Joshfinalninja_screen1Final Ninja, created by the same Nitrome team (Simon Hunter and Aaron Steed) that brought us Dirk Valentine, is here! This side-scrolling action adventure has plenty of tricks up its sleeve, and the word "ninja" alone will grab many players. In Final Ninja's case, however, I'm happy to say that it's one of the few ninja-based titles that really is fun (and faithfully ninja-like, for that matter).

Best of Casual Gameplay 2008In Final Ninja you play an anime-inspired ninja armed with throwing stars, a grappling rope, and the ability to stealth-hide into the shadows. The stealth mode is a pretty fun tactic, as you'll be met with lots of security systems and enemies that will require a delicate touch to overcome. The grapple is definitely the key mechanic that makes this game shine. Without it, it'd be just another run-and-gun ninja platformer (although still noteworthy).

You're charged with the task of completing each level by reaching a black data access card, all with the intent of facing down your nemesis, Akuma. It's the classic "student tries to rebel against old-and-wise master" story, as you're called into action once again after 10 years of meditation to don the special ninja suit and vanquish your arch rival. You can use the [arrow] or [WASD] keys to run and jump, while the mouse button fires your throwing stars and grapple (aimed by the mouse cursor). Pressing [down] or [S] will let you enter stealth mode, a state in which you'll become virtually transparent except for your cool green, glowing eyes. This state allows most enemies and security lasers to pass you by you undetected. And it wouldn't be a ninja game without wall-jumping, would it? You can push against any wall to latch onto it, slowing your fall until you jump in the opposite direction.

finalninja_screen2The real acrobatics come from using the grapple. Throwing stars can be fired in quick succession by tapping the mouse, but if you click and hold it instead of releasing, you'll fire the grapple that hooks onto most surfaces and lets you swing from ledge to ledge. The grappling system will be most familiar to those who have played the Worms series. Once deployed, you can climb up and down the rope by using the applicable directional key or gain momentum by swinging back and forth. You can even gain enough momentum from a standstill to pull a complete 360 (if you can master the right timing between the up-and-down and side-to-side movement).

Analysis: Nitrome didn't stray off the beaten path when it comes to the look and feel of Final Ninja. The cartoonish pixel graphics are exactly what we're used to seeing and they're just as good as ever. Aside from a seemingly "sticky" wall jumping mechanic, I was a bit hard-pressed to find many faults in Final Ninja. Level progression tempo is tuned perfectly, introducing new elements level by level with signpost tutorial hints along the way. Within each level, no matter where you are, you'll never find yourself far from an arrow indicating which direction you should follow so you don't get lost.

As you get past the fifth level or so, a larger variety of enemies and security systems are introduced, keeping your environments interesting and dynamic. Things get a bit tougher when electric platform edges are introduced, limiting your grappling options. Tto quote the game, "Even a ninja cannot defeat electricity...I respect its ability to bring death to those who are slow".

An interesting, atmospheric and all-around fun grapple-based platformer from Nitrome!

Yea..I am the first (and so special)!!

Wow this game iss amazing with all thesemouse click only games I was thinking nitrome was starting to lose it but this is amazing! Its just toxic with the wall jump. Like Dirk Valentine with the being able to throw chains. And the invisibility its AMAZING. But also I see that Nitrome sees this game is awesome too, because this is the FINAL ninja and they don't want to make another. It probably took alot of work for this one. Awesome Nitrome!

Reply

Yay!!! I am second (I think), and this is a nice break from Mutiny (stupid level 9!!!). The stealth mode is really cool, and the transparent effect is sory of like "fading into the shadows". Also, Nitrome put some main elements from other games, such as the chain cannon from Dirk Valentine and wall jumpin from Toxic. Though the bonuses at the end puzzle me... I think the "Buddha Bonus" means how many enemies you did NOT kill.

All in all, a great game.

I can't beat level 7 (Power Tower 1)! Any hints?

Reply

This game is like every Nitrome game. Fun, addicting, and way too hard. I'm stuck on Lvl 9. Btw, I'm pretty sure I've saw something like this before.

Reply

This is a nice game! Nitrome did some really cool new things with the enemies, including different attacks and the ability to only be harmed in certain stances. I also like how they made the enemies relocate depending on where you are. This is my second favorite game by Nitrome, only beat by Dirk Valentine.

Reply

Did someone say apple store? Where?!?!

