for babies. Or at least, that's what I tell myself every time I toss aside the instructions that come with anything that requires assembly because I've convinced myself I'm smart enough to "wing it". With minimal instruction beyond what tiles do, Tile Factory just hands you the tools and lets you figure out how to get to your goal. There's something very satisfying about hearing that mental click of things falling into place as you figure out what you need to do. The difficulty curve is also more of a difficulty-gentle-slope, and the whole game is exceptionally easy to get into.

As challenging as the maps may initially appear to be, however, they lose a lot of their brain-crushing menace when you realise you can basically just flood the factory floor with as many tiles as possible until you find what works since there's no limit to how many tiles you can use. Past experience has shown that some people find trying to solve similar puzzles with as few pieces as possible for maximum efficiency part of the fun, but a good chunk of us (yours truly included) are more of the "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" type. If you don't put in certain limitations on the tools at hand, you lose a portion of the challenge your gameplay might otherwise have posed.

joyejoye - I remember when I was a middle schooler and how unfair math tests were. I always got the right answer, but if I didn't show my work and do it exactly the way we had been taught in class, I would lose credit. What did it matter how I did it, I always griped, if I got the right answer? Too many puzzle games are like the humorless algebra teachers of those days. You will use the new tool we have given you for this level, comrade! Refusing to use the new tool is counterrevolutionary!

So it's fabulous to find a game that says, "Hey, new tool here, I think it'll be useful to you, but if you can figure out another way, knock yourself out." You'll never really finish the Tile Factory. Oh, sure, you can beat all the levels. But can you beat this one faster? Using less tiles? Using MORE tiles? Can you fill up the entire screen with tiles and make a hilarious Rube Goldberg machine? And in sandbox mode, you have no restrictions at all. Puzzle games don't have a reputation for being freewheeling, but Tile Factory proves that they can inspire creativity just as effectively as the loopiest webtoy.

JayJay - Tile Factory is precisely the kind of game I was hoping to see entered into this competition. In true sandbox fashion, the game includes a variety of elements and tools that allow for a broad range of solutions to each puzzle. The puzzles themselves are a cross between Manufactoid (which became The Codex of Alchemical Engineering) and Factory Balls, which Jonathon has indicated were both inspirations for his entry. Add to that a puzzle/level editor with which you are given a blank canvas to come up with your own puzzles (and even a way to share them, too!), and it's not surprising to see Tile Factory among the highest scoring games in our "SANDBOX" game design competition! Congratulations, Jonathon!

One of the best programming style games, although not as good as manufactoria in my opinion due to one unexpected problem - the possibilities are endless.
As Joye has said you always know you will finish each puzzle somehow as you can fill the board and program in some quite complex logic. Great game and a perfect addition to the contest, but one to try and if you dont like it move on, it will ony irritate you. If you like it then there is more than enough here for you to fill your boots

Woot!! This game rocks!! This was my absolute fave of the competition. Great job, and congrats!

So very happy with how my Obelisk solution turned out. I'd love to see how other people tackled it as it was by far the most troubling level in my opinion.

As for the game itself, I absolutely loved it. I can see how Codex was an inspiration, and I think that playing Codex (albeit one and a half years ago) had already given me a much needed experience into tackling these types of games.

Definitely my favourite game in the competition, despite giving me a headache.

I like your solution, particularly the clever method of applying solvents and stencils.

Mine is a bit more straight forward, though it takes much longer (13:06, 101 parts)

I love this game! It's stretching my brain... but I'm missing a concept. Can someone help me out? I'm not really interested in just the solution to this level, I want to figure out how these darn switches work.

I don't get how to ignore a conveyor belt. Maybe I'm putting too much thought into it, but would someone mind looking at how I've got my level configured (needless complexity and all) and advise me on how to get that last set of switches to run properly? (I hid level code in a spoiler tag for post readability)

I appreciate any help you folks can give me!

@CrankYanker:

You can't have a single conveyor switch from one direciton to another.
Instead, you can cross the streams :-D but only one stream can run at a time.

@CrankYanker: What you need at the end is to push a tile off the main belt. Here's an example:

Here's something I discovered:

One paint can/stencil is between 2 sprayers, each pointing in a different direction. If 2 tiles from 2 different conveyor belts pass the sprayers AT THE SAME TIME, both will be applied (AT THE SAME TIME). 2 birds with one stone ^_^

That's how I passed 'None' without actually using 'None' :P

Amazing game so we really shouldn't nitpick: anyway, a tiny suggestion for improvement, very tiny compared to how great the game is! Suggestion: I'd like if this game also gave some indication of how much RAW material we use and WASTE, since some faster solutions tend to waste material or 'crash' material (tiles, paint, filters, etc.)

@Dom:
Very cool solution despite the total time; that's pretty advanced and tidy use of set-clear-mem and remembering state changes. I don't know if I'd have had the patience to figure that all out.
My approach has been more to aim at raw speed. Did 2 or 3 decent speed Obelix designs and this one below does 0:48. Not TOO clumsy I think: 'only' 76 parts, but should be able to reduce that a bit by "tuning" this design - e.g. I think the SEVERAL sets of different "timing" MEM modules can be done away with and replaced with just one set, and the gluing can be reduced to one gun I think.

IkdYgSRV3Hh3wWyUtf9vJX0F/28xf9Y1+w/8kJXV+/ATl2G6U=

But being lazy to tune up, instead, I only tried improving the speed by using a brand new approach, trying to use the most "direct" path (i.e., ensuring the white tiles are not "doubling around" anywhere, if you see what I mean?) But as you can see (BELOW) that approach means the first three white tiles gotta be destroyed, because the first two triangle (filter) tiles cannot possibly reach the first three white tiles on time... in fact, I suspect 0:48 is the fastest time possible for this Obelix puzzle (or perhaps one or two tiles faster but that's all; because, as the white tiles are using the most direct path, there's no way to improve total time except perhaps if those first three white tiles can be made use of.)

