Virtual City 2: Paradise Resort
In the world of time management/casual simulation games there are plenty of Build-a-Lot clones, so it was exciting a few years back when a new player entered the field with Virtual City. Rather than concentrate on building or development, Virtual City took the genre in a whole new direction by focusing the gameplay on the movement of goods, services, and people. Now, G5 Entertainment is back with Virtual City 2: Paradise Resort, which takes the transportation madness to new and interesting heights.
Transportation is the not-so-hidden secret of how cities work. You can build skyscrapers, office buildings, and factories, but without some way of moving raw materials, goods, and people, the whole thing falls apart. Water, Rail, even Flight can be good ways of moving goods and materials over long distances, but within the confines of a single city transportation like that is dependent upon trucks. Good thing you own a trucking company, isn't it? The game consists of over 50 levels, each a small town or city that is in need of some good infrastructure building.
An annoying woman will pop up at the beginning of each level and give you the lowdown on what needs to be done. Does the local populace need something to eat? Perhaps you need a pie factory, the simplest of the merchandise "chains". To get pies to the general populace all you need is a wheat farm, a mill to grind the wheat, a dairy farm for butter, eggs, and milk, a bakery to bring it all together, and four trucks to move all of the materials and finished product. As the game progresses you will be faced with longer and more complex chains to create more complex goods, as well as other challenges to bring the current city or town up to snuff.
Actions are completed with a simple click of a mouse. A tabbed menu at the bottom shows each level's goals, keeps tracks of vehicles, and has the handy construction menu for building necessary houses, roads, tourist destinations, and the like. Each level will have its own unique requirements you need to meet before you can move on. The game begins with a basic stock of certain buildings which are added to in the "R&D" lab after each round, using the investment points earned by finishing a level. Complete a level in a certain amount of time and you earn gold, giving you more investment points to upgrade or to buy new types of buildings.
G5 Entertainment has added some new twists that shake up the gameplay pretty quickly when compared to the original game. In Virtual City 2 you not only have to worry about the movement of goods and services, but the movement of your town's inhabitants (and tourists) goes front and center this time around with the addition of office buildings, motels, resorts, and the like. What good are office buildings if people can't get there to work? And what good are resorts without tourists? With a limited amount of vehicles that can be run out of headquarters the challenge becomes how to balance materials transport, people moving, and garbage disposal without your city coming to a virtual standstill.
Analysis: So many time management and simulation games tend to rest on their laurels, creating game after game with the exact same gameplay updated only with new visuals (cough, Farm Frenzy, cough) so it's nice that Virtual City 2 avoids that trap. The visuals have certainly been upgraded with the new buildings and the like, and the backgrounds are filled with lovely details that catch the eye. What makes Virtual City 2 exciting, though, is the new twist on the gameplay that certainly causes any veteran to rethink their strategies as the levels progress.
The graphics are bright and colorful, the animations amusing, and the lively music is a perfect fit for Virtual City 2. As you travel from the Beehive state to the Sunshine state to the Silver state and The Last Frontier (that's Utah, Florida, Nevada, and Alaska to non-US natives) the background scenery changes accordingly, as does the weather. Those who have played the original Virtual City will recognize the animations of the little vehicles as they go about their duties, as well as the animations of the factories which have also been joined by trains, boats, and even planes leaving and coming back taking goods and returning tourists on certain levels. All of these factors combine to make Virtual City 2 a treat for the eyes, ears, and brain.
If there are any complaints they are minimal, mostly involving the amount of instruction available for what makes a truck, dumpster truck, or bus more efficient and profitable, leaving you to flounder a bit and figure it out for yourself. Other than that there is very little to complain about, making Virtual City 2 a fun and frantic way to spend a lot of time trying on various civic improvements. Take Virtual City 2 for a spin and become the trucking magnate you've always wanted to be! Just, you know, try to avoid the teamsters if possible.