:P

Reply

I've gotten a bit bored with nitrome games. My favorite had to be hot air balloon 2. That was mainly due to the open level system. There were secret passages and such. No such thing exists in their newer games. It's level by level system. And I frankly don't like that. But that's my opinion. And I just didn't know where to put this. Thank you all for your time.

Help!
I can't do anything on the front page!

Reply

Great game though I wish Nitrome would finally find a way to display games in fullscreen or have some kind of border preventing you from clicking at one of the links outside of the playing field by mistake...happend to me many times during playing.

Reply

Generally I'm a bit less-than-pleased with Nitrome games, but this one is a very happy exception. It's amazing. The only downside is the ridiculous load times for individual levels.

Ninja: You get the Buddha Bonus for not killing any enemies in a level - a whopping 10,000 points. You presumably get the Retirement Bonus for collecting all the cash.

This is a really good game!

As I found Dirk Valentine a great game, it follows that I find this a great game.
Even the music is similar.

I'm at the final boss :)

This reminds me of Dirk valentine with a good plot, mouse weapon/tool,mid game boss, and lots of fun enemies. It even has the help bubbles. The first nitrome stealth game.

For those finding this one similar in quality to Dirk Valentine, it was made by the same Nitrome team (Simon Hunter and Aaron Steed) that made Dirk.

If people are having any trouble connecting to the site or loading levels it's because we're getting hammered. Please bear with us.

The games are a fixed size due to processor overhead. %70 of the hit in Final Ninja is down purely to rendering graphics. I've scaled up the games before in the IDE and they chug. The quality is even forced to low to get more speed (which people doing vector graphics can't do :P). People can easily get the swf, it just won't do them any good because it is encrypted and will only work from nitrome.com.

If any flash gurus have any experience to offer on running high overhead applications fullscreen, their two cents is welcome.

Glad people like the game, especially seeing as it went over budget.

Reply

I beat the game. It was awesome, but I must say that the bosses and the Samurai have some very bad errors. With both bosses, one can sit overhead and shoot them without being slightly endangered. With the samurai, one can shoot them from behind and they will not even notice it.

Reply

So far, pretty fun- which is an exception for Nitrome games. One small but consistent bug hits me hard, though: if you press and hold a direction (rather than tapping it once) to do a wall-drag, then tap the other direction to jump off, you just start falling away (rather than rising up jump-style); and more importantly, Mr. Ninja remains in the wall-drag sprite position even when he's no longer at a wall.

Reply

Why won't it load? It freezes everything on the loading screen. Any ideas why?

Reply

I'm stuck trying to load the first level. Its been "loading" for ten minutes now. Has anyone else encountered this problem with Firefox?

Reply

I'm on Safari on a Mac, and the begining screen won't even load for me. Nor will the Nitrome or Miniclip logos. What has happened?

Reply

This is fun stuff. Did find one bug:

Hold up while initializing a wallslide. Once sliding, keep holding up and quickly switch from holding toward the direction of the wall to away from it, and you'll continue wallsliding on nothing and float to the ground at an angle. Amusing to watch.

Reply

Actually, aside from the loading bug with firefox, this is an awesome game. My first thoughts were " Wouldn't it be awesome if there was a show about this guy?" I could just see a sequence where he would (as in the game) jump for a platform, miss, grapple-shuriken it, then swing back up on the other side. Reminds me of Aeon Flux.

Reply

I think that it's funny that first Nitrome released a game about pirates, and now ninjas. Guess they wanted to please both crowds.

Reply

For those of you like me who couldn't get it to load, just play the game via miniclip. http://www.miniclip.com/games/final-ninja/en/

Ninja here with a safe spot for level 10!

Woo hoo!

You know at the very top of the level? Swing past the ledge with the piece of cash, then swing up to the opposite ledge with another piece of cash. Jump to the right (do not fall down or you will activate the security laser) and you should be at a long line of cash. Go to the end of the line and jump all the way to the right. You should be able to see Akuna-but he can't shoot at or see you!

Great game! I haven't really been feeling the stuff that's come out of Nitrome recently, but this one is excellent! I'm only on level 7 so far, but the rope swinging and general movement mechanics are wonderful fun.

