Mikemike-tombscape2-screen1.pngNow that the Mayan apocalypse is nigh upon us, it is only natural that we doomed mortals should develop a keen interest in all things Meso-American. Be it in summer blockbusters, tabloid articles, or even browser-based point-and-click adventure games, audiences will be looking to their popular media and entertainment for insight and assurances, before the beginning of the fourteenth b'ak'tun ushers the end of civilization as we know it. Consider Tombscape 2 as an example. Crafted by the atmospheric adventure-wrights at Psionic, Tombscape 2 casts the player as an explorer of Mayan ruins, whose quest to understand the mysteries of the pre-Columbian ancients may help you forget the impending advent of the end times.

The interface is typical of point-and-click games: Use the mouse to collect objects, move about the ruins, and solve puzzles. The puzzles are engaging but fairly easy, with a lot of finding the code here that unlocks the door there. The mood of the game is perhaps more important than the difficulty. With well-rendered visuals, appropriate sound effects, and some interesting environments, Psionic does a good job of creating a sense of discovery, though with a heaping helping of hoary pulp-adventure cliches as well. Beware of some gratuitous jump scares as well.

In addition to puzzling, the scavenger hunt aspect of the game is also very important. While you can complete the game without collecting and photographing every item you should, you will not discover the mysteries of Tombscape 2 unless you do so.

Tombscape 2 is short, simple and not wholly original, but it is a well-made and evocative bit of point-and-click adventuring. It may also provide some measure of distraction before the inexorable tide of Armageddon casts the temporal realm into oblivion. Best get to the adventure then, while there is still time.

Quick warning:
Half-way through the game, there's a "jump scare".

There's another jump scare right at the end. Even though I read kenshiro's warning and the synopsis, I still wasn't ready. Good thing I played in the afternoon instead of the middle of the night!

I enjoyed the collecting aspect of the game more than the puzzles. Saying that, it would be nice if once you get to the last screen you have the option to turn around and find the objects you're still missing. I got to the end with everything except one of the eternal flames (thinking it would be in the final scene), and to my dismay the only button I could push was the escape button.

Great replayability for a ten minute game. Simple but good! Like all their games, lots of eye candy. Having that one screen without anything was the only aggravation.

Ugh, I hate those stupid "jumpscares" as you call them. So lame.

Really good game, though I wasn't expecting the jump scares. I'll have to go through and try to find the things I didn't get, like all the eternal flames.

I'm not normally very good at escape games, but this one I got out of without consulting the walkthrough at all. It's simple, but fun.

I just went through it for the second time and can't find one of the eternal flames. I suspect a bug, considering it seems like I'm not the only one...

Reply

I did find all of the eternal flames, so I don't think there was a bug....the last one was just before the end screen.

I enjoy these combo-style point-and-clicks, where you split your time between object-hunting and collecting photos and items.

I think I'm about 3/4 of the way done, but can't find the square key anywhere ... *sigh*

Reply

Okay, I got through. If, like me, you are having trouble finding the square key, here's a hint.

In the Skull Cave, I easily found the tablet with the clues to open the coffin, but had a lot of trouble finding the coffin itself. It's against a back wall ... not really hidden but just difficult to see. Once you open it, the square key is inside.

Thanks, JIG, another fun mini-adventure!

That was a bit of fun...what?

I failed to find the required number of any items the first time I played, so I replayed to make sure I found everything. I did find all eternal flames, a couple of them you really have to look to see them.

Not bad, the scary parts weren't, um, scary. but the graphics were intense! I had a little trouble finding all the flames, but other than that, the quest was a good one.

Enjoyable!
Of course I had to try the prequel, as the game had a button for it. Felt a bit strange that #1 was more IndianaJones-type with timing and traps, and this #2 was a sweet little seeking game...
I prefer the #2.

Infuriating game with bad mechanics and puzzles you just have to guess to solve.

"The first is itself times 3" = 9 for some reason

Not worth your time.

basseq:
"The first is three multiplied by itself"

Not random guessing, just math.

Reply
muddgirl May 11, 2010 1:14 PM

No guessing involved, basseq. The first clue is

"The first is 3 multiplied by itself". The "itself" refers NOT to "The first" but rather to 3:

3x3=9

Let me know if you need help reading any other clues :)

...yeah, the first room has me confused. I'm apparently not counting the right number of shapes somehow. Help! (I'm not usually this slow, but I keep staring at it and it's just not clicking.)

Andipants May 12, 2010 5:56 PM

...ahahaha ignore my previous comment, it turns out I don't count well when I'm not paying attention. Or when I'm stupid. :D

awesome game!It wasn't that scary. The only thing that surprised me was the

skeleton in the coffin

It was really easy accept for the coffin in the skeleton room, which was hard to find.

I am seriously stuck on the first screen. Somebody HELP!!!!

The Skull Puzzle:

I solved by randomly clicking on skulls until they all disappeared. I still have no idea what the pattern was or even if there is one!

Reply

The Skull Puzzle hint:

is a matching game...match 2 identical skulls and the disappear

Reply

Just curious, what would you rate these "jumpscares" on a scale of 1 to 10 in scariness? I kinda get easily scared, lol.....

Reply

Regarding the Eternal Flames:

There are two in the first room. One to the right that's easy to spot, and one on the left, towards the "back" of the cave, that's not so easy to spot.

I didn't notice this until the second play-through.

Beginning Room Walkthrough:

What to Do:

Count the shapes on the stone and use the ancient tablet to find what that number is in Mayan Numerals.

Answer:

Triangle:8
Square:3
Circle:4

The scary scenes got me... I'll admit that..
This game would have been even better if

it was ''new missions'' instead of having to unlock coffins with the same methods all the time.

Reply

I actually found everything in my first try, without walkthrough help. Very unusual for me. But a good game, and both me and my sister got scared on that coffin jumpscare. xD

The jumpscares are awesome!

who makes these games?

Chromestone April 30, 2011 5:57 AM

@ M_Girl, Psionic makes these games.

Also I nearly died of the Jump scare called

Skeleton in the Coffin

BTW, how do you do the Tangled Serpents in the

Hall of the Serpents?

Im having a lot of trouble on that. Also what does the

Second Jump scare at the end

Look like? I have heard complaints about that as well.

Happy gaming!

Chromestone.