General Info
Environment/Visitors/Happiness/Jobs
There are five values you have to take care of, all of which are shown on the top right sight of the screen. They are: Environment, Population, Happiness, Jobs and Tourists.
Environment and population will always been shown, the others only when there is a requirement for it.
Population
Shown in the green bar; shows the amount of people living in your actual town.
The more houses you build (or upgrade), the more residents you will get. The amount of residents also depends on your environment values.
In an environment with low environmental values, the houses will be not fully occupied.
When the environmental rating deteriorates during the level, residents will move out and come only come back when the environments values are written yellow or black.
If residents are ill or a fire breaks out, the residents will move out until the fire is extinguished or the illness cured.
In addition, each upgrade brings you the same number of residents as the house had originally; in a small house 2 per upgrade, in an average 4 and 6 in a large house.
You will not get rent - you earn money by transporting the residents to the supermarket, an office or an entertainment building.
Environment
Blue bar; this shows your environment values.
Negative impacts of buildings such as factories, garages and so on are not limited to houses that are nearby; they affect the entire city.
In areas where environmental values are low, you will have difficulty maintaining existing populations and/or getting new residents.
A value in the red numbers is negative - people leave their houses, and there will only remain one resident per house.
A value in the yellow numbers is a tolerable range, half of the residents will remain in the house.
A value in the black numbers is ok - the houses are fully occupied.
The environmental value is always important when you need a large population for transport or job/happiness ratings.
The environmental values can be increased by special buildings (well, square, monument, etc.).
Also, the entertainment building (theater, club, museum, etc.) have high positive environmental values.
Factories have generally negative environmental values; however, upgrading will let you raise the environment value.
Houses also improve the environmental value by upgrading.
Happiness
Orange bar.
An eco-friendly environment is not enough to raise the happiness value. You need to provide the residents with entertainment in form of restaurants, theaters, fitness clubs and other entertainment buildings.
Transporting residents (or tourists) to these buildings will increase the happiness value.
How much happiness points you get per busload depends on the size of the building; hover over the building with your mouse to see the points.
However, if you are bringing people, others will leave the club, restaurant, etc. and thus the score drops back a little. Therefore, your goal must be to bring more people to the building than people are leaving; this will increase your happiness value.
A second way to increase happiness for a short period is to use an action at the "place".
There are various actions (party, hot air balloon ride, holiday, etc.); all will add different scores to the happiness value. Use this option (if the place is allowed to build) to catapult the happiness value at the end of a level.
Jobs
Yellow bar.
In many levels you'll need to achieve a certain job rate.
Each office will show a number of employees who can work simultaneously.
Upgrades increase the number of workers.
The rating system works just like the entertainment buildings for happiness. You bring in people, few leave the building again, and the value slowly rises.
The difference lies in the number of available jobs.
An example: Your goal is a 300 job value. A small office provides 100 jobs, upgrading will raise the amount to 150 jobs. In order to achieve the job->rating you need more than 300 available jobs, because there are always people leaving the building.
With two offices of 150 jobs, you can never achieve a 300 job rating. There need to be either an upgrade or even another office.
Always make sure that each office is adequately served by buses, while at the same time, that all the offices are adequately distributed.
At the same time, you will need to make sure that you have enough people in town or enough people to transport from neighboring towns or the railway station or airport.
If you only have residents to transport to the office, you usually need about 1/3 of the needed value (so for our example: 100 residents).
The more residents / passengers you have, the faster you reach your goal.
Visitors
Pink bar.
The visitor value works the same as the job value. You bring visitors to the building, while some will leave; take care that you bring more than leave so that the value increases steadily.
The hotels have a maximum amount of guests, so you need more space than the guests value requires.
Tourists come by bus from the train station, airport, or from other cities.

Buy 1 truck, upgrade it 1x.
Upgrade the grain farm 1x.
Route the truck grain farm->dairy farm.

On the left side of the office, build another living area with bus stop and ten houses.
Get one of the buses from the right side and re-route it to the left bus stop an the left office.

Build the steel mill in the lower middle, left of the plastic factory.
Remove the two houses across and build a cable car factory.

Build the wool farm where the cosmetic factory has been.
Demolish a house across and build a fabric factory there as soon as you can afford it.

Buy 3 buses and upgrade them to the max.
Upgrade the bakery, printing factory and the trucks with magazines and pies 1x.
Build the ski resort.
Route the buses airport ->ski resort.
Deliver 5 magazines and 5 pies to the ski resort.
Demolish all factories you do not need anymore; do NOT demolish the steel mill.
Sell the trucks.
Buy 3 buses and upgrade them to the max.
After the opening of the ski resort, route all 6 buses airport->ski resort.
Demolish the last factory and build 3 fountains.
Florida
2.1 - Pace - Fun in the Sun
Upgrade the grain farm and mill 1x.
Route the cake-truck away from the supermarket to bakery->airport.
Upgrade milk-truck 1x, grain-truck and flour-truck 2x.
Buy a truck, upgrade 2x and route it oil derrick->airport.
Upgrade the oil derrick 2x.
Upgrade the airport 1x.
Route all available buses away from the supermarket; each bus only from1 bus stop and to the nearest entertainment building!
Buy 3 buses and upgrade all 2x.
Route all these buses airport->one of the hotels.
The bus routed to the low right also should stop at the club.
Build garages.
Build a fitness center as close as possible next to the two low left and let the buses serving these hotels stop at the fitness center as well.
Upgrade all living areas 1x.
Upgrade all buses to yellow.
Upgrade the serving buses to red.
Upgrade all factories and trucks completely.

