At the end of the day, the important thing to remember is not whether you seized it—it is about whether you've learned what needs knowing and are ready to apply that knowing to the unknown: i.e. tomorrow. Well, tomorrow will be eventually upon us, dear readers, but for now it's worthwhile to have ourselves a bit of vacation. A get-away-from-it-all-and-forget-yer-troubles sort of thing. That is where our illustrious friends, the room escape game designers, speak from the heart. Whether hurrying through the midst of a bustling city or lazying near an island beach, everyone needs a chance to escape. Thus Weekday Escape is just what everybody needs! This time around FunkyLand is red all over with a return of the whimsical Candy Rooms series, Yuri's darling chicks give hide-and-seek another go, and Yomino Kagura presents a puzzling A-B-C...
Candy Rooms No.15: Crimson Red Modern - The whimsical goodness keeps coming and we couldn't be happier about that. After all the candies, fruits, rabbits and dodoes, it's obvious we can count on FunkyLand to deliver a quick escape from all that is dull and colorless by creating a world of rooms we long to live in, never leaving. Crimson Red Modern is no exception although it's useful to know about a unique aspect in the user interface: not only do you navigate by pointing-and-clicking, as the "How To Play" menu points out, there are times when clicking-and-dragging need be employed. Other than that, the puzzles tend toward the usual, nothing that would surprise or stymie a player, experienced or new. Yet the atmosphere is just so modern and elegant, you'll feel like a VIP guest in the most exclusive boutique hotel money could buy.
Chicks Hide and Seek 20 - by Yuri holds all its charm in the pure adorableness of the title characters. A school of ten baby birds who want you to go seeking out their hidden study tools before they're willing to leave class. The focus is more about finding and using items that the scholar chicks need rather than solving puzzles. Most are at their desks just waiting to be "found" but one of the ten is so well hidden, you might be hunting pixels long after the bell rings. The lack of code breaking or clues to decipher makes this episode short but it's equally sweet. A good getaway from frowny edges and grumpy thoughts.
Escape from the Room of the Alphabet Picture - Yomino Kagura's "Room's Room" creations are not about whimsy and cuteness, they are more budget motel than ritzy hotel, and the background story is always a little vague. Just why do we keep finding ourselves locked in this same room time and time again (you'd think we'd have thought to get a second key made by now)? And who keeps sneaking in when our back is turned to re-arrange furniture and set-up new puzzles? Yet, though subtle, the room does have personality—a certain playfulness, a love of riddles, that makes me think it'd be a great setting for a theme party. The logical clue presentation and clean design mean you can navigate your way through the game and still put your feet up, a cool drink in hand, forgetting the rest of the day's affairs.
We love escape games, and our readers love talking about them and sharing hints! How about you? Let us know what you think, ask for clues, or help out other players in the comments below.
