Ms.45My name is Ms .45 and I am an Arkanoid-clone addict. I love, love, love brick-breaking games. However, I'm not a sloppy Arkanoid addict. I expect my clones to be interestingly designed, with innovations on the basic gameplay and that little extra something to make me want to go back and play again and again. I first encountered Jardinains! several years ago, and only recently realised that—hey! Jay is Games doesn't have a review of this fantastic game! So I was really pleased to head back to the Jardinains! website and find a whole new version ready for me to download.

Jardinains 2The little extra something in Jardinains! is the presence of 'nains—giggling little garden gnomes that will hurl potted plants at your bat, paralysing it and causing you to lose points. You can get your own back, though—if you can break the pot you win the points you would have lost, and if you can knock the giggling little bastards off their perch, you can bounce them on your paddle to get points and power-ups. If they spawn too fast, you'll end up stuck with a big stack of flowerpots on your bat and seemingly hundreds of them giggling inanely at your misfortune. It's like Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, but with garden gnomes.

The sound effects and power-ups combine for pretty satisfying experiences. If you get an ice cannon, you can freeze the gnomes for gnomesicle-bouncing fun. An ice ball freezes the bricks, increasing the area frozen as you hit the target and making them shatter with a most gratifying sound. My favourite is the slow-motion power-up, resulting in bad action-movie moves as the gnomes yell "N - O - O - O - O - O..." as they fall.

While you have to pay to get the full version of Jardinains! 2, the demo is essentially a full game—the paid version gives you more levels, power-ups and different 'nains (look out for the pirate in the demo version). Jardinains! 2 contains the levels from the previous version of Jardinains!, but if you have trouble with it, you can also download Jardinains! 1.2. Oh, and for those of you who have complained, yes, this game is available for PC, Mac, and Linux.

I love it!
Is there a list, where you can see which powerup does what?
So far I found:

Ball-related Powerups:

  • green turtle: slows the ball

  • fast forward (as on musicplayers): Makes the ball faster

  • flame: gives you a fireball, that blasts away the blocks (my favorite!)

  • snowflake: gives you an iceball, blocks turn into ice. Hit a block twice, it will burst an freeze the neighboring blocks.

  • fork: makes your ball split

Paddle-related Powerups:

  • horizontal arrows pointing outwards: makes the paddle grow

  • horizontal arrows pointing inwards: makes the paddle shrink

  • magnet: paddle holds the ball until you click your mouse or hit a gnome

  • funny sign like a computer mouse: tiling on the floor - if you miss the ball, it is reflected by the tiling. First hit, the tiling changes color to dark blue, second hit, the tiling vanishes, third hit, ball is lost.

  • no parking sign: shrinks your paddle to almost nothing and speeds the ball up by ... well... a lot. Survival is far from guaranteed. (thanks Sarah!)

  • blue cannon: paddle grows an ice cannon, shoot by mouseclick.

  • red cannon: paddle grows a fire cannon.

  • Blocks hit by cannon behave as if hit by the corresponding ball. There are also powerups that gives you a crossfiring cannon or two cannons, but I dont know the sign for them.

Gnome-related Powerups:

  • sling: every gnome on the display falls down

  • star with angry face: makes the gnomes angry, the gnomes are multiplying faster and throwing more flowerpots

Score-related Powerups:

  • gold dollarsign: gives you 1000 points

  • silver dollarsign: gives you 10000 points

  • star with red heart: gives you another life

  • Signs I haven't found out:
Something like a "non-parking"-sign (red). Anybody know, what this does?

I too played Jardinians years ago, and I can't wait to try out version 2! Simply THE best brick-breaker game out there (IMHO) and certainly well deserving of a post here at JIG (I was very surprised there wasn't a review already!). Now to get my other 2 favorite games up here, Kumoon (a baby chick shooting missiles/shotguns at piles of boxes? what could be more fun?!) and 'Creatures' Docking Station (breed, teach, feed, and then bury your very own alien species! Affected by digital DNA, they grow and change over many generations.)

Oh, both sound where, i like the creature one though, where can i find that? ;o? And btw, i'm a breakout game freak, so this is happiness. not to mention i get to torture garden gnomes!

Such a great game, I love those crazy gnome guys. They're just so...so...so...gnometastic.

Somtimes I wonder if games like this exist soley to insite hatred in garden gnomes.

