thefogfall2.gifJohnBNew from Pastel Games and Mateusz Skutnik, creator of Covert Front, the Submachine series, and The Great Escape series, comes a sequel to last year's desolate adventure, The Fog Fall. After escaping the shelter in the previous game, The Fog Fall 2 begins right where you left off, standing victorious on the grassy ground above. Apocalyptic war zones are never a place to hang around and celebrate, however, and so your quest continues with a broken-down truck, a few well-dressed soldiers, and some mutants hiding in the fields.

Item and inventory puzzles are the name of the game in The Fog Fall 2, so prepare to click every corner and examine every object you see. Items you collect are stored at the bottom of the screen, and to use them simply click on an item followed by the area you wish to use it on. It's also a good idea to think of logical uses for objects you gather, then aim your cursor at spots you think they could be used, just in case you can take a closer look at things...

As you investigate the town you'll find a number of items useful to your quest. A townsfolk or two provide a helping hand, though if you ask me, they'd be a lot more helpful if they'd just give up their items without asking me to rummage through every house on the block. But that's not much of a game, is it?

Analysis: The artwork in all of Pastel Games' titles has this smooth, graphic novel feel to it, and the look fits perfectly into the world of browser gaming. The Fog Fall 2, much like Covert Front and Submachine, conveys a desolate world using pastel colors, dull tones, and sparse but chilling ambient sound effects. It's the sort of bleakness that's palpable, but not overwhelming, which pulls you into the game world without burying you in it. In other words, the exact level of investment you want in a casual browser game.

The Fog Fall 2 seemed a bit easier than its predecessor, and you can probably charge through in half an hour or so, depending on your adventuring skills. It was interesting to be able to roam freely in the shelter where the first Fog Fall game took place. Not only did this heighten the story's sense of progression, it also gave you a little ego boost right from the start. "Remember this place? Yeah, you broke out of there! Good job!"

The Fog Fall 2 is a great game to get tangled up with for half an hour. Let's hope we don't have to wait another year for the next installment!

Walkthrough Guide

Here's my somewhat narrative walkthrough:

Aaaaah, fresh air, it feels so good after so much time in this shelter. Now what to do? Mmmh, let's have a look around. This old car ahead may contain something useful.

Oh, a crowbar, on the driver's seat. That may be of use indeed. Let's go to the road beyond the car.

Three buildings: two houses, and the one on the right looks like a garage, let's start with this one. The crowbar makes the lock easy to put away.

Nice truck! Let's see what's inside. Well... nothing, it seems. The glovebox won't open, even using the crowbar. Sturdy. OK, let's get out and see what's under the hood. Mmmmh, something seems to be missing, but what?

Ah, well, let's get outta her. Before leaving, maybe there's something useful on the shelves to the left. Now that's a big hammer! I take it, you never know when you'll need to break something.

Back to the road, let's go to the house to the right.
Whoah! Better not make this guy angry!
Actually, he seems kind enough. He'll exchange the truck's keys for something valuable. I'll see to that.

On the road again (heh), let's see that house on the left. Mmmh, it seems empty. What's in. Oh! This poor guy seemed prepared, but apparently not quite enough. He doesn't need his bullet belt anymore, does he? I may, so I take it.

Back to the road, let's go further. Mmmmh, a gas station. If I can get the truck, I'll sure need gas. But the guy only accepts food as a payment. I'll see what I can do about it.

The road goes far away, I'll really need the truck to leave the area. Back to the shelter to see what I can find.

I return into the shelter, and deeper into it, to the stairs. Let's forget the stairs, they make me claustophobic. I prefer to see what there is to the right. Hey, there seems to be something potentially useful in the right part of the cupboard. A fuel can! It's empty, though.

Back to the stairs, and now to the left. Mmmh, nothing of use in the left and right rooms, but that wall... it makes my hammer itch. One, two, three hit and it's done. What is beyond? There's a hatch that won't open, and a room ahead. Let's see.

Aw! Spooky! What happened to this dude? His diary on the table tells me more about it. Poor chap, did a lethal mistake, it seems. Did I know him, by the way? Can't remember. Maybe there's something of use in this room, on the shelves to the right, for example. Yessss! Spaghetti! Food to trade, indeed.

Now to leave this damn shelter and back to fresh air. What to do? There's a path along the house. Here I go.
But let's have a look through the window, first. Mmmh, nothing here, but the door may lead somewhere interesting.

