Weekday Escape

JessIt's a beautiful spring day (or so I imagine). You're walking along, a spring in your step, so carefree that you can't help but whistle a happy tune... but what's that? A pay phone is ringing. You look left, look right—no, there's no one else around. Is this a joke? You hesitate, then meander slowly over to the still-ringing telephone. You sense that perhaps you ought to keep on moving, that something is not quite right with this scenario, and for a moment your hand trembles above the receiver. But no, you're being silly. Maybe someone's dialed the wrong number? If so, you really ought to let them know. You pick it up....

Evito BallA flash, a sense of falling. The world spins and your stomach wrenches. You stand there, stunned, eyes blinded by the brightness. And then, somehow, you understand... you're in the White Zone.

White Zone is an intriguingly different sort of room escape game; as you might have gathered, it does not take place in any sort of concrete space. There are no walls, no ceiling, no door; instead, the player is faced with a few pieces of furniture—two chairs, a television, and a dresser, to be exact—arranged in a circle, seemingly suspended within a white void. Some forgotten corner of the Matrix? Perhaps. The setting is ethereal, spare, almost dreamlike—do not, however, mistake its seeming simplicity for a lack of substance.

Indeed, it's amazing how much puzzle-y goodness is fit into such a sparsely-furnished environment. You can examine each piece of furniture from all sides, and you'll need to do so; as the game progresses you'll find yourself flitting back and forth between chair and dresser and television, each time uncovering a different clue or necessary item. Happily, the puzzles (with one very significant exception) are largely logical, dependent mainly upon observation of patterns and keen attention to detail, and should pose a healthy but not excessive challenge to most escapers.

I say "with one very significant exception" because, at least to me, the game's final puzzle was baffling. Not in the good way, either; even after I had lucked into the answer, I didn't really understand how one was supposed to arrive at that particular conclusion. I'm pretty sure I found all the relevant clues, too... still, there's certainly a good possibility that I'm just being dense, and that the answer is dancing a merry jig in front of my nose. In any event, I look forward to seeing what y'all come up with. ;)

Potential flaws aside, I greatly enjoyed White Zone for its solid puzzling and surreal aesthetic. It's refreshing to see such a unique interpretation of the term "room escape"!

Pick up the phone, it's for you:

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

WALKTHROUGH

  1. Answer the ringing phone and get transported to the white place. Press the red arrow to go forward and look at the TV.

  2. Go to the left side of the TV and click on the little slot. Note the arrows.

  3. Go to the chair beside the TV and look at its back. Click on the circular slot towards the top and note the symbol there.

  4. Go to the chair beside the dresser and click the left rotational arrow once so you're looking at the side of the chair. Click the diamond shape where the back meets the seat and input the arrow sequence on it. If you did it right, a compartment will pop out. Grab the fuse thing inside it.

  5. Go to the back of the chair beside the dresser and click on the circular slot towards the top. Note the symbol there.

  6. Go to the front of the TV and view the knobs at the
upper right. Click on the button several times until it pops off.

  7. Go to the back of the TV. Click on the black space below the gray thing in the center. Put the button from the front of the TV into the slot at the right to open the compartment. Put the fuse inside. Go around to the front of the TV and note what it says.

  8. Click the space beneath the front of the TV near the right leg. Note the circles and numbers there.

They match up to the knobs and button on the front of the TV. If you've done everything right up to this point, the message from the TV screen should make a little more sense.

Look at the knobs on the front of the TV and rotate the top one until it comes off.

  9. Assuming you've done everything up to this point, put the big knob you got from the TV in the matching slot on the back of one of the chairs and set it so that it matches the symbol you just covered up by putting it there. The TV now has another clue. Do the same thing you just did to get and place the first knob (don't forget to set the knob to the correct position!) and the TV will have a numerical clue.

    72605

  10. Go to the dresser and open the drawer. Note the pattern inside. Click towards the top of the drawer and note what you see:

it's a 1 with an exclamation mark above it.

  11. Look at the clock on the dresser. The clue from inside the dresser is indicating something about the clock

Look at where the red dots were in the drawer pattern and compare that to the clock. You'll see 4 symbols in the corresponding places. Those symbols (#$%&) correspond to numbers on your keyboard (3457). Figure out what numbers both the short and long hands of the clock are indicating. This is different each time you play the game.