For those complaining about the small screen size - Firefox 3 has an excellent zoom feature which I use all the time for too-small flash games (and they're all too small considering my native res is 1680*1050). You can use Ctrl-plus or minus to resize (or ctrl-mousewheel up/down, or the View->Zoom menu) to zoom the page until the game fills your window. Combine with F11 (to fullscreen your browser) for best effect. Note: You might experience slowdowns if your CPU can't handle the upsizing.

Reply

I love nitrome! And i love the intro title to this game, so old school!

Reply

Seems I'm the only dissenter here. I'm not a fan of games that require me to use both the key board and the mouse, mostly because I use a graphics tablet and stylus and it just gets way too complicated. Other from that, cute graphics, as always, and good music.

Also, if you look on level 5 above you when you start, you see the Octoboss from Hot Air 2!

Nunya, here is how to beat the cyber samurai:

My technique is to jump over them, and when they freeze momentarily at the end of their jump, you attack them. You have to hit them three times. You can also wait for them to get close and attack so they freeze, but that's more risky.

I found them hard to beat too.

I have always enjoyed Nitrome games, they always deliver high quality. However, some are very similar and many are just good, not great. so I can see why some people get bored with Nitrome. My first thought when I saw this was Dirk Valentine Ninja style.

However, this is an original and excellent game. The grappling mechanism is used in a completely different way. And the difficulty is stepped way up compared to most Nitrome games. Usually I can beat each level with a couple of tries.

Up to the challenge? I am.

i beat the game! there is a safe spot in the last level,

It's by the green electricity before the pit akuma is in. I just kept on aim at a space very close to the edge of the ledge.

Reply

mossman:

My safe spot is underneath the lasers. I take out the guards from below (I trigger them by falling through the rightmost laser), and I just keep jumping straight up, firing in mid-air at Robot Zero, landing back down below, jumping straight up, firing in mid-air... quite tedious, but it works :)

Hope that helps.

I'm stuck in level 11. I read that the cyber samurai needs to thrown when jumped up, but he won't freeze! Neither when it attacks me. Is just my reflexes like crap?

Reply

I have finally beat the game! yay! I have no major tips for level 19, but I have some minor ones, and a samurai strategy. For beating the cyber samurai:

I find the easiest way to beat them is to sneak attack. If you can see them from another level, or even if you know they are there but can't see them, you can shoot at them. Ordinarily, when you shoot at them the block with the sword, but if they haven't seen you yet, it seems like they are in a trance. once they see you though, it is easiest just to dodge and run.

For getting through the part where the guns are exchanging laser glop:

The easiest thing for me was to shoot at the food on the right, then fall through the laser below, then run left, while shooting right. There should be another bowl of food on the left.

For the part where the laser guns are making a grid:

I thought it was easiest just to get shot and fall to the right, where the arrow sighn is. Just blowing through and losing one life was easier than trying to be careful and dying for good.

Hope these help!

Wall sliding bug has been fixed. Please clear your cache and holding up and wallslide will have no more issues. The wall jump can actually be boosted in height by holding up when you do it, so thanks for spotting this. The majority of people seem to be okay playing the game but there may be platform specific issues owing to this being our first AS3 release. If you're still having trouble, try using a different browser or updating the flash player then contact nitrome directly and tell us the browser and computer and exactly what you did to get the bug. If we can't reproduce your bug, we can't fix it.

If there's an easy way to kill an enemy, it is intentional.

Try activating stealth when a samurai is running at you if you're having trouble with them. Whilst you are invisible they will run straight past you.

Thanks for the kind comments, your support makes games like these (and sequels to them) possible.

Anonymous July 28, 2008 6:56 AM

diodavid run toward a samurai and at the last moment jump over him, if done right the samurai starts his jumping attack but misses you. When he hits the ground after executing the jumping attack he pauses and it is then the samurai becomes vunerable for a couple of seconds, you just need to shoot him in the back. It takes a few tries to get right but becomes easy to pull off and the reliable way to kill them.

...oh and for anyone wondering, the other bonus's are :

solid stealth = not triggering alarms and artful dodger = not getting hit by an enemy

There are secret messages expaining them all hidden in the levels.

And for the hi score addicts, there is cash hidden in some way out places on almost every level.SH

Three possible strategies for cyber samurai:

Shoot from a distance. If it doesn't notice you, it can't defend itself.

Jump over them to make them jump attack (don't worry, you can jump higher than them), and shoot them when they hit the ground.