Well, well, isn't that a well? Oh my! Seclusion did awful on my sense of humor! Anyway, there's something inside the well. What is that strange box? No idea. Nothing else to take.

Back to the path, and onward to the woods. Nice little walk, very pleasant. Great for my mood. Nice hunting tower, too. And beyond... GAH! What are those things? They seem to be impressed by neither crowbar nor hammer! Quick, back to the tower to think of the situation!

Up inside the tower. Hey, a rifle. With a scope at that. Time to put those bullets at use. Let's load the magazine, use the scope and... One monster, two monsters, three monsters, fou... ah, no, click. Oh, right, the magazine only holds three bullets. Once reloaded, I continue, four monsters, five monsters out of the way. Let's go back to where they stood.

A lady as gracious as grateful thanks me for freeing her and her family from the monsters who besieged them for a week. As a reward she gives me a necklace of wolf's fangs, stating it's very precious around here.

Back to town, and to the heavily armed man. Yup, seems like the necklace will work for him to trade for the truck's keys. One problem solved.

Now to the gas station. Apparently the guy likes spaghetti, and trades them for one gallon of gasoline. I hand him my fuel can.

Finally, back to the garage, to put the gas in the truck's tank, and here we go, let's start the... uh oh, why doesn't it start? Oh, yeah, something was missing under the hood. I'll go look at that.

Mmmmh, seriously, what could I add in there? This strange box I found in the well? Yay, that's it! It's a battery! Back aboard the truck (not forgetting to shut the hood), key on contact, and here I go, I can leave the town!

Beat it without any help, which is rare for Murtaugh's games. I'll write a walkthrough later; I'm in class right now.

Cool game. You must know, that Mateusz Skutnik is from Poland, where people afraid nuclear stuff and radiation so much, that they don't have any nuclear plants (only country in Europe). They prefer to have expensive electricity from toxic coal plants.

Good game. I only needed to look at the walkthrough in the game to find out where

to get the gas, and what that gray box was. It turns out the gray box was a

I thought it was weird that none of the items you pick up were labeled when you hovered over them in your inventory. If it weren't for that, I'm sure I could've beaten this without a walkthrough.

A gas station. But where is it?

Go further into town (click right above the end of the road), and you'll see a gas station on the right.

Awesome game! The best part of the game was

blowing away the zombies!

Well, that and the girl. She was kinda hot for a cartoon character. LOL!

I found getting around to be a lot harder then some of the other games he's made. Such as :

looking around in the basement and finding the

tool cabinet next to the truck,

and the

gas station down the road,

both of which I found completely by accident.

However, that said, I really liked this game and look forward to fog fall 3 (and for that matter Covert Front 3).

Also,

I'm really curious about the dead guy

that we find behind the brick wall

and why we don't know who it is when we find them.

I found one loose end, wondering if anyone else figured out something to do with it:

In the basement, after you break through the brick wall but before you go into the bunker, there's a ladder to the upper left. You can click it to see an overhead hatch, and you can click the handle of the hatch, but I couldn't figure out how to open it.

Maybe it's just a red herring...

Oh my!
Rereading my walkthrough some time after having posted it, I realise, now, how much it reveals that English is not my primary language.
I had proofread it for spelling and grammar (and now I find in it some errors that escaped that proofreading), and a little for style too, but rereading it now... Gosh, I think I could, and should, have done better in terms of style!

I thought my style was a little clumsy at first, but felt like it grew better while I was writing the stuff (was it, by the way? Were the later parts better written than the earlier? I'd like to know).

But now that I reread it, I find it clumsy all along. Maybe a little less and less clumsy (I tried to avoid overusing "let's" after a while, for example), but still clumsy overall.

Ah, well, it's not like I should have made some impressive work of literature in English, considering my linguistic origins (I'm French).

But I'm set on the idea that I should have done better. And on the idea that, maybe, I could.

[Edit: Feel free to rewrite it and post it again. We'll replace what you had up there previously with the revision. :) -Jay]

Wow! Once again completely blown away by Pastel! The games are logical, interesting, beautifully animated, quirky, and with non-annoying music. The perfect mix. The only complicated part of this one was finding the food. Thank you Dan Someone.

Reply

Oh no:

Zombies! ZOMBIES! They scare the pants off of me. It was a rather impressive "shock" moment when I first sited them in the rifle scope...sent a shiver up my spine.