  12. Go to the chair beside the TV and click the right rotational arrow once. The top of each of the chair's legs (that you can see in this view) have a place to input a digit, with either an "L" or an "S" above them. Use all the clues you got from the clock to input the correct numbers.

The "L" stands for "long", so input the number that corresponds to the keyboard symbol that the clock's long hand was pointing to (it's either 3, 4, 5, or 7). "S" stands for "short", so do the same for the short hand.

If you did things correctly, when you zoom out back to the side view of the chair, you should hear a sound.

  13. If you did the last step correctly, a panel should have shown up in the arm of the chair beside the TV. Open it up and take the key. Use the key on the cabinet in the dresser. Dial the code from the tv on the phone and.....

I have it on good authority (Jay) that links such as the above in comment No. 1 should not be used. Apparently the sites with 24 in the name are not trustworthy. The links in the review are working fine now.

Reply

Sillybuttons is right, please don't ever post links to the 24 sites here. They are unscrupulous, they steal copyrighted content, and should not be visited under any circumstances. The sites are riddled with adware and malware.

Reply

503 Service Temporarily Unavailable whenever I try to open the game.

Reply

The link in the review isn't working for me, probably because there are a lot of people trying to access it. I'm using the link from the first poster. It seems fine for now.

I'm stuck, though.

I've gotten the little knob off of the TV and found the fuse and put it into the back of the TV so that the front says "2" then a counterclockwise arrow, then "unlocking".

I've also inferred that the L and S on one of the chairs is probably referring to the long and short hands of the clock, and seen that 4 symbols (#$%&) are arranged around the clock face.

Reply

Sorry about posting the 24 site link, it was just the first working link that came up when I googled White Zone. Didn't have any experience with them...now I know!

Reply

I have temporarily changed the links to an acceptable mirror of the game until traffic evens out enough for the developers' own site to handle it.

Refresh the page, and it should work for you now.

(And thank you for understanding.)

Reply

Thanks, Jay.

Now, I've gotten a little further.

Don't know where to input this numberical code I get from the TV screen.

Reply

WHAT? I finished already? Is there a secret ending?

Walkthrough coming, I guess...

Reply

I think the last puzzle is quite logical, after all. Do you know that

the drawer can be taken out completely?

After that one just has to use

the long/short hand spoiler

After everything is correct there will be a sound meaning that

the key is available. It is in

the right armrest of the right chair.

Reply

Hey, wait, I didn't have to use the drawer in the dresser at all. But everything seemed to fit pretty logically. Was their any use for what was inside the drawer?

Reply

Stuck on TV code here, also found...

Numbers and Symbols in the TV stand leg

Reply

The L & S spoiler isn't helping me because

The short hand points to 10, and the dial only goes up to 9.

About the L&S Spoiler

The clock hands are pointing to more then just the numbers on the face of the clock the 4th post here hints of it

Reply

When you pop the drawer out of the dresser you see a "!" above a "1" implying the "1" key on your keyboard. The L and S are the long and short hands of the clock. They're pointing at other symbols on the clock. The "S"hort hand is pointing at "$" and the "L"ong hand is pointing at "%".

The "$" is 4 (because holding shift + 4 gives you "$". The "%" is 5 (because holding shift + 5 gives you "%" Set the left dial to 4, the right one to 5 then you get the key from the arm rest. Use the key on the cabinet. Now I'm stuck w/ you. What do you do with the phone?

Reply

Also regarding the L & S spoilers

The hands aren't pointing to the same symbols in every game, but the hint is still valid.

Reply

I'm out!

After you open the cabinet w/ the phone, go back to the TV and click the top knob a bunch of times until it comes off. Put it in the back of the chair w/ the "no smoking" looking symbol and make sure to rotate it so the marking it is the same angle as the diagonal line in the symbol. Now go back to the TV and click the lower knob until it comes off. Put it in the back of the other chair and rotate it so the marking points down. Now the TV will give you a 5-digit phone number to dial and escape.