I realize that this can be improved by:

potential improvement:
1. the three filters can be be made to be sprayed simultaneously from 3 directions (left, below, right), thus reducing time to approx 60% although it would add a bit of extra initial setup time.
2. I improvised a 4-step "counter" on the top left! It's made up of four set-clear-MEM sets, thus counting linearly: just four "flags". But, I'm guessing this can be improved to use just 2 Set-Clear-MEM sets, with "binary" counting: 00, 01, 10, 11 or perhaps easier 00,01,11,10.

@roomescaper55 (August 30, 2010 10:41 AM)

To solve "Memory" puzzle:, hope this helps:
Hint:

Hint #1: look at the orientation of the target. What do you notice about the rotation of the two target tiles, RELATIVE TO to the orientation of the STENCIL tile? See that first target tile is 90 degrees anticlockwise relative to the stencil... the other target is 90 clockwise. See? So we want to turn odd numbered tiles anticlockwise, and even numbered ones clockwise...
So the solution lies in COUNTING: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5..." and noting "odd, even, odd, even,... " or simpler: "1, 2, 1, 2, ..."

Hint #2:
if you couldn't figure out how to count "1, 2, 1, 2...":
firstly, we need TWO rotation tiles, since we need one for anticlockwise and another for clockwise.
Now, for the counter: Use two MEMs. In the example (tutorial), they have an example of 4 MEMs, which counts "1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4,...". Use the same idea for a 2-piece counter.
Then, note that on the first count ("1") we want to turn the tile anticlockwise... and on the second "2" count we want to turn the tile clockwise. I.e., connect one of the MEMs to the two rotation gadgets... first try connecting just one MEM to one rotator, and see what happens; then disconnect it instead connect to the other rotator and observe... then try moving the other rotator one tile further and see what happens...

After experimenting as above, then you should be able to figure it out. Else: here's my approach to it:

is it possible to rotate the tiles more than this and still complete the level on rotators? I have a thing for solutions that are awkward and use required elements as much as possible, e.g solution to rotators = as many rotators as possible, solution to sensors = as many sensors as possible. thanks!

this is an incredible game. i love that there are so many ways to solve each puzzle, especially the advanced ones. i particularly like how you can fall into a solution after playing around a bit.

for instance, i worked on the Czech flag for a while, only to solve it in the most abstract way.

BEHOLD!

So far I've completed every level except for Tank and Crown. I know I can probably manage Tank with maybe an hour of work or more, but I'm just too lazy to do it, and looking at Crown depresses me because of the potential complications and the time it would take to fix said complications, so would anyone mind putting up a solution for these two? Thanks in advance. If you need any solution to a level other than these two or user-made ones, I can give my solution :P

I've copied my original Czech flag solution from the comments below the game on the actual CGDC page, and now a second solution I came up with. I'm putting these as examples of how there is more than one way to solve the same level, in an easy, side by side comparison.

First, original solution:

7 Minutes, 213 Parts. Im sure it could be much easier, but don't ask me right now which tile does what and why right now. Im just happy that it works after two hours ;)

FYI, I've set up pages to post optimized levels at the community site:

There is also a new release (1.4) linked there.

This was a very challenging game! Watching your awesome creations makes me feel so tiny :) Anyways, i managed to complete "sunset" after all. Slow, and it smashes some paint but at least i made it! :D I could not find a way to not smash anything (timing to create new tiles), and i had to choose between tiles and paint to smash..

Here is mine, I'd like to see someone do it better!

WOW! I love the creativity I see on here.

@ Dom, although it took longer, I enjoyed reverse engineering yours, well done Sir.

And sadly, I did not realize you could double click a rotator to reverse it until I saw Sohan Fernando's post :(, but now my game will be easier after finding out!

Thanks!

Sensorless obelisk (1:06, 86 parts, can be reduced to 83 parts).
Not a single resource is wasted (only one cleaner per 4-tile set, only 2 glues per 4-tile set).
Not a signle sensor is used - everything runs on timer!

I don't think I can beat 1 minute on obelisk without wasting tiles...

Several people have posted Obelisk solutions here. The best time so far seems to be 0:48. Above, Sohan Fernando a solution that does Obelisk in 0:48 with no wastage using 76 parts. Here is my solution that does Obelisk in 0:48 with no wastage using 71 parts.

I solved Obelisk in 0:47. I was aiming for 0:46, but I got into some trouble with the glue, and I had to slow it down. Perhaps some clever person can achieve 0:46. If so, please post your solution. Here is my 0:47 solution:

Can someone help me? I'd like to restart the game--I played through several levels a few months ago, but I find I need to remind myself of some of them. However, I can't get it to start over. Is there something i can delete from my computer?

Well, as always POTP--I figured out where cookies were in Chrome.

Hey, duerig--are you still checking in from time to time on this discussion? Because there's something about the "Some" function I've never understood. But won't waste your time if you're not around. I'll check back.

Another solution to 'blue twist', in 0:40 with 67 parts. This slightly abuses timing to apply both the paint and the solvent on the same tile in the bottom corner. The only waste is the stencils and solvent applied to the very first tile (which isn't painted until it's second run through), this can be solved by lengthening the conveyor feeding tiles into the loop, so that the paint has time to arrive, but increases the time taken to 0:41

Great game, very addictive! Crown took me hours, check it out I don't think it could get much faster than this. I haven't bothered refining it, it's a mess but I'm scared to touch it now.
