The Power of Love

In Denis Vasilev's cute but very grindy action game The Power of Love, a knight and a princess are smitten with one another, but the king isn't having any of it. So what's a lovestruck knight to do? Why, beat down the castle, using the coins the king hurls in distaste to buy new upgrades to further increase your punching prowess. Just click and hold to swing your weapon (initially just the very lute you used to serenade your lady love), and move the cursor to move the knight, walking over coins to pick them up. Move alllllll the way to the left to enter the shop and purchase speed and power improvements. Cute and simple? Sure. Fast? Not so much, as initially the knight moves so painfully slowly you'd be forgiven for getting frustrated before your first speed upgrades. Your goal is to eventually destroy the castle, thus freeing the princess to love as she wishes, though one could argue maybe the princess should get off her frilly butt and do something herself if she were really in love. Still, while it could definitely have been streamlined, once you start unlocking new equipment and thus the king starts hurling more types of treasure, things get a lot faster.

Yeah, this game is super annoying.

It hurts my OCD that you can't collect everything before toppling the tower.

33 days, I think it took me.

I got everything before toppling the tower, it took me 28 days
the high score list is obviously bogus though. There is no way someone did it in 1 day

26 days, didn't get a chance to buy two upgrades. Kind of made me want to repair the castle so I could watch the jackhammer work.

vamoosi April 5, 2015 1:20 PM

it took me 27 days to realize that i could hold the mouse button to beat the castle and that i didn't have to click each individual time. So you know there's that

anyway by that time i'd become more invested in my cute donkey autocollector than in the princess and I was freaking out because I made a horrible mistake and accidentally killed it and i was all ready to have a funeral but then I bought another one and the previous corpse just disappeared so at the very least there is /some/ mercy in this world

this game was super charming and I'm delighted that there's different animations for each speed item and each weapon. But also please update this game so that I can pet the donkey without killing it

I just pulled off 22 days

my strategy

I ignored weapon upgrades at first. Focused mainly on power, and speed, as that determines your income. build up the combo to your max, then let it run at that for a moment before collecting the loot. Picked up the auto collector when it became on-par with my speed upgrade, then stopped upgrading speed. The mule standing there collects msotof what would bounce far away, so you only need to bother collecting the near stuff. I then ignored the mule's speed upgrades, and focused on maxing out my power. Once that was done, I got all of the mule's speed upgrades at once, then just wailed on the tower and let the mule collect it. By that point, resetting your combo stings too much to do lightly.I then powered through to 5000 gold, and got the jackhammer on day 19. It then took 3 days to jackhammer through the rest

This could probably be done better. For one, investing in a stronger weapon earlier could have helped, esp if you jump up ranks and keep the cost to be low compared to your actual upgrades. Jumping up levels in speed may also be beneficial, but I am not sure.

Knight: >singing

King: Hey! What's with all this racket!

Princess: Oh no...

Knight: Don't worry, princess!

King: He must be here to marry her for the wealth! Well, if that's the case, just throw money at him 'till he's satisfied!

Princess: I hate my dad.... I hate my dad...

King: Love you, honey!

Princess: I HATE YOU! >:(

King: Aw, she's such a tsundere...

Knight: >hacking away at tower

Auto Collector Donkey: Uh, are you sure this is a good idea? I mean, she IS in that tower, after all.

Knight: Hush! >smacks Donkey

Donkey: OWWWWW!!! >dies

Knight: Whatever, it's just here to collect money.

Donkey: I hate my job...

>Tower falls over

>King dies

Princess: Finally!

Knight: See? I told you she'd be okay.

Donkey: Whatever...

The knight and the princess ran off to have a life together and the donkey took over the kingdom. With the donkey's amazing wisdom, the kingdom flourished, and became the most powerful kingdom ever.

So, that is the story of how the donkey became king.

21 days

I just bought the donkey as soon as I could and otherwise focused on the food upgrades. It's not worth buying the speed and weapon upgrades other than the early-level and last ones.

You can autohit the castle without even keeping the mouse button pressed. Just hold down the mouse, drag it off-screen, and release. When you un-click, it'll be out of the game's focus so it won't register it.

Be careful though: You kill the donkey if you hit it.

Does anyone know how to get the not-happy ending?

Very cute. Reminds me of On's Grow games.
The balance isn't great though. I really wanted to get that jackhammer, too!

bdr198524 April 6, 2015 11:05 PM

Did it in 25 days and bought everything. I am well trained in clicking fast! (but I really wish I had known I could hold down the mouse button for more than the jackhammer)

21 days, and *barely* managed to buy the jackhammer before the castle fell, on my second try. I was expecting...

something...louder, considering how difficult it was to get - but I can see how might have been jarring, given the game's tone. Instead, 5000 coins bought The World's Most Devastating Q-Tip, based on the quiet tapping it produced. Call it a stylistic choice, I guess.

Strategy notes:

My strategy was to keep my combo up as much as possible. If you walk away from the castle to collect coins, it quickly drops back to 1x, but there is an *extremely* short distance you *can* travel to grab a few coins and go back to smacking the wall before the combo resets. Build it up, wait for a nice cluster of coins/gems to fall close to you, grab them and run back quickly. This distance shifts rightwards as you progress through the wall, so effectively it shortens as the game goes on. Although speed upgrades will help, be warned that higher speed upgrades seem to be slower to "turn around", which makes the run for coins more likely to reset your 25x combo. But by that point, you should have a donkey to grab most of the gems/crowns for you. It's a bit of a tricky balance, judging when there's enough high-value items near you to risk your combo to grab them, but the mechanic does make this a little more exciting than a typical "incrementer" game.
Also, I noticed that the speed/power/donkey buffs are all additive, while the weapon buffs just "set" your strength to the best level you've purchased. Given the time it takes to walk back and forth in the early game, this makes it viable to skip weapon levels. Just take a note of the cost of the weapon two or three ranks above your current weapon when you're at the shop, so you know how much to save up for the next trek back. (The non-weapon (additive) powerups should be purchased in order, though - there's a diminishing buff-per-coin ratio.)

I replayed this game just because of vamoosi's comment.

First game took 40 days; second game, a most auspicious 23 days; finally third game, 18 days.

I suspect I could knock off another 2 days, but will stop now.

Managed to do it in 15 days, after a couple tries. Kinda fun, kinda tedious.

- Prioritize the food items (that up your combo).
- I'd recommend upgrading your speed only 2 or 3 times.
- Get the auto-collector as soon as reasonably possible.
- Even without the speed upgrades, you collect money *much* faster this way.
- If you feel like your upgrades are taking too long, buy a new weapon. New weapon = faster attack speed = more money dropped.

I cannot enter the shop.

You have to click "enter"

Really, why did it have to indicate right click for that. That instruction plus the one in the review just made it confusing. Click enter, that is implied.
