DoraViking QuestBeing a little kid is hard. The adults control the television remote, you don't get to pick your bedtimes, your parents think they're being clever when they force you to wear cute shirts proclaiming how kooky they are... and, of course, nobody lets you take part in the really cool pillaging and slaying because they think you're too small. Viking Quest is a point-and-click puzzle adventure created by Denis Mordvintsev and Konstantin Timofeev about a little Viking girl who just wants to prove she's every bit as capable as her father. Easier said than done when he won't let her come along. Geez, did you ever hear of Take Your Daughter Maraudying day buddy? I bet Erik, Baleog and Olaf never had to put up with this.

Just click around the environment and try to find a way to help her get closer to her goal. The cursor will change to a grabbing hand when you can interact, you can drag items from your inventory to a place onscreen to use them, and moving the cursor to the left or right edges of the screen will give you a green arrow if you can move to a new area. (Man, do these ancient Vikings have some sophisticated integrated UI tools or what? I just have to rely on my stupid old eyes.)

The artwork by Tani Zelensova is both adorable and beautiful, with imaginative, friendly character designs. But while it's the sort of game you can happily enjoy for its great presentation and charm, some minor annoyances keep it from being a home run. Having to wait for the little victory/failure animations to play out can get frustrating, especially when you're using items everywhere to find out what to do next... which can be fairly frequently since the lack of item descriptions in your inventory can both make it hard to identify them and lead to some obscure uses. But hey; are you going to let something like that stand in the way of capturing a beast and eternal glory? Viking Quest is cute, family-friendly fun for everyone, even if you don't have a magnificent beard to call your own.

What you need to know:

As per review, you have to wait for an animation to end before you can get anything else to work. If you try an item with a hot spot before the previous animation has finished, you won't get any reaction.

All item combining happens automagically

Capture a dragon!

To do this you need to get the boat ready which needs the following:
A sail.

From sleeping sailor screen.

A rudder.

Outside of cave.

Some food to attract the dragon.

Basket on boat. Fruit outside of cave.

A net to catch the dragon in.

Get well handle from Genie. Use on well. Collect fruit if you haven't already and enter cave. Give pipe + leaves??? next to sleeping sailor to blacksmith.

Something to fix the dodgy plank on the boat.

Barrel of tar from blacksmith.

A compass.

Get beer by playing the barrel subgame. Just make all the pipes connect. Give to blacksmith.

A bow

Give rope from boat + branch from Genie to beer barrel bloke.

and arrows

Play the Genie subgame and win a jewel. Give jewel to sleeping sailor to gain coins. Give coins to beer barrel bloke.

Once you have all of that it is time to sail.

Having trouble loading the game. Just getting a white screen. Firefox. Will try other browser.

@Neo, I've run into this problem fairly regularly lately on games hosted on the JIG server. The fix for me is to disable my ad-blocker on that page, then reload. I don't know why this started happening, and can't promise it'll fix the issue you're encountering.

I do love my Firefox but, when it comes to playing Flash games, Chrome is always better... faster... stronger. (Chi-ti-ti-ti-taaa)

a walkthrough in the works?

Game has potential but needs to be cleaned up. Movement between screens isn't fluid, slight lagging in other areas too. Game play is towards random guessing of which items go to which person and having to wait to retry an item is annoying. Visually looks good though and conceptually isn't a bad idea, just needs work. 3/5

@Paul - See my notes above, that should get you through, everything you need to know is there. Shout if you get stuck.

mdb, yeah i didn't realize your post was a walkthrough until after i posted mine. i do have a suggestion though

the last puzzle with the arranging of 1-25, i'm not good with those slider puzzles. do you think you Post step by step directions on how to get to solve it? other then that, great job.

Reply

Most of the gameplay consists of giving random items to random people and getting a random item in return. There needs to be a clear relationship between those for it to be good. Try everything on everything is a failure state of the player who can't solve a puzzle. It should not be the primary mechanic to move forward.

The slider puzzle is the last thing to do and putting in a detailed solution here would take ages. I solve it by sorting the top row, then the second row and finish by solving the last two rows together. It isn't that difficult (for me, I know some people hate them) so keep at it until you work out how they work.

@Mystify - I agree. The try everything with everything is made worse by the animation which causes this process to take ages.

i spent over 5 minutes and came nowhere close to solving it MdB. that's why i said an easy way to solve it step by step might be an idea here.

Sliding Puzzle Solution:

(this may not be the 'best' solution, but it's the shortest I could come up with)
The numbers indicated the number on the tile you should click on, not its position.

  • 13, 11, 7, 15, 5

  • 2, 6, 4, 8, 3

  • 1, 8, 3, 5, 2

  • 3, 4, 6, 11, 7

  • 3, 4, 5, 2, 15

  • 3, 4, 15, 3, 4

    • This should complete the top row.

  • 7, 11, 6, 9, 10

  • 14, 8, 5, 15, 6

  • 9, 8, 14, 10, 12

  • 9, 8, 12, 9, 13, 11

  • 8, 12, 15, 6, 7, 8

    • This should complete the second row.

  • 12, 15, 9, 10, 14

  • 9, 15, 13, 11, 12

  • 13, 11, 10, 15, 11

  • 10, 15, 11, 10, 13

  • 12, 15, 11, 14, 9

  • 10, 13, 11, 14, 13

  • 10, 9, 13, 14, 15

[Edited so it's correct. Sorry. -Kyh]

If the animation is slowing you down, right click and set the quality to low. Just don't do that during the cup game!
