When the pure light that sustains the alchemists starts to dwindle it's what's referred to in the industry as "A Major Problem", and it's up to you to restore civilization in this gorgeous and brief metroidvania platformer.
Within this puzzle platform game is a simple concept that layers on the challenges to your agility and spatial reasoning as you delve deeper within thoughts of doubt and regret. Using [WAD] or arrow keys to move, and [E] to interact with elements, you must manipulate gravity, deactivate laser beams and follow off stage routes until you reach the red door. If the payoff you're looking for is a clean design to please your eyes and something to entertain your agility and brain power, plunge into Within, let go of cynicism, and enjoy.
Full of questions about who he is and how he came to be, the little who knows a few things already: the world is dangerous, so move blocks to mitigate that danger and use the [arrow] keys to move around it. The world is also lonely, until the moment he meets "her" and, together, they make their way toward the light, seeking answers in this atmospheric puzzle platform game with as much emphasis on story as on the puzzles it contains.
You are a private eye investigating a rival P.I. when you are conked over the head from behind with a blunt object. Now you're trapped inside his office and must use your wits and detective skills to escape the room. Smooth navigation, a sleuthy ambiance and light parody of the genre make this a good, quick dose of noir whenever the mood grabs you.
If you want to join the club, then the titular hat is requisite. It's just that simple. But getting to this millinery accoutrement is not as straight-forward in this platform puzzler by David Durham. Use [WASD] or arrow keys to move about, pick up items, and enter doorways and the [space bar] to jump as you pass by obstacles such as disintegrating tiles and rolling barrels—all while keeping that hat on your head. The difficulty of this feat varies by your agility and timing, yet the production values are consistently excellent. So hold on to your hat and get ready for the fun!
This modern take on the classic by Hans Christian Anderson (forget about Disney!) was created in 58 hours for TOJam #7. Point and click your way around a minimalistic environment of office space and city streets, holding very one-sided conversations with those you encounter. While it has some rough edges in terms of navigation, it does a good job of eliciting sympathy and will especially strike a chord with those struggling with shyness.
Goime 500, a platformer by Cary Huang, might look a heck of a lot like Achievement Unlocked. And, with its 500 achievements to earn for every tiny little action, it plays a lot like it too. Comparisons are, of course, inevitable, but its webtoy feel and whimsical humor certainly helps make up for its lack of premise-innovation.
Bripitol, a sort of deliberately-paced matching game, continues Tonypa's run of designs for games that are simple, easy to grasp, yet unique and compelling. With appealing abstract design and soundtrack from Kevin Macleod, Bripitol is a fine edition to Tonypa's library of puzzlers.
Make ready thine lance, young knight! And then make ready to hand it off to thine children, because thou art about to get thine hind end kicked. When an expedition goes wrong, stranding a young boy deep inside a series of caverns lit only by strange crystals, he thinks he's alone in the dark. He's wrong. This retro pixel adventure mixes light puzzling with a creepy narrative and atmosphere that combines for a slow-moving but unique experience that's definitely worth a look.