2.2 - Sneads - Day at the Beach
Extinguish the first fire (you cannot move on without following this tutorial step) and build a fire station to take care of the rest.
Re-route the already driving recycling-truck: recycling plant plant->Altha (middle left).
Buy a truck and route: Altha->train station (top).
Upgrade both trucks 1x.
Build a medium hotel at the beach, lower part of the scene at the crossing.

It is not that important where to build the cosmetic chain, just make sure that the cosmetic factory isn't too far away from the supermarket.
Upgrade oil derrick, recycling plant, oil-truck and recycling-truck 1x.
Build the grain farm, dairy farm and the extract factory.
Trucks: grain farm->extract factory, dairy farm->extract factory.
Upgrade the dump truck 1x.
Build the cosmetic factory.
Route trucks: extract factory->cosmetic factory and plastic factory->cosmetic factory.
Re-route the truck bringing magazines to the supermarket (make sure you brought enough): cosmetic factory->supermarket.
Upgrade all buildings of the cosmetic chain and all trucks 1x.
2.4 - Perry - Now That's Entertainment
Build a bus stop at the place where you had to build the dumpster.
Build a fire station where ever you want.
Build an entertainment building ($8,640) near the bus station.
Buy a bus, upgrade it 2x, route it from the bus station to the entertainment building.
Build 4 medium houses in the area near the bus stop.
Add the entertainment building to the dump truck's route.
Go to the top right side, build a dumpster and bus stop.
Buy a bus, upgrade it 2x, route it to the entertainment building on the left side.
As soon as you can afford it, build an entertainment building ($8,640) on the top right side.
Re-route the bus to only let it go between the bus stop and the new entertainment building.
Build 5 medium houses in the area near the bus stop.
Go to the low right side and do exactly the same there.
Until you have enough money to build an entertainment building let the bus go to the upper one.
Upgrade both dump trucks 1x.
Upgrade the garage 1x.
Buy a bus, upgrade it 2x.
Route it: top left bus stop->entertainment building.
Upgrade the top left living area with the help of the bus stop.
As soon as you can afford it, build a second entertainment building in this area - route the bus to both buildings.
Do the same with the other two areas; buy a bus, upgrade the living area, build a second entertainment building .
Upgrade both dump trucks 1x.
Upgrade the living areas until you have 300 residents.
2.5 - Rosehillford - Threeway
Build a way to the first living area.
Buy two buses, upgrade one bus to yellow and one bus to green.
Route each bus to one of the hotels.
Buy two more buses and let them go to one hotel each without upgrading.
Upgrade the green bus to yellow.
Upgrade both hotels 1x.
Upgrade the blue buses to green.
Upgrade the garage 1x.
Build the way down.
Buy three buses, let them go to one hotel each.
Upgrade the upper hotels to the second star.
Upgrade blue buses to green, green buses to yellow.

2.6 - Branford - Applying a new Foundation
Build a medium office on the free space on front of the garage.
Buy 1 bus, upgrade it 2x and route it: bus stop left side->office.
As soon as you can afford it, build an entertainment building ($8,640) next to the oil derrick.
Buy a second bus, route it bus stop->office->entertainment building.
Upgrade the bus 2x.
Build 10 medium houses in the area in the service area of the bus stop.
Build a fire station.
Upgrade the dump truck 1x, add the new buildings to its route.
In the living area top left, build a bus stop next to the dumpster and place a medium office at the top (demolish the two small houses for the office).
Buy 1 bus, upgrade it 2x, route it bus stop->office.
Demolish the grain- and dairy farm.
Make the street a bit longer on the right side of the office and remove the rest of the streets in this area.
Build a medium office and route the bus to this office as well.
Buy a second bus, upgrade it 2x, route it bus stop->both offices.
Build 10 medium houses in the area in the service area of the bus stop.
Buy 2 buses, upgrade to yellow, route one per living area.

Heal 1x illness, then build a hospital and a fire station left next to the garage.

Build a entertainment building ($8,640) above the hotel.

Buy a bus and just route it hotel->entertainment building.

Playing it the first time, Oak Hill is a pure gamble whether you reach gold time or not. At a later stage, when you are able to update all factories, it is pretty easy.
Build the road to the oil derrick and the saw mill.
Build the paper fabric near the saw mill.
Build the recycling plant. Keep in mind that you will need a plastic factory a bit later and want it near the oil derrick and recycling plant.
Buy a dump truck and add all buildings to its route (do not forget to do this new build factories as well)
Buy a truck and route: Paper fabric->saw mill.
Upgrade the truck 2x and the saw mill 1x.
Build the plastic factory near the oil derrick, buy a truck and route: oil derrick->plastic factory.
Buy and route a truck recycling plant->plastic factory.
Upgrade recycling plants 1x.
Build the paint factory near the oil derrick.
Buy and route a truck oil derrick->plastic factory and one truck oil derrick->paint factory.
Build the street to the harbor (low right).
Buy two trucks and route:
paint factory->harbor
paper factory->harbor
Deliver 7x paints and paper to the harbor.
Build the street to the train station (low left).
Re-route the trucks delivering to the harbor:
paint factory->train station

Upgrade the garage.
Build the fabric factory half way between harbor and train station.