Run Away!!!

if they spot you still keep jumping behind them and attack when they stall.

if you still can't beat them, use your stealth so they run past you (yes, you can't get hurt if an enemy runs past you without attacking) then run.

I stood under the laser on the right side, jumped up, shot the *TOP OF HIS HEAD* midair, and the landed. Do this as many times as you can while the lasers off, so the guards don't keep falling out that thing.

Okay, so, a new Nitrome game is out, but Jay has yet to review it. I love reading reviews!

This is really good, difficult and a nice break to switch between Mutiny (If you say level 9's hard, wait til level 12). The music is great and unfortunately I am stuck on level 9 (It's the samurais! How do you beat them?)

I love this game! It's a rare thing, for me, to finish a game and want more. It looks like an evolution from Dirk Valentine.

There was only one single flaw with the controls: Whenever I made a long jump and shot a star down, the character stopped moving forward and started to fall straight down.

There was another thing a little annoying, the links close to the game window.. more than once i clicked on them and closed my game window!

Still, a great game! I want more levels!

A hint for level 9:

Stealth mode works against the crosshair... it won't eliminate it, but it will cause it to pass over you and keep moving, buying you a few extra moments to keep moving for the sniper. Find the sniper, and kill him, and you eliminate the crosshair. You'll have to do this three times to pass the level.

So much for the cyber samurai not turning around after you leap them. In the current version, they spin and block your stars almost instantly. I haven't landed a single hit yet. And they can hit you in midair too.

Way too $%$%#$#ing hard. I'm about to give up.

"Stealth mode works against the crosshair"
Now you tell me that... I finished the game without knowing that! jumping around like crazy to avoid these things.. lol

This is one of the best games I ever played. Usually, games just put on the internet aren't as great as games you have to download, but this is a really fun and somewhat challenging game.

im like an expert at this game cuz i play it ALOT.....and im an expert at level 7 and 18 :]

I know this game came out a long time ago but it is still fun.

I have a question about the Buddha bonus. So basically you can't kill anything. Even being hit by one of the moving enemies count as killing a unit.

So I've been going through all of the levels and trying to not kill anything to add a level of difficulty, but I cannot beat level 19.
Is there anyone who knows of a way to beat it without killing any enemies?
I can get to the room with the 8 pink lasers and the 4 rows of moving enemies, but no further.

I have been able to draw away some of the enemies and I think that is the way to go about it, but I can't say for sure.

The both bosses can be killed without losing the Buddha Bonus. As for level 19, there is a border just beyond the visible screen where most monsters become frozen to reduce processor overhead. You might be able to use that border to unsychronise monster movement patterns or trap a monster in the freezing zone. All the monsters have environmental A.I., they're not on set paths.

Although I can complete it, I personally don't actually know if it's possible to Buddha level 19.

any one know how to finish level 20

Reply
amaankhalid November 1, 2008 11:36 AM

Yay! I finished final ninja level 20.

Here's how to do it. First try to get below robot zero like this

akuma is here
---------------------------------------------

you are here
---------------------------------------------

Now jump from the right corner because when you hit the alarm, the cyber bot comes from the left corner and there's a gap in the middle where you can find food. But first kill the flying mines.

Hope this was helpful and descriptive. Good luck. Hope all of you final ninja fans kill Akuma.

Tips for level 18

You just run onto the edge and jump, then you land on a platform, then you will be able to get it.

Good luck.

I'm stuck on level 19. Man it's hard.

Uh,something really weird just happened.

I was on level four, and I died for the first time. But rather than asking me to try the level again it showed the ending sequence!

I have seen it before (finished the game on another computer).

Anyone have any ideas how it happened??

Reply

Jasper, I was playing level 19 and the same thing happened to me. It's the second glitch I found. The other one was when I was on level 3, swung towards a wall, and went through the wall.

Cor. I've managed to complete 2 games in one hour. This one, and Pixel Pop. (Well the last 2 levels of each. I had completed the other ones)

I've just beat this game! Level 17 was quite a challenge while level 19 required a few lucky tries at the end. Level 20 was really easy!

Level 12 is AWESOME and so easy!!! I thought it would be hard after 11 took me an hour (with the cyber samurais and all), but it was just a lot of jumping and avoiding electrical currents and those bombs of electricity that rove about. Highly recommend Final Ninja, one of Nitrome's best. Had trouble figuring out Final Ninja Zero, though.