Well, after several days of messing around with it, I finally figured out how to get Jardinains 2 to play on my comp! I hafta change my "color quality" (under "properties") from 24 bit to 16 bit to get it to work. Hopefully this helps anyone else having troubles playing the second version. Also I must say, Jardinains 2 is quite fun especially the new powerups but it runs rather slowly (at least on my comp) so the original version is still my favorite!

Here are some cheat codes (for Jardinains 1, still looking for codes for Jardinains 2!) for all you cheater cheaters out there! =P Simply pause the game by pressing [P] then press the [`] (same key as the [~]) and enter a code below!

Grants 30 lives

gomomgo

Makes 'Nains pop up everywhere!

they're everywhere
Use with
caution! =D

Powers up the ball into super ball! =P

upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart OR
uuddlrlrba now works
in version 1.1 and up (which everyone should have, I think!)

Takes you to the level of your choice.

20goto##
Place a level number where ## is. (e.g. type 20goto42 to go to level 42)

You will know if you have entered a code correctly if you hear a 'Nain say
"whoa!", and incorrectly if you hear a metal clang noise.

P.S. I hope this turns out right, this is my first big venture into using HTML tags ^^; Jay: perhaps some sort of "preview post" button would be lovely! =D

The "no parking sign" powerup shrinks your paddle to almost nothing and speeds the ball up by ... well... a lot. Survival is far from guaranteed.

@Sarah: yeah, thats a really bad one.

Found some more:

  • rabbit: speeds up the ball

  • big arrow with vertical line: slow motion (slows ball and gnomes, flowerpots and powerups in falling)

  • I think that the difference between the rabbit/turtle pair of powerups and the fast forward/slow motion pair is that the former only affects the ball whereas the latter also speeds/slows the gnomes.

  • yellow cannon: lighning cannon on the paddle (fires in diagonal lines)

  • lighning: lightning ball (can destroy yellow jewel bricks)

  • red cannon: paddle grows a pair of red cannons that can destroy normal bricks (fires straight lines)

  • hammer: your ball can destroy anything, even jewel bricks (cant remember about rubber ones, though). The ball cuts through the whole wall as a hot knife cuts butter - a real powerful powerup!

  • double dollar sign: points are doubled (until your paddle is destroyed)

There is a mistake in my first post, I think:

The powerup that gives you the fire cannon is a red cannon with a flame on it - the plain red cannon grows a normal cannon to the paddle

Thanks for formatting my former post - didn't knew which tags to use. Now with the preview, I can try beforehand :D

The sparkling power-ups turn gnomes into power-ups automatically - this goes for the ball and the guns.

I am always looking for new games to add to the iMacs in my computer lab for my elementary school students. They have free play time after school homework club. I have tried this game a bit and like it a lot. I was wondering if anyone knows why this one was not tagged as kidsafe? Is it that the gnome tossing bit is a tad violent or is there something I have missed such as bad language?

Reply

No reason for the missing kidsafe tag, Barbara, except for oversight. Fixed. =)

How do I get through level 37. I can't break through the bottom row. I've tried killing all the gnomes but more just keep appearing.

Are there any cheat code out for Jardinains 2? I can't find any and I want to know before I buy the game.

Reply

Here's a link to all the Jardinians 2 powerups: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Jardinains%202!/help/index.html#powerups

The one that looks like a no parking sing will remove any powers you have and will also shrink your paddle to almost nothing.

The little bleeps are laughing at me... *goes to launch some lightning at them*

OK, now I've had a better chance to play...

I love this game. The "thwok" sound the paddle makes when the ball hits it is just so satisfying. And I want a screensaver with nothing but that lightning gun effect.

Also, the creator seems to offer a $10 discount to .edu, .k12.us, and .mil e-mail addresses. That's nice of him.

official cheats ----

If you want to cheat, feel free! Just pause the game, press the [C] key, and click OK. Now you can use the keyboard cheats while the game is running! Some of my favorites: press [G] to keep from losing your ball (and to substantially grow your paddle), press [N] to advance to the next level, press the number [1-7] to change your ball, and press [S] to toggle slow motion! (Bear in mind that enabling cheats will disqualify your current game from the high-score list. It's only fair!)

Question: There are some bricks that seem to be persistently unbreakable, but finally some start to break for no apparent reason. What causes them to break? Is it just a high number of hits, or something else?

Jardinains got me through months of daily radiation therapy, and I've played it ever since. How come no new posts about this great game?

What is your highscore in jardinains 1?
I have about 22.000.000.000 and 53 lives left. This game is too easy.