I was also intrigued/impressed by:

The dead guy on the other side of the brick wall. Not only did the game designer scratch an itch I've had since I played the first game, "what's on the other side of that wall?" but he managed to raise a couple of other questions. Why did the people in the shelter brick off that section? Who was the dead guy? Very intriguing.

The designer is building quite an interesting game world. I am looking forward to the next installment. Who knows, maybe he'll find a way to link it to the story of covert front? Maybe the war didn't go so well?

Reply

Absolutely brilliant. None of the random "combine a whisk with two nails and some elastic" that annoys me in the Great Escape games, a really good but not overly-complicated story, and some decent puzzles.

The atmosphere was spot on, and I actually found moving around to be quite logical (well, except maybe while in the bunker).

Next instalment please!

The dead guy left a diary on his table that'll answer some of your questions.

Congratulations to the Pastel Games team; this is great stuff, and they need to start displaying their individual names more prominently so people stop giving all the credit to Mateusz. For example, the story in this game was done by Karol Konwerski, the art by Maciej Palka, and the music by Brian Wohlgemuth. Mateusz programmed.

Yep, somebody already said this but you can't get the key to go in the ignition until you've (1) put the battery in the truck, and (2) put gas in the truck, and possibly (3) closed the hood of the truck after having installed the battery. Once you've done all those things, it isn't very pixel-sensitive to get the key to go in.

That is the title of a famous futuristic Ray Bradbury book where in the end, the city gets Nuked by enemy bombers. That isn't the main point of the story - the good guy gets out right before the a-bombs get dropped - it's basically the background, but that is how the book ends.
Check it out.

I honestly think Pastel Games and MS are slipping. Not much content in this puzzle wise, though it is another stunning looking game. But then Submachine and Covert Front were both stunning and there were puzzles coming out of my computers vents.
We all know MS is capable of producing soooooo much more from a game. It doesn't even have anything in the way of a storyline. It felt like more of a bridge between episodes (assuming there will be a third installment)than a meaty part of an adventure. One major plus is the logic. No using toothpaste and a toxin to open a locked cabinet??? (still don't get that).
Also I liked the ambient sound. It was very indicative of the situation.
I'm giving it 3 mushrooms, though If I could I would be giving it more of a 2.5. I'm rounding up because of who made the game, if it was any other team I'd have probably rounded down.

You did close the hood, didn't you? you can't put the key in unless you close the Hood. Try that.

I love this!! Storytelling! Can't wait to see what's next. I wish this section had been longer, and I found it difficult sometimes to find all the exits from each scene (took me a while to find

the path leading to the rifle tower, for instance... I thought the only way you could leave that scene was towards the car and back down to the shelter).

By way of a suggestion on how to fix this, especially if there is going to be a change in perspective when switching scenes, a simple map indicating the directional relationship between scenes would help. Either that or just little indicators at the edges of the screen when there is an exit.

Good, good game. Made me feel so uneasy. Amazing how drawings can do that.

The walkthrough doesn't work for me.

I started a new game and went through the walkthrough, and got stuck in the same place - at the gun. I click on my ammo, use it on the gun(I see an animation of 3 going inside), return the ammo to my inventory, click on the scope, but then I just click whenever I try to shoot anything. I've tried headshots, body shots, and shooting every one of them, but nothing works. Any idea why my gun is broken?

@sian
You aren't crazy. He is in the left house. You click on it then click the doorway and presto. Hope this helps.

Zombies!!
AHH!!
They freak me out so much, I screamed and fell off my chair when I walked straight into the field where they were!!!!
Ahh well, awesome game I totally fell in love with this sort of style. Bring on more zombies and more scariness!!!

Is there a Fog Fall 3? Hopefully... I couldn't live without The Fog Fall!! Lovin' the apocalypse so far ;)

Hey Joe, when you start 3rd grade next year, perhaps you should know that coal is used to filter water and leaked nuclear storage can (permanently) poison and destroy LARGE amounts (and sources) of water (which it always leaks, because there's no material available to contain it).

Okay, now we have some real color in Part 2 of the series, and once again, first rate writing and story telling. The graphics are still kinda lame and very limited, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story part of it. I'm hoping the series will continue. I give the creators of this series a big "Thumba Up" and four, bright, shiny, Gold Stars. I'd give it the full Five Stars if the graphics were better.