Now upgrade all factories and trucks as far as possible to reach your income. Do not forget to upgrade the dump truck as well.
Two extra tips when it does not work out:
As the plastic factory is sitting so close to the oil derrick, you will soon have a huge amount of oil there. You may want to re-route the truck on regular basis and always change between plastic and paint factory. This will raise the production of the paint and give you more income by delivering more paint and as this, get more products in return.
It does not work out with two trucks (one for the paint-, one for the plastic factory as the trucks then need to wait for service at the oil derrick). Just re-route when ever you have around 30 oil barrels on stock)
From Kate2001: "I ended up building a second plastic factory right next to the airport and upgrading absolutely everything to maximum. For a while it kept going near to $5,000, but not quite there, but in the end, it did."
2.10 - Odessa - An Entertaining Proposition
Re-route the two already driving buses and let them only stop at the airport and the upper medium hotel.
Upgrade the oil derrick (left) 1x.
Buy a truck, upgrade it 1x and route it oil derrick->train station (low left).
Upgrade the airport and both buses 1x.
Buy 3 buses.
Route one airport->upper small hotel.
Route the upper two train station->each bus to one of the hotels in the lower part of the scene.

Buy a third bus, upgrade it 1x and route bus stop (middle)->office.
As soon as you can afford it, build an entertainment building ($8,640) above the office.
Add the office to all bus routes.
Build a medium office left above the recycling plant.
Re-route the bus serving the middle bus stop, remove the office of its route and let it go to the new office.

Build a small office near the living area and route all buses to this new office.

You shouldn't build tech stations in this level - the area is so big that it will cost you a fortune. One of the tricks of the game is that a truck or bus will always break in places which are not covered by tech stations. In this level it is much easier to simply repair buses and dump trucks as needed.
Go to every living area and make sure that there are living 50 residents in the service area of the bus stops. If not, build houses as needed.
Upgrade each bus 1x.
Build an office - depending on the space small, medium or big - as close as possible to each individual bus stop.
Buy a bus, upgrade 1x, route bus stop->the office.
Upgrade all dump trucks 1x and add new buildings to their routes.
Have an eye on the environment value - build environment buildings to keep the value in the positive range. Offices have a negative impact to the environment.
You will need a plaza, so you may start with building one first.
Upgrade the living areas one by one.
Upgrade the small hotels 1x.
Buy a second bus for each living area, upgrade to yellow, and route to the hotel.
Upgrade all buses to red.
When you reached all goals except the happiness, start a holiday at the plaza.
4.9 - Lund - Tree Hugging
Upgrade the dairy farm, grain farm and mill, as well as the trucks serving this buildings.
Upgrade the bakery and pie truck 1x.
Slowly build the street from the supermarket to the airport.
Re-route the pie truck away from the supermarket and to the airport.
Buy a bus, upgrade 2x and route airport->small hotel on the left.
Add the hotel to the dump truck route.
Upgrade the grain farm, dairy farm and mill 1x, but not the trucks.
When you have $5,400, build a bakery near the supermarket.
Re-route the trucks with grain, flour and milk away from the old and to the new bakery.
Now upgrade these trucks 1x.
Upgrade the new bakery 2x.
Upgrade the pie-truck.
As long as the old bakery has enough goods to make pies, let the pie truck go there; re-route to the new bakery when the old one can't deliver anymore.

Once you deliver 5 products for the slot machine factory, demolish the factory the product is coming from.
Build the Casino.
Route:
slot machine factory->Casino.
Longdale->Casino
furniture factory->Casino
Sell all trucks you do not need anymore, except one.
Buy 4 buses, upgrade 2x and route train station->Casino.
Upgrade the train station.
Upgrade the oil derrick and the truck delivering oil to the train station.
Buy more buses and route train station->Casino.
Upgrade the yellow buses to red.
Remove a house from the right side of the train station and build a second oil derrick.
Upgrade the oil derrick and a truck to three stars, route new oil derrick->train station.
Buy buses for all empty slots, route them all train station->Casino.
Open the casino.
Upgrade train station to 3 stars.
Upgrade all buses to red.
Bring 3000 passengers to the Casino.