Reply

I'm out too! First time I did it without help!

Reply

Surprisingly short, actually. Nice.

Reply

I had found the knobs and codes from the TV but how do you get the cabinet open?

Reply

When you get the TV Screen to display 2 and that directional symbol and the word unlocking, go to the front of the TV and press the top button until it comes off.

Walkthrough

Move forward to the TV. Click the bottom button until it falls into your inventory. Then, rotate to the back of the TV and put the knob in that hole. (you have to click the black slot under the grey dome thing)

Click the rotate arrow on the right, and then click in the slot. Notice the arrow code (Down up left right up)

Go back to the front of the TV. Click the right arrow twice to change screens. While you're looking at the chair, use click the left rotate arrow once. You'll notice a light spot beneath the arm. Click on it to bring up a diamond with 4 smaller diamonds in it, and enter the arrow code.

Take the fuse and put it in the back of the TV.

Rotate to the front of the TV and press the top knob until it comes off.

Go right two screens to the chair where you got the fuse. Rotate to the back of the chair. You'll notice a hole. Take the switch from the front of the TV and put it in the hole, making sure the raised part of the knob that you grab on to lies up with the darker spot in the hole.

Go back to the TV. Take the third knob. This time, click right three times. Rotate to the back of the chair and insert the knob like you did the last one.

After you insert the knob, rotate once to the right. Below each leg, you'll notice a dial that changes the number displayed. S is 4 and L is 5. Go back out to the side of the chair, and click on the arm where a spot appears. Take the key.

Go two screens left, and unlock the cabinet with the key.

Rotate to the TV, get the 5 digit number

Put the number in the phone.

No problem, Jay. I've been around for a little while and haven't really contributed anything (I think you might have met me on the IRC once as Mpot), so I'm happy to help out.

Reply

Thanks, Jay! It finally dawned on me how the good walkthrough makers numbered the spoilers :P

Reply

Just a note to say that for those playing in the UK

our keyboards our set up differently so the keys don't equate to the symbols but have a look at LSN's walkthrough for the possible number combinations

Reply

Oh, My walkthrough is partly wrong. I thought

You had to make the big knobs on the TV the same as their symbols on the back of the chair in order to pop off the little knob.

Drats.

Taybo, I think yours is a little wrong, too.

The numbers for the chair legs (and the clock hands' positions) are different with each playthrough, so they won't always be 4 and 5.

Reply

LSN: Would you please tell me what to change in your walkthrough and I'll edit it for you?

Reply

Nuts ... I'm using a german keyboard (Might be because I am german ... never know) and the "#" is not even referring to a number ... pretty hard to solve then. And "$" = 4 / "%" = 5 / "&" = 6 ...

Reply

There is a clue not mentioned in the walkthrough:

Zoom in on the clock, and press the lower right of it. There is a triangle with letters on a font similar to that on the chair. They must have some significance. A secret ending, perhaps?

Reply

Points for being a little bit more handicapped accessible with the visual cues for the necessary sounds. The punctuation code seemed like it would give color-blind people trouble, though. Nice little game!

Reply

bluemoose19, I saw that one too, and was wondering when it would come into play.

In fact, seeing it before

I figured out the L & S dials on the chair

really threw me off.

Reply

I don't know if it was a coincidence

but I used the code on the TV to get the key and to use the telephone

Reply

For getting the key. # on the keyboard is number 3 when you push Shift not 4. Number 4 is $ when you push the Shift button. So the first time I played the game 3 was S and 4 was L. But the numbers do change after that....

Reply

bluemoose19 and sunflower, regarding the

info you get by clicking the side of the clock - the K S L triangle

that totally threw me off, too, since I thought it was referring to

the clock numbers which line up with the S & L positions on the triangle, namely 8 & 4, respectively (bottom left and right)

but now i realize, having read the walkthrough and finished the game,

that the triangle is telling you the location of the key - the K is at the top of the triangle, and the key is in the center of the arm of the chair above the S & L dials.

No?

Jess, your intro reminded me of this comic:

http://www.shigabooks.com/strips/fleep/scrollindex.html

Quite long, but very good!

Reply

Actually, now that I think about it, someone should make an escape game based on that comic!

