Utopix

DoraUtopix, available free online through Facebook or on iOS and Android with cross-platform play to save your progress from mobile to desktop and vice-versa, is a stylish little puzzle game about flipping tiles and matching pictures. The goal in each level is to make the playing field look like the grid on the left by clicking a tile to flip both it and all other immediately adjacent ones. Doing so will swap the colours of those tiles according to the progression on the right side of the screen, such as from green to orange and back again. The kicker is that you only have a limited amount of moves per level to make your grid match up with the goal, and when multiple colours to cycle through get added in, well, it's not as easy as it seems!

UtopixWhile Utopix starts off extremely easy, after the first handful of training-wheel levels the difficulty begins to climb. With two hundred levels, including the option to make and share your own, it's a lot of content to work your way through, and the colour-cycling mechanic is a nice twist on a familiar concept, though players who are colour-blind may have some difficulty with certain hues. By the time you've fought your way to the expert level, those small, tightly designed levels will start to look like mountains, and working your way through the bigger stages is a satisfying challenge. It's a little weird that the game essentially mocks you for using functions it has available, like the undo and solve level mechanic, which comes across as a bit needlessly combative for an otherwise pleasant and fun puzzle game. Man, stop picking on me, Utopix, or I'm going to find a teacher!

Teasing aside, Utopix looks fantastic, with its slick presentation and zen-like soundtrack, and its simple-to-learn, tap-and-play mechanics make it a great fit for mobile devices. It doesn't hurt that the included level creator for people to make and share their own games within the game itself means you've got the potential for even more content at your fingertips. Utopix is a great fit for mobile devices with its tap-to-play mechanics, and the optional cross-platform functionality means you can pick up where you left off wherever you are... you will need to log in to Facebook to take advantage of it, but the app will not post anything on your behalf. If you're craving a puzzle game that'll keep you busy for a long time and twist your brain, Utopix, with its great presentation and simple but challenging gameplay, will be a welcome addition to your library.
