When Alice fell down rabbit hole, she fell into a world of madness. When you fall into psyAlera's free indie fantasy visual novel, Zayay, most of the madness seems contained in a strange bunny man. Zayo is what you would get if the white rabbit was less worried about arriving at his destination on time, and much more easily distracted. Odd, random, and sometimes too sickeningly sweet, Zayo seems like the perfect candidate for a romantic simulation, but there is something very off about this whole thing. Not only are you unsure why you are there and can't remember your purpose, but Zayo, your guide whether you want him to be or not, keeps dropping little hints that he is not what he seems. He will offer five different places to go and explore with him, each with their own choices. Besides that, the only options you really have is how to respond to such a weird fellow. With five different endings and secret extras, can you figure out what the mystery is behind this just a little too adorable bunny?
Zayay can be a rather confusing game. You are dropped off in this world with no background, but there is a lot going on. There are hints of a rich past but you are never really told anything, and characters are briefly mentioned that you never meet. Another thing that can lead to confusion, especially if you're trying for all the different endings, is the randomness in the game. Zayo's replies change, sometime due to small decisions you've made, but more often than not, they just change with no rhyme or reason. This can be both bad and good as it is hard to tell what choices are needed for different endings, but when you replay, you're not just going through all the same dialog. It can give you more hints about who and what Zayo is, and a bit more about the world, though honestly it doesn't really change the ending. While there are hints of romance, Zayay is actually a rather dark and creepy game. If you're looking for lighthearted fun, butterflies in the stomach, and beautiful endings that leave you with a sigh, I'd actually NOT recommend this visual novel. If you want a very complex character to figure out, explore a unique world, and debate what ending is really the best, then step right up. Zayo is ready to take you on a tour you won't forget any time soon.