Reply

Wow, when I submitted this game, I didn't think it would have been up so fast...unless someone beat me to it. lol. That's ok. I am still trying to figure it out. :P I'll avoid the walk through for now. [chuckles]

Hey all

Thanks for the news about the 24 sites. I always thought they were a little goofy. I got sick of them a while back.. And then I went there one time in for ever... And the minute I Downloaded a game I got a trojan.. Thank Heavens for a good program to remove it.. sheeeesh. I have not been back there since... OK..
Have a great day. Thanks. Iceebear

on spoiler 9 the code changes each time you play.. here is what I got.

MY clock read 10:05.. SO it really threw me since there were no numbers 10 on it.. lol.. I realized I had to use the keyboard numbers for the S and L.

Would it be possible to add a note to the review saying that people with non-US keyboards need to look at spoilers to be able to solve the game? Or would that, too, be too much of a spoiler? It's just really frustrating to devote a long time to figuring out a puzzle only to find out that it isn't even possible to solve it without help.

Good game, although some clearer indication that the drawer could pop out would have been good

Reply

Short and easy one - perfect for a casual game.
I didn't find the final puzzle illogical - I don't even know which one should be called the "final" puzzle anyway :)

Good game.

Reply

Anyone found out how to use

that pattern-thing in the drawer under the clock?

Seems like it has no function.

Reply

I really love this game, but in fact I'm not able to finish it, because of my keyboard (german -.-) :(

Reply

I agree with all the posters who complained because of the keyboard problem. Great puzzle, yeah, unless you're one of the 6.3 billion people who doesn't live in the USA...

Reply

That's interesting commentary considering this game comes from Japan.

Reply

I did it without any spoilers! I'm so proud. It's interesting though...I didn't know that

you could pop the drawer out--I sort of figured out the symbol thing on my own.

Yay me!

Reply

I looked this up; Japanese keyboards apparently have the same symbol/number mapping as US keyboards do, at least according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout . So it's not a matter of "all non-US based people", but there are a lot of UKnians, Germans, Swedes etc who enjoy these games, and we all have different layouts :-)

Apart from the keyboard quibble, which really is a minor point, it's a very nice game. I enjoyed it very much.

Reply

The number changes on the TV every time, so that shouldn't be in the walkthrough.

Reply

You can change the time on the clock by pressing the left triangle on the chair where you get the fuse. Not sure why though.

So I see no mention of the small code on the side of the front right leg of the television. This code has the numbers 2, 3, and 1 in that order from top to bottom, and beside each number is a corresponding circle. any ideas on the significance of this?

turn.around.kid.

Reply

the code on the lower right TV leg is

the order that the buttons pop off, and the size

Reply

I beat the game, but apparently skipped a large part of it somehow.

I didn't use the clock, the design in the drawer, the symbol on the back of the TV, the things on the TV leg, or any of this keyboard stuff. I got up to the numbers on the TV and entered them alternatingly on the chair legs. That unlocked the key. @_@

Reply

Joel, apparently

the last two numbers in your TV code happened to be the same as your chair code. Chance of that is what, 1 in 99? So not common, but not astronomical either.

I'll note that this is by no means a newly released game. I played it via FGN back in March.

Reply

I skipped that part also. Did the same thing.

Reply

Jay: If you're still up for editing my walkthrough, here's a short, easy edit that fixes the problem, but it requires one to "take note" of clues before they're really needed:

Step 6 should read "Go to the front of the TV and view the knobs at the upper right. Click on the button several times until it pops off.

So there's no nested spoiler in step 6 anymore.

If you'd like me just to repost a new walkthrough, I'd be more than happy to. Or you could use someone else's walkthrough if you'd like.

Reply

Got it, thanks, LSN. :)

Reply

I tried using the key on the cabinet but it didn't work. Drag and drop - right?
I even started the game again in case it was something temporary.

Reply

As soon as I posted that the key fit of course...
I swear I tried many times before but just ignore my previous post.

Reply

I acquired the key by chance, but because I hadn't taken the correct path to get there, the key wouldn't open the door. Weird. Seems like a key would be a key no matter what.
